Chapter Thirty-Four: The Wedding (Part Two)

You watched Hoshi retreat from the balcony, and disappeared into the building. The sun finally disappeared from the sky, and the stars began to twinkle against the dark sky. Little lights on string flickered on, lighting up your arms with pale gold light. You stared at the lights wrapped around the railing, absorbed in your thoughts. Hoshi was your sister. Michiko was your mother.

Nothing will ever be the same again, you thought. No more bot-fighting to support my life, no more living alone and being bullied, ironically, by my own sister. You sighed, realizing the last bot fight was the one you lost to Hiro. So long ago.

Hiro! You snapped to attention. Didn't Hoshi say something like Hiro going to her for relationship advice?

Was it about me? you thought.

The door opened again, and you turned around. It was Hiro. He was wearing a white collared shirt, black pants, and a red tie.

"Hiro, if you wanted to come to this wedding, you could have at least wore the whole outfit," you joked.

"I didn't want to wear the jacket," Hiro complained. "It's almost fall, but it's still pretty hot." He came over to the railing, right where Hoshi was standing a few minutes ago. "Hoshi told me you were out here."

You nodded, staring at the starry sky.

"So. . . what's up?" Hiro finally asked.

"Nice conversation starter," you said, grinning as you stared at the dark golf course.

"Um. . . you look nice," Hiro said.

"Try again."

"I'm not kidding," Hiro replied. You glanced at him out of the corner of your eye, and he was fumbling with the lights draped over the railing. He was blushing.

"Um. . . thanks, I guess," you said quietly.

"Hey, you're wearing the necklace I fixed," Hiro said suddenly. Then he stopped and widened his eyes.

You looked at him. "I thought Tadashi fixed it." You turned to face him, raising your eyebrow in confusion.

Hiro sighed. "You really want to know who fixed your bike? Gave you pastries after I took your money in the bot fight? Gave you the keychains?" He refused to look at you.

"It was you," you whispered.

Hiro turned to you, a small smile on his face. "Can I try this again?"

"Try wha-" you were cut off when Hiro stepped forward and pressed his lips against yours. You were surprised. Well, this is one eventful evening, you thought, but you gave in.

Hiro pulled away. "Now, let's dance."

"I can't dance."

Hiro turned to you. "(Y/N), there's nothing you 'can't' do. If you succeeded in taking my heart, then you can pretty much do anything."

"Catch me if you can!" Hiro screamed, tearing across the golf course. There was no source of light, only the moon and the country club, which looked like a tiny box in the distance. It was perched on a hill and pounding music.

You stepped across the soft grass. "My feet hurt enough from dancing," you complained.

"You're just saying that 'cause you're scared of the dark," Hiro replied wickedly, slipping into the shadows of the trees.

You grinned, then pulled off your shoes. You dropped them in the grass, then took after Hiro. Hiro tugged off his shoes, too, and threw them so they landed beside yours. Then he darted away. You ran after him, laughing.

You didn't bother to retrieve the two pairs of shoes sitting there in the grass.
