Letter V

All shadows of clouds the sun cannot hide

like the moon cannot stop oceanic tide;

but a hidden star can still be smiling

at night's black spell on darkness, beguiling ~ Munia Khan

Dear Dylan,

I refuse to believe that light can simply hide in the shadows letting the darkness rule. A person can't be one hundred percent evil or hurtful. Every person who hurts another has been hurt too; as much as this is not an excuse for their behavior, we cannot also deny the existence of light in them.

You, my dear Dylan, were the epitome of light, goodness, and love. You overcame hardships with a strong will and a sweet smile. You rushed to help people in need even when they were too shy to ask for it. You were drawn to fixing broken things, amending severed relationships, and righting all wrongs.

But now, you are a mere shell of who you were.

I can see a darkness in your eyes that I have never seen before, a sad glint in those beautiful green orbs, a sad melancholic harmony in your movements... an angel who has fallen from grace.

But I also notice the light that you've been trying to bury deep down; I see it peeking out through the broken shreds of your soul.

I see you rushing to help someone who has just tripped, then stop in your tracks, slump your shoulders forward as you were beaten down from the inside. I watch you laugh at some stupid joke with the one friend you still bother to hang out with, then frown guiltily as if scared of being happy, as if you didn't deserve a simple moment of genuine peace.

You will read this letter one day, so keep in mind what I'm about to tell you. You deserve every chance at happiness, peace, and success. Don't let anyone or anything steal your light, because when you embrace it, you shine brighter than anyone I have ever known.

And you, Dylan, were my light in life's dark abyss,

Yours sincerely,

Cheryl
