FORTY THREE.

There were only a handful of people who Katherine Pierce feared and it just so happened that the one high up on her list was currently holding her up by her throat.

"Jasmine, long time no see. How have you been?" Katherine gasped out like she actually cared.

"Unfortunately, I've been having a rough few months." Katherine fake pouted as she continued to struggle against her hold, "but I'm sure now that you're here, you can be useful."

"Oh yeah? How's that?"

"I've been itching to get some blood on my hands, so your shriveled and cold little heart will do."

Katherine let out a gasp as Jasmine impaled her chest and clasped her fingers around her heart, "wait, wait, wait!"

Sighing, Jasmine loosened her fingers but kept her hold on her heart, "what are you doing here, Katerina?"

"I'm looking for something."

If there was one thing Katherine was good at it was being vague—a trait Jasmine was finding rather annoying at the moment, "can you be more specific?"

Katherine smirked which caused Jasmine to clench her heart tighter. The younger vampire kicked her feet against the wall in pain, "considering that this information is the only thing keeping me alive at the moment then no."

It was obvious Katherine didn't understand the situation she was in, "whatever you're looking for isn't keeping you alive, sweetheart. It's my pure curiosity and I seem to be growing bored."

"Okay!" Jasmine let her hold slacken but now held Katherine by the throat, not wanting her to get away so easily.  "I see you're a little more murdery than usual. I'm looking for the moonstone." Now casual and relaxed—she knew Jasmine wasn't going to release her until she gave her what she wanted, but at least the older vampire had her hold on her neck instead of her heart—Katherine let out a chuckle while raising her hands up in mock defense when Jasmine rolled her eyes in annoyance.

"Why would it be here?"

"Because the last person who had it, his descendants happen to still be living here."

A vague memory of a rumor going around in 1864 surfaced to her mind: the Lockwoods owned the moonstone. Why she didn't put two and two together before, she didn't know, but she justified it with her not being interested in it since Klaus still didn't know that the curse could now be broken. But that now changed since Katherine was here for that exact reason.

"Hmm, so that's why your boy toy is still walking around. He's a Lockwood."

Katherine tilted her head to the side and mockingly said, "clever girl."

Jasmine took a step back and before Katherine could even think about escaping, the heretic balled up her fist and silently chanted a rope binding spell. Katherine fell to the floor as she felt invisible threads of rope tightening around her whole body, "if you knew where it was then why go for it now?" Jasmine knew the answer: Klaus was close to figuring it out and it wouldn't be too long until he came rampaging into the town.

"When I turned I had the slight relief that our friend wouldn't be able to break his curse. I mean I was on the run because I supposedly wronged him, but even if he caught me he wouldn't be able to get what he truly wanted." Katherine had stopped struggling and just laid on the ground, a far away look in her eyes.

"But now that you know Elena exists... you want to get to her before he does."

Jasmine simply looked at Katherine and saw the scared girl who had found out Klaus was going to sacrifice her all those years ago. She always believed people could change and maybe Katherine had gone back to who she was since the last time she saw her, but she couldn't just write off the fact that Katherine had hurt the two people she loved with all of her heart.

"I know you don't like me—"

"Loathe is more accurate—"

"But Elena Gilbert deserves to live her life like I wasn't able to." Katherine refused to look Jasmine in the eyes, it was something she always wasn't able to do. She had looked up to the older vampire and then ended up fearing her the moment she took her own life.

Jasmine cleared her throat, getting a little uncomfortable by her sentimental talk, "what do you plan to do—"

"I know someone who can get rid of the moonstone for good. If I can get to it then I can make it happen. After that, I need to convince the Salvatores that it's too dangerous for Elena to stay in MysticFalls."

"Do you really think they're going to believe you? This 'new' you?" Jasmine scoffed and turned her back on her, "they won't believe that you're on their side, not after what you did to them."

"I know that! That's why I'm doing this! Getting under their skin, killing a close friend of theirs—if they believe that I will do anything to get to them... to kill Elena, then what's stopping them from taking matters into their own hands and getting Elena to safety?"

It was a brilliant plan, really—if it worked—but all this talk was giving Jasmine a headache, she was overwhelmed with too many thoughts at the same time that her breathing began to get erratic once more and the ringing returned.

Who was keeping her here? Who had a vendetta? Would the Salvatores believe Katherine's plan? Why had Katherine's personality suddenly changed? Why did her friends abandon her when she needed them the most? There has to be a reason why the prophecy must come true. Is there a way to deflect it? How could she let it ride out if it hurt the ones she loved the most?

Katherine watched as Jasmine paced in front of her. The vampire had begun whispering to herself the same thing over and over again: why me? Katherine wasn't sure what was happening especially when Jasmine began to slouch over and tug at her hair, but she knew nothing good was going to come out of it if Katherine spoke up. But of course, curiosity got the best of her.

"Are you okay?"

Jasmine turned to look at her with such speed that Katherine was surprised her neck didn't crack. She didn't wonder that for very long as she saw Jasmine's face transform and a snarl left her lips. With her eyes widening, Katherine began to struggle against the rope binds, though there was no point until Jasmine would lift the spell.

Jasmine's head was swirling with thoughts of killing Katherine. And her mind wanted her to revel in the feeling of the younger vampire's blood running down her chin. Every nerve in her body was encouraging her to act on her instincts, to feed the adrenaline running through her veins. She took a step forward causing Katherine to try to squirm away but only to gasp out when suddenly, the pressure of the ropes released.

"Get out of here!" Jasmine snarled before stumbling into the hospital, ready to tear into an innocent person's throat.
