"I had a lot of fun but..."
Stevie couldn't take it anymore. Two weeks had passed and she still felt awful! She was tired, sick, she would have dizzy spells and the headaches- they took the cake! One morning, after having spent the night in Lindsey's arms, she tip toed into the bathroom. She pulled a pregnancy test out from under the sink and took it, only for her daughter to bang on the door requesting her attention.
"Coming, gummy bear!" she called out, leaving it to sit on the bathroom sink. It took twenty minutes anyway, she had plenty of time to get Arabella sorted. She rushed out of the bathroom to see her daughter beaming, staring up at her as if she were an angel.
"Pretty mommy!" she squealed, clapping her hands.
"Thank you, precious" Stevie picked up the little girl and kissed her cheek. "Do you know where daddy is?"
She shook her head and Stevie looked thoughtful a moment. He was just in bed a minute ago. How long was she in there?
"Steph!" She heard her name and knew it was just who she was looking for. She walked into the living room and sat her daughter down with a toy so she could get to work on making her oatmeal.
"Good morning, Linds." Stevie kissed his lips softly and he smiled.
"Good morning, baby"
"So why did you call my name?"
"I saw your note by the answering machine"
"What note?" Stevie asked, getting a pot and the oats out of the cupboards.
"You have a brunch date with Alan today."
"I what?" Stevie stopped, looking up at Lindsey.
"Get dressed and I'll take over here."
"Are you sure?" Stevie looked grateful for the help. Lindsey nodded. "Thank you!" Stevie went back to her room to find an outfit. She changed quickly then went to the bathroom to do her makeup, only to remember the test she had yet to look at. She read the instructions again, then looked at her result. "Fuck" Part of her was extremely happy, but there was also a part of her that was a little sad. She continued on with her makeup, trying to decide if she felt up to going on this date she didn't even remember agreeing to. She looked back at the test then the mirror, and sighed. "I can't do this." She put her makeup away and as she caught a glimpse of herself in the full length mirror, the tears fell. This wasn't the way it was meant to go. She wasn't supposed to be dating anyone while she was married to her one true love. They were supposed to be happy and have babies and work on their music as a unit and the longer this experiment lasted, she could feel Lindsey pulling away emotionally. He was loving and wonderful but there was something missing, as if he were saving himself from heartache if she left. She touched her stomach beneath the silky fabric of her blouse and knew what she had to do. She had to end things with Alan. She found Lindsey, serving breakfast to Arabella. The oatmeal was cool enough for her to eat on her own and she did so happily.
"I put a few chocolate chips in there, don't tell mommy" he told the little girl and she nodded, giggling.
"I heard whispering." Stevie said and Lindsey gave her an adorably guilty face. "Can I talk to you a second?" Lindsey glanced at Arabella who was still eating, and he nodded. "I don't want to go on that date. I don't want to go to therapy, I just want this to be over." Stevie smiled, reaching out to touch her husband's face when he suddenly smacked her hand away. She was visibly hurt.
"Why now, Stevie? You knew I didn't like the idea, you knew I didn't want to go to Dr Bozo--"
"Banzo"
"Whatever. You seemed to love parading around here, looking like you've just been kissed by some other guy. You let him grope you, and sit close to you...he's been dating you for almost five months and you don't give a shit!" He raised his voice and Arabella started to cry. "Why don't you just fuck him, marry him?!"
"Please don't yell" she begged, trying to soothe their daughter enough so she could eat.
"I just want to know why the change of heart? You never cared before, why now?"
"Because..."
"Why are you suddenly done with this sick little game?"
Her lip quivered and she couldn't stop it. "Because, Lindsey. I'm p-pregnant..." Stevie said. Hot tears rolled down her cheeks and Lindsey was stunned.
"Oh my god..."
"I need to call him and cancel, I can't do this."
"No, your note said 11:30, he's probably already--" The intercom sounded and she sighed.
"Here" She took a few deep breaths, pulling herself together enough to buzz him up. She checked her appearance in the mirror, making sure she hadn't destroyed her makeup. "What am I going to do? I can't very well say 'Alan, thank you for going out with me, you're a wonderful guy. I had a lot of fun but it's over because I'm pregnant by my husband'."
Lindsey laughed. "Why can't you?"
She thought a moment. "I...I don't know, I just can't."
"So are you going on the date then?"
"No, but--" In minutes, Alan was there. She opened the door and he greeted her with a kiss. In his arm he has a box of chocolates and a large bouquet of flowers.
"Wow, Stevie, you look gorgeous. You're glowing!" Alan told her, taking another minute to look her over.
"Thank you, there's a reason for that."
"Are you ready to go?" Alan asked. "Oh, hey Linds!"
"Hey" Lindsey gave him a nod, going over to clean up Arabella's breakfast mess. He stared at Stevie, hoping she would say something.
"Um, Alan, maybe we should sit down. We need to talk about something."
"What about? The party? I'm really sorry about that. I had a little too much to drink and I was feeling bold...it won't happen again. I know this is an experiment and you're not really my girl...are we okay?"
"Well..." Stevie bit her lip, staring down into her lap. "Something happened and I wasn't expecting it."
"Oh, well that's okay. We can reschedule."
"No, I, I won't be going on any more dates with you. I'm ending the experiment."
"Oh" Alan looked a little upset. "Did I do something?"
"No, you're a great guy Alan. Any girl would be lucky to have you but, you see, I'm pregnant." Alan placed the flowers on the table with the chocolates and stood. "I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize. I'm happy for you both."
"Thank you" Stevie began to cry all over again. She saw how hurt he was. He really liked her and she knew it. She knew it was unfair for him to be the guy she dated and if she were honest, she kind of fell for him too but it wasn't love.
He knelt down before her, stroking her cheek. "You shouldn't be crying, Stevie, you should be celebrating. You're having a baby, that's amazing! Aren't you happy?" Stevie nodded. "You're a good mother, you have an beautiful daughter, and your husband....well, he's alright." Alan said and Stevie giggled a little. "I will be just fine. You focus on taking care of yourself."
"Thank you, Alan." She wrapped her arms around his neck in an embrace. He rubbed her back. "I'm sorry"
"What did I tell you? It's alright. Keep the flowers, and the chocolates...I'm sure you've got a craving hidden in there somewhere." he joked.
"Can we still be friends?" she asked, pulling back from the hug.
"Of course we can, honey. Are you okay?" She nodded. "Alright. I gotta jet but thank you for being honest with me. It means a lot."
Alan let himself out and Lindsey watched Stevie crying on the sofa. He didn't know how to feel. She was crying over breaking up with some guy she shouldn't have been dating anyway. He knew she needed comfort so he put aside his pride and anger. He put their baby down for a nap and sat beside her. "Are you okay?" he asked.
"Yeah, I'm sorry, I know it's stupid and I'm being insensitive to you."
"No, you hate to let people down and hurt people's feelings. Plus, I'm sure your hormones aren't helping." He nudged her and she smiled.
"No, I guess they aren't. Thank you for being so nice to me."
"You're welcome. I love you."
"I love you too."
He kissed her, stroking her hair. "Maybe later all three, well, four of us can go out to lunch. How does that sound?"
"Perfect"
"Then when we put Arabella down for the evening, maybe we can celebrate?" He gave her a mischievous smile and she nodded eagerly.
"I'd like that."
