Learning To Fly
"Come on, Willow," Poppy insisted. "It can't be that bad!"
"Trust me, you don't wanna see it," she warned, a blanket wrapped around her body.
"Willow, whatever it is, weirder things have happened," Branch tried to reassure her. The rest of the Snack Pack agreed.
"Fine," Willow sighed, and let the blanket fall to the ground. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary... until a giant pair of grey, feathery wings spread open!
"What the...?!" Branch exclaimed. "How did...?! When did...?!"
"Last night," she replied as her wings twitched. "I was sleeping soundly, and at 2:00 in the morning..."
Flashback
Willow woke up to a sharp pain in her back. Almost as if her spine was being ripped out. Then, somehow, it reached both her shoulder blades. Willow reached underneath her nightshirt to rub on it, but what she didn't expect was to find a grey feather in her hand. As the pain got worse, she heard the sound of fabric ripping. Willow turned her head to find a pair of wings sprouting from her back!
"What's HAPPENING?!"
End flashback
"Cool!" Poppy said. "Willow, you have wings! Now, you can fly with your bird friends!"
"Well, I haven't figured out flying yet," Willow said. "I can't even control moving them!"
"Well, you could try... I don't know... believing?" Branch nervously suggested.
"Yeah, that's a great idea!" Poppy agreed. "You just gotta believe you can fly!"
"I thought you're always telling us don't listen to Branch," Willow pointed out.
"Only when he says something boring or scary."
"It couldn't hurt to try," Biggie insisted.
"Okay," she said, and tried to spread her wings. "Come on, Willow. Believe, believe, believe..."
Willow began flapping her wings at a steady pace. Then, she was off the ground! Before she could say "Woo-hoo," however, her wings flapped too hard and too rapidly.
"This was a terrible idea!" she screamed. Suddenly, her wings retracted back into her body, and she fell from the sky. Willow would've been done for if she didn't grab a tree branch with her hair.
"Well, that didn't work," Poppy said. "I think we need an expert."

"Poppy, I don't get it," Smidge said as they all entered a garden. "How is this Troll going to help Willow get control over her wings if she doesn't have them."
"She doesn't have wings, but she knows how to grow and shrink a certain part of her body," Poppy answered.
"I can do that, too," Cooper pointed out. "I didn't know girls have them, though."
"So, when do we meet her?" Branch asked, leaning against a purple pole next to another.
"You already have!" a voice shouted from above. Branch looked up to find the poles were actually a really long pair of legs, which shrunk down so the Troll attached to them would meet the Snack Pack face to face. She had bright orange pigtails and wore green overalls. She put a crown of flowers on Branch's head.
"That should bring a smile to that sad face," she said enthusiastically. Branch just scowled.
"Everyone, meet Legsly!" Poppy introduced. "Legsly, these are my friends!"
"Hi!" DJ Suki said cheerfully.
"We're Poppy's friends!" Cooper said.
Legsly laughed. "You must be Cooper. And the rest of you are Smidge, Satin, Chenille, DJ Suki, Guy Diamond, Branch, Biggie, and this little cutie is Mr. Dinkles."
"Meep!" Mr. Dinkles responded.
"He likes you," Biggie said.
Legsly smiled, and turned to the last Troll. "And this must be Willow."
"If I must, I must, but I'd rather be Trollfonso Cuarón," Willow replied.
"Are you kidding? You're the only Troll in the village with magic powers! You can shoot lightning, fire, ice, move stuff with your mind... You're one of a kind!"
"Well, I can't stretch my legs," Willow pointed out. "Which reminds me, Poppy said something about you possibly helping with my... Ow!"
Suddenly, Willow's wings sprouted back out again! Legsly gasped in shock.
"You have wings, too?!" she exclaimed. "That's amazing! You don't have to hair-glide, you can actually fly!"
"She could, but she needs your help controlling them," Poppy said as Willow's wings twitched.
"You've come to the right Troll," Legsly agreed. "I'd be more than happy to help you control your wings."
"Woo-hoo!" Willow cheered, only to accidentally freeze part of the garden. "Sorry."
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
"I'm not gonna lie, I wasn't always the graceful dancer I am now," Legsly confessed, dancing around in front of the Snack Pack. "When I got my first growth spurt, all I could do was wobble around. But then, I heard some pretty great music, found my groove, and now I'm dancing through life!"
To further prove her point, Legsly did a pirouette and ended her performance with jazz hands.
"Willow, if we can find your groove, you'll be flying with the eagles in no time!" she continued. "We're going to start off with some breathing exercises."
"I'm learning to fly, not giving birth," Willow pointed out.
"First thing's first, you need to calm down," Legsly instructed. "Just breath in, hold it back... and release all your troubles. Now you do it five times."
"Okay, but hang on a second," Willow said, and used her inhaler before taking a deep breath, and letting it go. She did it three more times, and by the fourth time, her wings retracted as she breathed in and spreaded back out as she released.
"That was perfect," Legsly said. "Now, you can breathe on your own. But I want you to imagine pulling back and releasing."
Willow nodded and closed her eyes. Willow pulled her wings back into her body, and found herself stretching them back out.
"Branch, she did it!" Poppy whispered, holding his hand.
"Yeah, I guess she did," he sniffed.
"Wow, that is helpful," Willow said to Legsly. "You're very good."
"I'm the best," Legsly corrected. "Now that you can control when to let your wings out, I think it's time you start flying."
"Lemme guess, I just gotta believe?" Willow asked.
"Not only that, but we need to find your groove," she added. "The groove is where it's at."
"I don't know if she can do this," Branch said nervously. "What if she falls, what if-"
"Branch, she's gonna do it," Poppy reassured him. "They all gotta fly and leave the nest eventually."
"DJ, hit me with some jams!" Legsly shouted. DJ Suki began playing music on her Wooferbug and Legsly danced to the beat. "Come on, Willow! Find your groove!"
"I think I got it," Willow said, and began flapping her wings to the beat. Unfortunately, DJ kept changing it, and threw off Willow's groove, causing her to fall in a bush. "Forget it, I'm going home."
"Willow, wait!" Poppy begged, but it was too late. Willow used her hair to swing through the trees. "I can't believe this. She has the ability to grow a pair of wings, and she's not going to try to fly with them?!"
"Technically, she tried twice," Branch pointed out. "Learning to fly is hard, Poppy. Especially when you're the only Troll who even has wings."
"Wait, that's it! Branch, you're a genius!" Poppy said excitedly, kissing his cheek.
Branch blushed madly. "Well, I don't know about that..."

"Let's see," Poppy muttered as she read a book. "Half a cup of Puffalo milk, Sparklepuff pollen, an egg shell, and three RazzleDazzle berries."
Branch entered Poppy's pod to find her boiling some sort of liquid.
"Poppy, what are you doing?" Branch asked skeptically.
"Willow's going to need another Troll with wings to teach her to fly," Poppy explained. "So, I found this book on spells, and I'm making a potion that can temporarily give someone wings."
"Poppy, you're my best friend, and I have to ask, are you sure you've thought this through?"
"No... I thought it through and turned it inside out!" Poppy answered as she poured the liquid into a cup. "Drink up!"
"You're kidding, right?" Branch said, glaring at the Troll queen.
"Well, if you won't, then I will!" Poppy declared, and slurped it down. Branch watched as her body started to glow...
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Willow, meanwhile, was sitting on her beanbag chair reading a book about the Darkness. She heard someone knocking on her door as she turned the page.
"It's open!" she shouted. Branch entered and noticed the book.
"What's that?" Branch asked.
"An old legend," Willow replied. "Apparently, the Darkness was created by a creature named Callisto, who lived on the Moon. Callisto was jealous of the Sun's warmth and light, so she created something called the Black Rock, and planted it into the Earth, so Darkness would take over, while the Sun blessed a magical creature with Light. As punishment for her betrayal, the Moon banished Callisto into an emptiness, but she can still be seen and heard by those she wants to be seen by. Eventually the Light vanished, and the Darkness began to take over the minds of magical creatures, and destroy those of the nonmagic, so the Sun and Moon came up with a solution together. The Moon planted seeds into the Earth, and the Sun shed his tears onto them, and they grew into colorful flowers. As the flowers died, the Trolls were born, creatures of hope, happiness, and harmony. It also says that the Trolls will restore the Light to destroy the Black Rock, and the Darkness will eventually die. Sounds crazy, doesn't it?"
"Well, I don't believe in legends, but I think it would be great if that kind of evil power no longer existed," Branch said. "I mean, we've seen what it does to other creatures' minds, and it consumes their souls. Not that it's gonna happen to you, you're still a good person."
This wasn't making Willow feel better. "What do you want, Branch?"
"Poppy sent me for you," Branch answered, and pulled her outside.
"Woo-hoo!" Poppy screamed as she flew past them with her new pair of wings. Unlike Willow's, they were a beautiful blend of pink, lavender and teal. "This is so fun!"
Willow was confused. "How did she...?"
"Magic potion," Branch answered.
Life's been so unsatisfying
Look, suddenly now I'm flying
Freewheeling from cloud to cloud to cloud
Wings spread, and the sky below me
There's no one to stop or slow me
Pure freedom and everything's allowed
Down there, I know there's tons of burdens I must bear, somewhere...
But from up here, the world looks so small
And suddenly life seems so clear
And from up here, you coast past it all
The obstacles just disappear
You never feel heavy or earthbound
No worries or doubts interfere
There's nothing but you
Looking down from the view from up here
"Willow, you gotta try this!" Poppy insisted as she landed in front of her friends.
Willow looked away nervously. "I don't know, Pops..."
"Relax, it's easy!" Poppy assured her, holding her by the arms as she carried her to the sky.
"You two, be careful!" Branch shouted as the girls began singing.
Stretch out with the wind behind you
Here we go
Float up, let the current find you
Look out below
Keep climbing, and sail from breeze to breeze
Stay close, don't leave me, please!
Suddenly, Willow spread her wings and clumsily flapped them. Poppy let go of her friend and watched as she figured it out.
Head up to the stratosphere-us
With only the stars to steer us
Just think of the possibilities
"I think I've got this!" Willow said, gaining confidence.
Below, we spend our whole lives trudging to and fro, now-
"Whoa!" Willow exclaimed as Poppy did a flip in the air.
And from up here
The world looks so wide
Yet, every horizon seems near
And from up here
No path is denied
You choose which direction you veer
And suddenly, you can breathe easy
Contented
Carefree
Cavalier
Just gliding on through
Looking down at the view from up here
Poppy and Willow began flying across many unique lands. One of them had an active volcano. At the base of it, a yellow Troll with fiery orange hair and glittery makeup covering her sparkling green eyes noticed them flying through the air. She focused more on Willow, and stared in awe.
"Ash, get your butt in here!" someone shouted. "Dad wants to talk to us!"
"Coming, Barb!" Ash shouted back, and headed back inside her home.
And from up here, the world is all yours
Each mountain and meadow and mere
And from up here, life's duties and chores
Are barely worth shedding a tear
As they flew across the ocean, Willow noticed mermaid-like aquatic Trolls breeching. She flew down to give one a high five, and back up to rejoin Poppy.
And all of the sky lies before us
Straight up to the far stratosphere
So head for the blue
And let's take in the view from up here
It's just me and you
Looking down at the view from up here
Suddenly, Poppy's wings disappeared and she found herself plummeting hundreds of feet to the ground, and screamed in terror along the way.
"I'll save you, buddy!" Willow shouted, and dived down to grab Poppy from underneath her arms. They laughed as Willow hovered just inches above the ground.
"Thank you, Poppy," Willow said. "This was a lot of fun."
"Well, that's what friends are for," Poppy replied. "Let's go home."
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••
That night, Poppy and Branch watched from the entrance of Willow's pod as she slumbered.
"Look at her, Branch," Poppy sighed. "I'd hate to see anything bad happen to her."
"I wish we could do something to help her," Branch said sadly. "It wasn't her fault she was cursed. She doesn't deserve what the world did to her."
"Well, we'll do what her dad wanted to do," Poppy suggested. "You know, before the alcoholism. He wanted to protect her from the Rattlecobra. We just need to find a way to protect her from... herself."
Willow stirred a little before opening her eyes.
"Poppy? Branch?" she mumbled.
"Oh, sorry Willow," Poppy apologized.
"We didn't mean to freak you out," Branch insisted. "We're leaving."
"Actually..." Willow interrupted, causing them to stop, "... can you guys sleep with me?"
"Um... okay," Poppy agreed. She nudged Branch with her elbow.
"Uh, yeah, sure," he muttered nervously.
Poppy and Branch crawled into the bed, with Willow in between them.
"Guys?" Willow said quietly. "I don't regret killing my mother... and that scares me..."
"Hey, it'll be okay," Branch whispered. "Just go to sleep."
Willow nodded and fell back asleep. Poppy reached her hand across to hold Branch's. He held onto it tightly as they drifted off.
Yeah, that was supposed to be a Broppy moment. I like to imagine Poppy and Branch being parents. Branch is the protective one and Poppy is the fun one.
Anyway, I thought I'd create this Trolls World Tour poster for Willow. I know, it looks weird.
I would've finished this sooner, but I keep getting distracted. Especially now that GeorgeBeard4 posted that clip on his Insta. It's got a lot of Broppy in it.
And yes, I made a joke about Alfonso Cuarón.
I'll update as soon as I can. Until then, please leave a vote! 🌟
