Chapter 27: Broken

Izaya was p*ssed. Not at (Y/N) going out late. She is just like him in many ways. He's not even p*ssed at the condition he saw her in at the hospital. No. The thing he was p*ssed about was the fact that the heroes were trying to cover up what happened to her. A student was nearly killed because of a hero's inability to watch his apprentice and the fault of the hero Native for trying to take on Hero Killer Stain on his own without back up. Look where it got him. Dead. Izaya will openly admit that he doesn't know the full situation. But as an info broker he could piece things together quite easily, and he knew for d*mn sure how things were supposed to work. He couldn't flat out attack heroes. He could go toe to toe with Shizuo, but taking on a bunch of heroes at once might be a bit difficult. Well...maybe not depending on how he went about it. But Izaya wasn't exactly a physical fighter. He preferred battles of the mind. And or, manipulating things from the shadows.

Izaya sighed, looking at (Y/N)'s door. Ever since she had returned she barely left the apartment. Spending most of her time sleeping or working. She wasn't eating much, and barely took off her coat, despite the temperatures. And Izaya was getting concerned. He stared at her door before getting up and walking over. He knocked on the door. "(Y/N), you alright in there?" He called. "I'm fine..." Came the short and quiet reply. Bulls*it. Izaya thought, picking up on the her shaky tone. No matter how quiet or muffled her voice, he's always been able to pick up when things upset her. Izaya sighed a bit before thinking. "Hey (Y/N), how much longer do you have til your school starts back up?" He asked. "Um..." She trailed off. "Tomorrow is when it starts back up..." She responded. "Get up. We're going on a job. You've been moping long enough." Izaya said. No response. He heard a sigh and a small thud. A few minutes later (Y/N) walked out. She looked like a mess. Izaya sighed a bit. "Come here." He grumbled. He grabbed her wrist gently and led her over to one of the chairs. "Sit here for a second." He said.

Izaya returned a few seconds later with a hair brush and started brushing out her hair. "What are you doing?" (Y/N) asked. "You look like a mess (Y/N). You haven't been keeping up with your hair, I can tell." He responded. (Y/N) was silent. Izaya shook his head slightly as he continued brushing her hair. "Depression episode?" He said in a questioning tone. The female grew tense. "You feel like a failure don't you? Because despite being as powerful as you are, you could barely protect your classmate, right? You had to be rescued. And even then, you barely survived." Izaya said. (Y/N) clenched her fists, gritting her teeth. "(Y/N), you don't always have to be the strongest and most powerful. I know that you think you do, and you want to be the strongest. So that you can protect everyone. But (Y/N), everyone has their flaws. Their weaknesses. And as Info Brokers, we seem to have it the most together. But deep down, even we are not invincible and untouchable." Izaya said. "We feel the most conflicted. And the most temptation. We seem like we have our act together. But Info Brokers like us, we fight our own inner turmoils daily. And we constantly feel like we aren't as good as we can be. That we lose. When I first started out as an Info Broker here, I never felt like I won a battle. I felt like I was constantly losing. That I constantly picked the wrong side. But then I realized something. And so, I ask you this." Izaya trailed off, continuing to work on (Y/N)'s hair. "Is your heart still beating? Are you still breathing (Y/N)? If so, you're alive. And as Info Brokers, as long as we're alive, we've won. As long as our hearts can still beat, and as long as we can breathe, it's our victory." He continued. "We smile through our pain. And as long as we can still do that, we haven't lost." Izaya said, finishing up with (Y/N)'s hair. He tied it into a braid with a hair tie he had on his wrist. (Y/N) turned to look at him before noticing her hair. "When did you-how did you-since when can you braid hair!?" (Y/N) asked. Izaya chuckled. "I have two younger sisters. I learned because it would get them to leave me alone. Never really forgot it." He explained. (Y/N) was silent and Izaya smiled at her a bit. Patting her head. "I won't pretend to know the full situation of what you're going through. But I can piece things together easily. I know how to read people. And I've known you since you were young (Y/N). I know right now you probably feel like you're alone. Like you don't belong. You might even feel conflicted about which side you belong on. But (Y/N), you aren't alone. And you'll always have a home here. I can't tell you what side you belong on. Only you can decide that. But know this, no matter what side you're on, as a completely neutral Info Broker, I'll support you from the shadows." Izaya said. He pat her shoulder. "Now c'mon. Let's go mess around with Shizu-chan for a bit. That always seems to cheer you up."

~Time Skip~

(Y/N) smiled a bit, pulling Izaya out of the way of a street sign getting tossed at them. She picked up a street sign of her own and hurled it back at Shizuo with a small laugh. She was still broken. Shattered even. But, she needed to stay strong. For everyone. She couldn't let her loyalties waver. She couldn't let her end goal be twisted. Love is a mysterious thing. It can change a person, make them do things they wouldn't normally do. It can drive someone to the brink of insanity. But it can make a person stronger. Whether they come out of it with a partner by their side, or a broken heart. They will always become stronger. Love is a wonderful thing. But it's dangerous. And fickle. Izaya was right. He may not know the full situation, but his words did help. (Y/N) can still smile through her pain. She can still laugh. Her heart still beats, and she is still breathing. And as long as she can do those things, she hasn't lost. But as she runs beside the raven haired Information Broker, secrets gnawed at the back of their minds. Izaya knew a few things. A lot of them in fact. Things that he wanted to tell (Y/N), but he hesitates. Not wanting to damage her further. Unsure of how she'd react to the secrets he contained within his head. (Y/N) wanted to talk to Izaya about everything. She's never hesitated to tell him things before. But she knows deep down that he keeps things from her. And as she's grown older, she knows its necessary. She isn't Izaya's ten year old apprentice anymore. And while he can still read her like an open book, she can read him just as well. She knows that Izaya always knows more than he lets on. And that if he didn't know the full situation currently, he could probably figure it out. Or get d*mn close to the truth.

And she was right. Izaya had known from the start about Shoto's villainy. And that was just one of the secrets he had yet to inform her about.
