The Almost People - Two

The Doctor had been gone for around ten minutes and the temperature was getting significantly higher. "These temperature gauges are rising. Jennifer and Rory must have shut off the underground cooling vents." Cleaves stared staring at one of the gauges.

"Why do that?" Dickens frowned. "They'll kill us."

"There's a million gallons of boiling acid under our feet."

"And now it's heating up the whole island." The Ganger Doctor added. "How long till it blows?"

The ground then rumbled. "Gangers or no Gangers, we need to get the hell out of here."

Cleaves nodded and grabbed the comm. "Shuttle, we need evac. Where are you? Can you hear me? Can you-" she then winced and clutched her head in pain. "Cleaves?" The Time Lords looked at her worryingly. "Cleaves?" She went to get up and the Time Lords shook their heads. "Cleaves, sit down."

"I'm fine." She protested.

"You don't look it." The Stone announced, flashing her sonic at her. "I'm waiting for results, so let it go."

"It's a very deep parietal clot." The Stone said reading the results.

"How can you possibly?" She frowned. "Inoperable?"

"On Earth, yes." The Doctor answered.

"Well, seeing as Earth's all that's on offer." She hummed. "I'm no healthy spring chicken, and you're no weatherman." She looked at the Doctor. "Right?"

There was then a larger rumble. "Something just cracked," Amy said to the Time Lords. "I heard it."

"Yeah, we can't stay here. Let's go."

"He's right." Jimmy nodded. "Let's shift."

"Cleaves to Shuttle. Respond. We need to move, and we can't be collected from the Evac tower."

"Give us the codeword."

"The codeword is..." there was then an even louder rumble and finally a bang. The controls then cut off and alarms started to blare.

"Cleaves?" The Ganger Doctor questioned. "Cleaves, it's dead. It's dead. We need to get out of here. We need to get back downstairs and get those vents back on." He ordered taking grasp of the Stone's hand. The two of them standing up. "Come on."

  ---------------------------------------------------------------

The group continued to head to the thermostate room, stopping at a corridor. Eyes of the flesh stuck to the walls staring at the group.

"Ah." The Ganger Doctor looked at the eyes stepping into the corridor with the Time Lady. "The eyes have it."

"Why are they here?" Amy asked her own eyes fixed onto the flesh ones on the walls.

"To accuse." He answered spinning around, widening his arms. "Us."

"Ignore them," Cleaves told Amy motioning her to walk past. "It's not far." The red-headed human did just that, stepping as far away from the wall with the flesh eyes on as possible while she hurried past.

  ---------------------------------------------------------------

"It's a chemical chain reaction now." The Ganger said shaking his head in the thermostat room. "I can't stop it. This place is going to blow sky high."

"Exactly how long have we got?"

"An hour?" The Doctor guessed. "Five seconds? Er, somewhere in between."

"The Stone sighed wishing there was more they could do. A klaxon then loudly went off and the eyes of everyone in the room shouted before the Doctors Ganger was shouting, mainly pushing the Time Lady. "Out!"

The humans did as told and they all legged it out of the room, unexpectedly bumping into Rory in the process. "Thank God." Rory breathed hugging Amy as tight as possible. "All right?"

"Oh, Rory." She shakily replied. "Oh, Rory."

"There's a way out." He quickly replied. "Jennifer found it. A secret tunnel under the crypt."

"From the crypt?" Cleaves frowned. "It's not on the schematics."

"It runs right out of the monastery. Maybe even under the TARDIS, Doctor, Stone. Follow me." The Ganger nodded with the Time Lady and they followed the man through a corridor and into a room. As soon as they found the TARDIS she could find the Doctor and they all could get out of this mess, sort out the Gangers of the humans and be on their way. "We can't leave without Buzzer," Jimmy told Cleaves who nodded in agreement.

"I'll go back for him."

"Er, Stone, look." Rory nervously said looking slightly worried at the Time Lady who frowned. "I'd better tell you. I haven't been quite straight with you or the Doctor."

He went on to explain before the man was cut off by Ganger Jennifer who slammed the door and locked it on the Time Lady, the Doctors Ganger and Amy.

"Rory!" The Ganger Doctor shouted as the Stone started to hit on the small glass porthole that abled them to see Rory and Jen.

"Hang on, Jen." He quickly looked at her. "We don't need to lock them up. We should just show them what we've found."

"I don't think so."

"Rory Pond." The Ganger Doctor shouted. "Roranicus Pondicus!"

"Open the door!" The Stone ordered.

"Rory, What the hell are you playing at?" Amy asked looking annoyed.

"They've been throwing away old Flesh and leaving it to rot. Alive." He explained slightly wincing at her tone. "I think the world should see that."

"Rory, there is no time." The Stone informed him. "The factory's about to explode."

"Are you sure about this?" Rory turned to Jenifer. "Because I'm not. Let them out."

"The little girl got strong."

"What?"

"The little girl lost on the moors in her red wellies, looking for a way home? Well, she got strong, Rory. I told you, remember?"

"But that wasn't." He started to talk before stopping himself slightly shocked. "It was the other Jennifer that told me about being a little girl."

"Oh?" She smiled her eyes quickly changing to what the Gangers eyes looked like. Rory stared at her horrified realising what she had done. "What other Jennifer?"

"Well, the, the er." He stumbled. "Wait, you tricked me?" The ganger Jenifer then grabbed his arm pulling him away. "Let me go. I'm opening the door. Let me." It was no use though and she continued to pull him away. He quickly turned back to Amy and apologised. "I'm sorry!"

"No!" Amy cried hitting the door. The Stone gently placed an arm on her shoulder, she was then hugging the human trying to get her to calm down.

Cleaves looked up just as her Ganger was at the porthole. "We have to be free."

"I'm sorry too, Miranda," Cleaves replied. "Of all the humans in the world, you had to pick the one with the clot. But hey, them's the breaks. Welcome to the human race." The Ganger then walked off.

The Ganger Doctor scanned the vat of acid with the Stones sonic that she had given him while she comforted Amy until she was fine. The Stone now stood beside the Doctors Ganger watching closely.

"This is going to overheat and fill the room with acid, just as a point of interest." The Stone shot him a look making him wince slightly.

"And we can't stop it?"

"Just as a point of interest?" He asked. "No."

"I'm going to hit you around the head in a moment." The Stone warned taking her sonic back from him. "Just a point of interest."

"Sorry dear." He mumbled. She was worried and he clearly knew that. She honestly didn't want either of the Doctors to die, Ganger or not because to her they were both the Doctor and currently one of them was missing. She couldn't even get a telepathic link with him, whether it was the acid or just her slightly panicking she had no idea. "Is there a lid or something we can place on this?" He asked.

"Yes," Dickens replied quickly picking up the lid before lowering it onto the vat as Jimmy shook his head.

"It'll never hold her."

"If you have a better plan, I'm all ears." The Ganger Doctor replied. "In fact, if you have a better plan, I'll take you to a planet where everyone is all ears."

As soon as we get out of this mess though." The Stone cut in. "And I have had some mint tea. After two Doctors and all of this I could really use some."

"I'll get you all the mint tea in the Universe." The Ganger Doctor replied.

"Good." The Ganger Doctor kissed the side of her head. They watched as Jimmy held the lid on the boiling vat down.

It bubbled slightly and then escaped as they all- but Jimmy jumped back. The man cried out in pain and feel the the floor his chest completely burnt. The Ganger of Jimmy then ran in pushing everyone out of the way. "Let me through." He ordered.

The Ganger Doctor sadly shook his head. "There's nothing we can do." He explained. "The acid's reached his heart."

Ganger Jimmy swallowed hard and tightly held his hand. "Hang in there, mate."

"I'm quite handsome from this angle." Jimmy weakly muttered, smiling with his Ganger who must have agreed.

His expression then changed. "I'm sorry." The Ganger apologised to Jimmy. "I'm the fake. Adam deserves his real dad."

"Shut up. "

"What do you want me to do?" He asked. "Anything. Just say."

"The way things are, mate, it's up to you now. Be a dad. You remember how." He then raised his other hand placing it in his Gangers and let go. A wedding ring fell into Ganger Jimmy's hand as the other Jimmy died.

"Jimmy Wicks, you're a dad."

The group made their way to the dining hall. The Stone grinned her eyes meeting the Doctors who was stood leaning against a table, his arms crossed. A large smile grew on his face and he widened his arms watching the Time Lady run up to him, his arms tightly wrapped around her as she hugged the Doctor until she let go and hit him around the back of the head.

"Ow." He mumbled even though she didn't hit him hard enough to make it properly hurt. She wouldn't dare do that to him no matter if she wanted to or not. "What was that for."

"That's for making me worry." She sternly replied as the Doctors Ganger smiled at his other self and then walked up behind Ganger Jimmy who was talking to Adam.

"When are you coming home?" The little boy asked, his hands messing with the end of his pajama top.

"Daddy's coming home today, Adam." The Ganger Doctor cut in making the man smile and the boy jump up and down slightly. "Yay."

"Now we need to move." The Ganger Doctor said spinning around. His eyes finding the Stones who nodded while taking the Doctors hand. They all quickly left, running through the corridors that were now dimly lit. The Doctor and the Stone skidded to a halt seeing Ganger Jennifer

"Run." The Doctor ordered. Nobody moved. "Run." He shouted again and still every one of the humans stood frozen. The Stone swallowed hard and tightened her grip on the Doctors hand and slightly pulled while he shouted even louder, scaring the humans into a sprint. "Run!" Small pieces of dust then fell from the ceiling that was giving in. "Ooo, roof's going to give."

"Let's hope it isn't giving in on us." The Stone muttered as they ran through a door marked 'No humans'

"We have to stop her." The Ganger Dicken stated. "This door doesn't lock."

"No, but the far one does." Dicken then ran through the door and back down the passage. Struggling to pull the jammed door shut as the Ganger of Jenifer approached. He finally managed to pull it free and slammed it shut, locking himself with the Ganger creature.

"No!" Ganger Dickens cried out as Dickens screamed before he died.

There was more dust as the Time Lords looked up, their backs pressed against the door. The Doctors Ganger also looked up and grinned. "Here she comes." The TARDIS then broke through from above as the Ganger Doctor jumped out of the way. "Oh, she does like to make an entrance." The Doctor grinned.

"Yeah."

"Just like someone else." They both said together grinning and then pointing at each other.

"That was more with my past self." The Stone fondly smiled at them.

"Ah but you still enjoy it." The Ganger protested.

The Doctor nodded kissing his wife's cheek. "That she does."

The Doctor's Ganger then quickly switched places with the Time Lords. The Stone fished out her TARDIS key and unlocked the door. "Everyone move." The Doctor ordered.

"Go. Go, go, go." The Doctors Ganger backed him up.

"Get on board." Ganger Cleaves told the human. "Go."

"I'm not leaving."

"Go." She firmly repeated making the other woman faintly smile and run into the blue box.

"Hey, hey." Amy looked at the Doctors Ganger, still believing that he was the Time Lord. "Now's our chance."

"I have to stay." He shook his head. "Hold this door closed. Give you time to dematerialise."

"Oh, don't be crazy," Amy replied. "Okay, what happens to you?"

"Well, this place is just about to explode. But I can stop her."

"But the Stone." Amy looked at the Time Lady who stayed silent throughout. "What about her?"

"This doesn't concern my wife."

"But if you die she dies." Amy protested. "That's how it works right?"

"Amy." The Stone warned.

"Stone please tell him not to." She looked between the Doctors. "Both of you can survive this, okay? There has to be a way."

"Or perhaps you think I should stay instead?" The Doctor cut in. Stepping forward to stand beside the Time Lady. "Mister Smith."

"No, of course not." Amy shook her head turning to him. "But look, this man, I've flown with him, you know? And you are amazing and yeah, I misjudged you, but you're not him. I'm sorry."

"Amy, we swapped shoes."

"I'm the Doctor." The Doctor who was standing beside the Stone said.

"And I'm the Flesh."

"You can't be." She shook her head looking at the Ganger pressed up against the door. "You're the real him."

"He isn't." The Stone said in a quiet voice. "They swapped shoes when we were fixing the controls."

"What?" She stared at the other redhead.

"I'm the original Doctor, Amy. We had to know if we were truly the same. It was important, vital we learn about The Flesh, and we could only do that through your eyes."

Suddenly Amy ran forward and hugged the Doctors Ganger, slightly shocking him before he hugged her back. "I never thought it possible."

"What?"

"You're twice the man I thought you were."

They stood quietly for a couple of seconds until the Doctors voice grew quiet and serious. "Push, Amy." The woman froze not sure of what he was talking about. "But only when she tells you to."

"Amy, come on!" Rory shouted. She then let of go the Ganger and stepped out of the way.

"Well, my death arrives, I suppose."

"But this one, we're not invited to." The Doctor quietly muttered making the Stone stare at him.

"What?" She eyed him as he winced slightly. Trying to make it so she didn't notice; what didn't get past her though. "Doctor." She narrowed her eyes at him when he didn't answer.

"I'll explain later." He quickly replied trying to give her a reassuring smile. The Doctors Ganger curiously watched them before he nodded. It was something he wasn't going to witniss. Even when it did slightly worry him due to the Stone he knew there was nothing he could possibly do. "Your molecular memory can survive this, you know." He told his Ganger. "It may not be the end." He then tossed his screwdriver at his counterpart.

"Yeah, well, if I turn up to nick all your biscuits, and your tea." He nodded at the Time Lady who lightly sniffed. "Then you'll know you were right, won't you."

The Stone swallowed hard and the Doctors Gangers face grew soft. He opened his arms and let out a small sigh when she ran into them, he tightened them around her and held her close, allowing her to hide her face in his chest. "Hey, hey." He murmured rubbing her back. "It's not the end for you."

"But it is for you."

"You still got him." He nodded over at the Doctor who stood there sadly watching the two. The Stone sniffed looking over at the Time Lord.

"But it isn't fair." She murmured looking at the Ganger.

"We knew something like this would happen."

"But it hurts."

"I know and I'm sorry." He whispered running a hand through her hair. "I love you Stone."

"I love you too Doctor." She replied kissing him. The Ganger Doctor returnee her kiss and let go of the Time Lady soon after knowing that if he didn now he never would. Slowly she made her way over to the Doctor who gave her a soft, sad smile while taking her hand and kissing the top of her head.

"Doctor!" Amy shouted. The Doctor pulled her back. "No, please."

"You too, Cleaves." The Ganger Doctor ordered. "Off you pop."

"I'm staying."

"This is not the time for grand gestures."

"Says the king of grand gestures." She shot back. "This is my factory. I'm not going anywhere."

The Doctors Ganger gave in. "Foreman Miranda Cleaves, marvellous. Beware of imitations."

"Clear off out of here, the lot of you." She ordered and they nodded. The Doctor took the Stone's hand and they ran into the TARDIS which soon dematerialised.

The Doctor and the Stone stood together starting at the Time rotor for a moment. The Stone swallowed hard squeezing the Doctors hand which he returned quietly sighing. Amy watched them both, they both looked horrible. Both for different reasons with the same outcome: death.

The Doctor shook himself slightly. "The energy from the TARDIS will stabilise the Gangers for good." He nodded over at Ganger Jimmy and Ganger Dicken. "They're people now."

"And what happens to me?" Cleaves asked. "I still have this." She pointed to her head.

"Ah, that's not a problem." The Doctor reassured. "I think my wife has something for that." He looked over at the Time Lady who nodded looking around. "It's small and red and tastes like burnt onions." She then held up a vial. "Ha." He nodded over at her.

"There you go Cleaves, that'll get rid of your blood clot." She informed tossing it over.

The Doctor smiled slightly and placed an arm around the Stones waist his other finding a red balloon. "Happy endings."

---------------------------------------------------------------

The Time Lords quietly watched Jimmy. They stood by the TARDIS, the waves crashing in the distance.

"Hey!" Jimmy called making the young boy spin around. A large grin forming on his face. "Hello, bud."

"Daddy, you're back." He ran up jumping into his father's arms.

"Hello, my boy." Jimmy smiled spinning him around. "How are you doing?"

"Doctor?" The Stone asked not looking at him, her eyes fixed on the salty sea waves. "Back before we left-." She paused closing her eyes for a moment. "What did you mean?"

"Just a small joke."

"Doctor." She looked at him. "Please." She whispered taking his hand tightly in hers. "It's scaring me."

The Doctor sighed swallowing and licking his lips. "I will tell you." He reassured. "I wouldn't keep anything from you but not here." He looked around shaking his head. "Not like this."

The Time Lady nodded. "Okay." She smiled slightly and kissed the corner of his mouth. "I trust you as always."

"you too, dear."

  ---------------------------------------------------------------

After leaving Jimmy with his son the Time Lords brought the TARDIS to the headquarters of Cleaves' company. The group stepped out

"You really want us to do this?" Cleaves looked between the Time Lords.

The Doctor nodded at her. "Your company's telling the world that the situation is over. You need to get in there and tell them that the situation's only just begun. Make them understand what they're doing to the Flesh. Make them stop. Dicken, remember, people are good. In their bones, truly good. Don't hate them, will you?"

"How can I hate them?" He asked. "I'm one of them now."

"Yeah." The Stone nodded before she swallowed, closing her eyes and looking down for a moment. "And just remember, people died. Don't let that be in vain."

The Doctor nodded placing a hand on her back. "Make what you say in that room count."

"Ready?" Cleaves asked. "Side-by-side."

"You got it, boss."

Cleaves opened the door and let Dicken first step inside. Cameras flashed and reporters began to talk. The Time Lords stood there for a moment, staring at their reflections in the glass.

"You okay?" Amy asked.

"I said breathe, Pond." The Doctor said. "Remember? Well, breathe."

"Why?"

"Breathe."

Amy then suddenly gasped in pain. The Stone guiltily looked down at the ground.

Rory worryingly placed an arm on her back as Amy cried out again. "What's wrong with her?" He looked at the Stone.

"Get her into the TARDIS." The Time Lady replied following the Doctor into the TARDIS. They both walked up and stood in front of the console.

"Doctor, Stone!" Rory looked between them. "What is happening to her?"

"Contractions." They both replied.

"Contractions?" He repeated questioningly.

"She's going into labour." The Doctor added.

"Did he say?" Amys' eyes widened looking at Rory. "No. No, no." She placed her arms around his neck. "Of course, he didn't." She whispered to him. "Rory, I don't like this. Ow."

"You're going to have to start explaining some of this to me, Doctor."

"What, the birds and the bees?"

"Doctor." The Stone whispered warningly she then turned around to look at the humans. "She's having a baby."

"We needed to see the Flesh in its early days." The Doctor explained. "That's why I scanned it. That's why we were there in the first place. We were going to drop you off for fish and chips first, but things happened and there was stuff and shenanigans." He faintly smiled. "Beautiful word, shenanigans."

"It hurts." Amy whimpered.

"But you're okay?"

"Breathe." The Doctor cut in spinning around. "We needed enough information to block the signal to the Flesh."

"What signal?" Amy asked making the Stones face fall.

The Time Lady looked right at Amy. "The signal to you."

"Doctor" she whispered again. "Stone."

"Stand away from her, Rory." The Doctor ordered.

"Why?" He asked and then tightened his grip on his wife. "No. And why?"

"Given what we've learned, I'll be as humane as I can, but I need to do this and you need to stand away!" He raised his voice. The Stone took the Doctors hand and ran her thumb across his knucks to calm him down.

"Please." The Time Lady softly asked her companion. "It's for both of your safety Rory. Please move away from Amy."

Rory looked between the Doctor and the Stone. He closed his eyes for a moment and let go of Amy's hand, moving away.

"No. No." Amy croaked reaching out for Rory. "Doctor, Stone, I am frightened. I'm properly, properly scared." She admitted her voice thick with the tears that threatened to come out of her eyes.

"Don't be." The Doctor softly replied, walking up to her with the Stone. "Hold on. We're coming for you. I swear it. Whatever happens, however hard, however far, we will find you."

"I'm right here." She said taking their hands.

"No." The Stone lightly shook her head. "You're not. You haven't been here for a long, long time." She stepped back the with the Doctor who raised his sonic screwdriver at her.

"Oh, no." Amy gasped and then became liquid flesh.

  ---------------------------------------------------------------

The Stone quietly walked up to the Doctor who leant against the railing in the console room. "How is he?"

"Scared." The Stone replied standing beside him. "I think I am as well." She admitted.

"Oh dear." The Doctor whispered placing his arm around her. "We will find her."

"That isn't what I'm worried about." She admitted looking up at him. "Can you please tell me now."

"You're-" the Doctor began, pausing and wishing that he didn't have to tell her. "Amy said she was invited, by us to see our deaths."

The Stone stared at him for a moment. "Are you sure-."

"Stone I'm positive." He cut in and closed his eyes, gently resting his head against hers. "And it wasn't specifically our deaths but rather yours."

"Mine." The Stone whispered remembering to how ghostly Amy looked at her in the diner before they met the silence. "The Lake." She murmured.

"I'm sorry." The Doctor whispered tightly hugging her. "I swear I will keep you safe, I will never let anything happen to you, Stone."

"Doctor."

"I will protect you-." He tried to cut in again.

The Stone sighed for a moment as the Doctor began to babble about him stopping anything from harming her, she closed her eyes before snapping. "Doctor!" She shouted making him stop. "We can't change what has happened and what is going to happen. I will die Doctor but you have to remember." She fixed him with a sharp look. "You die as well and from what I know you die on your own somewhere but our link ensures that we will both die and I'm not trying to make this sound as depressing as it does but we won't be alone, not really, sweetheart.

The Doctor let out a sigh and slowly nodded. "I know." He whispered stroking his hand through her hair and kissing the top of her head. "love you."

"Love you too sweetheart."
