Fawn's POV

Once Alastor successfully signed off from his afternoon broadcast, we decided to go ahead and take Julie to mamas.

We didn't drive today, so it'll take a minute to get there and then go to Tom's house.

On our way out, we caught Tom and let him know what was up. He was in the main office, looking over some paperwork when we came across him.

"Hey, Tom, Al and I are headed out," I said, walking up to him. Julie was in my arms, her head laid on my shoulder.

It's right about her nap time, so she shouldn't be too much trouble for Edith, hopefully she'll sleep the whole time since we're springing this on her so last minute.

Though, I doubt she'll mind.

He looked up and blinked, seeming caught off guard. I guess he was really invested in those documents.

Setting them aside, his relaxed expression lifted into a broad smile, "of course! Don't worry about getting there any certain time, Niffty and I will be waiting regardless. I'll see you folks later!" He said beginning to walk up to the door, "and you, little miss," he said softer, patting Juliette on the head.

She made some incoherent noises and lifted her head, waving over my shoulder as we started to leave.

"Bye bye, Tom!" She said, and I gasped, pausing at the door that Al had opened up for me.

I looked up at him, excitement flooding through my veins.

Tom chuckled, "bye bye, darling! I will see you tomorrow," he replied, and I had to contain myself until we stepped outside, and I turned to Al with a huge smile on my face.

"Did you hear that! She said it all by herself!" I whisper shouted, patting her back and then hugging her to my shoulder with a happy giggle.

She giggled back, and snuggled closer to me.

Al hummed next to me, and I looked over to see him looking at us from the corner of his eyes before he looked forward again. There was a calm smile on his face, his body language comfortable.

He still held his perfect posture and had one arm behind his back, the other one held out for me to hold on to.

"I did hear her, my love. You're a wonderful teacher, it only took her a short amount of time to pick that up!"

He praised me and then sighed as if something were on his mind.

I squeezed his arm, looking over at him, "what's up, baby?" I asked him, keeping my tone quiet so I didn't catch the eavesdropping ears of anyone around us.

He was silent for a moment, just until we got to a strip of sidewalk hat was practically empty.

"I'm just rather curious. What could Tom have to show us? It's been bugging me all damn day," he chuckled and I practically snapped my neck looking over at him, my eyes wide after hearing him swear.

After a moment his eyes widened as well, and he stopped in his tracks, looking over at me with a horror stricken expression on his smiling face.

I glanced at Julie, and then watched Al let out a relieved sigh.

"She's asleep..." he breathed, and then we continued walking.

Shaking my head, I chuckled and nudged his side, "watch your mouth, daddy," I chided lightly, and then hummed thoughtfully, "but...I mean, I don't know what it could be. If it's what he's been working on whenever he leaves, then I'm excited," I said, my smile widening.

"Yes, I suppose I am a bit curious of that as well. I always assumed he had a sick mother or a pet of some sort, but after visiting his house, that is not the case," he replied.

I hummed softly, the door to mama's shop just becoming visible in the distance.

Whatever it is that he's showing us, Niffty already knows what it is. That much is obvious just by how she reacted.

So, if Niffty is excited about it, it can't be anything bad.

We made it to the door, and Al opened it up for me. There was no one inside, just like usual around this time of day.

Well, no one except for Edith, who was over at a clothing rack, fidgeting with the spacing of the blouses.

Upon hearing the soft jingle of someone entering her shop, she looked up from her ministrations and then a huge smile broke out across her face.

"Children! Oh, what a wonderful surprise, and I see you brought my grandbaby!" She greeted us as she came over, and Julie shifted in my arms upon hearing mama's voice.

She pushed herself up so she could turn and look, and Al and I became an afterthought the moment she laid eyes on the older woman.

"Meme!" She squealed happily, nearly hurling herself out of my arms to get to her. Edith laugh and took her from me gently, kissing her cheek.

"Hello sugar plum!" She said and I giggled watching the familiar scene.

"So, what brings y'all by? I have a feeling it's to drop this lil' one off so you can go do somethin, am I right?" The older woman asked, snapping her fingers and causing a small sucker to appear in her fingers.

She gave it to Juliette, who happily accepted the candy and popped it in her mouth. We don't usually give her candy, so it's alright that she gets a treat or two when she goes to see Edith.

Al chuckled, "you know us too well, mama...our friend and employer Thomas has invited us to his house to "show us something" as he put it. So, we will be heading over there for a bit to see what that is about," he explained, and I nodded.

Edith hummed, "well, that's intriguing. Alrighty, you kids go have fun. I'll take care of Julie while ya gone!" She said, the child in question having tuned all of us out as she hounded this sucker.

"Thank you, mama, and we're very sorry about springing this on you so last minute," I apologized, only feeling it's right since we kinda barged in without warning.

She scoffed and waved it off, a smile dimpling her cheeks, "oh, dear, don't you apologize. Anytime I spend with this little one is precious and welcome. However, I'd appreciate a little warning next time you bring that one," she jammed her thumb towards Al, and he gasped in mock hurt, placing a hand against his chest.

I giggled, "will do, and we shouldn't be too long, maybe just a couple hou–"

The sound of something hitting the floor cut me off, and everyone looked to see Julie had managed to drop her sucker. There was a split second of tension, everyone bracing for the baby to cry about her fallen candy...but what actually happened was far more shocking.

"Damn." She said angrily, ultimately sounding adorable but at the same time...

Slowly I looked over at Al with a tight smile, and it was deathly quiet in the shop. Julie was still reaching down for her dropped sucker, not realizing at all what she'd just said.

It was honestly a little impressive that she used the word correctly, if I'm going to be honest.

From the look on Al's face, he was thinking the exact same thing before Edith spoke and he suddenly became ridged with a terrified smile on his face.

"So," she began calmly, "which one of you taught my granddaughter a swear word?" She asked, just the slightest bit of purple burning in her irises as the atmosphere around us became a bit colder.

"Fawn did it!" Alastor blurted faster than I've ever heard him speak before, then immediately turned around and sprinted out of the shop.

I gasped, looking to where he'd run with betrayal in my eyes, "you liar!" I called after him, laughing while he ran away from certain imminent danger.

Turning back to Edith I sighed and shook my head, "he let it slip while we were walking," I explained, and she rolled her eyes and chuckled.

"It happens to the best of us, dear. Don't be too harsh with him," she said, and then looked down at Julie, "wave bye to mommy, sugar!"

I turned to leave, waving to my baby with a smile, "bye bye sweetheart!"

She waved back, "bye bye mama!"

My heart melted and I finally left the shop, going to locate my coward of a fiancé.

He was a little ways down the street, examining his nails with a smile before he looked up and saw my glaring face as I approached him.

"So, how'd it go?" He asked me cheekily, and I simply walked past him.

"You're sleeping on the couch." I said casually, and he took a long stride to catch up with me, scooping my arm up with his own.

I glanced up at him, waiting for a reaction. He was still smiling, and then sighed.

"Damn."

**

The butlers opened the doors for us as we approached. The setup was the same as last time, and the interior was just as breathtaking.

Alastor's steps clicked as we walked, mine sounding a bit softer due to the flats I had chosen in place of my heels.

It was rather quiet in the house, almost as if no one was home at all. The sound of the front door closing behind us made me jump.

Al caressed my arm soothingly, and we slowed to a stop in the middle of the foyer.

"Thomas?" I called out, my voice bouncing off the marble.

Footsteps sounded above us, and we both looked over towards the stairs and up to the balcony that looked over the foyer. Niffty appeared, bouncing excitedly as she spotted us.

"Finally! Hey guys, come on up here, I'll take you to him," she said, hardly containing herself.

Al and I shared a curious glance before he began leading us up the steps, holding my hand to make sure I wouldn't fall.

Niffty met us at the top, promptly taking both of our free hands and dragging us down the hallway.

"This way!" She sang, and I chuckled at her obvious excitement. Al was still walking somewhat normally compared to both of us since his legs were basically the length of Niffty's entire body.

Soon enough, we were standing in front of a closed door. The familiar piece of wood poked a memory in my brain that I hadn't thought of since the day.

This was the door he kept locked, normally. I remember him telling me something...

That I'd see it one day, or something like that. I guess today is the day.

Niffty stood in front of the door, and held her hands out, "ok, so first things first. Do not touch it unless he tells you to...or gives you permission. He's really excited to show you guys," she said and then grabbed the handle, "ready?"

We both nodded, and she turned the handle and pushed the door open.

It was dark, and we all walked in. I was a bit confused for a second until the door closed behind us, leaving us in complete darkness.

"Uh...Niff?" I asked, but it was quiet. The only thing I could really feel was Al's hand in mine.

Then I had to shield my eyes when the lights came on suddenly, and standing in the center of the room was Tom. Next to him was something covered in a black cloth.

Niffty was on the other side, looking like a little assistant.

"Friends!" He bellowed, "welcome to my home, and I am pleased to finally share with you this project I have been working on for a few painstaking years...but it was worth it in the end. It's revolutionary...and quite possibly may change the world we live in," he built up the tension, and I raised an eyebrow before glancing over at Al.

He had a curious expression on his face, watching our friend put on a show for us.

Tom lowered his tone and smirked as he began to pace, "now, I remember when I learned about the photograph, and I always thought it was fantastic how man could capture a single moment, and freeze it in time forever...and then the radio! A voice, projected across an entire nation of people! However...something never quite sat right with me about the separation of these medias. So...I developed a machine that can do both, showing a moment in time the second it happened, and capturing not only a still image, but one that moves."

My eyes widened.

No way.

No fucking way.

Did Thomas invent the fucking—

He ripped the cover off of the object, revealing a large piece of technology. It was black, and sleek looking. My jaw dropped and I couldn't even contain my shock.

It looked like a huge radio, with dials and switches on the front...except on top of a larger box was a smaller one with a medium sized circular lens attached to the front.

Al and I were both shocked into silence, and Tom stared at us as he awaited some sort of reaction.

Then Al cleared his throat, "uh...it's...spectacular, my friend but...what does it do?"

The excitement in our boss's face was evident as he pulled out something that looked like an old camera.

"Well, Alastor my friend I am glad you asked...I use this photograph device to take a succession of rapid pictures...this will produce a film for me to then insert into my machine, and this right here," he tapped the circular piece of glass, "will magnify the images as it scans through, and this," he tapped the bottom which is what reminded me of a radio, "produces radio of any sound you'd like as you watch your film."

A smile spread across my face, and I chuckled, "holy shit, Tom..." I breathed, "this is going to change the world..." I said softly, and watched his eyes brighten.

"I am so glad you think so, darling!" He said with a smile, and then placed a hand atop the device gently, "I need to test it...which is another reason I called you two here. Would you like to help me with my first test?" He asked, and my eyes widened.

I get to help with the creation of the very first television? Are you joking me? I'm about to pass out.

"Um, yes!" I let out excitedly, looking over at Al.

He had a skeptical look in his eye, although he still held a supportive smile on his face. I tugged his shirt, "c'mon Al, this is big..." I said softly, "you don't wanna miss this chance..."

Looking down at me, he saw the look in my eye and must've realized I know more about this than he does. He nodded.

"Of course we will! It sounds rather intriguing, my friend," he agreed finally, and Tom was beaming.

"Fantastic!" He said, and then Niffty went up to him and started whispering excitedly, taking one of his hands in hers.

I took a moment to observe the device, tilting my head as I took in the sight of what could very well be the only tv in existence at the moment.

The very first.

"What do you call it?" I asked, not even truly meaning to. I was just so curious, and I turned my attention to Tom. He blinked, and cleared his throat.

"Well...they call radios talk boxes, so I was trying to work off of that to make it familiar...perhaps a "video box" but I feel that is too bland...not unique enough," he mumbled slightly, looking over at it in thought.

I would suggest the name "television", but that will come later...he said he wants unique for his first draft? Maybe I can help.

"Have you tried putting them together?" I asked, gaining his attention. Giving Al a side glance, I noticed he looked just as interested as everyone else in what I was about to say.

It's odd being the only one in this room who knows exactly what this device is, and what it will become.

"Pardon?" Tom replied, and I chuckled.

"The words, put them together...you could make a shorter version that will subsequently give you something unique...Vox."

He stared at me silently for a moment, then seemed thoughtful as he tried the name out for himself.

"Vox..." he said, and then hummed before a smile replaced his thoughtful expression.

He met my eyes again, and nodded.

"I like the sound of that."

**

A/N: the television was developed between 1927 and 1928 and the technology was designed by Philo Taylor Farnsworth. He along with John Logie Baird and Charles Francis Jenkins successfully invented the first device that was able to produce moving pictures, or as we know it, the television.

My description of the device is not fictional, and the way it works is by using a rapid succession of stamp sized pictures and scanning them through a large magnifying glass through a fish bowl shaped screen.

It's really incredible, and interesting, look it up for yourself.

(Also, television didn't have sound until 1936. This tv doesn't have sound, but for the sake of my story I tweaked it slightly. It still can't produce sound with the picture, but it can produce a radio broadcast over the picture.)
