Fawn's POV
Can't sleep.
Well...more like, I'm scared to sleep.
Laying on this firm mattress, my eyes had been glued to the opposite wall for about three hours now. My eyelids were heavy, but each time they would blink shut I had to force them open again.
Just so I don't have to relive that nightmare anymore...
Every single night like clock work I watch myself shoot that poor kid in the head. Over and over and over until I'm just begging and screaming for it to end, for this guilt to stop eating me alive.
The only peace I seemed to have is when Alastor offered me his bed, but...I don't know...
Sitting up, I rubbed my eyes with a tired sigh, the loose nightshirt falling off my shoulder just slightly.
I mean...was the offer exclusive to just that one time? He didn't offer tonight...simply told me goodnight before we went our separate ways to our rooms.
It's not like it only benefits me, he also gets a full nights sleep as well...maybe I should just go get in bed with him.
Maybe just maybe he wouldn't mind...
Either that, or I'm going to end up dead as a doornail before the night is over.
Those thoughts aside, I swung my legs over the side of the bed and stood up, tip-toeing across the floor towards my bedroom door.
Opening it, I peeked out as if I were sneaking...which, I kind of am...and then I set my sights on my target.
Alastor's room.
Quietly I walked down the hallway, creeping along the carpet slowly as to not wake him prematurely.
I'm hoping I can simply slip into his bed undetected, then he and I can both get a good nights sleep and that will be the end of it.
My fingers met the cool copper doorknob, and I twisted it, cringing when it squeaked just barely.
Quietly, I slipped into his room, closing the door behind me carefully and slowly.
Alright...now that's out of the way, time for the hard part...
Actually getting into the bed.
The first thing I noticed when I was approaching his bed was that he was laying on the side I normally sleep on.
I was perplexed for a moment before my eyes widened in realization and my cheeks heated up.
Have I been sleeping on his side this entire time and he didn't say anything?
That fact made my heart beat a little bit faster...he did something so small just to make sure I felt comfortable...
Shaking that off, I rounded the bed slowly, looking up every now and then to make sure he was still sound asleep.
If the soft snoring told me anything, I'd say he's still knocked out.
Gently, and carefully, I peeled the covers back. The comforter rustling just slightly made me wince, my eyes immediately darting up to make sure I didn't completely blown my operation.
By sheer dumb luck his eyes were still shut and he hadn't stirred. So, I kept going.
One leg...then the other. Ok, so far so good...
The bed barely made any noise as I climbed in, and I had just begun to shift myself underneath the covers when a bit of movement made me freeze.
My blood ran cold as I snapped my attention to the man next to me. I watched in dismay as his eyes squinted slightly before he opened them and they settled onto me.
For a moment him and I just made tense eye contact, my body rigid from getting caught.
Immediately I wanted to apologize profusely, but he beat me to the talking part.
"Fawn...?" He drawled sleepily, "what're you doin up, darlin...?"
I think my heart might've stopped beating after hearing the way his accent sounded while he was still half asleep. He sounded so raw, so unlike himself, but still exactly the same...
He sounded sexy.
But quickly I pushed those thoughts away, realizing I had a bit of explaining to do.
"I— um...I couldn't s-sleep, and...I was just..." I stumbled over my explanation, my cheeks burning from embarrassment.
His eyes slowly opened wider as he woke up a bit more, and he stared at me a moment before a tiny smile quirked on his lips.
He pushed the covers back slightly, shifting his body to where he was opened up a bit more before he laid his arm out as if inviting me over.
I blinked at the apparent offer, glancing from the spot he had opened before looking back up to his eyes.
As if to reiterate himself, he flexed his fingers in a 'come here' sort of fashion.
Without any more hesitation I crawled over into his arms, welcoming the immediate warmth his body brought me.
He wrapped us both back up in the comforter, his chin resting on my head as he pulled me into his chest again.
His chest rose and fell as he sighed deeply, and I couldn't help but inhale his scent.
Comfort and security washed through me, my muscles relaxing more by the second.
"Do you like sleeping here...?" He asked me, his voice rumbling through his chest and into my head.
I blushed at the question.
Yes.
"I-it just helps, is all...I feel safe..."
He tensed slightly, his muscles flexing before he quickly relaxed and ran his fingers over my arm.
"Good..." he said quietly, "that's how I want you to feel."
My eyes were wide open, my hand laying against his chest. I could feel the rhythm of his heart thrumming against my cheek, our breaths syncing.
"D-do you like me sleeping here...?" I returned his question quietly, wondering if he only tolerates this.
That earned me a soft chuckle as his fingers played mindlessly in my hair, "ma petite chérie, tu es si bête..." he murmured into the top of my head. (My little darling, you're so silly...)
He offered me no other answer...leaving me to interpret his words whichever way I choose.
With the lighthearted way he said it, and the way his hands are running through my hair, I'd say he doesn't mind me being here all too much...
My fingers curled around his shirt and I let my eyes flutter closed, my mind reeling over the success of my mission...or, I guess my mission wasn't really successful, but it ended in a way I'd consider a win.
"Would you mind if we did this more often...?" I asked him in a whisper, almost hoping he didn't even hear me.
But with the way his breath caught and his fingers paused their mindless trailing, I think he heard me just fine.
"I..." he started, trailing off.
"Only if you're ok with it...!" I added quickly, "it just...helps me s-sleep is all..."
Yea...that's all...
I was then surprised when I felt him press against the top of my head, the soft sound of a kiss being placed the only clear indicator of what he did.
My lips parted in mild shock, warmth crawling up my neck.
"If this is where you're comfortable sleeping, I suppose I don't mind..." he said, pulling me closer to him.
With that I remained silent, settling into his chest and replaying that moment over and over in my head.
Although, it wasn't long at all before I let my exhaustion overtake me, my eyes falling shut as I melted into him fully.
**
Morning rolled around much earlier than I wanted it to.
Alastor, of course, was up and getting ready while I laid sprawled out in his bed. The sound of the shower running was all I could register through my hazy mind.
Having to get up so early reminds me of being back in grade school.
A soft noise drifted out of the bathroom, mixing with the sound of the shower. Alastor's voice was carrying a tune unfamiliar to me, but still nice nonetheless.
I was silently humming along with his singing once I'd gotten a feel for the song, all the way until the shower turned off. Even then he kept singing, but it was much clearer now.
He really does have a beautiful voice.
I turned my body on it's side, rolling to face the bathroom door. After a few moments, the door cracked open and he stepped out wearing black slacks and no shirt.
Much to my greedy enjoyment.
His hair was tousled and damp, and I couldn't help but stare at his torso. Each line and muscle fit his physique perfectly, carving a pretty picture for me to shamelessly stare at.
He let out a soft sigh as he used a towel to fluff up his hair and get it a bit more dry. The moment he looked up at me my eyes snapped up to his.
"I see someone has still not peeled herself out of bed," he teased me with a light smirk. I sank further into the covers with a small grunt.
He rolled his eyes, throwing on a red dress shirt.
"So are you coming to work today, or not?" He hummed, fixing his collar in the mirror before grabbing black silk bow tie.
I thought about it for a second. I don't want to stay here all alone, but I also don't want to be stuck at the studio all day either...there's nothing to do there, and it's the same old news and reports.
Plus I hear Alastor rehearsing in his office, so I've basically already heard the broadcasts before they even happen.
Maybe he'd let me wonder around while he worked...I could explore a little bit on my own and get the lay of the land.
"Uh, yea..." I said, drawing out the word as I thought over my proposition. He started tying his bow tie and I watched him curiously.
He did it in the mirror effortlessly, and I blinked at the speed in which he did it.
And it looks perfect, too.
"Really?" He chuckled, turning to me, "you don't sound too sure," he added.
Ignoring his comment for the moment, I held my hands out to him and motioned for him to come closer to me. He did so, tilting his head slightly.
"Yes, sweetie?" He said, and I sat up, getting on my knees so I could scoot closer to the edge of the bed.
I reached up and touched his bow tie, "how do you tie this thing so effortlessly? It looks so hard," I said, causing him to chuckle.
"I wouldn't say it's hard but it does take a bit of skill...would you like me to show you?" He asked, and I looked up at him and nodded, smiling.
"Ok, then, watch closely," he hummed, sitting next to me. I folded my legs beneath myself, laying my hands in my lap as I watched him unravel the perfectly tied bow tie.
He then very slowly walked me through the steps, showing me how to tie it just as he had it before.
After the last step, he pulled it snug and gave me a bright smile.
"And there ya have it! I've been doing this for years upon years, so it's second nature to me..." he said, and I watched in confusion as he reached up and once again unraveled the knot.
"Why'd you...?"
"You try!" He chirped, letting it hang loosely around his neck. I blinked at him before looking back to the bow tie.
I pursed my lips in uncertainty, glancing at him with a raised eyebrow to make sure he really wanted me to. He nodded in encouragement and I shrugged and scooted closer to him.
"Ok..." I whispered softly, taking the fabric up in my hands, "but you can't make fun of me if it sucks," I grumbled.
He snickered, "yes, I can..." he mumbled under his breath, and I shot him a look.
I worked slowly, going through each step just like he said. There were points where I'd have to go back and redo something, but overall I finished it in a pretty timely manner.
Once I'd gotten the last piece placed, I smiled and looked over my handiwork. It was a bit lopsided, and not nearly as perfect as his, but it was pretty damn good for a first try!
"All done?" He chirped, and I looked up into his eyes. I noticed then how close we were, and my breath caught.
"Um..." I stuttered, "yea, all done..." I said, pulling away from him to sit back on my legs. He looked to the mirror that was across the room, checking his reflection.
His smile widened.
"My, darling, you did well! Not as good as me, of course, but you'll be there in no time if you keep up the practice!" He commended my efforts, although his arrogance made me roll my eyes.
I smiled softly as I watched him unravel my hard work and quickly re-tie it once more back into its pristine state.
Then, I remembered his comment about coming to work and bit my lip.
"Hey Al?" I asked softly, fidgeting with my hands in my lap.
He looked at me, and hummed in response.
"I want to come with you today, but would it be alright if I went out into town while you did your broadcasts?"
For a moment he just stared at me. He drew in a deep breath and shook his head, "I don't know...I don't necessarily like the idea of not knowing where you are," he said, unsure.
I rolled my eyes heavily, "Alastor, it's been nearly a month, don't you think if I were going to turn you in I'd have done it by now?" I said, lowering my eyelids in annoyance.
He shook his head again, "not what I'm concerned about, cher..." he replied softly.
My glare lessened and my expression softened. He was no longer looking into my eyes, instead looking off to the side before he sighed again.
"You're a grown woman, you may do as you please..." he said, "but I don't want you to go too far, because if I..." he paused, pursing his lips as he pushed out a rough puff of air through his nose, "...I just wouldn't want anything to happen while I'm not there..."
Slowly I smiled, flattered that he cares so much. Even further I was excited I get to go out on my own!
Before I could stop myself, my arms were around his neck and I drew him into a tight hug.
"Thanks!" I said appreciatively. He was tense for a moment before he laid his hands on my back and pulled me closer.
"Yea, yea..." he mumbled, "just be careful."
I nodded, pulling away from him.
"Yes sir!" I piped playfully, giggling slightly as I slipped off the bed.
Time to get ready for a day on the town—solo style.
