Ch 15
A new artwork approacheth.
Something I love about his redesign is the absolute shark smile she gave him, he just looks like he's up to something.
Fawn's POV
A rough sigh forced past my lips as I fiddled with the open radio. When I woke up this morning, I decided now that things have finally cooled down, I should probably start actually trying to return to my time.
"Stupid...fucking..." I was grumbling angrily as I used these tools to fiddle with the inside of the radio.
Alastor had actually sat me down at the kitchen table, opening the back of the radio for me before he had to go get ready for work. He explained briefly how to use the tools, but took the sharper ones and said he didn't want me to poke myself on accident.
That was about an hour and half ago, and I've made relatively zero progress in my mission to deconstruct this device.
My eye twitched as I stared at the culmination of wires that mocked me from their cozy noise box.
Finally, after a few more frustrating attempts to make something happen with no avail, I growled and slammed the tool I was using down onto the table.
Leaning close to the radio, I narrowed my eyes.
"I will kill you." I seethed at the device, and then my eyes widened when I heard an amused chuckle.
Looking up, I saw Alastor standing in the doorway, fixing his coat.
He had a little grin on his face and cocked his eyebrow at me, taking a few steps closer to peer into my progress...or lack thereof.
"No success yet, darling?" He asked me, his tone mocking my pain.
Shooting him a quick glare, my lips formed into a pout and I let my shoulders slump in defeat.
He hummed, and gathered the tools and the radio, sitting down next to me before he pushed his glasses up on his nose a bit more.
"Let's take a look, hm?" He said, his tone losing its condescending edge. My pout relaxed and I lifted my eyes to him.
"Don't you have to go to work?" I questioned, and he looked at me a moment.
"I do, yes, but I figure I can drive today...it will help save a bit of time," he explained, and I simply shifted my gaze to the radio, watching as he expertly poked around inside.
With ease, he picked it apart and set the pieces neatly to the side.
After he was finished, he swept his hand over it with a big smile.
"Voila!" He expressed happily, and I stared at the radio's skeleton laid out before me.
In all reality, I have no godamn clue how this would even begin to help, but I have to start somewhere. If an electrical device got me here, it only makes sense that one would get me back.
Except...I didn't do anything the first time...it just kind of happened.
Sighing, I pushed the box back towards him and frowned.
Suddenly there was a gentle touch to my back, and Alastor's soft voice cut through my thoughts.
"You'll figure it out, dear..." he reassured me, "eventually...but!" His sudden exclamation made me jump, and I looked over at his widely smiling features.
"How about today you come into work with me, hm?" He suggested, and I tilted my head.
"Why?" I asked him, wondering why he would want me there. He had an unfamiliar glimmer in his eye, and he chuckled.
"Why not? Come on, up, up," he ushered me with pep, making a smile tug at my lips as he got me up out of the kitchen chair.
"Ok, Ok!" I giggled as he nudge me towards the stairs to go get ready.
"Be quick, little Fawn, we must leave in 15 minutes!" He called and I shook my head with a smile on my lips as I closed my bedroom door to get dressed.
**
The scenery passed by leisurely as Alastor drove to work. My chin rested in my palm, my eyes following the trees as they passed.
Eventually, the greenery faded into the city, and the only sound aside from the engine was Alastor's soft humming.
The only thing he's said to me since we left was "you look lovely, dear," when I was worrying about my appearance in the hallway mirror.
Since then we've sat in silence, but it wasn't that tense, uncomfortable silence anymore.
I'm beginning to relax around him just a little bit, seeing as we have had no more misunderstandings or incidents.
"So," I started, breaking the silence. My body shifted to face him, and he sent me a sideways glance before focusing back to the road.
"Yes?" He replied in a hum.
"Why exactly am I coming into work with you?" I asked him again, having not received a real answer the first time. He rolled his shoulders back slightly and sighed.
It wasn't an annoyed or frustrated sigh, more thoughtful.
"I just figured you deserve a chance to get out of the house a little bit...I know you probably feel like you're some sort of prisoner, but I don't want it to feel like that for you...you have freedom to move around and explore, but," he interjected himself, holding a finger up while keeping his hands on the wheel, "I also want to be able to keep an eye on you...for obvious reasons," he added.
I blinked in surprise at his drawn out answer. Really, I wasn't expecting him to care about how I feel about this situation, but he seems to have put a lot of thought into it.
Letting my surprised expression melt into a smile, I lowered my eyelids and nudged his leg. He tensed slightly, and I thought it was cute when his cheeks took on just the slightest bit of color.
"I wanna keep an eye on you, too," I joked with him. He scoffed slightly, shaking his head.
Just then we rolled up to the radio station, the large antenna on the top being very imposing.
Alastor parked in a designated parking space right out front that said "host" in gold paint. At that, I snorted softly and shook my head. He got out of the vehicle and rounded to my side, opening the door for me before I could do it myself.
As usual, he offered me his hand, which I took without a second thought.
"Thank you," I hummed absentmindedly, releasing his hand.
The heels he bought me clicked against the pavement, making me feel...professional? I don't know if that's the right word, but I felt important walking in beside him.
Actually in front of him, because he opened the door for me and motioned me in politely. Giving him a smile, I walked in and looked around.
Man, it's a lot more lively when the workers are here. Soft murmuring was buzzing around as people sat in cubicles.
The rustling of paper could be heard, as well as the clicking of type writers. All I could do was stare in slight awe at all of it.
Then I felt something against my back, and looked up next to me to see Alastor standing there with his wide smile, and his hand gently touching the small of my back.
Upon his entrance, some of the chatter died down, and people looked up. Except, they weren't looking at Alastor.
They were all looking directly at me.
Immediately I shifted my stance, unknowingly moving a bit closer to Alastor out of discomfort. He noticed and waved his hand.
"Continue your work," he commanded, his voice holding a professional and sharp edge to it. The room promptly went back to the way it was before, the workers minding their business at his command.
The tone he used made a fuzzy feeling bloom in my stomach.
I furrowed my brows at the sensation, but didn't have much time to think about it before he nudged me forward.
"Come dear, we can head to my main office where me and some of my closest associates work," he said quietly, and we began to walk.
He pulled a key ring from his pocket, shoving one into the same door he'd come out of the first day we met. I noticed now it had gold cursive branded into the glass that read 'Alastor'.
When he pushed the door open he started humming a soft tune, motioning me in. I stepped through the doorway and into a new room that had a very professional air to it. Upon the door closing, the chatter of the main work area was muffled.
"This office is really nice..." I breathed softly, just taking it in. He chuckled at my awestruck tone, and walked around me to his desk. Picking up a stack of papers, he tidied them and shrugged.
"I like to keep my space as neat and simple as I can," he said casually.
Suddenly, a very short woman with a messy ginger bob bounded over to us, bouncing around Alastor energetically.
"Good-morning boss! Today's reports are on your desk, and your coffee is brewing! I may have already had some, hope you don't mind! I also cleaned up a little bit for you, it was dusty in here, oh! who's that?!" She spotted me and shuffled over quickly.
Her eyes widened, and I noticed one of them seemed to be unfocused and didn't move with her other one.
Does she have a glass eye? That's neat.
"Hi! I'm Niffty!" She introduced, reaching out and grabbing my hand, shaking it quickly before I could return the gesture, "what's your name? Are you knew here?"
Her energy was making me anxious, but I smiled nervously and chuckled, "I'm Fawn, and I'm just a..." I glanced at Alastor and he gave me a pointed look as if to say 'you know what to say'.
"Friend...I'm a friend of Alastor's, just passing through," I said with a smile, and Niffty narrowed her eyes on me for a moment. She rubbed her chin with a soft 'hmm...', making me sweat slightly.
Then she shrugged, "ok!" She chirped, and scurried off.
I let out a breath, and Alastor chuckled. Looking up at him, I made my way over to his desk. He pulled his chair out, sitting down as he watched me approach.
"What do you think, so far?" He asked me with a grin, and I took in a deep breath. Looking around me, I nodded, "you got a nice thing going here..." I hummed thoughtfully.
He looked prideful as he looked around as well, and I wonder if part of the reason he wanted to bring me here was to show off...to impress me.
The thought was silly, and I shook it away, but that look in his eye when I complimented his office was nearly ecstatic.
Suddenly the office door busted open, making me jump and Alastor's eyelids fall halfway, his warm smile turning tight in a split second.
"Alastor!" Came a scratchy male voice. He sounds like he wakes up and smokes a pack of cigarettes for breakfast.
I didn't really have to think about who it was just based off the look that washed across Alastor's once content features. He now looks ready to kill.
"Henry," Alastor replied dryly, though his tone was still professional. Turning around to face the new person, I wasn't really surprised by the near haggard appearance.
The man was large...not tall, but he was large. Between his lips was a lit cigar, and he had a smug smile on his face. He approached us, and immediately his eyes raked me up and down.
He pulled the cigar from his lips and whistled, raising an eyebrow as he looked back to Alastor.
"Now, who is this lovely babe?" He asked Alastor, who simply sat up a bit straighter before answering.
"She is my friend, Fawn, from out of state...she is simply visiting for a bit, and staying at my place. I wanted to show her a bit of the office today," he explained smoothly, and Henry once again eyed me like I was a piece of meat.
"Lucky fucker," the man snickered, "that's one sexy bitch," he commented, and my jaw nearly fell off at the blatant and shameless disrespect.
Alastor's jaw tightened and his smile got even thinner. Henry pointed towards me, eyebrow raised, "you let her leave the house lookin like that? Pants are for men...though, they do look damn good against those gams," he smirked at me and I shuffled closer to Alastor as my cheeks heated out of pure embarrassment.
Alastor simply shot me an apologetic look, then sighed.
"Expressive as ever, I see," he said, his eyelids still lowered in irritation. Henry laughed heartily, and walked over, clapping Alastor on the shoulder.
"Indeed, good man!" He chortled, and even from the few feet he was away from me, I could smell the alcohol and cigar smell wafting off of him.
I nearly gagged at the odor, watching warily as he rounded the desk and headed to a different part of the office. He stole an obvious glance at my ass, making me shift my stance, and then hummed approvingly.
He shot me a wink before turning around and facing forward. Lifting his hand, he said one last thing.
"I expect a top notch report today, Alastor!" He said, then shut the door loudly.
The air felt thick and tense as I stood next to Alastor, my cheeks still red from embarrassment.
Then he sighed, "I'm so sorry...I completely forgot he'd be here today," he mumbled before I heard the shuffling of paper. I simply shrugged it off, and chuckled to try and lighten the mood.
Looking over at Alastor, I nudged him with my elbow, "don't sweat it, I've been called a lot worse than sexy bitch," I quipped, and his eyes widened.
"By who? I'll kill them," was his quick response, making my still warm cheeks rise in temperature once again. Thankfully, the new blush easily blended in with my previous embarrassed blush.
"No one you'll meet in this lifetime, I'm afraid," I said, and he huffed.
"Lucky them," he murmured, and that feeling swam around my stomach again.
Fuzzy...
Almost like...butterflies.
