CHAPTER ONE
"We were sad of getting old, it made us restless."
───
It's early November of the year 1983 in Lawrence Kansas. Mary Winchester a mother of three lowers her youngest son's crib rail so her four year old son and her almost two year old daughter can get a glimpse of the young infant named Sam. Mary watches as her oldest leans in and kisses his baby brother on the forehead. "Night, Sammy!" Dean chimes happily as he and his little sister take a step back. Mary now also leans over, kissing her baby boy. "Goodnight, love" The Blonde said with a heartwarming smile.
Suddenly both Dean and Harper spot there father as he now walks into Sam's nursery. "Daddy!" The green eyed boy exclaims as he and his younger sister run towards there father. John hoists up both Dean and Harper into his arms, one on each side. "So Dean...you think Sammy's ready to toss a football yet?" The dark haired man asks his eldest.
Young Dean shakes his head, "No, daddy" The green eyed boy replied chuckling as his father sets him back down. John still holds onto Harper as he kisses his only daughter on the cheek. "Now it's time to get this little rascal to bed" The Winchester beamed as he slightly tickles the one year old girl.
Mary now walks out of the bedroom, with John following her as he carries Harper, and Dean stands right besides his dad. The dark haired man glances back at the crib as he flips off the light switch, "Sweet dreams, Sam." John and his two other children exit the room as he closes the door but cracks it open a little. Now the four of them all head towards Harper's bedroom which was right across from Dean's. The young girl's bedroom was every little girl's dream, it had light pink wallpaper covering every wall and a fluffy light grey carpet, with a huge toy chest especially personalized for a young Harper. What can I say...she was there only daughter, of course they had to spoil her.
Mary grabs her daughter from John's arms as she goes to place the green eyed little girl in her pearl white crib. John laughs softly as he moves to his wife's side, "How much you wanna bet she won't climb out of her crib tonight?" The Winchester inquires with a smirk.
The blonde scoffs, "Won't?" She retorts. "Don't you remember the last twenty times, she got out" Mary points out.
John shrugs, "She's a little rebel, isn't she?" The dark haired man gushed with satisfaction, as he kissed his daughter on the forehead.
"She gets that from you" Mary mumbles, now rolling up the crib railing. The couple looks down at there one year old daughter as she giggles with a mischievous sloppy grin. "Sweet Dreams, Baby Girl" John and Mary chime in unison. They start to leave Harper's bedroom, right as John turns off the light switch..the room now in complete darkness.
Hours later into the dead of night, a baby's piercing cries come through the baby monitor that's on a wooden nightstand besides there bed. Mary Winchester groans awake and looks over to the left side of her bed, John isn't there but baby Sam's cries grow even more louder than before as they come from the white monitor. Mary yawns as she slides outta bed as she makes her way towards the hallway to check on her infant son.
The blonde woman now shuffles down the hallway, towards Sam's Nursery. Mary opens the nursery door as she peers in, it's utterly pitched black inside but she sees a figure standing over the baby's crib which she assumes it's her husband John. "Honey, is he hungry?" Mary questions as she crosses her arms.
"Shhh."
Mary shrugs nonchalantly as she now turns away, "Okay sorry" She mumbled, now leaving the baby's bedroom. But when the blonde reaches her bedroom door, Mary stops as she notices at the other end of the hall... there's a dancing, ghostly light coming from downstairs. Her brow furrows in utter confusion, "What the hell?" Mary muttered to herself. She moves toward the shimmering glow with caution but when she's at the stairs now, her bare feet padding down the steps. Until finally, Mary reaches the bottom to see an sleeping John laid back in his recliner.
"Oh my god." Mary quickly turns around, as she bolts to the wooden steps. The woman bursts into the nursery. Mary steps forward and whatever she sees, it causes her color to drain. Her breath starts coming in short, panicked hurts and on her face there's a glimmer of recognition.
Then suddenly coming from upstairs Mary's terrible ragged scream causes John to lunge out of his chair. The dark haired man storms into the nursery but as John looks around there's no sign of his wife. John moves closer to the crib as he check's on the infant, "Hey, Sammy" John says to his cooing baby as he leans in. But suddenly something strange catches john's eyes. The father reaches over as he sees a dime of crimson red appear on the crib's mattress. A look of utter confusion crosses John's face as more drops fall onto his hand, strangely coming from above.
John looks up at the ceiling, his face twists into equal parts of anguish and terror as he staggers back onto the floor. "Mary!" The Dark haired man shouts as he sees his wife on the ceiling, impossibly splayed out as if it were the floor with her eyes wide open, and glassy. Suddenly fire radiates from her body and across the ceiling like ripples in a pound. The fire starts cascading down the walls, it's now everywhere. John now covers his eyes from the bright fire as he quickly snatches his infant son out of the crib and rushes out towards the hallway.
"Daddy?" Dean calls out, in worry. John runs into the hallway as he finds Dean and Harper, the two of them emerging from there rooms utterly unaware of what had just happened to there mother. John places the baby in a frightened Dean's arms, "Take your Brother and Sister outside as fast as you can! Don't look back! Now, Dean, Go!" He shouted. A Young Dean grabbed Harper by the hand as he held Sam up with the other. The Young Winchester children follow there father's instructions as they run down the stairs and burst out the front door, now reaching the front yard of there home. A four year old Dean turns to his younger siblings, "It's okay Har, and Sam" He reassures them, now looking up at Sam's bedroom window from outside. Suddenly John sprints out the front door as he scoops them all up, running away from the burning house as the fire explodes even more.
As some time passes through firetrucks and ambulances now surround the Winchester home as they try to put out the stubborn flames. John Winchester and his three children watch from afar as he comforts the stunned children, leaning against his car a vintage 1965 black Chevy impala. John watches his family's home burn and with the fire illuminating his expression, now reflecting in his eyes. The man's jaw now sets in pain and fury.
───
A twenty-three year old Harper Winchester slips what's left of her costume as she walks right back out with a charming smile. It had been nearly twenty two years since her mother's death and five years since she'd seen her father and brothers. Since then the brunette had been living in Sacramento California which her longtime boyfriend Nikolas Blackwell. The young couple had started out as great friends which eventually evolved into more. And since then they were just meant to be...there connection was just immaculate. Of course Harper was known to have a wild party girl personality but with the Blackwell, he made everything make sense again. His presence always made the young Winchester feel safe and not alone in a such disappointing world.
"What do you think?" Harper asks as she shows off her very revealing costume to her boyfriend, who sat at the end of the bed.
Nikolas chuckles, "Little red riding hood..great idea but I thought you said you hated Halloween?" The blue eyed young man asked, curiously.
Harper nods, "I do but I have to wear it for work, tonight" She explained, with a shrug. Nikolas Blackwell slowly nods in understanding as he stands up, now stepping closer to the young winchester as he wrapped his arms around Harper. The blue eyed boy was completely hypnotized by Harper and her beauty. He loved everything about Harper Winchester, starting with her alluring bright green eyes and ending with her stunning smile. Nikolas truly believed since the first time he ever saw her that it was love at first sight. And nothing would ever change his mind.
Nikolas sighed as he looked into the spark that was in Harper's eyes, "I love you..you know that" He tells Harper.
The brunette raises a brow, "You okay?" She inquires.
The Blackwell slowly nods as he sends his girlfriend a charming smile. "I just thought you needed to know that" Nikolas expresses as his bright blue eyes met Harper's green ones. Harper smiled, now putting her arms on Nik's shoulders. It's an sincere and loving intimate moment between the two. "Well, then..I love you too Nik Blackwell" Harper chimes with a soft chuckle.
"What would I ever do without you."
Harper Winchester slightly tilts her hand as she grins, "Probably crash and burn" The brunette taunted in a playful manner now leaning in as she gives Nikolas a soft but romantic kiss.
───
Hours later as it's now nearly twelve in the morning a busy Harper carries orders of drinks to tables, one by one in her little red riding hood costume. Ever since she had ran away from home and her family, Harper needed to earn money so she could start building a life for herself away from her father's dreaded life choices. And so The Winchester wounded up all the way In Sacramento working as a waitress in one of it's upscale bars in the city. The job sorta paid well but it was enough to get Harper by with her new life.
The Young Winchester walks back over to the bartender as she goes to grab another couple of drinks. But the bartender stops the brunette right in her tracks, "I got these Harper, go take that gentleman's order" The blonde woman tells her, now pointing over towards one of the booths in the far back. Harper nods as she now turns around making her way down the aisle towards the gentleman.
When the brunette finally reaches the booth, Harper quickly pulls out her black server book and pen from her apron. "Welcome to thunderbolt bar, what can I get you?" Harper questions her newest customer. The man looks back up from the surprisingly large menu, now revealing his true identity with a sly smirk. Recognition dawned onto Harper's face as she was now face to face with her eldest brother...Dean.
"What's the matter, little sis? Cat got your tongue?" Dean says smirking.
Harper's expression hardened as she glared at the green eyed young man. The brunette examined her brother, as she compared the way he looked now to how she remembered him from five years ago. Dean's face was more angular this time, he and Harper still shared the same shade of green eyes. Her older brother's dark blonde hair was more shorter and spiker than before and Dean still wore his signature brown leather jacket that once belonged to there father. "What are you doing here?" The brunette falters. "Or let me rephrase it...how the hell did you even find me?" Harper blurted out, with a glare as she puts her server book away now sliding into the booth.
Dean shrugged, "What can I say, I'm a genius" The Elder Winchester boasted. "What's up with the costume?"
"It's Halloween Dumbass." Harper sighed heavily as she rubbed her temples looking over at her brother who sat across from her, "What do you want Dean?" The Young Winchester asked.
"We need to talk."
Harper raises a brow, "Can it wait..I'm working" She reminded Dean.
The Elder Winchester scoffs, "Well it can't...it's the matter of life and death" Dean explained.
Harper's mouth set in a hard line as she glared at her older brother. "Look whatever it is that you want to drag me in...forget it, I'm not one of dad's little soldiers anymore" The Winchester snapped, as she abruptly got up from the booth.
"Sit back down" Dean grumbled utterly annoyed, with his sister.
Harper scoffed as she looked at him with a sharp but cold glare, "You don't get to tell me what to do anymore" The brunette hissed as she now walks off.
Nearly two hours later in the dead of night Harper steps out of her apartment building's elevator as she arrives on the third floor. The brunette walks down the hallway as she finally reaches her apartment door labeled 3D. Harper unlocks it with her key and walks right in, closing the door right behind her. The Young Winchester sets her bag on a hook in the small foyer but she as she does this, Harper notices a strange detail about her surroundings. The lights were on and they were never on the other nights she came home late from work.
Harper's brow furrowed with utter confusion, "Hey Nik? Why are you up at this hour..don't you have a exam in the morning? " The green eyed girl blurted out, making her way towards her boyfriend's voice.
"I'm in here, Babe." Harper stepped into there open kitchen and the brunette looks over at the kitchen's island, where the Blackwell stood as he was still in his pajamas holding his coffee mug in his hand.
Harper raised a brow, "Coffee at this hour?" She inquires with a giggle. Nikolas sets down his mug on the counter as he steps forward over to Harper, the couple now facing each other. The blue eyed man softly rubs the woman's arm as concern crosses her face. Nikolas shrugged, "Well it wouldn't be hospitable of me to not offer our guest something to drink" He tells the long haired brunette.
"Guest?" Harper asks, lowly.
"Thanks for letting me use your bathroom." Harper turns around as her green eyes land on her eldest brother Dean. The Elder Winchester walks over to Harper and Nikolas with his signature cocky grin.
Harper glances over at the blue eyed man, "Why did you let him in?" She huffed.
Nikolas shrugged, "He's your brother Harper, you always tell me how much you miss him" The Blackwell reasons.
Dean's eyes lit up as he turned to Harper, "Aww..I missed you too Har" The Elder Winchester chimed sarcastically, as he goes to hug his little sister. But after a minute Harper pulls away from him as she stares at Dean dead in the eye. "Nikolas, will you excuse us. Me and my dear old brother Dean here are gonna catch up on old times" Harper muttered.
Minutes later the two Winchesters step onto the balcony as Harper shuts the sliding glass door behind them. Harper looks back over to him, "What the hell do you want, Dean?" The brunette asks, now clearly pissed off.
Dean glances around his surroundings then back to Harper, "Wow..life's certainly treating you well" He beams with surprise. "You got a rich boyfriend..soon to be doctor and now you're living in a huge penthouse" The green eyed man exclaimed with a soft nod.
"Dean..just get to the point."
He purses his lips, "Dad went on a hunting trip and he's now missing" Dean tells her, with a low frown. Harper's face went pale white as she knew what those exact words really meant and the trouble that followed with it. The brunette sighed with despair, "How long?" Harper inquires.
Dean shrugs, "It's been a few days now" He explains.
Harper fiddled with her necklace as her eyes met dean's. "He's been missing before, Dean. We both know from experience that dad usually turns up by the end of the week" The female winchester reasoned, as she places her hand on her brother's shoulder.
Dean shook his head, "But it hasn't been for this long..Har." He sighs as he looks to his little sister, memories of there childhood lingering in the man's mind. Harper was Dean's best friend probably his only friend since they didn't have much friends growing up but she was the only one except from Sam who knew how it really felt when there father went missing. The worry and utter fear of losing another parent struck there minds even as young children. The same fear that they felt now.
"I'll meet you outside in 20."
───
Now changed into proper clothing Harper grabbed her black duffel bag as she throws it on top of her bed. The brunette walks back and forth between her bedroom and closet as she places her clothes into the duffel bag. Nikolas who leans against the bedroom wall raises a brow with confusion, "So how long are you planning to be away for?" The Blackwell questions. Harper stops as she looks back up at her bewildered boyfriend, deep down Harper knew she couldn't tell him what was actually going on with her dad. The brunette knew the Blackwell wouldn't be able to handle the truth of what actually lurked in the shadows at night.
Harper shrugged, "It's for a couple of days..my dad's really sick and I think it's for the best that I go nurse him back to health" She chimes, with slight reassurance. Nikolas slowly nodded as he stepped forward, "Tell your dad that I hope he gets better and that I hope to finally meet him one day" The Blackwell tells the Young Winchester.
Harper finally zips up her duffel bag and turns to Nik, "I'll call you everyday" the green eyed girl says softly.
"You better" Nikolas says smiling. The young Blackwell walks over to his girlfriend as Harper kisses him. They slowly pull away from each other as the brunette slides her bag over her shoulder. One last time the brunette looks back to Nikolas, "Love you" Harper chimes as she leaves there bedroom. "Love you too" Nikolas shouts back, as he slowly watches his girlfriend disappear from his view.
Minutes later Harper is now outside as she walks up to Dean as he's leaning against his car. Harper's eyes widened with surprise as she caught a glimpse of the antique car. "Wow..it looks the exact same as it did when we were kids" Harper exclaimed as she went to touch the majestic impala.
Dean speaks up, "Okay we're gonna have one more stop while we're on the road" He tells his sister.
Harper nodded, "Sure..where are we exactly going?" She questions.
"Stanford."
The Young Winchester let out a giggle, "To pick up Sam?" Harper inquired. "Do you even know where he lives, Dean?" She pointed out with a tired yawn.
Dean pauses at his sister's question but he then shakes his head, "No...but it won't be that hard to find him" The elder winchester reasons with his charming smile.
Harper crosses her arms, "Well it's a good thing that I have his address or we'd be wasting a two hour drive for nothing" Harper retorts as she unlocks the passenger door now sliding into the black impala.
───
Sam Winchester emerges from his bedroom, and into the hall. He's got a clear view into the main room and he can see that a window has been opened with it's drapes flowing with the wind almost ghostly. The young winchester looks around the dark room as he starts to hear creaking coming from his kitchen but then suddenly there's two shadows that pass by catching the boy's attention. The door then creaks open as a figure walks right into the main room, Sam quickly jumps out and tackles the unknown figure. But surprisingly the figure from the kitchen dodges Sam's attack just as expertly. With lightning fast reflexes, the unknown figure tosses Sam to the side as they dodge his every swing the college boy throws at him. Then suddenly the figure sweeps Sam's legs out from under him causing the youngest Winchester to fall onto the floor.
"Whoa, Easy, Tiger" Dean exclaimed as he pins his younger brother to the ground.
Sam's face went black as he looked up at his eldest brother, "Dean?" He blurts out. "You scared the crap out of me."
Dean chuckles as he tilts his head slightly, "That's cause you're out of practice" The elder Winchester stated with a smirk. But with a swift and precise maneuver Sam slips out from beneath Dean, Now slamming his older brother onto the hard floor.
"Or not" Dean says chuckling. "Get off of me" He says with a huff. Sam now releases his older brother as he helps dean to his feet.
"Dean, what the hell are you doing here?" Sam asks.
"That's the exact same thing I said" Harper blurted out, leaning against one of Sam's bookshelves.
The Young Winchester's jaw dropped in utter surprise as his eyes glimmered by his sister's presence. It had been nearly five years since Sam saw Harper in person other than just hearing her on the phone. Without any hesitation the hazel eyed boy rushes over towards his older sister as he warmly embraces her. Harper smiled softly as she slowly pulled away from her little brother and looked up at his face. "You won't just stop growing, won't you" The brunette said with a giggle.
Sam grins, "God..I missed you so much, how's Nikolas doing?" The brown haired boy asks with his charming smile.
Harper's mouth curved into a bright smile, "I missed you too Sammy, and Nik's doing great..he's about to graduate pretty soon" She tells her younger brother.
Dean looks over at his two younger siblings with a sharp glare, "Oh..so you two have been in touch all this time?" The dark blonde hissed as he pointed towards Sam and Harper. "But when it's me..I'm told to get lost."
Harper turns to her elder brother, "What do you expect..Sam can actually keep a secret" The brunette shrugged nonchalantly.
"Sam?"
The light flips on and Jessica appears on the other side of the room, with her Smurf T-shirt and long bare-legs. The three Winchesters all turn to look over at the blonde girl as confusion crosses her features. "Jess, hey" The Hazel eyed boy greets his utterly confused girlfriend.
Sam then turns back to his brother and sister, "Dean, Harper, this is my girlfriend, Jessica" He tells his siblings. Jessica steps forward as she peers intently at the two, "Wait, Your Brother Dean? And your sister Harper?" The Moore says with a heartwarming smile.
Dean grins mischievously as he looks at her up and down, "I love the Smurfs" He blurted out, pointing over to the girl's shirt. "You know, I got to tell you, you are completely out of my brother's league" Dean tells her as he steps closer towards the beautiful blonde.
Jessica smiles, "Let me put something on" She mumbles.
The dark blonde young man shakes his head, "No, No. I wouldn't dream of it, seriously" Dean says with a heavy sigh, looking over at his brother's girlfriend.
Harper steps forward as she let out a annoyed sigh, "You'll have to forgive my brother..he's an ass" The brunette says with her signature wicked smirk. Jessica looks over at the stunning girl, "It's great to finally meet you, Sam has told me so much about you."
Dean speaks up, "Anyways, We gotta borrow your boyfriend here, talk about some private family business, but nice meeting you" He exclaimed.
"No" Sam announces. The brown haired boy steps back over towards his girlfriend as he puts his arm around her. "Whatever you want to say, you can say it in front of her" Sam exhorted in a prideful tone.
Both Dean and Harper glance at each other for a moment as he goes to speak again, looking over at the couple. "Okay..um, dad hasn't been home in a few days" Dean tells his younger brother.
Sam sighed, "So he's working overtime on a "Miller Time" Shift. He'll stumble back in sooner or later" The young winchester reasons.
Harper swallowed thickly as she looks over at her little brother, "He actually went on a hunting trip, Sammy" The brunette clarifies with a saddened expression. Sam pauses as his face went pale white as he too knows what those exact words really meant and the trouble that followed with it.
"Jess, excuse us."
───
Now the three siblings walk out of Sam's apartment as they walk down the wooden staircase. "Come one, you guys can't just break in the middle of the night and expect me to hit the road with you two" Sam reprimands his two older siblings. Dean sighs with frustration, "You're not hearing me Sammy. Dad's missing and I need you to help me find him" He tells the brown haired boy.
Harper scoffs as she follows her brothers down the stairs, "Gee why does this sound so familiar?" The green eyed girl retorted.
The Young Winchester sighed, "Don't you guys remember the poltergeist in Amherst, or the devil's cave in Clifton?" Sam pointed out as he continues following his siblings down the flight of stairs.
"That's what I told him."
Dean rolls his eyes, "You're not helping..Har" The green eyed man mutters.
Sam continues but this time his voice changes, sounding as if he's almost annoyed by his father's actions. "He's always missing and he's always fine" The college boy says harshly, the three of them finally reaching the bottom. Harper frowns at her younger brother's response, Sam wasn't wrong though this was always there father's pattern growing up. He'd leave for days and then show up back home as if he'd been there the whole time.
Dean shakes his head, "Not for this long" he added. "Now, are you gonna come with us or not?" The elder Winchester inquired.
"I'm not" Sam muttered.
Dean raises a brow, "Why not?"
Sam sighed heavily, "I swore I was done hunting for good" He proclaims.
"Come on, it wasn't easy but it wasn't that bad" Dean reasons with a scoff, now walking over to the entrance with Harper and Sam following there older brother from behind.
"Yeah?" Sam scoffs with disappointment. "When I told dad I was scared of the thing in my closet, he gave me a .45" He tells Dean as he walks besides his sister.
Dean's brow furrows, "What was he supposed to do?" The green eyed man questioned.
Harper speaks up, "Maybe be a actual parent for once...you know like how they do it on those disney channel shows" The brunette says sarcastically as she sends both of her brothers a side eye, trying to break the tension between them all.
"Or maybe tell me to not be afraid of the dark?" Sam suggests with a frown.
Dean's expression hardened, "Are you kidding me? Of course you should be afraid of the dark! You know what's out there" He reprimanded his younger brother.
Sam slowly nodded, "Yeah but still--the way we all grew up after mom was killed and dad's obsession to find the thing that killed her, but we still haven't found the damn thing."
Harper looks over at Dean who's jaw is now clenched with displeasure. The Female Winchester shrugs, "Sammy does got a point there" She mumbles but dean quickly sends her a sharp glare.
"So we kill everything we can find."
"Save a lot of period doing it, too" Dean reasons.
Harper steps in between her brothers as she scoffs, "Do you think mom would have wanted this life for us?" The brunette girl questions as she glared at her older brother Dean. But he just storms through the door but Sam and Harper just follow dean outside onto the street.
Harper continues, "We were practically raised to be killers, Dean." She continues, "Don't you remember all the combat and weapon training?"
The elder Winchester continues walking down the sidewalk as he rolls his eyes, "Your not really doing that great of a job convincing him, Har" Dean deadpans with a annoyed expression.
"It's the truth, Dean" Sam points out.
Deans stops walking as he turns around now facing his younger siblings. "So, what are you two gonna do? Are you both gonna live some normal, apple pie life?" Harper has the look on her face as if she's about to say something but the brunette just stays quiet. The green eyed man frowned, Is that it?" He snapped at the two.
Sam shook his head, "No, not normal but Safe."
Dean glances between his two siblings, "And that's why the both of you ran away" He said with a scoff.
"I was just going to college" Sam replied. "It was Dad who said if I was gonna go, I should stay gone and...that's what I'm doing."
Dean then turns to his sister, "But you..you just ran away for the kicks, didn't you?"
Harper steps menacingly over to Dean and there's a moment of silence between the two then suddenly Harper slaps him right across the face. "I'm sorry that you weren't smart enough to run away from the man who suffocated us at every moment he got" Harper hissed angrily, Sam softly grabs his sister as he pulls her back.
Dean looks back up, his eyes now shimmering. "Dad's in real trouble right now. If he's not dead already" He explained harshly. Both Harper and Sam share saddened looks as they listen to there older brother.
"I can't do this alone...I need you guys with me" Dean pleaded.
Sam spoke up, "Yes you can" He replied lowly.
The green eyed man sighed, "Well..I don't want to" He tells them, sadly. Both Sam and Harper look at each other, "What was he hunting?" They ask in unison, both of the younger siblings feeling guilty.
Moments later Dean pops open the impala's expansive trunk. Harper looks down at the trunk for a moment it looks normal maybe a little worn out until Dean flips up the false bottom, revealing many arsenal weapons. There were exotic shotguns, Knives, Crucifixes, greasy chainsaws, and Crossbows that are loaded with thin wooden stakes as well. "All right, let's see" Dean huffs as he searches through the trunk. "Where the hell did I put that thing?" He murmured.
Harper leans against the side of the trunk, as she looked back up at her younger brother. "So when dad left, why didn't you go with him?" Sam questions Dean.
"I was working my own gig..this voodoo thing down in New Orleans" The Dark Blonde Winchester explained.
Harper chuckles as she turns back to Dean, "Dad really let you go on a hunting trip all by yourself?" The brunette retorted with amusement.
Dean slowly looks back up, "I'm 26, Dude." The elder winchester finally comes up with a pile of papers as he hands them to Sam and Harper. "So dad was checking out this two-lane blacktop just outside of Jericho, California" Dean explained with a heavy sigh. "About a month ago, this guy vanished but they found his car..completely M.I.A."
Sam looks down at the article as he shrugs, "So maybe he was kidnapped" The brown haired boy suggested.
Dean begins laying more sheets in Sam and Harper's hands, "Another one in April, Another one in December '04, '03, '98, '92" The green eyed man reads, as he looks back up. "10 of them over the past twenty years, all men, all same five mile stretch of road" He shares. Now Sam and Harper are even more interested as they watch as Dean spreads out a California road map. "Started happening more and more, so Dad went to go dig around. That was about three weeks ago." Dean looks over to his two younger siblings, "I hadn't heard from him since, which is bad enough" He says with a huff.
Dean holds up a small digital recorder, "And then I get this voicemail yesterday." Harper leans in as she goes to listen in, it's her father's voice but it sounds obscured by pops and crackles. "Dean...something is starting to happen...I think it's serious, I need to try to figure out what's going...be very careful, Dean. We're all in danger." Harper narrows her eyes at dean as the message goes static. "You do realize there's E.V.P. on this?" Sam blurted out with suspicion.
Dean smirks, "Not bad Sammy. Kind of like riding a bike, isn't it?" Dean sighed as he clicks the digital recorder again, "I slowed the message down, ran it through a goldwave, took out the hiss. Here's what I got." Harper hears John's voice again very slowly this time but now there's something else in the background it's another voice..another presence. Harper and her brothers start to hear a rapid, but ghostly female whisper. "Never...go home" The voice utters out faintly but also fearfully. Harper nervously fiddled with her necklace as she listened to the woman's spine-tingling voice, the brunette fretted at the realization of her father actually being in grave danger.
The green eyed girl frowned, "Never go home" Harper repeated. She looks over at her eldest brother as he sends her the "I told you so" look. Dean then puts the recorder away as he slams the impala's trunk shut, now turning back to the younger winchesters. "You know, in almost five years, I've never bothered you, Harper. And I've never asked you for a thing...Same goes for you Sammy."
Harper sighed heavily, "All right, I'll go" She tells him. Both Dean and Harper now look over at Sam who goes to speak. "I'll go too, I'll help you guys find him but I have to get back first thing Monday" Sam comments, as he starts to turn around towards his apartment. "Just wait here, I'll be back" He tells his older siblings.
The brunette's brow furrowed, "What's first thing Monday?" Harper asks, as she steps forward.
Sam stops as he looks over at his brother and Sister, "I have an interview" The youngest winchester shared.
Dean scoffed, "What a job interview? Just skip it" he blurts out.
The hazel eyed boy shook his head, "It's an law-school interview, and it's my whole future on a plate" Sam explained, harshly.
Dean's face scrunches up, "Law school?" The elder winchester hummed.
Harper crosses her arms as she glared at the dark blonde young man, "Cut it out Dean..do you want Sam's help or not" She muttered, utterly annoyed by her brother's antics.
───
It was now morning and Dean pulls into a rest stop as he now parks the impala right in front of the establishment. Harper Winchester yawns tiredly as she opens the car door, now stepping outside. Before heading inside the green eyed girl walks over to the Sam who's sitting at the passenger's side rummaging through Dean's collection of cassette tapes. "Do you want anything from inside?" Harper questions, with a smile.
Sam shrugs, "I'm fine but thanks" He replies. Harper nods slowly in response as she starts walking away from her younger brother.
Now the green eyed girl heads right into the store which was fairly large for being in the middle of nowhere. Harper enters one of the aisles as she looks around. There wasn't that much to buy that was suitable enough for breakfast, so the Winchester just grabs a couple of granola bars, gum, and a bottle of water. Harper then makes her way over to the front of the store as she meets Dean by the cash register.
The green eyed girl places her items on-top of the counter as the clerk goes to check them out. Harper's eyes then land on her brother's items, "That's what you call breakfast?" She retorts with a snort.
Dean smirks, "Yeah..so what if it's potato chips it's still coming out from the same hole" He snickered with a goofy grin.
Meanwhile outside the passenger door is open, and Sam sits there with his feet on the ground. He looks over his shoulder as he hears the store's door chime. It's Harper and Dean walking out now carrying bags of essentials for the road. Harper opens the back door as she slides back into the backseat and Dean goes to the side of the car to fill up the impala's tank. The Elder winchester holds up a Mountain Dew and a bag of Doritos from the brown bag, "Hey, you want breakfast?" The green eyed man asks.
"Um..no thanks." From the backseat Harper pulls out a granola bar from her bag and hands it to her younger brother, "Here you go, Sammy" The brunette chimes.
Sam smiles at his sister, "Thanks Harper" He tells the girl. The brown haired boy then looks back over at Dean, "So how'd you guys pay for that stuff?" Sam questions suspiciously.
Harper sits up by the car's console, "He and Dad are still running those credit card scams" The brunette added with a smirk.
"Yeah, well Hunting ain't exactly a pro-ball career" Dean pointed out as he puts the gasoline handle back. "Besides all we do is apply. It's not our fault they send us the cards" The Winchester explained.
Sam chuckles, "Yeah and what names did you write on the application this time?" He asks.
Harper Winchester sighed, "Huh...let's see shall we?" The brunette exclaims as she pulls out dean's wallet. "Apparently Bert Aframian and his son Hector payed for our snacks and gasoline on this very lovely day" The brunette taunted as she holds up the credit card in the air. Sam chuckles in amusement as he watches his older sister go through Dean's wallet.
The green eyed man then gets back into car as he turns to his two younger siblings. "Hey! Give me that" Dean hissed as he snatches his wallet back from Harper's grasp.
The green eyed girl grins, "Ever heard of the word please before?" Harper retorts with an annoyed expression.
Dean raises a brow, "How the hell did you even get it?" He asks.
Harper gave a half-shrug, "How'd you think i survived my first year on my own?" She hinted, with a sly smirk.
Sam sighed as he hit his head against the headrest, "Sounds about right, I'm gonna be stuck in a car with a Scammer and a Pickpocketer" He grumbles.
Harper rolls her eyes, "It could be worse, Sammy" She muttered out. "But let's talk about Dean's poor taste in music" Harper chimes, now looking over at his cassette tape collection.
Dean looks over at his sister, "Why? What's wrong with them?" He asks.
Harper narrows her eyes as she slightly tilts her head, "Well for starters who still owns cassette tapes?" She ponders.
The Brown haired boy adds, "Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Metallica?" Sam says as he reads the labels out loud. "It's the greatest hits of mullet rock." Dean snatches the Metallica tape out of Sam's hand as he looked back up at his brother with a glare. "House rules, Sammy and Har. Driver picks the music, Shotgun shuts his cakehole" Dean exclaims as he places the tape into the player.
"Sammy is a chubby 12 year old, it's Sam, Okay?" The youngest winchester corrects his older siblings with a annoyed expression. Dean then turns on the car's ignition and the engine roars to life, music now blaring loud. "Sorry, I can't hear you. The music's too loud" Dean mocks as he raises his brows and drives off now thundering down the road. Harper smiled with happiness...she wouldn't admit it but deep down the girl enjoyed being with her brothers again. It brought her a sense of familiarity...It was just the three of them again. Dean, Harper, and Sam..the chaotic trio.
───
A couple of hours go by and the impala speeds down centennial highway as they pass the Jericho 7 sign. Still seated in the backseat Harper chews on her granola bar as she listens in on Sam's phone call. Then he hangs up as he looks back up from his cellphone, "All right, so there's no one matching dad at the hospital or morgue. So that's something, I guess" Sam tells them with reassurance.
The brunette shrugs, "At least we aren't fully orphans" Harper says with positive smile. But both of her brothers send her disapproving looks. "Sorry that wasn't helpful" Harper replied with a sigh.
Dean keeps driving but suddenly he spot's something from up ahead, "Check it out" The green eyed man informs his siblings. Harper and Sam look through the windshield as they spot three parked squad cars by the bridge. Dean parks the impala to the side as he turns off the ignition. Harper now watches as Dean opens up the glovebox, pulling out a wooden box. The elder winchester opens up the box to reveal a bunch of fake government badges and ids with his face plastered all over them.
Dean smirks at a shocked Sam who is utterly stunned. "Let's go" The green eyed man quipped as he gets out of the car. Sam sighs heavily as he also watches his sister nonchalantly hop right out of the impala and follow Dean.
Several deputies surround Troy Squire's Toyota, Deputy Jaffe looks over the bridge as his two other officers search the stream. "Did you guys find anything?" He shouts out from the top of the bridge. The officers shake there heads, "No! Nothing!" They shout back from the bottom of the stream. The deputy turns back as he walks towards the blue car. Deputy Hein looks over to Deputy Jaffe from inside the vehicle, "No sign of struggle, No footprints, No fingerprints. Spotless, it's almost too clean." The three Winchesters slowly approach the scene but none of the officers have taken any awareness that they are listening in on their conversation.
"So this kid Troy, He's dating your daughter, isn't he?" Deputy Jaffe asks.
"Yeah" Hein replies.
"How's Amy doing?" Jaffe questions, with a frown.
Deputy Hein sighs, "She's been putting up missing posters downtown" He shares.
"You fellas had another one like this just last month didn't you?" Dean blurted out, causing the two deputies to turn there heads in there direction.
Deputy Jaffe raises a brow as his eyes land on the three siblings. "And who are you?" He asks, now stepping forward.
The Elder Winchester with all smiles and confidence approaches the deputy as Harper and Sam follow. "Federal Marshals" Dean says as he holds up his badge momentarily.
Jaffe narrowed his eyes with suspicion, "You three are a little young for Marshals, Aren't you?" The deputy inquires.
Dean snorted with amusement, "Thanks that's awfully kind of you" He beamed now walking towards the blue toyota. "You did have another one just like this, Correct?" Dean questioned as he looks back over at the deputy.
Deputy Jaffe nods, "Yeah that's right. About a mile up the road. There have been others just like this" He tells them.
Harper speaks up, "So the victim..did you know him?" She asks, now looking over at the man.
"A town like this, everybody knows everybody."
They all look over at Dean who's now doing his own inspection of the crime scene. "Any connection between the victims besides that they're all men?" The green eyed man asks as he walks around.
The Deputy shakes his head, "No, not so far as we can tell."
Sam raises a brow, "So what's the theory?" He asks, now stepping closer to the car.
Deputy Jaffe shrugged, "Honestly, we don't know. Serial murder, kidnapping ring" He suggested.
Harper slowly nods as she makes her way back to her brothers. Dean continues, "Well that is exactly the kind of crack police work I'd expect out of you guys" He deadpanned. Sam steps forward obviously jamming his foot down over Dean's, judging from the older brother's sudden painful wince.
Harper looks over to the deputy, "Thank you for your time" She says smiling. Now heading back over to the impala, Dean slaps Sam's neck.
"Ow!" Sam winces as he looks back to Dean. "What was that for?" He asks quietly.
The green eyed man keeps walking, "Why did you have to step on my foot?" Dean growled.
The brown haired boy loomed closer towards Dean, "Why do you have to talk to police like that?" Sam reprimanded. The Green eyed girl's expression hardened as she glared at the two boys, "Don't me make kick both your asses..especially you Dean" Harper spat with her arms crossed.
"Come on" Dean says utterly annoyed. "They don't really know what's going on and we're alone on this" The blonde young man acknowledges as he stops to face his brother and sister. "If we're gonna find Dad, we've got to get to the bottom of this thing ourselves" Dean demands.
Just then Sheriff Pierce appears right behind them as the old man clears his throat. Dean then turns around to face three new officers on the bridge, all staring at the three siblings. "Can I help you folks?" The Sheriff questioned the three Winchesters eyeing them suspiciously.
"No, Sir." Dean replies, "We were just leaving. Agent Mulder, Agent Scully." He nods at the two FBI agents. Harper and her brothers quickly make there way back over to the parked impala as they start to leave the premise.
───
After talking to Troy's girlfriend Amy the three siblings were now at the public library, beginning there search. Harper sat behind Dean as she looked over his shoulder at the bright computer display. The brunette sighed heavily as she rested her chin on her palm, now looking between her two brothers. "I have an idea, how about you let us try" Harper chirped, sending Dean an annoyed expression.
"Yeah let us, try" Sam chimes as he reaches for the keyboard, but Dean slaps his hand away. "I got it" The green eyed man deadpans, harshly.
Harper then physically wheels Dean's chair out of the way with her moveable chair as she takes his place at the desk. "You guys are such control freaks" Dean groans as he softly hits his sister on the back.
The brunette faked a smile as she momentarily glances over at Dean, "Yeah..living with dad did us all wonders" Harper says sarcastically.
Sam speaks up, "So angry spirits are born out of violent death, right?" He questions.
"Yeah."
Harper slowly nods in understanding as she starts to type at the keyboard, "So it's probably not murder then" She suggested. Harper highlights the word murder and changes it to suicide. Suddenly when the winchester hits search, an article finally appears on the display and Harper clicks on it.
"In 1981 Constance Welch, 24 years old, Jumps off Sylvania Bridge, Drowns In The River" The Hazel eyed boy reads out loud from his sister's side.
Dean's brow furrowed, "Does it say why she did it?" He asks.
Harper slightly moves to the side as she gives Sam a little more room to read off the computer screen. "An hour before they found her, she calls 911. Her two little kids are in the bathtub and she leaves them alone for a minute, but when she comes back, they aren't breathing...both die" Sam tells them.
"Our babies were gone, and Constance just couldn't bear it, Said husband, Joseph Welch."
Dean points towards the black and white photograph on the display, "That bridge look familiar to you?" The elder Winchester pondered.
Harper let out a sigh, "Yep..it sure does" the green eyed girl retorts.
It's now late and the trio arrives at Sylvania bridge. It's steel beams rusting in the moonlight, all of the police tape and Troy Squire's blue toyota are all removed from the area, like if they were never there before. Harper follows her brothers over to the edge of the steel bridge as she watches dean look down at the water. "So this is where Constance took the swan dive" Dean jeered with his cocky grin.
Sam's forehead furrowed, "So you think dad would have been here?" The youngest winchester wonders.
Dean shrugs, "Well, he's chasing the same story and we're chasing him." Dean starts to step away from the railing as he steps towards the center, with Sam and Harper following him from behind.
The brunette scoffed, "Okay...So now what's the plan?" The green eyed girl says pondering.
"Now we keep digging till we find him, it might take a while."
Sam sighed with utter frustration, "Dean, I told you I've got to get back by--" There older brother cuts him off, "Monday" Dean snapped. "Right, the interview" He says turning around back to his siblings.
"Yeah" Sam says lowly.
Harper peers intently at her older brother as she can see that he's now irritated. "You're really serious about this, aren't you?" Dean says with realization. "You think you're just gonna become some lawyer, marry your girl?"
"Maybe, why not?" Sam says with a shrug.
Harper sighed as she rubbed her temples, "Dean..please don't start up with any of this again" She groaned.
Dean rolls his eyes as he ignores his sister, "Does Jessica know the truth about you? Does she know about the things you've done?" He questioned.
The brown haired boy shakes his head, "No.. and she's never gonna know" Sam tells Dean.
He nods slowly, "Well, that's healthy" Dean retorts. The blonde Winchester then turns his attention back to Harper, "How about you little sis? Does that doctor of yours know what you really are?" Dean asked with a smirk.
Harper looks back up at her brother as she loomed towards him. "How about you shut it already...because I'm doing the right thing by protecting Nik" The brunette girl expresses, harshly.
Dean looks down at his sister, "Yeah..keep telling yourself that" He spat. "The both of you can pretend all you want but sooner or later you'll have to face up to who you really are" Dean announces as he starts to walk away from his younger siblings.
Both Sam and Harper share confused but annoyed looks as they start to follow Dean. "And who's that" Sam inquired.
"One of us" Dean chimed.
Sam scoffed as he rushes in front of Dean, "No I'm not like you. This is not going to be my life."
"Well, you two have a responsibility" Dean counters.
Harper scoffs, "To dad and his obsession?" The green eyed girl argues. "All I have are a few glimpses of Mom stored in my brain and Sam here..doesn't even remember her" She explained. Dean frowns as he met his sister's glossy gaze, now taking a step back. Harper wrapped her arms around herself as she slowly steps closer to Dean, "Mom's gone and she's never coming back" The brunette reminds him. Suddenly a now pissed off Dean adruptly pushes his sister against one of the metal beams but Sam quickly comes to Harper's defense as he shoves Dean to the ground.
The blonde winchester slowly looked back up, his expression now hardening. "Don't talk about her like that, Ever" Dean huffs as he rises up from the ground.
Harper looks to Sam, "I'm fine" she whispers as she stands besides her little brother.
"Guys?"
Harper looks up and now far down the bridge there's Constance Welch in her pale luminescent fluttering dress. The three siblings watch with surprise as she momentarily glances at them and then the woman in white jumps off the bridge's rail and into complete darkness. Without any hesitation Harper races over to the bridge's edge as she and her brothers now peer over the bridge's metal railing.
"Where did she go?" Dean asks, looking around the lake under them.
Sam shakes his head, "I don't know" he replies.
Harper tries looking downward but there's not any sign of Constance just black muddy water flowing down the stream under them. Unexpectedly a engine thunders to life causing the Winchester siblings to exchange stunned looks as they spin around towards the impala.
"What the--"
Harper shields her eyes from the glare of the impala's headlights as she raises a brow. "Who the hell is driving your car?" The green eyed girl muttered in utter shock. Without saying a word, Dean reaches into his pocket now dangling his keys in the air. The brunette and her two brothers shared bewildered looks as they stared upon Dean's black car. "How unfortunate..the dead lady is driving" Harper Winchester sneered out with a small hint of sarcasm. Suddenly with great speed the impala charges right at them with no one behind the wheel.
"Come on, Let's go! Go!" Sam shouts to his stunned siblings as he pushes them to run for there lives. The roaring impala starts bearing down on Harper, Sam, and Dean as it tries to run them over on the narrow country bridge. The brunette breaths heavily as she starts to realize that there isn't any room to dive out the way. So now there's only one choice to make. Harper Winchester swiftly jumps over the bridge's metal railing and her brothers tumble over it as they all jump for there lives. Meanwhile still on the bridge, the impala starts to die as the headlights begin to fade until it's perfectly still.
Now dangling from the bridge Harper holds on tight on one of the metal beams as she lunges her hand up at Sam. The brown eyed boy pulls his sister up towards the railing as he pulls her to safety. Harper looks around with a worried expression, "Where's Dean?" The brunette breathes out heavily. Samuel looks down at the muddy water below them as he sees a figure emerge from the oatmeal thick mud. It's Dean who's absolutely drenched in muck, head to toe.
Harper and Sam scoff out a surprised laugh as they watch there older brother who had just hauled himself from out of the mucky water. "Are you alright, Dean?" The green eyed girl calls out from the top of the bridge.
"I'm super" Dean calls up, resting his muddy head with a tired groan on the wet shore.
