Book 1 - Delicious Tarts and New Clothes

After what felt like an eternity, the tarts were finally done. Deuce was still in shock about the eggs, to the point where Ace asked what happened. Naomi had quickly brought their groceries to Ramshackle since it was on the way. However, she did take one of the pads and discreetly gave it to Serena. Serena blushed.

"How did you know?" She asked, as she hadn't mentioned it.

"I noticed a bloody piece of toilet paper this morning."

"I'm so sorry! I swear I'll clean that up later!" With that, she quickly rushed to the toilet, relieved not to have to rely on toilet paper anymore.

"What's up with her?" Grim asked. Naomi shushed him. "None of your business."

Cater popped by, now that the tarts were done. Once Serena was back, they ate one of the tarts together. The tart was absolutely delicious, even though Serena didn't really like chestnuts, which she didn't say though. That's when Cater pushed Trey into doing "the thing", and Trey asked what everyone's favorite food was. Ace said cherry pie, Grim said tuna, then started listing a bunch of foods, Deuce went with omelet rice, and Cater went with a lamb chop with diablo sauce.

"Uff... I got a lot of favorites. Though if I gotta choose, I'd say sushi." Serena said.

"Mine's blueberries, I guess. Or my brother's angel cake... God I miss that..." Naomi said.

Trey nodded, then said "Doodle Suit" and waved his magic pen. Then he told them to take another bite of their tarts. They did, and were all shocked when it suddenly tasted like the things they just said. For Grim, the taste even changed with every bite. Serena honestly found it a little odd to eat a tart that tasted like sushi.

Naomi however trembled when she tasted her brother's angel cake. It wasn't just like any cake, it was her brother's. It's been so long since she'd been able to taste it, or able to see him. She missed him...

"Oi, Naomi! What's wrong?" Ace asked, noticing her freezing up. Serena immediately hugged her when she saw her trembling.

"I'm sorry... I'm okay, really. I'm really happy, actually." Naomi said, her face not reflecting this at all. "You don't look happy." Cater pointed out. Naomi sighed. "I know... I've always struggled with expressing myself. Intense emotions automatically turn into overwhelmed trembling. Please don't mind me."

"If you say so..." Serena said, though she kept an eye on her. Deuce changed the topic by asking Trey about the spell. Trey explained that his signature spell could overwrite pretty much any characteristic. He described it as a "childish prestidigitation", unlike Riddle's signature spell "Off with your head", which was a weapon.

"It's still very useful. Much more useful than Riddle's honestly, since it can be applied to any situation." Serena said. "Riddle can take people's magic away. There are only a handful of reasons to do that. But your magic has so many applications. I mean, imagine you're in a train where someone vomited. You can just make the awful smell go away, at least for a while."

"... That's awfully specific." Deuce noted.

Trey thanked Serena, though he noticed it's gotten quite late. He decided Ace should hand over the tarts tomorrow, and reminded them of the unbirthday party. Trey allowed Deuce to also stay at Ramshackle for the night, to keep an eye on Ace.

Naomi had calmed down by now, so they returned to Ramshackle together. "We should probably have something other than tart for dinner, shouldn't we?" Serena suggested. "Naomi, what did you buy?"

"Some soups, chili con carne, ravioli... We could also just have toast." Naomi said. She hadn't put the cold cuts in the fridge yet since it wasn't turned on and she didn't have time earlier.

"I'll just make the ravioli, then. Everyone agree?" Serena said. They were all fine with it, aside from Grim who demanded tuna. "Okay, you can have tuna. But only one can!"

Serena went into the kitchen, looking for a pot. Once she found it, she put it on the stove and tried to turn it on, when suddenly all the lights went out. "Fuck..." Serena muttered, returning to the parlor in the dark. Ace and Deuce had pulled out their phones and turned on their flashlights..

"The good news is, at least the fuses still work. The bad news is that the kitchen is just as busted as the rest of the dorm..." She announced. "Now where's the fuse box?"

Deuce offered to look for it, quickly finding it in the hallway and putting the fuse back in, which turned on the lights again. Meanwhile Naomi and Serena brought out the toast and cold cuts to have instead.

"That's a huge safety hazard, we gotta get Crowley to repair this." Serena said. "He can't expect us to live in a house without a functioning kitchen."

They had dinner, and then they played cards until they went to sleep. Ace and Deuce slept in the parlor while Naomi, Serena and Grim went to their rooms.

That night, Serena had another dream about Alice in Wonderland: It was the scene where the Queen of Hearts punished the card soldier for not painting the roses correctly. When she woke up, she couldn't help but worry about the unbirthday party. Was it gonna go downhill?

Cater picked them up that morning and they went to Heartslabyul together. Once there, they were greeted by a whole bunch of Caters. Cater explained that his unique magic, Split Card, allows him to clone himself, though apparently that was very exhausting. Cater dragged them into painting the roses again. But that's when Felix came along.

"Naomi! I see you're all better. Do you have time now for your new uniforms?" He asked, holding what looked like a toy knife with fake blood on it.

"Are you already making Halloween costumes?" Serena asked. Felix laughed. "Oh that? No, Alex gave it to me to "protect myself against the monster". Still have to figure out where said monster is, though."

"Alex? You mean the freaky one with the screws on his head that fights the air?" Ace asked. Felix nodded. "Hey, it's not his fault he's like this. The asylum messed him up pretty badly." He turned to Serena and Naomi. "Now then, how about you two come with me now and I'll whip up some new uniforms for you?"

Naomi and Serena nodded, following Felix and ordering Grim to stay with Ace and Deuce. While walking through the halls, they saw that most students had been collared by Riddle. The air was heavy and thick enough you could cut it with a knife. Yet Felix remained chipper and unbothered by his surroundings. They arrived at his room. His quarter was easily recognizable by all the sewing equipment and fabrics strewn about. The room was set out for four students in total, but right now, they were alone.

"I already went ahead and designed a few female student uniforms for you. Here, take a look." Felix handed them a sketchbook with multiple designs, ranging from the classical sailor uniform to what looked like the male uniform, just with a skirt instead of pants. There were also multiple designs for the vest.

Naomi and Serena ultimately decided to go for the uniform that matched the male uniform after Felix told them that's what Darcilia chose when she came to him for a uniform last year, and chose a forest green for their vest. Serena asked for a longer skirt that reached to her knees, which Felix happily complied with. He took their measurements diligently, noting them down in his little notebook.

"Felix? I was wondering about that Alex boy. He seems to have a... um... reputation." Naomi asked hesitantly.

"Honestly, I don't know much about him. Rarely talks about his past." Felix said nonchalantly as he worked. "He was adopted by Crewel over a year ago, and before that he was apparently in an abusive asylum. No idea why he was there in the first place.. I know that they put two giant screws in his head, which now can't be removed without risking his life. But he's good, always trying to protect others from the monsters he hallucinates. Unfortunately, most of the other students just don't get him."

"That sounds tragic..." Naomi said. Serena looked on the ground. "It's difficult when people judge you for something that's out of your control..." She said.

"From what I can tell, Alex is doing pretty okay. I mean, he probably has a shit ton of trauma, but whenever I see him he's usually laughing." Felix waved his magic pen and the fabrics, thread and scissors flew around, seemingly making itself into two uniforms.

"There we go. You can go try them on in the bathroom." Felix said, letting the girls change. The clothes were a perfect fit. "These look amazing! Are you sure you don't want any compensation for this?" Serena exclaimed, turning around and letting her skirt twirl.

"Seriously, it's fine! I'm just happy you like them." Felix insisted. "Come, it's time for the unbirthday party." He disposed of the rags Naomi and Serena were wearing before. Then they headed for the unbirthday party.
