We Need To Talk
Sam woke up and yawned. He rubbed his eyes and slowly got out the hospital bed.
He surprisingly didn't have to throw up this morning. Maybe cause he didn't eat the night before.
The nurses had tried to get him to eat, but he refused. No matter how hungry he got, he'd never eat hospital food.
He went into the bathroom and did his business. When he finished, he looked in the mirror and turned to the side. He ran a hand over his stomach and smiled lightly.
His little bump was getting bigger and he was very proud of it. The only thing he wasn't proud of was the fact that he wouldn't know who the father was.
With a small sigh, he walked out and got back in his bed.
His doctor had told him that he would have to stay for a few days, so they could monitor some things, and he was not happy about that.
As he got comfortable again, his room door slowly opened. He looked over, trying to see who it was.
Cas poked his head in and saw Sam looking at him. He smiled softly and walked all the way in. "Hey Sam."
"Hey Cas."
Cas closed the door and walked over to the bed. "Here, I bought you this." He pulled a wrapped sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit out the inside of his jacket pocket and gave it to him.
"Thank you, Cas." Sam smiled at him and picked it up. He unwrapped it and started to hungrily eat.
Cas sat down in the chair next to him and waited for him to finish.
When he did finish, Sam had a pleased smile on his face. "Thank you so much, Cas."
"You're welcome, Sam," he said with a small smile. His expression turned serious after a moment. "Sam, we really need to talk."
"Oh... Ok. About what?"
"If I'm going to help you, you have to tell me what's going on."
"Cas..."
"Please, Sam? You need to trust me."
Sam looked down at his lap. He thought about trying to change the subject, but knew it wouldn't work. "I-I have two kids... Thomas and Jamaica. Their mother is... Is dead, so I'm the only one taking care of them. I had to quit college and start working. I was able to save up money and I bought a house. We needed to eat, so I got another job.."
"You worked two jobs? How old were you?" Cas asked softly.
"Around 22 or 23."
"Oh, Sam. Why didn't you ask anyone for help?"
"I didn't want help from anyone..."
"Ok... Ok. You can continue."
"The money that I would earn would go straight to food. But... I never made enough for all of us to eat. So I would go for about two, three days a time without eating. Years later, everything was still the same, but... Jay and Tom started college. They both got scholarships, but that doesn't pay for everything. So I got yet another job. I was making enough, so I was finally able to eat while putting a lot on the side for their tuition."
He paused for a minute before continuing. "But, bills started coming in more and more and suddenly it wasn't enough again. So I... did what I had to do..."
"Which was?"
"Selling my body..."
"Sam!" Cas stared at him, different emotions on his face. But, the one that showed the most was anger. "Why the fuck would you do that?! Instead of going to someone that would help you with everything, you become a prostitute!"
"I-I just... It just happened.. Some guy was talking at the bar and said he needed someone and that he would pay, so I did it..."
"Sam-!"
"I needed the money! I made 500 dollars! In just one night! So I kept doing it and doing it! Then... Then Gabe took me to the hospital for my puking and I- I found out I was pregnant..."
"WHAT?!" Cas jumped up. "YOU'RE PREGNANT?!"
"Y-Yes..."
"YET YOU KEPT WORKING, BARELY ATE, AND BARELY GOT ANY SLEEP, RIGHT?!"
Sam looked up at Cas, lip trembling. He nodded once.
"WHAT THE HELL SAM?! YOU'RE PUTTING YOUR UNBORN CHILD IN DANGER JUST SO YOU COULD KEEP YOUR PRIDE?!"
"I-I needed to support my children, Cas!" Tears started to fall from his eyes. "I can't stop working! I can't!" He started crying harder.
Cas wrapped his arms around Sam, hugging him tightly. He felt Sam grip the front of his shirt and cry into his chest. "You don't have to stop, yet.. You need to pick one job to stay at though. Take a break from the others. And no more prostitution. You're better than that."
"I-I gotta ea-eat! And pay b-bills, a-and-"
"Shh... I'm gonna help you, Sam. I promise."
