Taken For Granted

"Glad to see you're awake." I heard a familiar voice say, sending chills down my spine. Wherever I was, it was extremely dark, making it impossible to observe my surroundings or see who was in the room with me. The voice was disguised to sound deep and robotic, but I couldn't guess anything else past that. I tried to move my arms, but they were strapped down to the cold metal table I was laying on. I couldn't move my head or legs either.

"Where am I?" I shouted out to the darkness, only hearing an eerie echo in return.

"Beginning test one in three, two, one." The voice counted down before I felt something sharp stab into my neck. I bit my tongue to keep from crying out in pain, my insides instantly feeling like they were on fire.

"It only hurts a second, there's nothing to fear." The voice tried to soothe me, but I didn't listen. I couldn't listen. The scream I fought so hard to keep trapped ripped free from my throat, the pain unbearable as I arched my back, sweat matting my hair to my forehead.

"I'll check on you in a couple of hours." The voice whispered in my ear before another sharp object pricked me in the neck, sending me into a blissful sleep.

Bob, Wade, Mandy, and Molly were unconscious and tied up together with rope, sitting back to back in the middle of the concrete floor. Their heads were bowed, as if they were praying.

"Do we have anything sharp we could use?" Nate scanned the room. They looked around, but found nothing useful.

"I'll be right back." Jack went out to the helicopter wreckage, digging out a small scrap of metal and pressed it against the rope. Before he could saw the rope off, Bob bolted awake, eyes wide with panic as he tried to scoot away from the metal shard Jack was holding, waking up the others.

"Bob, it's just me!" Jack laid down the shard of metal, gently laying a hand down on Bob's shoulder.

"Jack?" Bob shook his head in disbelief.

"Signe!" Molly exclaimed happily as Signe knelt down in front of her with a reassuring smile.

Jack quickly cut through the rope, helping Bob and the others stand. They all looked skinnier and paler than before, but otherwise seemed okay.

"How did you guys get here?" Mandy asked, brushing imaginary specks of dust off of her dirt stained jeans.

"The Queen flew us in on a helicopter-"

"You mean the one crashed outside?" Wade interrupted incredulously.

"Yeah." Ethan nodded.

"We just hiked over here since we figured someone would find us in a big city like this, and I was hoping to find Mark and Amy." Bob added.

Signe, Nate, Ethan, Jack, and Tyler exchanged glances filled with uncertainty on if they should tell them or not.

"Mark didn't make it out of Seattle and Amy...she's outside." Tyler grimaced.

"Hey Amy!" Molly ran outside to go see her friend.

"I thought you said she was outside?" She frowned as she walked back inside a couple moments later.

Curious, the group followed Molly outside to see that Amy was gone with only a trace of blood to serve as a reminder of where she was.

"How-what-" Signe stuttered, speechless.

"She died, how can she be gone?" Tyler wondered aloud.

"She's dead?" Mandy repeated, startled.

"Look, its almost night time, lets just go back to Nate's shelter, eat dinner, then decide what to do from there." Jack suggested, trying to diffuse the confusion and tension before a fight broke out.

"If you want to help Sean, why don't you just run away like last time, that seemed to fix everything!" Signe snapped angrily, venting her frustration.

All eyes turned towards Signe.

"Okay." Jack's expression changed drastically, becoming darker with sadness and anger glittering in his eyes as he turned his back to his friends and started walking away.

"Sean-" Signe started.

"You know what, you're right. I'm a problem. I'm always trying to stay positive when everyone else is wanting to give up, just like last time, but it doesn't help....I'm useless and just waste supplies." He chuckled coldly while shaking his head as he shoved his hands deep in his pockets and continued walking away.

"Jack..." Wade trailed off, unsure of what to say to convince him to stay.

"I'm not Jack anymore. I'm not anybody anymore." He paused, looking back at Signe one last time before walking on.

"You know what, leave, I don't care!" Signe yelled at his retreating form before sinking to her knees on the ground, no tears left to cry as she hung her head.

He didn't look back as he disappeared out of view.

A dark mood settled over the group as they stood in sunned silence.

"I agree with Jack, we need to get back to the shelter and decide what to do from there." Nate broke the silence after a couple of moments.

"We don't need to plan what to do, we need to find Jack!" Mandy interjected.

"Give him his space, I'm sure he'll come back before it gets too dark." Tyler said confidently.

No one else shared his optimism.

They trudged back to the shelter, arriving just before the sky changed to night. No one spoke as Ethan cooked more canned chicken noodle soup for dinner, Tyler cleaning and re-bandaging his shoulder where he got shot. Everyone could feel the absence of Jack like the absence of the sun from the sky.

Signe didn't eat, instead curling up in the corner far away from the others. They could hear her crying, but no one knew what to say to comfort her. After everyone ate, they all laid down and stared at the wooden boards until they finally fell asleep.
