Days of the Future

July 25, 1901

Remy and Aoki stood silently in the graveyard in Ultris. They stood in front of a towering monument of purest marble, standing majestically at twice the height of a man, overlooking the gravestones around it. On the monument was a plaque made of bronze with silver letters etched on it. The monument was the gravestone that marked the place of burial for Taryn and her father. Remy quickly wiped a tear that fell from his eyes. Aoki stood in silence, pain and sorrow tearing at him from the inside. They read the inscription for Taryn and her father.

Here lies Lord Garamonte, one of the greatest judges in all of Luthadrian history. May he rest in peace alongside his dearest daughter and most wondrous of ladies Taryn Garamonte.

Remy muttered "it's just unbelievable that after all we've been through, Taryn never received the recognition she deserves! She laid down her life to save the neerynd realm and contributed immensely to peace in ours. She was a child of two worlds and a bringer of peace! She was the greatest hero I've ever known and my dearest friend! She deserves so much better than a single sentence of recognition!"

"I too feel the same way Remy," said Aoki.

"It's so unfair that we can't tell others about her heritage or her accomplishments without seeming like raving madmen!" exclaimed Remy with bitterness.

"Then we'll give her the recognition she deserves!" declared Aoki. "We'll work hard at accomplishing our dreams of uniting our two empires! We'll ensure that the dream we all share, and her simply marvellous efforts at achieving it, don't go to waste! We'll make sure her sacrifice was not in vain! We'll bring about a brighter future in her stead! That is a promise!"

"I've never seen you so cheerful and optimistic before," remarked Remy, allowing a faint smile to creep onto his face.

"I guess something about me changed when we undertook our arduous journey together," Aoki replied.

"Yeah," said Remy.

Aoki bid Remy farewell as he prepared to return to Valtassia alongside Misaka, ready to start his efforts at ensuring everlasting peace in the world. Remy stayed in the graveyard for a minute longer. He took one last look at Taryn's monument before shifting his gaze to look at the sky. The skies above Ultris had also become brighter. The clouds of ash and gas had parted ever so slightly to reveal a sliver of sunlight. The crimson light felt gentle and warming, like a herald of things to come. In that moment, Remy felt as if Taryn's spirit still lived on alongside them.

We'll make sure your sacrifice doesn't go to waste!  Remy declared in his mind. He allowed a full smile to spread across his face as he too left the graveyard. He followed Aoki back to Ulmstadt Park and the airships that awaited them there. He caught up to Aoki just outside of the graveyard and the duo took the nearest steam carriage towards the airships, ready to bring about a brighter future and determined to never forget their dearest companion.
