{Twenty-Two}
The weeks after the giant order for Mr. Jackson's stock market, the bakery becomes busier. Employees of the market come in for children's birthdays, anniversaries, or simply for desserts after a long day. Pamela is seen grinning and greeting everyone in the line for the counter, going around to booths, and conversing with customers sitting in. Sam and Robin have been assigned to the kitchen, teaming up on all the orders to keep up. Another coworker tending the counter and money with the assistance of Pamela.
Spencer keeps Sam and the dogs in his apartment, not allowing the baker to return to his own home, even to simply gather clothes or supplies. Making excuses each time Sam requests to grab anything on his own, tempting his boyfriend with cooking or serving the man to distract him. The puppy boy doesn't try as hard as he thinks he should to get back across the hall, but he enjoys being with Spencer and likes the man is so set on keeping close.
Fenrir, Cerberus, and Orthrus adore being in the bigger apartment as well. Spencer had moved their leashes and harnesses into his home, hanging them up in order by the door. Sam hadn't noticed until the morning after the man did it, laughing and leaving it be. He loved the sight of them hung up in the apartment, delighted at the thought that the youtuber wanted them - the animals and human- to stay at his home more often.
The dogs love lounging around the big couches and the bed when the man allows them to, playing and wrestling with Spencer as Sam cooks or picks a movie out. They have their own place to eat in the living room, scattered about; by the tv, by the end of the couch, and against the wall by the TV stand.
While Sam is rushing around at the bakery, Spencer is home recording videos with the dogs walking into and out of his office, introducing his 'new family' to his viewers. In between filming, he is searching for a bigger apartment or houses for rent that are large pet friendly. It takes him a week to find the perfect place for his boy's; a medium sized house for rent at the edge of the town, it's in walking distance to the dog park and the bakery, and the ice cream shop they love.
It has a large back yard that has a privacy fence, certainly big enough for three giant dogs and anything Spencer will buy them. Three bedrooms, one bathroom, open plan kitchen and living area, all hardwood floors and completely newly renovated. Everything is new and repainted, the kitchen is clean and bigger than Sam's own and Spencer's; the baker will be elated with it.
The man has already contacted the owner, spoke to him and set up a time to meet when he knows Sam will be off from class and work. Planning to go see it himself and if he feels his family will love it, he'll sign papers and pay rent for the first few months to prepare to move in. Sam may hesitate on instantly moving in with him, but Spencer is confident he can convince his boy to follow him to this house. Sam craves what the man can give him; love, praise and belonging. The baker has realized he needs and wants to be with Spencer, and that is all the redhead needs to push the puppy boy into following him anywhere he goes.
Even if it takes a few weeks to do Sam will be in that house with the dogs, if Spencer has any say in it. I'll kidnap the dogs if I have to and consider stealing everything in his apartment, Spencer nods along to his thoughts. Thinking up what he will say to get Sam to move, what excuses his boy will use and answers to them, this way he is prepared to shut them down instantly. I'll get him there, sooner or later and it will be sooner.
Spencer has spent the day in the apartment, filming videos and editing, playing with the large dogs as a break. Sam has been at the bakery, sending text messages and pictures for proof that he got his lunch and snacks down without forgetting. He's been particularly busy today, orders coming in faster than he could keep up with and saying the small building has been packed up with people.
Robin needed to take on most of the orders that the boy couldn't handle, the coworker has been doing the smaller orders; cookies or pastries. While Pamela put Sam on cakes, large and mini. Birthday requests came in more than usual, keeping the boy rushing to decorate or bake specific flavors. By the end of the day, the two bakers are exhausted and sitting in a booth to relax, their boss giving them cupcakes for "Hard day's work!"
The redhead finds this scene when he walks in to pick his puppy up, the dogs tagging along with him this time. The bakery is closed with no lingering customers to complain about the animals inside, Pamela greeting them kindly and petting them, yet giving a warning to keep them on the floor and away from the glass counter display. She pats the tall man's arm, grinning at him before moving to check the displays and kitchen.
Robin tenses at the sight of Spencer, eye's staying trained on the dogs trying to pull him toward his new friend. He's amazed at how large the animals are, pictures didn't prepare him for seeing them in person, but they're also gorgeous. Coats shiny and sleek, a seemingly perfect weight for the breed types and from what he sees, beautifully trained as well. They don't pull the man, eager and excited, yet they don't yank and jump to hurry their walker along.
Sam grins at them, jumping up to jog over and kneel down to greet them joyfully. "Hi guys! I missed you so much! Were you guys good for Spence?"
The dogs lick and nuzzle against the human, wiggling excitedly and trying to climb on top of the short human. Spencer laughs, the scene of his puppy trying to give the dogs equal affection and attention filling his heart with delight.
Loving how his boy gets down on the floor with the animals, even in public, as if he can't control the urge to be closer to them or be the one crawling around like a little pet. His laugh gains the boys' attention, the smile on the pale face widening when he looks up. The youtuber ruffles the kneeling mans', faintly blue and black roots, hair as his instinct demands him to do.
"Hey, baby. They were great today, were you?" At the questions and action on his hair, Sam blushes, nodding his head quickly.
His voice is incredulous, gasping at the inquiry, eager to show he was good as well. "Of course, yes! I sent the pictures, did you see them?!"
Smirking, the man nods and bends to kiss the boy's head. "Yea, I saw them. I was really happy to see you remembering to eat, made me super proud of you, pretty boy. Thank you for the awesome pictures."
Sam grins even wider at the praise, genuinely proud of himself for listening and receiving those words from his boyfriend. It's so simple to eat, but he doesn't always remember on busier days or when he's nose deep on baking. To have someone keeping track and actually demanding proof has been a huge help to him, eager to earn what praise Spencer gives and the sensation that comes along with it.
No one has taken such an interest in caring for him since he moved from his parents house, the boy can admit to himself that it feels great. Having Spencer doing such things as this only makes him feel loved and valued, things he hadn't received from humans in a long time.
Kissing all the dog's heads and giving them a firm, long pet, Sam stands up and hugs the taller man. "Thank you. How was your day?"
"Boring without you at home, they kept pulling me to play and I can't say no to them." Amber eyes stare down at the body clinging to him, chest filling with pride and rapture at how happy his boy is.
The baker laughs, forgetting his surroundings for a moment when he stays clung to the side of his boyfriend. "Sorry, they haven't really had someone to stay with them when I'm gone. I hope they didn't bother your work."
Spencer shakes his head, reaching down to pat the closest animal body, Orthrus, near him. "Nah, they helped me film and edit. The videos came out much better with them, they love the camera and games."
This comment perks Robin's interest, wondering what exactly this new man does for a living. Sam was never a people person as far as the man could tell from working with him and seeing him so invested in this large, intimidating and clearly violent man has brought concerns for Robin.
The first impression of the man sticks to him, threatening and grabbing him in such a way that had scared Robin. He doesn't want his coworker and new friend to be harmed in any way, especially by someone that was supposed to love him as a partner does. He can admit he is thrown off by how Spencer acts with Sam.
The man had completely changed when his boyfriend walked away, turning menacing and demanding not to get too close to the baker. Yet when Sam is around the man is sweet and caring, even if he makes the younger man do things that don't seem all that normal. Like the pictures. Granted, Sam seems happy to take them, but it was just odd to see.
Spencer also says, does, certain things that strike Robin as odd, asking if his boyfriend was good and petting him like another dog. The coworker isn't sure if that's the healthiest relationship, but he also knows how different couples are- there's a lot of things he doesn't understand and Sam may be more out there in that spectrum. He certainly doesn't mind how Spencer speaks and acts with him. The man is very happy and he shows clearly to everyone that he is devoted to the older man.
Stepping into the conversation makes his stomach sink slightly, uncertain if Spencer will act out by the interruption with Sam present. Still he speaks up, standing from the booth to come closer. "What kind of work do you do?"
Sam is quick to turn to Robin, as if just remembering where he is and blushes at the fact he may have ignored his new friend. Mumbling an apology to him, which only earns a smile before they turn back to Spencer. The redhead has amber eyes narrowed, not appreciating the disturbance in their conversation. Certainly not by another man, let alone someone getting closer to Sam as a friend.
He still answers, knowing he needs to unless he wants Sam to see his disdain and try to scold him for being rude. Keeping his tone borderline kind and impertinent, just enough to not upset his boy. "I edit videos for other people and film for YouTube, or stream."
Robin shutters at the glare he receives, glancing at his new friend only to see him whispering to the dogs with a grin, perfectly content to let them speak by themselves. Since he had invited himself into this topic, he knows he needs to continue and says the first thing that comes to mind. "Oh? What kind of videos?"
He isn't shocked at the clipped answer he receives. "Games, horror specifically."
Then Spencer ignores him to look down at Sam, the deep voice changing into a gentle timbre. "We should get home, Sammy. They haven't eaten yet and you need to get some rest, you've been busy today. I need to run something by you too, it's important."
The baker nods, not even considering arguing against the decision. Turning his coworker to smile, gesturing to the dogs. "Sorry to cut our conversation short, Robin. But I'm exhausted, I'm sure we both need rest. Maybe we can meet up and you meet them officially instead of rushing."
Giving a light smile, Robin waves him off. "I understand, you're right, I'm almost asleep on my feet anyway. I'll see you later, Sam!"
Spencer guides his boy's out, hand on the human puppy's back to keep him on track out of the building. Sam waves before turning forward and allowing himself to be gently pushed out, the fresh cool air hitting his face as they step out of the door. It's refreshing after hours of being surrounded by sweet and backed air, the scent of frosting and cake. He steals the leash from Spencer's hand, smiling at the playful scoff he earns. "Damn, baby, you coulda just asked for that. I woulda gave it to you, maybe."
"Maybe?! They're my dogs!" The baker laughs, leaning into the mans' side as a heavy arm is rested on his shoulder.
His boyfriend shakes his head and puts on a facade of disappointment, leaning down to speak directly into his ear, rough and husky like. "Nah, Pup, you're mine. That means, they're mine too. Right?"
Blushing scarlet, Sam shyly nods, staring at the animals in front of them to avoid the smoldering eyes gazing down at him. A giggle uncontrollably spilling out at the butterfly sensation his stomach got and the strike of pure ecstasy in his heart at the claim. "...Yea.."
"That's damn right. Got my own little family now, thanks to you and I ain't letting you go. You're my boys'." It's said with obvious pride and love, the possession of the words hidden by the affection. Spencer means every word, nothing will take Sam or the animals away from him. Not until he's dead and buried six feet under.
The honest statement only reinforces the passion that is growing in Sam for the man, feeling so wanted and belonging with Spencer. It cements what he had already known, that he would follow the man anywhere, merely because he is everything he wants. The dogs and he receive genuine care and love, they belong and are comfortable with the man.
The young man can't see anyone coming into their lives and changing it in such a good way as Spencer has. He wants to stay with the man until he is told to leave, whenever that happens. It's been a short time period, he is aware of that; merely a few months, three or four at most. However, Sam finds he doesn't necessarily care for that.
While he is anxious by how attached he has become to the youtuber, it's overshadowed by all the emotions the man brings. Sam has grown to be healthier and come out of his shell with the help of Spencer, given the push he needed. Now, he works much harder with a new friend, his dogs have someone with them and seem much more energetic. Spencer is good for him, as far as he is concerned at least. Suspecting he may even love the man, even if the thought is scary.
The walk home is spent in peaceful quiet, little comments here and there of what the dogs sniff, making plans for the store. Spencer gives five minutes to talk his boy into forgoing buying groceries for his own apartment, talking him into only helping to buy food for Spencer's place instead. He's been keeping them away from Sam's home, and once that is pointed out, the boy is easy to agree.
The conversation is light, each man content with silence between them, enjoying the presence of the other and the dogs. Spencer is planning how he'll bring up the move, wanting to be open about switching places then drop that he wants his boys to follow him. That would give Sam the openness of commutation that he needs and time to think on joining his boyfriend. Going to the house on the baker's day off to check it out then coming back to pick his boy's up, show them and let Sam have the illusion of a choice.
Back at the apartment building, they go up to their floor. There's no stopping at Sam's door, the boy doesn't even consider it as he goes right to Spencer's - just like the dogs. It makes the older smirk, enjoying how the conditioning to come straight to his door had worked. Sam waits patiently with the three dogs at his feet, all four watching as the man unlocks and opens the door for them. Letting the puppies go in first, watching Sam remove the harnesses to let the dogs free to relax.
Instead of allowing his human puppy to remove his own hoodie, Spencer beats him to it; sliding the fabric off his arms like he did to the harnesses, hanging it up directly next to them. Sam giggles, unsuspecting of the action yet happy to let the man do it.
"Go change and sit down on the couch, Imma start something for us after we have a chat." Is what the dominant commands, proud that his boy doesn't argue with him. Nodding and going through the apartment to the redheads room, no longer shy about being here or going through dressers. He was told to bring some of his clothes here, put in a drawer next to Spencer's pajama pants.
Coming back out in his sleeping shorts and one of his boyfriends shirts, he sees Spencer on the couch with his laptop. The dogs surrounding him; Fenrir resting an old blanket by the chaise connected to the sectional, Cerberus and Orthrus are cuddled up on the chaise above their older brother. Sitting down next to the man he glances at the computer, at first assuming it's an editing software. However, he sees a beautiful little house with a decently sized front yard.
The sight confuses him, Spencer has only moved in some months ago and there's no real reason he can think of that would make his boyfriend consider moving. Their neighbors are quiet and kind, there's no one here that gives the man trouble and the apartment is one of the bigger units in the building.
"What's that?" He only asks for his curiosity, knowing it may be stupid - it's very obviously a house.
Spencer smiles at him, pulling up a full screen picture of the house and leaning back against the couch. Tugging Sam along with him to lean against his chest, pressing a kiss to his temple. "That is the house I'm going to look at on Sunday. If I like it, Imma go ahead and rent it."
The older of them watches Sam's eyes go wide, flicking between him and the picture. "But- you just moved here. What about-"
"Ah, ah. Hold up." Smiling and petting a hand through the boy's hair, he gives silent praise for Sam pausing his sentence. "I'm not doing this for me, pretty boy. I wanna move because this place feels too small for us."
Sam furrows his eyebrows confused. "What do you mean? It fits you okay, and we don't really live here, but it's comfortable for us." He gestures to the sleeping, cozy dogs to add to his point.
This gains a chuckle, his partner shaking his head with a smirk. "That's what I mean. You don't live with me, and I want you to, but this place isn't what we need. They would love a yard to play in and I bet you would like a bigger kitchen. I would like to get a larger space to record in." He points to the dogs too, then to the picture. "This place can give us that, I hope. That's why I want to check it out. See if it matches our needs."
Uncertainly biting at his lip, the pale man hesitates for a moment. "You want us to live with you? Really?"
Grinning, the youtuber nods and tightens his hold on his slighter boyfriend. "Yea, of course! I want to have my boys' close to me and the best way for that to happen, is being in the same house. I want to give you and the boys over there a place to really call home. Because that apartment across the hall? That's definitely not a good place for you guys."
He knows Sam is listening extremely carefully to his words, considering it. So he continues, completely selling a place he hadn't visited yet. "Think about it, baby. The dogs playing in a fenced back yard, chasing a ball and wrestling in the grass. You get this clean, big kitchen with space for everything you need to bake or cook. We could get privacy, they can bark all they want and it's close to the bakery and the park. We could even make one of the rooms into a puppy room, huh? Give them their own room? Talk about spoiled."
Admittedly, Sam loves everything he is hearing. He wants to follow Spencer, to be in their own home. Yet he knows how his parents would react to this news, moving in with a man they didn't even know he was dating. He hadn't thought to tell his mother when she calls, getting distracted by whatever she tells him. She'll be upset they hadn't meant Spencer, but this is what Sam genuinely wants; to be with the man and be close with him. Give his dogs an actual yard to play in, they hadn't had their own space to run in. They lived in his apartment and he feels horrible for that, trying to make up for it with daily walks to the park.
Slowly, he nods, eyes studying the cute house on the screen and picturing living in it with Spencer. "Okay... If you think it'll be good. We'll go with you."
It shocks Spencer slightly, having thought his boy would take a few days or weeks to think about it. This makes him incredibly happy, knowing for a fact now how much trust Sam has in him and he grins widely, gripping Sam's chin to tilt his head up, kissing him breathless. Jumping up and exciting the dogs with a shout that they are, "getting your own place!!" Sam laughs at the grown man bouncing around with the three dogs, getting increasingly confident on his decision at the silly sight.
