Chapter 12_ Lucas, help!
Miss David was droning on and on about the revolution in China, and I was really bored. But I was listening to her, with my eyes closed, and my head on the desk.
"Mary," she screeched.
"What?" I sat up suddenly.
Everyone started laughing. I felt something wet on my cheek, and realised that it was my drool. I hastily wiped it off with the back of my hand. Everyone burst into laughter again.
"What's that on your desk, Mary?" asked Martin, pointing at the little pool of drool.
Students craned their necks to see, and started laughing again.
Without thinking, I put my history book on the drool.
"So, you drool while sleeping," said Miss David.
"I ... No. I wasn't sleeping," I said.
"Stand up when I'm talking to you," she spat.
I stood up, this time making as little noise as possible.
"Why were you sleeping while I was lecturing? I work hard to teach you something, and you try to mock me by showing despicable behaviour, as well as disrupt the class with your snoring," she said.
Everyone snickered again.
"I wasn't sleeping, Miss David. I was listening to your lecture," I said.
"You were. Were you? Tell me then, what were we studying about?" she asked.
Of course I knew what she was lecturing about. I have this strange power of listening to lectures while sleeping. It's true, really.
"You were telling us how the people of China struggled for revolution. China was once unrecognised by the world, but now it is an important member of the United Nations. Your last sentence was that revolution is not the cause of ..." I was giving the summary of her lecture, and she butted in.
"So what if you have already read the chapter? That doesn't mean you can snore away during my lecture. There are a lot of things that aren't mentioned in the book. If you don't want to listen to the lecture, then maybe you should stay home, or remain out of the classroom during my lecture. Is that clear?" she asked.
Yep, it was pretty clear that her thirst for revenge wasn't yet clenched. She was trying to provoke me, so that she could get a reason to get even with me, after what happened at the principal's office. But I wouldn't let her.
"I'm sorry, Miss David. I should have given you my undivided attention. I assure you that I won't sleep in your lecture again," I said, looking defeated.
But she was the one defeated. She had, yet again, failed to provoke me into rudeness or misbehaving.

"Mangy! Are you deaf?"
I kept walking towards the cafeteria, ignoring Hilda.
I was suddenly yanked back. Lisa had tugged at my shoulder forcefully.
"What's your problem?" we both said at the same time.
"What's yours?" I asked.
"You just ignored Hilda," she said.
"First of all, I ignored no one, because no one called me. My name's Mary, not Mangy. And secondly, according to my information, you are not Hilda. So its none of your business, if I talk to her or ignore her," I said, annoyed.
"She's my best friend," said Lisa.
"The last time I checked, there was a difference between best friend and a personal servant," I said.
"I'm not her servant!" it was her turn to get annoyed.
"Yeah, right!" I said and turned around, completely ignoring Hilda.
"Not so fast," said Hilda and grabbed my arm.
"What's your problem?" I asked.
"I have heard you have a secret admirer," she smirked.
"I don't," I replied.
"That's not what Lily told me," she said.
"Lily's a big liar. She once said that you fell into a pigsty when you were in middle school. Is that true?" I said.
I had lied about the pigsty part. Hehe.
"No, of course it isn't true. Well, we'll see if she was lying to me or not, tomorrow. She also told me that he gave you a white tulip, and no note. I thinks he's perfect for you. You both look like you are of the same social status," she smirked.
"You're just jealous!" I said without thinking.
She and Lisa burst into laughter. "Jealous of what? A white tulip, a non romantic secret admirer, or your sack like clothes?" said Hilda.
"Or your non existent beauty," put in Lisa, fingering her flawless skin.
"Inner beauty, which you both clearly lack, is way better than outer beauty," I replied, and turned to go.
"The last time I heard that line, I got emotionally attached to my pet dinosaur," said Hilda to my retreating back.
I considered it better to keep my mouth shut. It's not like I didn't have a good comeback, but my stomach was growling for food, and Hilda wouldn't stop any time soon.
~~~
After the last lecture, I went towards my locker and saw Harvey leaning against it. I debated whether to go, push him to the side, and put all the unnecessary books in the locker, or just leave. He hadn't seen me yet. Maybe if I go to him, he'll try to humiliate me, or even try to be nice, which was even worse than being humiliated.
Curse him! Now I'll have to carry my heavy backpack, all the way to my house. I retraced my steps, and went to the main gate. Lucas was standing there, looking for someone. Probably his beloved Hilda.
I was suspicious to see him getting alert when he saw me coming. He quickly took out his phone and called someone. I quickened my pace and exited the school gates.
Suddenly, someone grabbed my backpack. I turned to see Lucas standing there with a big stupid grin on his handsome face.
What is it with people stopping me by grabbing me from behind? Don't they have tongues?
"What is it now?" I growled.
"I ... I wanted to ask you something," he said.
"What?" I growled again.
"Can you tutor me?" he asked.
"What?" I asked, thinking I had heard wrong.
"You know, I don't get good marks in biology and mathematics. Please tutor me," he pleaded.
"I'm sorry. I don't have time," I said.
How could I tutor a big idiot like him? He was always at the bottom of the class. And he was Hilda's boyfriend. She'll try to make my life even more miserable.
"Please," he pleaded again.
"Why don't you ask Hilda?" I asked.
"She'll make fun of me," he replied.
Me being the most soft hearted girl I am, I couldn't bear to see him looking so insecure.
"Okay, I'll try to take out some time from my study," I said.
"My dad will pay you," he said.
"That won't be necessary," I said.
"My dad won't let you tutor me without payment," he said.
"Okay then, when should we start," I asked.
"What about now?" he asked.
"Fine with me," I said.
"Let me get my books from my locker, and then we'll get going. I'll drop you to your house afterwards," he said, and went into the school again.
I was waiting for him, when I felt like I was being watched. I glanced around, but saw nobody.
After a few minutes, I saw Lucas coming back. He had books in his hands. He stopped suddenly and yelled something inaudible.
"Yes?" I asked, cupping my hand behind my ear, indicating him to speak louder.
"Behind you!" he screamed, dropping his books.
Before I could turn my head, a pair of hands covered my eyes.
"Hey, let go!" I screamed, "help! Lucas!"
Before I could scream again, the kidnapper uncovered my eyes and covered my face with a napkin dipped in chloroform. I tried to hold my breath, but he didn't remove the napkin.
After a few seconds, my vision blurred and I was engulfed by darkness.
The last sight I saw, was of Lucas running away.
Author's note:
Picture of Lucas attached.
Well, I'm sorry that I couldn't include the scene with Harvey in this chapter. Don't worry, it'll come.
As you can very well see, she is kidnapped. Any guesses who? The first person to guess correctly will get a dedication in the next chapter.
And Mary's little superpower of sleep listening to lectures is real. Yeah, I have it. Any of you? And how many of you drool while sleeping? Sorry if it's too personal :D
What did you think about this chapter? Tell me in the comments, and don't forget to vote, follow and share, if you liked it.
Stay tuned, for another update is on its way.
Tata. See ya!
