Worthy strolled happily with Dawson in the huge new gardens of Trunswick. Rumfuss grunted. Dawson ran over to him.

"What's wrong?" called Worthy.

"His leg's caught on some rope."

"Oh, ok, need help?"

"Nah, I'll be fine. You go ahead, I'll catch up."

"Alright." Worthy turned and walked several steps before he heard Dawson scream. Worthy spun around to see a cage had been dropped on him. He ran to his brother.

"Heya, Worthy" said a girl from behind him. "It was really dumb your brother to tell me everything about this place while I was working for him" said Jey, a sneer on her pale face. Hands on her hips, she strutted towards him. "You wanna fight, cat boy?" Worthy drew his sword and they clashed.

"Why are you doing this"

"Rumfuss pays high"

"Did no noe ever teach you anything"

"Ow yes they did get money and survive"

"Other than that"

"Serve on one but yourself"

"Who taught you that"

"Me"

"Ow do stop being so dum"

"Ses the boy who tripped over his own tail"

"How-"

"Shadow." That was all the distraction he needed and Worthy was on his knees bleeding from multiple wounds. He didn't bother to beg for forgiveness after he'd seen her kill that soldier who'd done the same.

"Shadow wouldn't want this" he said, trying to be smart.

"I don't do what she wants, I just don't kill or fight her" she said, as if Worthy should have known.

"You'd suit a red cloak."

"Would I? Well, maybe I'll buy one with all the money I'll be getting from Rumfuss."

"You're as annoying as your father."

"Ugh, he was annoying. I mean, imagine if your father didn't let you get a snake- oh wait, he did!" She lowered her sword and admired her scales. Worthy groaned. His legs were too sore to run. Then someone jumped out at her. She spun, blocking the attack, but Worthy was able to crawl over to Dawson and free him. Dawson helped Worthy up and the two of them set off. Worthy looked back to see a member of the militia fighting her.

"Go, get out of there, you'll never beat her!" he called. Jey turned and rolled her eyes.

"You really are dumb." She fired an arrow at him from a bow the militia man had been carrying. She really was good at using whatever others had. She smiled, an angry flash in her eyes.

"Please, remember the fun we had together?"

"Fun? That was nothing compared to some of the things I do."

"So you're saying you will kill Shadow's crush?"

"You are not her crush."

"So what, I'm her friend!" She shook her head, the simle staying put.

"You listen to me. You are nothing to her, or, for that matter, me."

"So you do want to kill me."

"Kill? No, I need you. Someone like you could give me a lot of money." Worthy breathed a short-lived sigh of relief.

"So you do have some imagination."

"Duh."

"I've been auctioned before. Hardly anyone wanted me."

"So what? I can make you look better."

"Yeah, I don't think so."

"Really, so why are you standing in a corner then?" Worthy had backed into a corner with a small door which his brother had escaped through.

"I'll give you double the money they are giving for Rumfuss."

"Why didn't you say so?" She lowered her sword and strolled over to him.

"Erm, how much are they giving for Rumfuss again?"

"Two thousand gold pieces."

"I'll have to get both my brother and my friends to contribute. Promise me if I pay this you will stop chasing my brother."

"No." Great, he couldn't even trust her word. "But it is less likely. I'd rather just get double the money for nothing than do work to half." He nodded then led her to the treasure chamber. She took her share of coins then left without saying a word, her perfect wavy hair hanging waist length. It took Worthy a minute to realise that she was actually leaving. He snuck after her, folowing just to make sure.

After a few days Worthy ran out of food. He was about to return to Trunswick when he heard a clash of swords. Jey kicked someone to the ground. It was another woman, she looked Amayan.

"Ok, ok, you win. I just needed to find another human. I didn't expect this!"

"Who are you?" asked Jey.

"My name is Anya."

"Do you know her?" It took Worthy a few minutes to realize she was talking to him.

"Oh, erm, do you know King- I mean, Shane?" he replied.

"Yes. In fact, I did. I'm sorry to hear about him."

"Why are you looking for more humans?" asked Jey suspiciously.

"Because everything is broken. A new plague has taken everything" said Lan from the jungle.

"We're all that's left. We've got to go to the old Redcloaks base and deactivate the snare" said Cashi

"How do you know this?" asked Jey.

"Because of me" said Jolt. Shadow and Talon were there too. Worthy was very confused. Another older Greencloak was there.

"Great, Greencloaks" grunted Jey.

"I am Ambassador Ying. I would like to inform you that we are currently under threat from a new parisite, like the Wyrm, but this one spreads darkness. It's dangerous alright and we, as far as I know, are the only people left."

"The others are all dead?" asked Worthy, shocked.

"No, just asleep, but they will die if they dont wake up soon" said Nuk. It was clear that the others knew a lot more about this than Worthy was comfortable with.

"Worthy?" asked Shadow.

"Yeah?" said Worthy, snapping out his thinking trance about Dawson on the floor, dead or asleep.

"You seem...well, how do I put this? Strange."

"He is strange, that's why" said Jey. Shadow laughed and so did lots of the others.

"Hey there, little missus, you shouldn't be saying things like that, especially if you want to be on the team" said Ambassador Ying.

"Ugh, whatever."

"Hmm."

"Fine. What's the point of being rich and skilled if there's no world to rule over?"

"Not the approach I'd take but it will do" said Shanta. "Now let's go. Where's your old base?"

"You know the way to a secret base!?" asked Stead.

"A sacred secret base" said Jolt with sadness in his voice.

"Of course. It's where my dad and the only competition for being my dad's favourite died. An epic place, don't you think?"

"You think it's a happy place!?" Every Redcloak looked outright raging. She held up her hands, smiling a shy smile, and shook her head.

"I'm sorry" she said with a laugh, then ran ahead. "You don't want to be left behind!" she called. Worthy turned to Jolt, Talon and Shadow, then he cried. Jolt jumped back. Talon draped an arm around him and muttered some calming words to him. Shadow, who was crying too, hugged Worthy. King was big and not to be joked about. They reluctantly followed Jey after they'd stopped crying.

"Jey?" asked Shadow.

"Yeah."

"You know that's not cool what you did back there."

"Well, obviously it's cool, everything I do is cool."

"King was more than a great boy."

"He was stealing my spotlight!"

"So what!"

"So yeah. Look, girl, I'd say I'm sorry but..." She shrugged. "Hey look, water, the sea. We must be near. Yeah!"

"We need a boat."

"I'm still lost" said Worthy

"We're near Trunswick."

"No, lost as in the plan."

"Oh, right. A sickness is coming around, we need to reuturn the bonds to normal or else it will take the whole world" explained Lan, so the group borded the nearest boat and set sail.

It took about a day to get to there destination but when they got there it was in a worse condition than they'd left it. Worthy was still wondering how Lan, Nuk, Rona, Cashi and Shanta were here, who Ambassador Ying was and who Anya was. She certainly wasn't a Greencloak but she was chatting to Lan as if the two were friends.

"We need torches to keep warm and see" stated Jey. Then she collected a small ball of hard mud. She dipped her hand in the water then soaked a spiral pattern on the mud.

"Well, that's not going to help" said Nuk.

"Well obviously. Come on, I need fire." She eventually found a river of lava and pulled some black liquid out of her pocket. She dipped her fingertips into it then dipped them into the lava. Her fingers burst alight. Cashi and Talon both screamed and everyone jumped back. Worthy didn't trust her after the King comment but he had to admit this was pretty cool. She ran her hand over the ball of earth in a quick spiral shape and all the dry earth caught alight. She then plunged her fingers into the snow to stop the burning and was left with a burning spiral which she appeared to be holding. She led the way inside. The Greencloaks stayed guard outside with Anya since there was double the danger inside and the Redcloaks knew this place well. Jey had insisted on entering. They found the bell.

"So all we need to do is ring it?" said Talon.

"I don't like this place" said Shadow, sinking to the floor. Worthy and Jolt both crouched beside her. She was shaking violently. Then a sudden memory flashed through Worthy's mind: Shadow screaming as she was almost killed. He squeezed her hand.

"Do you want to leave?" asked Jolt. Shadow nodded. Talon and Jey were already halfway up to getting to the bell.

"You stay with them. Help Talon, I'll get her outside" said Jolt.

"Oh, erm, ok" said Worthy, already running to help Talon and keep an eye on Jey. When he reached the top the two girls were getting ready to strike the bell. The three of them hit it hard. Talon and Worthy kicked it while Jey jumped up and backflipped, landing on the bell, striking it at the same time as the others. She catapulted off and landed gracefully just behind Worthy and Talon.

"So that's it?" asked Talon.

"I think so."

"Duh, do you know nothing?" said Jey, a smile in her pale lips.

"Hey, I know some things!" complained Talon.

"I know you do, but Worthy..." She smiled and descended the tower.

On the way home they needed entertainment so Jey shared a song she'd written one night with them.

Everyone seemed surprised by the pale girl's skill but then again she was raised by Zerif. He'd have needed into a singing competition or something at some point. But one night worthy was awoken by screaming. He ran up on deck to see Rona and Jolt. He looked up to see Jey sanding on the edge of the boat. She saluted him and with a smile, let herself fall backwards off into the ocean. Worthy ran to the edge of the boat and peered over the railing, only to see her swimming towards a raft piled high with food and weapons. Then he turned his attention on Jolt.

"You...you ok?"

"Erm, Worthy, can you explain exactly how love feels?"

"Jolt, you don't..."

"Sorry, man, I've never seen a girl with such beautiful hair."

"Jolt, snap out of it!"

"Huh?"

"Jolt!"

"I miss her."

"Jolt, for the last time, she is evil!"

"Beautifully evil."

"If you wouldn't die I'd push you over the side of the boat."

"But-"

"Stop."

"I don't tell you to do that."

"Yeah, but I don't have a crush on someone who wants to kill me!"

"Ok, ok. At least the bond is safe and people are ok."

"Yeah, at least."

"Hey boys, what you talking about?" said Shadow, coming up next to Worthy.

"Jolt has a crush on Jey!" Shadow burst out laughing.

"Did you just say-?" she started but her words were lost in laughter.

"I heard that" said Talon. Jolt facepalmed.

"You ok?" asked Shadow as Talon put an arm around him.

"You mean this all in good fun, right?" he asked.

"Of course we do" said Talon softly. Jolt put an arm around her and one around Worthy. Worthy put an arm around Shadow and the four friends hugged close, holding eachother tight. Then Nuk came up behind them. He tapped Shadow on the shoulder.

"Hey" he said

"Huh? Nuk, how are you?" she replied. Worthy spotted Rona and Lan watching. Pip, who didn't like water, was in passive state on Rona's foot but Storm was out; she was hardly away and the snow leopard was glaring at them with her blue eyes. It reminded Worthy of Briggan the day he'd first met the wolf. That was a day he didn't like to dwell on. Cashi and Shanta were talking to Anya and Ambassador Ying, exchanging stories and jokes.

"So" said Shadow. It took Worthy a minute to realise she was talking to him.

"Huh, yeah?"

"Nuk wants to know, how would you describe me?"

"Kind" said Worthy. Nuk nodded and smiled at Shadow. "Pretty good at fighting, bad jokes."

"Not as bad as yours, man" interrupted Jolt.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever." He turned to Nuk. "And brave. Really brave."

"How? What makes her so brave?"

"Yesterday we were in the place she almost died, but she didn't let it stop her with the mission. Jolt took her out and all was fine."

"Are you ok after that?" asked Nuk.

"Oh yeah, I'm fine" she said as they walked off.

That night Worthy stood by the edge of the boat, gripping it tight so his knuckles were white.

"Worthy?" asked a familiar voice from behind him. Worthy didn't look up as she came round and stood beside him. Then he felt her slip her fingers into his.

"Shadow?" he asked, confused.

"Worthy, I'm still scared."

"Why didn't you say?"

"I-I didn't think anyone would understand."

"I understand."

"As I thought." She smiled and gripped his hand tighter.

"Do you want me to fetch Talon or Nuk?" asked Worthy.

"No" said Shadow, "I was hoping for quiet. You're enough interruption."

"Oh, well thanks for that."

"You're welcome" she smiled. "However I am glad to have you here. I need to talk to someone."

"Are you mad at what Jolt said?"

"No, you?"

"Yes I am. She is evil, Shadow."

"She is strange, I'll give you that, but I wouldn't say evil."

"Am I the only one who can see through her beauty?" wondered Worthy aloud.

"No Worthy, I can too, but it's better to be on the good side of her than the bad. I'll tell you a secret."

"What?"

"I like you more than her." Worthy blushed.

"Really?"

"You guys are my real friends. Of course really." She smiled and a hint of mischief showed in her eyes. "Worthy" she said, looking into his eyes. "I promise I will be there for you."

"Hey, that's my song!"

"Of course it is" she said. Then they stared into the stars, the water crashing around them, the full moon shining down on them hand in hand. They watched for what felt like an eternity before Shadow finally fell asleep, falling into Worthy's arms. He brought her to her room as quietly as possible and lay her in her bed, before going to his room and falling onto the bed and into sleep.
