Author's Note & Accolades
Welcome, welcome! This was my first-ever successful NaNoWriMo project, and I'm so excited to share it with you guys. Expect some politicking, some pseudoscience, and an adorable thief boy. Also beware that this is a only a second-ish draft, so I'm all ears if you have criticism. Tear me to shreds or cheer on my heroes. I take both. xD

⫸⫸ RECOMMENDATIONS ⫷⫷
"The way you swoop us into this world and just drop us in it COULD have been confusing. Especially for someone like me who never reads sci-fi, but honestly, I felt like I was already part of the world . . . M'yu is such a three dimensional character and I'm rooting for him."
- Alex Orchard (MiniMoxx),
Traditionally Published Author
and Wattpad Creator
"I LOVE THIS STORY! How this doesn't have more reads is a mystery to me because this is just so good. The world-building, the story, the characters, it's just perfect."
- Amelia Harper (Spruce_Goose),
Watty's 2022 Shortlister
and Wattpad Ambassador
"[Y]our overall creativity and imagination when selecting names, personality traits, plot devices, motivations, and descriptive scenes is very refreshing and allows readers who may not even enjoy sci-fi or action to indulge . . . M'yu especially is so well-rounded as a character it's easy to slip into the story and get lost in his worldview . . . I wish more dystopian novels had the pace and liveliness that your book does."
- Aurora Languor (auroralanguor)
"I was awestruck when I read how beautifully you crafted each and every word and described it to present a detailed and authentic image for your readers."
- The Phoenix Awards 2023 (Abhi_Awards)
"Her subtle world-building is pure genius . . . Definitely one of the most captivating books I've ever read... I loved everything about it—the characters, the imagery, the storyline, the secrets, the suspense... It's emotional, amusing, imaginative, and just downright clever. Yup, this book is a definite must-read."
- Carmi Philander (Read-aholic2006)
"There were so many instances where I was filled with so much anxiety, I couldn't even stop and comment, I was literally on the edge of my couch."
- by Imogen (imogenogucci01)
"One word to describe this book: Mind-blowing... Although I do crave more (I can't believe it's over!), I must say that the ending is extremely satisfying . . . The way you weave the worldbuilding with the character development is spectacular. The characters were complex and realistic. M'yu was flawed, but that made him an even more realistic protagonist . . . This book is probably one of the best Wattpad books I've ever read, and I literally stayed up just to finish several chapters! Don't worry Laine, it was worth it. I will be waiting for it to get published and see if I can snap a copy."
- The Word Artist (TheWordArtistBooks)
" Such a thought provoking story! I love the themes and philosophical side . . ."
- Kehleigh (MusicalKehleigh)
ONC Honorable Mention and Shortlister
"I am not much into dystopians and science fictions stories, but I decided to give The Right to Die a try . . . After reading the second chapter, I found myself drawn to M'yu's narrative and wanting to know more about his world. If you are looking for a book that is well written and has interesting character dynamics, look no further."
- Crystal Thiel (crystalthiel_)
"The plot is spectacular and keeps me on my toes. You had an excellent hook, but it felt like the whole story was the hook. That's how good this is."
- Brooke Bowman (brooke_bowman3821)
"[I]mmersive and well-described . . . I love the science-fantasy mixture."
- GiMi May (lookinprettyGrim)
Aster Awards 2023 judge
"[I]mpeccable writing style . . . [R]eaders dive into this world which is a perfect blend of fantasy and sci-fi."
- Celestia (bowdownpeasantz)
Pawesome Awards 2023 judge
"In 30 thrilling chapters, you'll get to follow the journey of a young revolutionary, thief, and hacker swept into a world of upper-class infighting and political maneuvering. Torn from his street-smart allies, can he leverage this new situation to his advantage, bring the innocent up and the powerful down?"
- Y.I. Turner (flamesword01)
"The plot, descriptions, writing style, characters, grammar; each and every segment was written fabulously."
- Kinal Hariya (kinalhariya)
Self-Published Author
and Hibiscus Awards 2023 judge
"Who doesn't love a cheeky Robin Hood — whether it's in medieval England or [a] futuristic dystopia? The sci-fi codebreaking, the magical witchcandy, and the thrill of a cause higher than individualistic abandon all placed in a world that is so rich with its own history — fill the novel with grit unparalleled. From the start, I was stuck to the plot like a magnet to iron, refusing to let even a single word go amiss. I loved M'yu's dialogue no matter what scene he was in, and the quality sustained a high throughout the book and even with the other characters. But soon the threat of death becomes quite real and the tragedies that follow make you question everything . . . This novel has one of the best, no-loose-threads conclusions I've read on this platform. It was an amazing read from the first page to the last.
- Gauravaaditya Kulkarni (Gauravaaditya),
Wattpad Ambassador
and Hidden Treasure Awards judge
"The vocabulary was superb . . . Not only do we get amazing vocabulary used in the proper context for a YA novel, but there are also many instances of slang, vernacular, and cultural references in M'yu's world . . . The vocabulary is part of what makes this world so immersive. [It] helps to subtly build the world that Laine has crafted. [The book] is really enjoyable and imaginative despite the dark social issues that drive the story."
- Adrielle Reina (AdrielleReina)
Wattys Bootcamp Graduate
and Hidden Treasure Awards judge
"Whoa, that was one wild ride! ❤❤ This whole story is like, a masterpiece! The characters, worldbuilding, heart and action all packed in neat and tight. And everything fit together so well! So much thought put into the social system and tech and the beautiful visuals! They should totally make a movie out of this!"
- Su Vida (SuVida777),
Wattpad Ambassador & Creator,
Wattys Shortlister & Ambys Winner
"Your writing is superb. You have this wonderful balance between witty dialogue, beautiful descriptions that aren't too dense, and quick-paced action that feels meaningful throughout the story . . . I was made to feel and, more importantly, I was made to think—that takes clever, meaningful writing."
