Fallen - Voyagers AU Oneshot
A boy sat quietly, brushing sand off of his anchor. He watched as its etchings glowed, pulsing in a pretty golden color. He was a demigod, but he wasn't really so sure he needed to be one.
He hadn't defeated a legendary beast, he hadn't brought forth a new natural phenomenon...he was useless as of yet, and he hated it. The young demigod let out a sigh, muttering something to himself about how he needed to get his name out there...get known, become loved. Little did he know that the ocean would heed his call.
That very same night, a lone raft crashed up on the rocky shore. Its only passenger lie still, unconscious and bleeding. Her black hair cut short by the sharp stones, dark skin wet with the saltwater and her own blood.
With dawn came curiosity for both. The young woman glanced at her surroundings, and then assessed herself, only to cry out as she realized that her arm and both legs were badly injured. Her voice was weak and scared, but the boy heard it in an instant.
He followed her cries, adrenaline helping him to carry his otherwise too-heavy-to-do-anything-with anchor over to her. As he met her gaze, she grew a little fearful, recognizing his tool.
"...d-don't worry, I can help you," he said gently, kneeling down beside her. The demigod gently laid the broad, flat side of the anchor on one of her legs and its etchings glimmered with a healing gold light. She watched silently, in awe at his gentleness and power.
"Th-thank you..." the girl murmured as the last of the light ebbed away.
The boy nodded, smiling brightly. "You're welcome. Name's Hau, by the way."
His adorable grin was contagious. "I'm Mahina," she added, beaming herself.
The poor demigod was overwhelmed by the happiness he had given this pretty mortal girl. "A beautiful name... You're a moonchild, aren't you?"
"I...I think so? My parents used to tell me I was born of starstuffs and moondust...though I'm not really sure."
Hau just smiled. "Well, if I can have any say in it, I'd say you're a wonderful moongirl."
Either the poor boy was drunk on love or he was just plain stupid. Common sense had left him almost entirely. As much as he wanted to believe she was the demigoddess of the moon, she wasn't - she was just a regular mortal girl born beneath the full moon.
She blushed, silently admiring her savior.
Though he wasn't exactly muscular, he had a sort of charm to him, a hint of strength deep within. His skin was the color of ground cinnamon...and in all truths, he sort of smelt that way, too. Hau's sweet silver eyes melted whatever coldness remained in her heart; he was just too kind. The demigod's curly black hair hung down just past his shoulders, shimmering a little in the sunlight.
He let out a small sigh. "...but you should probably get going. I bet your people are worried sick about you."
"About me? A girl who can't sail for her life?" she asked, dumbfounded.
"Well, when you put it that way, of course they would be."
"...they probably think I'm dead now, anyways. Why can't I stay here with you?"
He shrugged. "I dunno...I just thought you might want to get back to your family and friends... Y'know, people that care..."
Mahina grew concerned, resting a hand on his shoulder. "Come on, Hau...you care, don't you?"
"I...I do, I just...I know how you humans are. You get your help and then you wanna go back to your families... Nobody ever considers the other guy..." he muttered.
"Hau..."
He got up, shaking his head. "...go on, be a mortal and go run to your family. They're worried sick about you, whether they think you're dead or not," Hau said, his back to her.
"My boat's broke. I don't make boats...I don't fix them. I made baskets and sometimes a fish trap or two. I've never made a boat in my life."
He chuckled lightly, turning around. "Looks like you're stuck with me, then."
"I think you're right," Mahina agreed, smiling brightly.
Maybe he'd have a chance to redeem himself, a chance to truly become a hero. He'd finally get his wish...and maybe something else, too.
