Chapter 14. Battle Plans

Well, shoot. I officially do not like school work. It gets in the way of writing fan fictions.

I don't own anything.

Cassian's P.O.V.

"How are you alive?" I demand as I hug K2. "I thought you had died for good!"

"How are you alive?" The droid retorts. "I'm fairly sure we came here the same way."

Baze speaks up. "Actually K2's parts came through the portal with me. I just had to assemble him."

"And being the technician he is, Baze downgraded K2's joints!" Chirrut chimes. Chirrut doesn't see the glare he earns from Baze.

Bodhi skips forwards and starts looking at K2's joints. "Nothing I can't fix," he said. "So long as K2 is okay with it." The droid nods lets Bodhi fix him up.

While Bodhi works, I spend some time introducing Orson and Lyra to Chirrut and Baze. It's amazing that Chirrut is so willing to trust Orson and Lyra quickly. I think he trusts them more in a few minutes than I trust them currently. Baze is a little on the skeptical side.

We then get around to discussing the clue we found from Galen and have Bodhi read the note out loud. "Krysilos, Balwen and Scarif," Chirrut repeats. "I have been to Scarif but not Balwen. And where is Krysilos?"

"You're standing on Krysilos currently," says Baze. "I know some of our Rebel friends visited Balwen. They said the Empire forces have been gathering there for a while. Probably not a good sign. And Scarif is nonexistent in the Galaxy of the Dead."

"I think Galen was out of his mind," said K2. "Otherwise he would have wrote something more useful to us."

Lyra growls. "Galen wrote the clue for a reason. He had a gift of being able to see into the future and could often direct things his way."

"If that's the case, then we just have to play his game in order to make things work out for the better," Orson says.

"What game?!" Baze demands. "We barely have any leads."

"You mean besides visiting Balwen," I correct. "Somehow, that leads to getting on Scarif."

We talk back and forth until we bore our brains out. K2 suggests we spar against each other. We draw grass pieces to determine our matches. Bodhi and Lyra get the longest two, Chirrut and Baze (who are considered as one for reasons) are against K2 and I'm paired up against Orson.

Lyra and Bodhi go first. While they fight, I think about what happened last night. I know Bodhi reaaalllyy likes me and while I don't share the same deep feelings for him, I do care for him greatly. I'm not sure why I chose to kiss him as a way to calm him down. Perhaps I was overtired and not thinking straight. But something deep inside my conscience tells me that I'm just making up an excuse.

I look over at Baze and Chirrut. The two are playing rock, ship, saber. Chirrut is somehow cheating and always winning against Baze. Either that or Baze knows what Chirrut's going to play and is losing on purpose. K2 is entertained by the game and plays some rounds himself.

I change my view and fix my eyes on Orson, who's fingering the Kyber crystal and watching Lyra and Bodhi. I wonder what he thinks of being on this team. Does he feel like he's forced to become our ally? Is he planning something against us? How does he see each individual? I must have been staring too long because Orson turns my way and frowns. "What is it?"

I want to ask him everything that my mind has been curious about. But instead I say "Nothing." Orson shrugs and goes back to watching the fight. I follow his line of sight and see Lyra on the ground with Bodhi holding his staff against her chest. Gumdrop is at his feet.

"Not fair!" Lyra cries. "I would have won if your dog didn't come over and trip me!"

"Gumdrop is on my team, meaning that you lost fair and square," Bodhi replies with a smug smile. Lyra sighs and admits defeat. She and Bodhi are replaced with Chirrut, Baze and K2.

This fight is interesting to watch. Chirrut doesn't have his staff and Baze is holding some sort of baton. Both go all out on K2 yet no matter how hard they try, the droid refuses to budge. Finally K2 grabs them both by the collar and toss them to the ground. "Haha!" The droid snorts. "I win! You lose!" I wonder why Chirrut isn't using his staff. And shouldn't Baze have his machine gun, or some alternative that wouldn't harm K2? Something's off and I don't like it...

Orson and I go next. Where Orson lacks skill in handling a staff, he makes up with his wide variety of knowledge in martial arts. We're almost equally matched but as the spar carries out for several minutes, I realize that I'm on the losing side. I can hear my friends rooting for me. Normally, I don't like being cheered on, however, I was enjoying the encouragement now. I put every muscle I could into defeating Orson.

In the end, I lost when Orson knocked the ground from under my feet with his staff. The two of us were bruised just about everywhere and we earned a scolding from Lyra. "Are you trying to kill each other?!"

"For the record, you can't die in Myertos," Orson answers.

"Muertos," I correct. Orson tries to say it but fails. I sigh and let him call it whatever he pleases.

Lyra sighs exasperatedly. "I don't care, Orson Krennic. Just because you can't die in this realm doesn't mean you can't hurt someone. I'd very much like both of you functional and non-paralyzed when we have to find my shush and and daughter."

Orson sighs. "Lyra, Lyra, you shouldn't worry so much."

"Don't Lyra Lyra me." It's then that I notice she and Bodhi had absolutely no bruises. Baze and Chirrut had earned slight injuries and K2 had a few dents. Obviously, we can tell who had the cleanest fight.

After Lyra tends to our wounds, Orson and I follows the others to the area where K2, Baze and Chirrut kept in contact with parts of the Rebellion. Bodhi squeals with delight when he saw the electronics. I don't think I've seen anyone become so energetic over electronics and K2 agreed with me by mimicking Bodhi until he's hit over the head with Bodhi's staff.

Baze manages to contact some of our Rebellion friends, Malik Nyr and Ryln Yekkard, who are on Balwen. "How's the Empire look?" Baze asks.

"Empirish," said Malik. "They've been building some circular rim that can support a portal. We think it's a shortcut to another portal. Either way, it's freaky dangerous."

"That's not good," I say. "If it puts this realm to a risk, we don't have anywhere else to go. Our lives, or ghost lives, are at risk."

Chirrut nods. "Perhaps you should stop them."

I shake my head, then realize Chirrut wasn't able to see that. "No, I can't stop them alone. We're going to stop the Empire together, as the New Rogue One."

Orson looks shocked. "Really? Huh, guess that placebo really worked. So you're not traumatized from the crossover anymore?

"Whatever the heck you're talking about, I still have flashbacks. But I suppose I should get over them and continue to work and find Jyn."

K2 cocks his head. "You are full of surprises, Captain." I don't listen to him. I'm worried that we're getting into something deeper than we all bargained for. Orson suggests we storm the facility and shut down everything and I think that's a brilliant plan.

We talk back and forth with Malik and Ryln about the layout of the facility. Sketches of the base are drawn up in the sand and we begin to plan on how to get inside. Orson does most of the planning, surprisingly. "The Empire isn't big into change. The stormtrooper guards shouldn't be too much different from their other guarding configurations." He predicts any of the guard shifts and we relay the information to Malik and Ryln, who keep an eye on the base to see if he's right.

We work until we feel like our limbs are about to fall off. When we're done, I shut off the com and sigh. I feel as though we are taking a big step towards defeating the Empire for good. Maybe we'll be able to find Jyn and Galen this way as well.

I stand up and look at the New Rogue One. "Jyn was our last leader. We'll need another leader who can call the shots for us."

Bodhi frowns. "I thought you were the leader?"

"No, I was the second in command."

Orson sighs. "We should make you the leader then, Cassian."

I shake my head. "Team work is not my strength."

"Yes, you are actually terrible at teamwork," K2 says brightly.

I ignore him. "We need someone who can lead all of us." I scan the six rebels in front of me. "Bodhi? Chirrut? Lyra? How are you with commanding teams?"

Bodhi looks down sheepishly and Lyra shrugs. Chirrut shakes his head. "I don't want to fight."

"Neither do I," says Baze and I think he's just saying that because Chirrut did.

"Well I want to fight," said K2. "And why can't I be the leader?"

"Because you're too sarcastic," Orson says. K2 takes a step towards the former officer. "Okay! Okay! So you're not that bad. Still, it has to be a group decision on who should be the leader.

I turn to Chirrut and Baze. "Why not?" I ask them.

Baze and Chirrut talk among themselves. Eventually Baze turns to face all of us and says quietly "We had a hell of a time crossing over here..."

"So did everyone else," said Bodhi. "We're going to be okay."

"You don't understand. We can't fight. We killed too many people in our trial and now touching our weapons only brings back terrifying memories."

"You mean to say that you can fight anymore?" Lyra asks. "Why!?"

Baze and Chirrut are about to tell us when we get a call back from Ryln. "Guys! The Empire made some sort of pellet blaster shot and it can kill ghosts! We just saw them use it on a legion of stormtroopers!"
========================================
Oh man, what is going on?! What is the Empire doing? Will K2 lead the New Rogue One crew? What happened to Chirrut and Baze?
