Chapter four: Letters and discoveries

AN: Wow, eighty two reads already?! This is so great! Thanks everypony! So, I'm having a little bit of writers block but I'll pull through. I don't own the picture above! See you at the end of the chapter!

"It's just a fascinating read." Said Twilight Sparkle. "You'd love it Starlight."

"It really does sound interesting." Starlight Glimmer responded.

"Twilight." Spike broke in. "Sorry to interrupt, but this just came for you."

Spike held a scroll of parchment and extended his claw to Twilight. Twilight's magenta magic aura then surrounded it. She unrolled the parchment and began to read. Starlight and Spike watched as her violet eyes flew across the paper.

Dear Twilight Sparkle,

Luna and I have come across a book that will undoubtedly aid in our efforts to rid Equestria of King Sombra. After searching the royal library we came across the book. It's titled 'The Elements of Wilderness: a reference guide.' It appears to be even older than the book containing the information on the Elements of Harmony. On account of being very busy with royal duties, Luna and I haven't had time to go through the book ourselves. Therefore I'm making arrangements for the book to be delivered to you as soon as possible. I'm sure you're busy with the possible bearer of the ice element, but Luna and I would greatly appreciate you reading through it. The two of us will continue to be on the lookout for possible bearers here in Canterlot. I will contact you if we find anything else.

Sincerely, Princess Celestia

"What does it say?" Starlight asked after a few moments.

"Princess Celestia says that she and Luna have found more information on the other elements." Twilight answered.

"That's great!" Said Spike.

"She says she's having the book sent here for me to read and that she and Luna are on the lookout for other bearers."

"Do you want me to take a letter to send to her?"

"I think I'll get this one myself, Spike. But thanks."

Twilight walked out the throne room, through the hallway and eventually into the library. She shut the doors behind her with her magic before sitting down at her desk to take a letter. Her magic magenta aura surrounded a quill and she dipped its tip in an inkpot then began to write a letter to Princess Celestia.

Dear Princess Celestia,

I'm excited to report that I strongly believe Winter Frost is in fact the bearer of the ice element. However, she isn't a natural born leader. It may take a while for her to realize just how much potential she has, especially given her past. But I am confident that she can help us take down King Sombra once and for all. I'll let you know when the book is safely in my possession, along with any important information I might find.

Sincerely, Twilight Sparkle

After looking over the letter, Twilight placed the quill into inkpot and rolled up the letter with her magic. She then fluttered out of her chair and flew back into the throne room where Spike and Starlight Glimmer were waiting. The two had been conversing when Twilight flew in. She descended back to the ground and then trotted over to Spike.

"Spike, please send this letter to Princess Celestia at once." Twilight commanded, releasing the letter from her magic's hold.

"Sure thing." Spike responded holding the letter up before breathing fire onto it.

The letter caught fire as it started to smoke and with a trail of sparkles it eventually disappeared.

......

Whirlwind fidgeted in her chair and stretched out her purple gray wings as she watched Winter move her chess piece to the desired location.

"So, how was lunch yesterday?" Whirlwind asked, looking over the game board.

"It was really good!" Winter beamed. "Everypony was so easy to talk to!"

Whirlwind looked up from the board to look at the light blue, grinning alicorn across from her.

"It wasn't awkward at all?" Whirlwind questioned curiously, raising an eyebrow.

"Well, yeah at first. But after a while not so much."

"That's great, Winter."

Whirlwind looked back down and slid her castle forward. She was glad Winter had enjoyed herself. Especially since she was the only pony Winter usually hung out with. But to be honest, Whirlwind didn't blame Winter for not wanting to hang around other ponies. What those mean little fillies and colts did to her back when they were younger wasn't right. And she was a new student too...

"King me." Winter Frost stated happily.

Whirlwind snapped her head back up to look at Winter. Whirlwind's magenta eyes were wide with shock as she looked back down to the chess board. How had she beaten her?!

"What?! How did you-"

Winter had a triumphant look on her face as Whirlwind sat across from her in shock. Winter knew all too well that the pegasus before her didn't like losing. She wasn't exactly a sore loser... but wining was certainly important to her.

"Aw come on!" Whirlwind exclaimed. "Rematch?"

"No way! I won fair and square." Winter said defensively.

"But-"

"Race you to Ponyville!"

Winter the sprung out of her chair and flew right through the cloud walls of Whirlwind's house. Whirlwind took off after her, speeding towards her best friend.

"Hey! No fair!" Whirlwind called to Winter.

The two ponies zoomed to the ground, drawing nearer and nearer to Ponyville. Soon Whirlwind had caught up to Winter, who was starting to grow tired. Whirlwind passed by the alicorn with little effort and touched down on the ground a good amount of time before Winter did. After about a minute or so, the exhausted alicorn landed next to Whirlwind, who was now hovering just above the ground. Winter collapsed on the ground breathing heavily.

"Aw come on don't be like that!" Said Whirlwind. "You even got a head start and your wings are bigger!"

"But you fly more often than I do, and you can manipulate the air around you for Celestia's sake!" Winter panted. "And you don't even have a horn to do the magic!"

"Okay, I guess that's fair." Whirlwind shrugged. "So... wanna go again?"

Whirlwind looked to Winter, fluttering her wings excitedly. Winter Frost shook her head violently and Whirlwind laughed at her response. She then shook her head, rolling her eyes slightly.

"So what do you wanna do?" Whirlwind asked.

"I don't know." Winter shrugged. "What do you wanna do?"

"I don't really have any idea. We could go to sugar cube corner, go to the park-"

"Can we go to the library?" Winter Frost beamed.

"Um... the library?"

Whirlwind looked at her curiously. She knew Winter liked reading and all... but it didn't exactly sound like the best place to hang out with a friend. What could they possibly do?

"I know that doesn't sound like the most thrilling thing to do on a Sunday morning, but there's a subject I would really like to-"

Winter stopped part of the way through her sentence once she saw a specific somepony standing in the door way of her home.

"What are you looking at?" Whirlwind asked, turning to face where she was looking.

"Princess Twilight!" Winter exclaimed, looking over at the alicorn.

Twilight was talking to some royal guard ponies. There was about four or five of them at the very least. One of the pegasi guards handed her something that appeared to be a book of some kind. Then with a nod he flew away along with the other pegasus guard as the unicorn guards trotted below. After they left she spotted Winter and grinned, waving at her to come over.

"Come on, let's go say hi!" Said Winter, starting to trot to Twilight.

"Uh... I don't know..." Said Whirlwind uncertainly.

"But she's calling us over there."

"Yeah, but it's gonna be awkward."

"Please?"

"Nope."

"But... I wanna go see her." Said Winter. "You're not gonna make me go by myself... are you?"

Winter looked up at Whirlwind, silently begging her with her eyes. Whirlwind let out an exasperated sigh and rolled her eyes before looking back to her best friend.

"Fine." Whirlwind gave in. "I guess we can't decline an invite from a Princess."

The two then began to make their way up the steps of the castle as Twilight turned and called into the empty hallways of the castle.

"Spike!" Twilight cried. "I need you!"

The little purple and green baby dragon rushed into the room with a comic book rolled up in his claw. He clenched it tightly as he came to a stop next to Twilight.

"What?!" Spiked whined. "I was in the middle of a really great scene! The power ponies-"

"No time for this Spike! I'm sorry, but I need you to put this book in my room before they see it!" Twilight exclaimed, speaking quickly. "I'll explain later I promise."

"Uh, okay?"

"Thanks!" Twilight thanked, using her magic to shove the levitating book into Spike's tiny claws.

Spike grasped the book and started walking down the hallway, lugging the book along. Just as he took off Winter and Whirlwind were beside Twilight.

"Hey, Winter." Twilight greeted cheerfully.

"Morning Twilight." Winter smiled.

"Please come in." Twilight offered, stepping aside slightly. "Both of you."

Twilight Sparkle looked at the two ponies before her and after chatting with Winter Frost for a few moments turned her attention to the purple gray pegasus with an untidy white mane that had a thick line of gray running through it.

"I don't believe we've met." Said Twilight, turning to Whirlwind. "I'm Twilight Sparkle, the Princess of friendship. But you can call me Twilight. What's your name?"

"The name's Whirlwind." Whirlwind answered. "I'm Winter's best friend."

"Well it's nice to meet you. Any friend of Winter's is a friend of mine."

"Nice to meet ya too."

"Twilight, Spike said he put the book in your room." Starlight told, walking over to Twilight.

"Hi Starlight!" Winter Frost called, waving at the light pink unicorn.

"Oh hi Winter!" Starlight greeted.

Whirlwind raised an eyebrow and leaned over to Winter.

"Uh, who in the hoof is that?" Whirlwind whispered.

"That's Starlight Glimmer. She's Twilight's protégé." Winter replied.

"Do you know everypony?!"

"Not everypony." Winter said, rolling her eyes. "But I did meet Twilight's friends."

"Sweet Celestia. I missed a lot."

Winter laughed then smiled slightly, looking at Twilight and Starlight.

"Yeah..." Winter trailed off. "I guess you did."

After a short while of the four ponies talking together Twilight invited them inside and they sat around a table together. At first the conversation was a bit slow. They spoke mostly of the weather and some goings on in Ponyville, but after some more conversation the mares were soon laughing as they traded stories.

"Then they named her Flurry Heart, after everything that happened that day." Twilight surmised.

"You're kidding right?!" Whirlwind exclaimed in total disbelief.

"Nope, not kidding." Twilight chuckled. "They wanted to remember the occasion."

"I don't think anypony could forget that." Winter commented.

"I know I sure won't." Starlight added, blushing slightly.

"Oh right, that was also the first time you saw Sunburst after all those years." Twilight said with a nod in Starlight's direction.

"Uh..." Starlight trailed off, blushing even more. "Yeah."

"Sunburst is pretty important to the Crystal Empire. Especially now that he's a crystaler."

"Definitely. We've been sending letters and he's been telling me all about it."

"And with his skills set, he's probably busy all the time."

"Yeah... he is. But he still makes time to write." Starlight admitted, smiling.

"You said he went to Celestia's school for gifted unicorns?" Whirlwind asked.

"Yes, his parents sent him when we were foals." Starlight answered. "I always knew he would get his Cutie Mark in magic."

Twilight's gaze shifted over to Whirlwind, and fell onto her flank. Twilight raised an eyebrow as she looked at the cutie mark. It appeared to be a gust of wind with a gray cloud behind it. The lightly colored cutie mark stood out on her purple gray coat. Twilight squinted, wondering if her eyes deceived her or not.

"Um, Whirlwind?" Twilight spoke up.

"Yeah?" Whirlwind prompted, turning her attention to Twilight Sparkle.

"That's an interesting cutie mark you've got there." Twilight stated.

"Uh..." Whirlwind trailed off and looked at her flank before turning back to Twilight. "Yeah, I guess it is."

"How did you get it? I've never seen anything like it."

"I'll spare you the long story, but I got it when I won a race and realized that I can manipulate the air around me."

"You can manipulate air?" Starlight broke in.

"Yeah. And not just when I fly."

"Really?"

"Yeah. I would say it's magic but I don't have a horn."

"Wait..." Said Twilight. "Are you saying you can control air... without using your wings?"

"Well, yeah." Whirlwind answered. "It's like the air does my bidding. Whether I use my wings or not."

Twilight sat there, her head spinning as she processed it all. A special talent like that was unheard of! And if what she was thinking was right she had just found another bearer! With any luck, Twilight had two down and four to go.

After a swift change of subject the ponies continued talking normally. But Twilight wasn't quite as engaged this time. Now her mind was focused on the possible bearers. She figured that Whirlwind must be the air element. It was the only logical explanation. Even as she and Starlight we're waving goodbye to Winter Frost and Whirlwind, Twilight still thought about the elements. She couldn't wait to let the others know of the good news. Oh, how excited her brother and the Princesses would be once they get word of her discovery!
