Chapter fourteen

I had been over a month now. The Valentines Day dance was coming up. I saw Jamal at school and we walked together. "So, the dance is coming up." I said to him and he looked at me.

"Are we going together? Is that what your about to say?"  He asked me and I looked at him with a smile.

"Yeah, it was." I said yo him and he looked me with a smile.

"Let's go together. It'll be fun." He said to me and I looked at him with a smile.

"Let me get our tickets." I said to him with a smile and I headed on my way. That's when I saw Jasmine.

"Hey, Y/n. You'll never guess what." She said to me and I looked at her confusedly.

"What?" I asked her and she looked at me. With a smile.

"I found some people that want to take Ruby to the dance tomorrow." She said to me and it was my turn to buy the tickets.

"Two tickets please." I said to the person selling them and gave the money to them. "How many did you even find?" I asked Jasmine and she looked at me.

"Ten." She said with a smile. That's when I was handed my tickets.

"Thank you." I said to them and then looked back at Jasmine.

"Will you be a judge for me. I need another girl." She said and I looked at her with a smile on my face. I then shook my head.

"I wish I could. But I've got somewhere else to be. Maybe Monse can do it." I said to her and then I walked away. The next time I saw Jamal was during lunch break.

"Did you get the tickets?" He asked me and I looked at him and nodded.

"Yeah, two tickets for the dance tomorrow." I said to him and I gave him one of the tickets.

"You know, I love living with your brother." He said to me and I looked at him. I'd heard what Cesar had been saying. It was the complete opposite.

"Oh, really?" I asked him and he looked at me and nodded.

"Yeah, I like having a brother. I can see why you like having Cesar and Oscar around." He said to me and I was feeling bad. When school finished I went home and looked in my closet. That's when I saw the perfect dress. It was red, it was much but it was good enough. I heard a knock on my door.

"Mana, dinner's ready." Oscar said to me and I opened my door.

"Well, I'm ready." I said to him and we walked to the table.

"Are you going to the dance tomorrow?" He asked me and I looked at him and nodded.

"Yeah, why?" I asked him and he shook his head.

"No reason. Are you walking home or do you want me to pick you up?" He asked me and I looked at him.

"I'll be fine walking but thank you. I'll call you if anything happens." I said to him and he gave me a plate. "This looks really good." I said to him with a smile and I started tucking in. When the dance came around I saw Jamal.

"Don't kill me." He said to me and I looked at him.

"Why would I do that?" I asked him and he took both my hands.

"There's been a change of plans. I'm chaperoning now." He said to me and I looked away and looked back at him.

"So we can't even dance together. God, this is gonna suck." I said to him and he looked at me.

"I'm just doing what I have to do to pay my debts." He said to me and that's when the two of us headed inside. I was mainly dancing by myself but then Jamal came over and we went to see Cesar and the others. My eyes widened when I saw Cesar's jacket.

"Yo! Bruce looks good on you, bruh!" Jamal said to him and now I was even more in shock.

"Ugh! You named this?" Cesar asked while looking at the jacket.

"So you're to blame for this eyesore?" Ruby asked and we all kept dancing.

"Don't listen to him. He's not fashion forward." Jamal said and I looked at Cesar.

"It's awful. Sorry, Jamal." I said to him.

"When exactly did you purchase this jacket?" Ruby asked him.

"Well...back when it was my cheddar, I shredded off a little of it. But, now that it's our Gouda, I haven't sliced off a dime-sized piece of that feta!" Jamal said and I saw coach appear.

"Turner!" Coach shouted at him.

"I'm on a break, Ronald." Jamal said to him.

"There are no breaks when there are teenage boys trying to stick it in. I misplaced my phone. Check the office." Coach said and Jamal went off. That's when he saw Cesar's jacket. "I'm happy to know someone won't be sticking it in tonight. Not with that jacket." Coach said while laughing.

"Ah, signal! Ladies and gents, y'all ready to get this dance competition started?" The DJ shouted and we all cheered. Now it was time to watch everyone. It wasn't long until everything came to a stop. Coach was stood in front of us all. With Jamal.

"Someone has my phone. That same someone is the reason you are no longer having fun. This individual has five seconds to return my phone. If they return my phone before I get to five, the dance can continue. If not, the night is canceled. Now I'm gonna turn around, so I won't even know who did it. One. Two. Three! I better start heading movement. Four! Oh! Don't let me get to five. Four and a half! Five!" Coach shouted and he turned around. No one had moved.

"Cowards! All of you!" Jamal shouted at us all.

"This how you wanna play it? We can play it that way. I've got the human find-my-phone app. Jamal, do your thing." Coach said and he looked over at Jamal.

"Oh!" Jamal said and he got his phone out. He then called Coach. We heard the ringtone go off. "Oh. Oh. Oh." Jamal said and he went over to Tyrone.

"Oh, shit." Tyrone got out.

"Tyrone, my office, now! Resume the dance." Coach said and the music came on. It was time die the dance competition again.

"Thank you, Javi and Javier. Next up, everybody make som noise for The Great Jasby." The DJ said and it was time for the best performance dance of the night. Jasmine and Ruby. I was cheering the whole time. When they were done we all cheered even more. That's when they kissed and I was in shock. But they were cute together. "And we have a winner! The Great Jasby has just won a $50 gift card to...Chili's!" The DJ announced and we went went over to them.

"Oh, my god! Oh, my god! Guys, guys! If we play our cards right, we can stretch this out to two dinners. Four meals if we order off the kids menu and we don't tip. But that's up to you. We won!" Jasmine said to us all and we all celebrated. That's when I heard the song that came on.

"All right. All right. All right. Freeridge High! It's time to take it old school!" The DJ said. It was the song that played when Ruby and Olivia were shot. We looked at Ruby and saw he was having an attack. We instantly we got him out. He was sobbing.

"Just sit. Just sit." Cesar said and we all sat down. I sat in front of him. "Everything is all right. Okay? You're safe." Cesar said to him and I looked at him.

"Ruby, everything's okay. We're safe." I said to him. Jamal went someone before all of this. If only he was here.

"I'll go get him some water." Monse said and she went back in.

"What's going on?" I heard Jasmine ask worriedly.

"It's the song that was playing when they were shot." Monse said and Jasmine joined us.

"Hey, you two, go, go. I got this." Jasmine said to us and Cesar and I headed back inside. I wiped my tears away. I headed into the bathroom and just cried. I still couldn't believe that Olivia was gone. It didn't matter how many days had gone by. I still missed her. Once I stopped I headed back in again to the dance. I then saw Jamal.

"Woah, you okay?" He asked me and he saw my tears.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Just miss Olivia." I said to him and that's when Monse came in walking past us.

"Yo! What's wrong?" Jamal asked her.

"We just broke up." Monse said and I saw Cesar.

"Cesar, wait!" Jamal said and I followed after him.

"Cesar." I said to him and I followed him. Once I got to him he was crying. "Mano, come here." I said to him and I hugged him. He cried. Well this was definitely the worst dance in history.
