After the function, everyone indulges in greetings, introductions and talks of business matters or whatever benefits they get from being sociable. Evelyn has never been interested in socialising with people especially when it comes to high-status people. Whenever she attends such party as this, she will always go on the roof or balcony and stay there to avoid indulging in unwanted and stupid talks of business matter. But now the only difference is that she has friends present at this party as well.
Evelyn looked around for her friends and saw them standing in one corner, grinning widely towards her. She let out a chuckled before going towards them.
"OMG! Eve, you look stunning," Cornelia squealed cheerfully and hugged her.
Evelyn gently pulled away and noticed a new guy between them. But then she quickly recognised him, he was the guy who was with Cornelia that night.
"You're new," Evelyn said casually before adding, "And what did I miss!"
"Eve, this is Mike Chalamet- a new student of sec-C. And we two are dating," Cornelia said with a bright smile while Mike let out sheepish chuckled beside her.
"Well, that was fast," Evelyn amused raising both her eyebrows, "Anyways, congrats to both of you," She added with a smile. Then she turned her gaze towards Aaleyah and smile slyly before hugging her.
"Any progression," Evelyn whispered softly before pulling away and threw a glanced at Brian. Aaleyah gave her a pointed look before shaking her head slightly.
After some moments of talking with her friends, Evelyn excused herself and went towards Isaac who was busy sharing talks with a middle-aged man and Kevin stood silently beside them.
"Isaac," She sweetly called out to her brother drawing their attention towards them.
"Eve," Isaac smiled and extended his hand towards her, gesturing her to come and join him. Evelyn smiled and glanced at Kevin as she came beside her brother. Isaac rested his hand over her shoulder and nudged her side gently.
"Mr Coleman, this is my sister, Evelyn and Eve, this is Elvis Coleman and his son, Kevin." Isaac introduced them to each other.
"Kevin and I go to the same college." Evelyn deadpanned and looked at Elvis expressionlessly. Elvis slightly creased his brows in confusion before smiling at her.
"Well, that's-"
"You know-" Evelyn interrupted him while Kevin looked at her with pointed expression. "Your son is a great friend, Mr Coleman. He is a very good listener and a very understandable friend. I bet he learnt that from you. I see you listen to your son very well and advice him like a good friend." She said and openly lied to him. "It's very rare to see father and son getting so well in this generation." She added.
"Indeed, it is," Elvis said awkwardly and did a light tug on his suit before throwing a sheepish glanced at his son. "I'm glad that my son has a friend like you."
"No, I am lucky to have a friend like him," Evelyn said throwing a smile at Kevin.
"Evelyn, let's go and grab a drink, shall we?" Kevin said politely to which she nodded at him smilingly. They both excused themselves and walked toward the table.
"What were you trying to do back there?" Kevin asked casually as they both reached their hands to grab a glass of wine.
"Nothing, I was just trying to socialize with high-status people," Evelyn answered amusedly before taking a sip of her wine. Kevin chuckled at her before sipping down his wine.
"By the way, you're looking gorgeous tonight," Kevin complimented with a sincere smile.
"Thank you. And you're looking very gentleman in suits." She said under her amused smile.
"Evelyn," Evelyn turned to her right and saw Eleanor and the boys walking towards them. She inwardly let out a relieved sigh when she noticed Nathan was not among them. Eleanor grinned widely and tugged her arm into Evelyn's.
"You disappeared suddenly. We didn't even get the time to proceed on our friendship after our first meet." Eleanor pouted, halfway grumbling.
"Sorry for that, went down with flu making me suddenly disappear," Evelyn said amusedly looking at her. "But I'm all better now," She added with a smile. To start with, she was not sick at all, it was just an excuse to avoid him for some time.
"I'm glad that you're all better, Evelyn," William said softly and rested his large hand over her head. "Glad to have you among us. We missed you." He added and gently patted over her head, smiling down at her to which Evelyn looked up to him and smiled back.
"You both look like lovely siblings," Jeffrey jested under his chuckle.
After some moments, Adrian, Kevin, Jeffrey and Evelyn were the only ones left among their friend's circle. The others were called by their parents to introduce and socialize with the people.
"Looks like Stephen's mother is going to set him up for an arranged marriage," Jeffrey jested looking at Stephen who was awkwardly standing beside the ladies. Evelyn chuckled softly and aimlessly looked around and saw Victoria at the balcony, her forearms rested over the railings with body curved slightly and a glass of wine in her hand. She excused herself from the boys and made her ways towards the balcony.
"You're welcome," Evelyn said casually and stood by the railings, two adjacent steps away from Victoria.
"There's nothing to be thankful to you," Victoria drawled lazily and rolled her eyes over.
"I knew you were against the engagement too," Evelyn said boldly, staring up at the night sky. Victoria turned towards her and regarded her for a moment before drifting her gaze back to staring at the sky.
"You disappeared. Didn't know that you could get sick," Victoria said mockingly.
"Well, you can't help it when your life is battling with Cancer," Evelyn said quietly. Victoria snapped her head towards Evelyn and looked at her with creased eyebrow, looking almost concern.
"Don't give me that look," Evelyn chuckled softly. "You almost looked concerned."
"Cancer is not-"
"I was just kidding. I'm not sick, I'm totally fine." Evelyn interrupted and said lazily. Victoria let out an annoying sigh and rolled her eyes over before looking away from her.
"You dare tried to poison Aaleyah's mind and ruin our friendship," Evelyn casually said, there was no sign of anger or threat in her tone. Victoria gave her a corner glance and didn't say anything.
"Aaleyah tells me everything," Evelyn stated.
"This is why I envy you, you are surrounded by such good friends," Victoria said quietly before straightening up in her position and taking a light sip of her drink.
"Well, if you can't find yourself a good friend, try to be that good friend to others then," Evelyn said as she rested her one arm against the railing and looked at Victoria. "Or we can be friends, you know," She added in a shrugged.
Victoria scoffed softly at her words and looked at her. "You've changed, Evelyn," She remarked casually.
"I guess I have and for good," Evelyn shrugged.
Victoria smirked at her before shaking her head, "See you at class, Evelyn," she said cockily before walking away from the balcony.
"Change," Evelyn pondered in thought as she blankly stared at Victoria's retrieving back. "I'm surprised at myself too for asking you to be friends," She sighed heavily and shook her head. She turned her body and rested both her arms over the railings and took a deep breath of the fresh air passing by.
"Are you alright?" She heard Nathan's soft voice from behind. She didn't turn back to look at him- she could feel her wounds slowly opening up inside her heart but she didn't let it show. Nathan came beside her, keeping an arm-length distance between them.
"I guess I'm fine now. I was just taking my time to face you confidently after that night," She said quietly and turn to smile at him.
"Evelyn, you don't-"
"I still like you so much, Nathan," Evelyn interrupted and said boldly. "And I don't mind if you don't feel the same for me. So don't ever tell me not to like you coz I'll always like you," She said and turned away from him and stared at the night sky. Nathan stood speechless beside her and simply stared at her.
"Don't mind me. You just do what you usually do and I'll do what I want to do." She said in a finality tone and glanced a smile at him.
Nathan softly but awkwardly cleared his throat and looked away from her, facing to his front. "Well, you've got lots of writing to do. You've been gone for a whole week." He said trying to be casual.
"You don't have to worry about that, Russell mailed me all the notes and I copied it already in my books. I'm very good and fast in writing anything." She said with a cheeky smile making Nathan stifled a laugh at her.
Evelyn let out a chuckled and darted her eyes downstairs only to see Mark and Eleanor sitting by the swimming pool. "I never thought that Mark would have such a beautiful and lovely fiance," She said softly gazing down at them.
"Their parents engaged them when they were ten and since then Eleanor has always been in love with him," Nathan said amusedly.
"What about Mark? Does he not love Eleanor?" Evelyn asked.
"I don't know. Mark was always against the engagement but now, I don't know if he is still against it." Nathan answered looking down at them.
Evelyn silently regarded his word and stared down at Mark who was simply staring at Eleanor.
"People change," Evelyn whispered softly under her small smile.
"You lied to me," Nathan said amusedly making her snapped towards him. "You said so yourself that you're not the daughter of the Chairman," He added and gave her an amused plus accusation looked.
"Ah- that," Evelyn said under her chuckled. "How I wish that was true," She said under her dry laugh.
"You seemed to have some issue with your mother," Nathan said casually. Evelyn regarded his words and turned around, leaning her back against the railing and staring inside the great hall through the large glass slid door. Her eyes landed on her mother who was now engulfed in entertaining conversation with some high-class ladies and gentlemen.
Her eyes followed her mother's movement and saw her greeting Adrian with her usual signature smile- indecipherable and uncanny one. They shared a short conversation before her mother went to talk with another group of ladies and gentlemen.
"Enjoy the party, Nathan," She said with a smile before walking away from the place.
Nathan turned around gently and stared at her retrieving back. He watched her as she went towards Adrian and started to converse with him. Adrian and he had shared history of girl issue in the past but this time, he won't let it happen again.
"Adrian is one of the reasons for your refusal, isn't he?" William stated thoughtfully staring at Adrian and Evelyn. Nathan glanced at him and regarded his presence beside him. Then he let out a sigh before turning back and rested both his arms over the railing and stared up. William leaned his back against the railings and shoved both his hands in his pockets, eyes still at Adrian and Evelyn.
"Why do you both always fall for the same girl?" Willam pondered amusedly.
"We only did once," Nathan deadpanned. "And it nearly destroyed our friendship." He added quietly. "But not this time, I only like Evelyn as a friend," He said.
"Keep convincing yourself," William said.
