Chapter 4
"Hange." Levi signalled, forcing the section commander to join him in a more private space, making their discussion obvious to the elder Zoe.
Without worry, Hange followed, they trusted Levi and Levi trusted them, however, neither of them fully trusted Beka, not even her own sibling.
"Well, what is it you wanted to talk about?" Hange asked.
"Your sister, can we trust her?" The captain interrogated.
"To put it simply, no." Hange answered briefly. "But on this occasion, I suggest we betray her before she can betray us. She won't see it coming, mainly because she's so convinced that she's the one in control."
"And you're willing to risk it?" Levi followed up.
"I'm willing to try." They spoke. "But I'm not exactly certain of her motives yet, she wants to get her journals back, that part was clear, but surely she could have done that herself. What reason is there for her to get the scouts involved. None of it makes sense." The section commander pushed their face into their hands. "If she really felt like it, then she would've killed the soldiers as soon as she set foot into the barracks."
"What type of threat is she? And who exactly are we facing?" Levi pressed, but in truth, not even Hange knew.
"I've not seen her since she backed out of the training corps. She left pretty early on, only learning what she had to. We were supposed to sign up together, she knew it was my dream, and for a while, I believed it was hers too." They explained. "Unfortunately, she's a compulsive liar. And I hate to admit it but she's a genius, she's wearing one of her inventions as we speak."
"Let me talk to her, give her a quick interrogation before we let her tag along, if you're right, she's better to keep as a friend rather than an enemy."
"Being around her is dangerous enough."

You could learn a lot about a person by first impressions, human instinct was often a liable factor when it came to meeting new people. Rebekah liked how much people unknowingly gave away upon meeting her. For example, just by listening in on Hange's conversation, she had a new image of captain Levi. At first, he seemed like the type to be closed off, but then again, he knew that he was strong, so others opinions didn't register to him. Then there was the titan boy, he wasn't anything special, other than his ability to shift forms. Yet, he did hold a slight hero complex, mainly because of his rivalry with Jean. Mikasa and Historia held some common ground, each of them kept to themselves and were quite angsty, their main difference was that Mikasa was set to protect Eren, where as the other didn't even care to protect herself.
Sasha and Connie also had a lot in common, both lacking intellect but sharing a friendship that would seem unbreakable. Jean also collided with them at times, becoming part of their group, the only one who could make valuable decisions. However, Armin was the one she chose to be more cautious of, for now at least. Clearly, he was smart, smart enough to be a threat, but unfortunately, his lack of confidence in himself gave Beka an advantage.
"Now I get it, I've seen that look before." Levi spoke, re-entering the room . This led to Beka quickly change her facial expression to a more challenging look, beckoning Levi to continue. "You're taking notes, mentally writing down our weaknesses. What makes you do that?" He asked.
"I see there's no fooling the captain." Beka smirked but continued nonetheless. "Knowledge is power, and I intend to be a step ahead of everyone I meet, you're no exception." Levi didn't show any emotion, but Beka could see straight through his act, he cared, she knew it.
"I'm no exception?" He questioned. "Then why don't you be so kind as to share that knowledge."
"I must say, you're smarter than I expected you to be, but I guess it comes with experience, you've been analysing me too, haven't you." Beka turned the tables, but before he could form a response, she continued. "You think you're unreadable, that stupid expression you hold is only a mask, believe me, I know. And despite your careless attitude, you do care, about your squad, about your friends, etcetera. So, that's the knowledge I managed to gain. Happy?"
The captain didn't respond, but his answer was clear, he was surprised that Hange's sister managed to obtain so much knowledge so easily, then again, she was the maniacs sister, and he needed to know more.
That lead to Beka's current situation, alone in a dark room with Levi. It was strange to say the least, but she found it a perfect opportunity to tease him, something she enjoyed very much.
"It's obvious that we can't trust you, so why don't you convince me otherwise?" He demanded, to which Beka stifled a laugh.
"If this is you flirting, I'm not interested. Convince me otherwise? Do you hear yourself?" She snickered. Levi responded violently, grabbing her forearm.
"What the hells this?" He fidgeted with the metal under her sleeve.
"Armour, curtesy of me, of course." She answered, watching the confusion begin to leave his face.
"You came here, wearing a full set of armour?" He questioned and figured the safety of his squad was in jeopardy.
"It was never my intention to come here, but meeting Hange was convenient for my needs." The scientist honestly answered.
"What needs?"
"Look, I understand you want to protect your squad, but is this necessary. If I wanted to hurt someone I would've done it by now. It's a basic saying but you get the gist." She attempted to change the subject.
"What needs?" Levi persisted.
"I want to get my journals back."
At this point, Rebekah was beginning to get annoyed. Levi knew she wanted her journals back, so did Hange, so why did they keep asking her. The same question was too repetitive.
'Unless, they think there's another reason.' Beka thought. 'But if they know about my other motive, then why keep me around? Do they want to find out? Does Hange appreciate my presence, or are they using me. I have noticed a change in them, so it's possible.'
"You think I have a second motive?" She switched the interrogation, noticing the slip in Levi's expression, she was right. "So you do. Looks like my hunch payed off."
"Hange said you were smart, also said we couldn't trust you, which I didn't intend to do anyway."
"Well, good for you. Though I don't see why this simple exchange of services will require trust. More so, if anyone should be concerned about trust, it's me. I've agreed to help you first." Rebekah confirmed, dodging the subject of her second motive, which she knew Hange would disapprove of. Surely, her sibling, or any other sane person, wouldn't want her to go on a killing spree.
"What do you get out of it." He continued, slightly confusing Beka because of his vagueness.
"Out of what?"
"Using the scouts. Hange said you saw the men stole your journals earlier, so why do you need us?" He elaborated.
"It's convenient for my needs."
'In order to find the bastards who stole my original plans, I need bait. The scouts will pose a perfect threat, and a reason for them to use my gear, if they have formed it.'
Their conversation was cut short when a knock was heard in the door, someone was there, but the reason was still unknown. Judging by Levi's confused look, the company wasn't expected. "This interrogation is over." Beka concluded and began to walk up the basement stairs, until something obstructed her. Levi's hand wrapped itself around her wrist, so in a swift motion, Rebekah pulled her wrist forward and pushed the captain against the wall.
"Don't you dare touch me." She threatened, placing her armoured forearm against his throat, but unfortunately she underestimated his strength.
Levi brought up one of his knees, bringing it towards Beka'a stomach, she quickly sensed the motion and pushed away from Levi, momentarily surrendering. She hated admitting defeat, but given time, after he'd served his purpose, she could dispose of him.
"Scared? Here I was thinking you wouldn't back down." He taunted, irritating the genius.
"I know better than to waste my time. I may be impulsive but I'm not an idiot." She defended, beginning to walk up the stairs once again, only this time, Levi allowed it.
When the two entered the room, Hange immediately took notice of the tension, they could tell that both Levi and Rebekah despised each other, just one interaction led to so much spite. The section commander didn't know who they were more afraid for in that moment.
"Captain Levi sir, I have a message from commander Erwin. I went to tell him about pastor Nick but he gave me this and sent me off." Nefa explained, handing Levi a note.
"Get your gear now, we're leaving. Make it look like we were never here." Levi instructed the squads as they instantly got up and gathered their things. "And you." He faced Beka. "I want you by my side at all times." He ordered, making Beka roll her eyes.
"Didn't know you felt that way, Captain." She snickered.
'Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer.' She mentally chuckled. 'Such a by the book thing to do.' Yet regardless, she followed his instructions, he wouldn't be alive for much longer anyways, nobody crossed her and got away with it, and now, she was fulfilling that promise.
It didn't take long for them to escape onto a nearby hill to observe the mps raid the cottage, eyes still lingered on the scientist, did they blame this on her?
"How did commander Erwin know they were headed here?" Armin questioned.
"The governments passed down some new orders, there's been a freeze on all scout activity beyond the walls. We're to hand over Eren and Historia." The captain explained to the group.
"Captain, I didn't have time to tell you but some mps came for the commander right after I left him." Nifa added.
"What like he's some kind of criminal or something?" Hange gasped.
'I didn't expect my plan to work so smoothly, how convenient.' Beka thought. In truth, her plan was to use the scouts as a threat, but now, the military was aiding her, and they didn't even know it.
"They're bringing this fight out into the open, no more working from the shadows." Levi said.
"They're going to protect the walls secrets at any cost. But why exactly are they after Eren and Historia for? They don't want them dead, so what are they planning?" The section commander pondered, causing most the scouts to also think about the same questions.
"Who's Historia again?" Beka interrupted and gathered the answer by the averted gazed to a blonde girl. "Got it."
"They want them and they're not being subtle about it, which makes lingering here dangerous. We'll move Eren and Historia to Trost." The captain spoke, raising multiple questions from the squad, but Beka understood perfectly.
"You've been on the run before?" She asked, but already knew the answer. "Trost is still in a panic because of the titan incident, meaning it should be easy to sneak in and out." The scientist then explained to the group, earning a few nods.
"We don't know the identity of our enemy yet, I have an idea of how we can change that. Hange, I need you to lend me some of your squad." The captain instructed.
"No problem, all right, I'm going after commander Erwin, Moblit's with me, the rest of you will go with Levi." The section commander ordered and jumped onto their horse. "Rebekah, don't screw this up. Promise?" Hange pleaded.
"Promise." Beka replied, not yet sure if what she was saying was a lie or not.
"Maniacs sister." Levi called over, to which Beka didn't take notice of at first. "Do you know how to use ODM gear?" He asked.
"I won't be using your gear, I'll be using my own." She pushed the cloak to the side, revealing her own invention. "It's better than yours, made it myself." She bragged.
"Tch, as long as you know how to use it, I couldn't care less." He stated. "Know that no one here will have your back, if you're in danger, that's on you. So don't even think about putting my squad in danger."
Normally, Beka would brush off an insult like that, or just kill whoever spoke to her in such manner. But Levi was different, she needed him for her plan to work and couldn't kill him, not yet.
"You're lucky you're friends with Hange." Beka stated. "The way you're talking, you're practically begging to get on my bad side."
"Are you threatening me?"
"I'm warning you." She challenged. "You're all out of your depth, none of you have the slightest clue of what's going on, but I do."
