Ten Years Ago...

The lab was especially cold that night. The air around not at all influenced by the heat of my core. I was the primary light in the room, with only a few lights on the machines accompanying me.

She was late.

I'd calculated the exact amount between the scientists leaving and her arrival since she started coming five weeks ago. Always on time.
Until now.

Had she been caught this time? Part of me hoped not, I...I enjoyed her company. She brought news with her from the outside, stuff even the scientists never spoke of.

My attention was drawn by a soft creaking, and slowly, the grate on the floor moved and a head appeared.

"I'm late. I know." She whispered, as if reading my mind. Sometimes I was certain she was a telepath. "They've amped up the security, so it took a little longer."

"As long as you're here..." I murmured. Her aqua eyes never left me, even as she scrambled up onto the concrete floor. "What news today?"

"A bombing... they think it was The Renegades, but no absolute proof yet..." She looked away for a moment. "...The public is still oblivious to this horror house they call a science center. 'Helping the future' my claws...!"

She'd always puzzled me, risking her life and freedom to see me every night. Why? How had this girl found out about this lab in the first place?

"You'll always be a mystery, won't you?" I asked.

She smirked, "As if you'll be any different." She leaned up close to the glass, my reflection like sparks in her eyes. "I'm working on a plan to get you out of here and shut this place down."

I sighed, "Don't waste your time."

"If it means saving you, then it won't be wasted time... nobody should be locked up like this."

"Once you got me out, then what? What plan do you have for after my escape?"

She growled, "I don't know. I haven't gotten that far. But your freedom is all I'm concerned about right now."

"Such a peculiar child, you are."

Suddenly the humming of the elevator broke the silence, and she dashed for the tunnel below. "If you get out on your own, don't forget to let me know." She whispered, pulling the grate back in its place and leaving no evidence she'd ever been there, just like always.

I stared at the grate for a moment or so, then pulled away from the glass. She was crazy to think she could free me on her own, but she sure had quite a spark to try.

I suddenly realized I'd never heard her speak her name; although I had never bothered to tell her mine, either. Yet she acted as if she did not need to.
Still, I was curious... what name did she go by out there? What name would be plastered on the walls when she was caught 'Investigating Government Business...?'

Perhaps she'd tell me once her insane rescue plan, by some miracle, worked. Or perhaps I was over thinking this. After all, she was mortal, and I not. Even if she did free me, sooner or later, she'd die like everyone else...

I did not like to think about that.
