Chapter 74
Sunshine sits in front of the camera.
"I, have, uh...something I'd like to tell all of you," she begins, scratching her chin. "Uh. Me and Colin. We're dating." She becomes more confident. "We're dating! Yes. Okay. That's all. Blah."
Yeah. They're...dating.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
Thirty minutes after her confession, there's a rapid knock on the door.
"Sunshine?!" Nolan calls. "Sunshine, I know you're in there, come on, I gotta talk to you—"
Sunshine, who has carefully made her way out the back door in wait of Nolan, growls and springs on to the porch. The next thing she knows, she's shoving him against the wall. "Are you freaking kidding me?! You're kidding me, right?!"
"No, I'm not—" Nolan backs away as she continues to hit him. She goes on a verbal rave and he gasps out a breath at a particularly hard hit. "I'm not kidding you about anything, calm down."
She smacks his arm. And continues to.
"Stop—stop it! Listen—ow, ow! Ow! Why are you hurting me?"
"Cause!" She growls as she thumps her hands against his red jacket. "You waited until I had to say I was fake dating your brother you little—!"
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
The next thing she knows, they're both sitting on the couch. Sunshine has her brows raised and Nolan is staring forward, clearly annoyed.
"So why were you dating my brother," he says, emotionless, not looking at her.
"Oh my goodness," she grumbles, "I'm not dating your brother."
"I know you're not dating my brother. Why did you put up a YouTube video saying that you were dating my brother?"
"Because clearly it worked, you came running." Sunshine rolls her eyes. "It was Victoria's idea, okay?"
He looks at her. "It was mean."
"Oh my gosh!"
"It was mean!"
"You're dramatic."
"It was mean to me and my brother. Especially my brother."
"Oh my—whatever."
Silence.
"Well, now I'm here," Nolan remarks.
"Yeah, you're here, why'd you go away, hm?"
"Why do you want me back?"
"Why were you missing?" she shoots back.
"I wasn't missing! I was just somewhere else, is that such a big deal?"
"Yeah, well, you just kinda disappeared."
Nolan throws his arms in the air. "I went to—" He clears his throat. "I don't know, I just...went around a little while."
"Why?"
He looks at his gloved hands. He really is bundled up too tightly for cloudy weather, wearing a hideous plaid scarf and an equally hideous jacket. "I don't know!" Nolan finally says. "I went to Chicago."
"Okay."
"I've never been to Chicago."
"Whatever. Why?"
"It was great, it was a good time," he tries.
Sunshine blinks. "Why?"
"Because not everybody just wants to stay here, looking at dead people be crazy all the time. There's other stuff out there," he explains shortly. At Sunshine's look, he frowns. "There is. There are things to see."
She raises a brow. "This is a terrible explanation."
"Well I'm sorry that you don't like it, but...what do you need?"
"So you disappeared because...?"
"I don't know..." He looks down again. "I couldn't handle it."
"Couldn't handle what?"
He purses his lips together bitterly. "Being drowned."
"Oh my gosh, that was one time."
"Have you ever been drowned?"
"No, but it was one time!"
"Okay," Nolan says, "well you come back and talk to me if you've been drowned."
"You're so dramatic."
He nods. "I live in a dramatic world."
"Mm-hm. You're like a female."
"I'm not like a female. You're not like a female either!"
Apparently neither of them are.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
The brothers are fighting. About Sunshine.
Great.
"Because you're young," Nolan says as he and Colin stand in the kitchen. "And...tiny and gorgeous but—hey!" he interrupts when his brother tries to speak, "Listen, man, she's bad news."
Colin puts his hands on his hips. "Why?"
"Because! She's my—she's my friend."
Colin scoffs. "She's not more your friend than my friend!"
"She's always—"
"I didn't even know her before, like, you didn't even tell her about me? When you're doing all those videos with her?"
"No!" Nolan exclaims. "I don't talk about you, you're my brother, not my girlfriend!"
"What?!" Colin says.
"I don't have to talk about you if I don't want to!" Nolan continues. "I can just be my own guy for a while, right?"
"Oh my gosh," Colin groans, "yeah, but you're going off, you're going everywhere and I'm just...hangin' out with her!"
"Yeah, and you hang out with whoever you want! I don't care! The point is, guys are trying to emotionally—"
"Boys!" Marcie stomps in. They both go silent and stare at her. "That is enough. Sunshine is a person, she's not a fire truck you fought over when you were five."
Their dog—Morty—barks wildly in the background.
"You're making the dog crazy, stop it," she orders with finality in her tone.
Sunshine just laughs. "Best day ever."
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
"Okay, so," Sunshine begins as she rushes down the stairs with her camera, "I'm pretty sure I heard Victoria's voice, which is weird because it doesn't really travel." When she reaches the first floor, she's greeted with...something.
Uncle Tommy has his back to Sunshine as he and Victoria sit on the couch. They're whispering something, and upon seeing Sunshine, Victoria stands to leave.
"Oh—wait, Victoria, wait." Tommy quickly grabs something from the side table—a green, wrapped present—and gives it to her. "I gotcha a present."
Victoria takes it. "Thank you."
"Bye, Tori!" Tommy waves as she walks out the door."
Sunshine raises a brow. "Tori?"
"We're friends," Tommy shrugs with a smile.
"Oh...what was she doin'?"
"She was just helping me out with something."
"Okayy..."
"Blah!"
Silence.
"It doesn't work, does it?" he asks.
No. No it doesn't.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
They're sitting on the couch. Again. Except this time Nolan's got a pillow hugged between his arms.
"Yeah, buddy," Nolan says as Sunshine continues looking between him and the camera.
Sunshine laughs. "So...buddy..."
"Buddy," he smirks.
"How ya feelin'?"
"I feel fine," he shrugs.
"All the stuff with...Colin and such," she continues.
"It's a little weird," he says, making a face, "but you guys are both, y'know...adult Americans. Do what you want, I don't know. Why?" He drops his expression when he looks at her.
"Nothing! I just wanted to make sure you're cool."
"Why do you always have to have these conversations?" Nolan looks toward the screen. "On camera? It's weird."
"Cause," Sunshine smiles, "the viewers deserve to know."
Nolan squints. "Really?"
"Yeah."
"What have they done?"
"They follow our story, hello."
"Thank you guys," Nolan says to the camera, feigning a heartfelt expression, "you're the best."
She laughs. "See?"
"Seriously."
"What?"
"I don't know! You can't expect to always get—"
"No no no! This conversation is about you."
"—one hundred percent honest reactions out of people if you always have them on film. One has one's dignity to look after in those situations."
Sunshine raises her brows. "No, this is about you." She pats his shoulder, smirking. "Are you okay?"
He makes a face and smiles weirdly. "Don't touch me. It's weird when you touch me."
"It was a pat!"
"Don't...pat me, even."
She does it again.
Nolan laughs. "Stop, please! I'm fine."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah, it's all good." He gives a thumb up.
"Okay," Sunshine says, slightly disbelieving.
"It's fantastic."
BESIDES THE CHEETO SCENE I'VE NEVER LAUGHED SO HARD AT NOLAN AND COLIN'S FIGHT
