Chapter 9 Running
Mirai
-----
In a mixture of colors of bright light, the door flew open, and I ran. On the floor were two witches. I knew both of them. They were somewhat close to Mom and would come over from time to time for tea. But none of that mattered. I didn't pay them any attention, but darted past them. In that moment, they were nothing more than obstacles I had to run from.
It wasn't until I turned into a corridor to the right that the witches found their voices.
"Mirai is escaping!" they shouted. That word, escaping, made me sure I had made the right decision by blasting the door. They would not have let me leave. I was not a free witch within the coven anymore, but a prisoner.
I made another turn and ropes shot at me. I created a stone wall in front of me before turning to run in the opposite direction.
The house really was a maze and though I had walked the corridors so many times, it all became confusing as I ran. My heart and adrenaline pounded too much in my head for me to keep track of the turns I took.
A blast of light came at me and I pressed myself against the wall so it missed, before I went into another corridor. Two witches came out of a room to grab hold of me, but I sent them flying back in. I turned into another corridor, but when I had gotten halfway through it, two witches appeared and walked towards me. I sent spells at them, but they repelled them. I turned to run in the other direction only to see the Priestess walking from there towards me.
I was trapped. No place left to run.
"Where do you think you're going?" the Priestess spat at me. I didn't pay her any attention, but looked behind the two witches coming towards me. Behind them was a window.
I created a stone wall to block the Priestess out. I knew she'd break it easily, but I just needed a few seconds. Then I cast spell after spell at the two other witches. They kept repelling them, but it had to take a lot of their concentration. At least I hoped so.
After the fifth spell, I heard the stone break behind me and I ran forward while casting one last spell at them. Sure enough, they were too busy dealing with my spells, so the impact of my shoulder towards one of them made the witch fall and me slip past.
I cast another spell at the window, and just like the door had been blasted open by light, the window was shattered by it.
I placed my hands on the window frame and heaved myself out. I fell to the ground at the backside of the coven's house. In front of me was the forest, all that stood between me and freedom. Spells were set up to stop teleportation inside the coven's area. But as long as I managed to get to the other side of the forest, I could teleport myself to anywhere in the world. Out of their reach.
I scrambled to my feet to run again. But I only managed two steps before I fell, head first. I turned over and sat up. My legs had been bound by ropes and the Priestess' bimbo sidekick stopped only a few meters away from me with a triumphant smile on her face. It made her look quite ugly, for her eyes shone with malice.
"Such an annoyance," she scoffed at me.
The wall around the window I had jumped out of crumbled with a loud bang and from the debris the Priestess stepped.
"I repeat myself. Where do you think you're going?" she asked me in a voice of dark, collected calm. Her eyes were narrowed at me, but I could see a single drop of sweat roll down the side of her face.
"Away!" I yelled back. "Anywhere but here."
"You belong to this coven and you will do as asked of you."
"I don't!" She startled at my shout, and I felt a sense of accomplishment seeing that. "I just turned eighteen. I have sworn no allegiance yet."
"So is that it? You wish to be a rogue? Well then, I'll treat you like one then."
She raised her hands, to perform a hex, I was sure. Her eyes glittered with the viciousness of broken glass. I closed my eyes to wait for the impact of the hex, but it never came.
Heavy paw falls, two fierce snarls, and the shriek of the Priestess.
I opened my eyes to see the Priestess throw off a lynx from her body, throw off Redmond. He had already managed to harm her though. Her dress was ripped over her chest.
She made to cast another spell, but Redmond attacked her again. The bimbo sidekick started mumbling a spell next, and Redmond turned his attention to her.
Meanwhile, a black panther, that I knew was Richmond, was by me. His claws ripped open the ropes and then he nudged me with his head, nudged me towards the forest. I knew what he wanted. For me to run while they stayed to give me as much of a head start as possible.
"No," I said in a shaky voice, and his eyes hardened as he nudged me again. "I can't leave you two!"
He let out a snarl, loud and clear, as was the message. Then he turned. A few more witches had showed up, and he joined in the fight to help Redmond.
I got to my feet again and ran. Tears streamed down and off my face as I did and I prayed to the Goddess that both of them would be alright. That they wouldn't be stupid. That they would run as well before it was too late.
I wasn't sure for how long I ran, only that it was long enough for my legs to feel like jelly. But I almost never exercised, so that didn't say much. I did know exactly when I exited the coven's land though. It was almost as if the air eased up and it became easier to breathe. Only it wasn't air that was easier to breathe, but magic.
I didn't take a single step more, but turned my body and teleported myself away.
So now Mirai is properly on the run and starting her search for the woman. It is a search that will have her traveling around half the world, encountering a hand-full of mythological creatures, and come across a couple of familiar faces.
Any guesses/hopes of places she might go?
Any guesses/hopes of what mythological creatures she'll encounter?
Any guesses/hopes of what familiar faces she'll come across?
Stay blessed
Elena
