Chapter 8

Fire Books

Adeen sat next to Wendy in Snape's office. She stayed silent as the head of their house chewed Wendy a new one for getting into a fight when the school had visitors.

"Detention, Miss Gilmera, for an entire week starting tomorrow. You're lucky Kalama was there to stop you before you made a bigger fool of yourself," Snape hissed before pointing to his door for the girls to get out. They bowed their heads before leaving. Adeen could feel Wendy getting all riled up from her side as they wandered back to their common room.

"I will destroy that Ravenclaw," Wendy growled under her breath. Adeen didn't say anything as her friend picked up her pace, leaving Adeen behind.

Adeen knew Wendy was protective of her friends, to an excessive point sometimes, but she meant the best.

Wendy continued to ramble on about a Ravenclaw not leaving Hannah alone and then daring to touch her leg without consent, causing Wendy to go berserk.

Although Adeen would have most definitely beat the boy to another dimension, Hannah said herself she had dealt with the situation with her own two fists and didn't want a ruckus to be made.

Of course, Wendy did not get the memo.

"I support your cause in any way, shape, or form. But if Hannah said she had dealt with it, why make a bigger fuss? She's a big girl, Wendy; Hannah can take care of herself. After all, we won't always be around."

"Harsh words, firecracker," Wendy snapped back. As soon as they reached the door to the common room, Wendy quickly entered without another word said.

Adeen huffed loudly before deciding to leave Wendy with her feelings for a while.

The library was a nice place for Adeen to visit. While she wasn't a big fan of the librarian, she pushed aside her negative thoughts about Madam Pince and found herself amongt the books.

Without a care in the world, she grabbed a random book off the shelf and sat at a table. Adeen tucked her hair behind her ears and crossed her legs as she opened the first page and began to read.

She only made it a paragraph in before she heard the chair in front of her being pulled away. Adeen peeked up from the words with a glare for interrupting her but immediately choked on her own spit when she saw a familiar ginger.

Adeen's eyes flickered around before deciding to ignore Fred and went back to her book.

She tried her hardest to concentrate on her book about wands but couldn't process anything as Fred continued to look at her. Finally letting out a hot huff (Fred swore he saw smoke), she slammed her book shut. She glared at the Gryffindor with questioning eyes.

"Can I help you?" She snapped.

Fred blushed when he suddenly found himself under Adeen's umber eyes. He couldn't come up with a quick enough response before Madam Pince shushed them loudly. Fred shot a smile at the redhead and winked. He opened his palm to show Adeen a little toy the Slytherin knew he had invented.

"Watch this," he whispered. Using his wand, the little clay monkey toy began to jump from table to table, stealing scraps of papers as it went along. It jumped among the bookshelves and knocked down books. The little toy suddenly jumped up on one of the chandeliers in the library and swung around.

Adeen watched in a mixture of awe and annoyance as the monkey toy made a disturbance all around. When the librarian showed up, she let out a shrill scream. Madam Pince desperately tried to stop the toy with her wand, but she kept missing, meaning her attacks hit her precious books instead.

Adeen frowned as she watched students run out of the library as many spells were thrown around. She turned to glare at the Gryffindor and was surprised to find him awkwardly rubbing his neck.

"I uh, swear I didn't mean to cause all this," he muttered with a blushing face.

The Slytherin rolled her eyes. While everyone was distracted Adeen shot a stream of subtle fire towards the toy. Her eyes widened when the unexpected happened.

She missed.

Adeen watched as her fires hit the books. Her stomach suddenly filled with pain as she watched a bookshelf catch on fire. Her own fire spread quicker than she anticipated.

Smoke began to fill the library and it blocked everyone's eyesight. Everyone but Adeen. The Slytherin could hear Madam Pince screaming Aguamenti desperately all around her.

"KALAMA!"

Adeen flinched when she heard the librarian scream her name. She turned to her side to grab Fred but he was gone. She panicked and tired to find him through the smoke, but she couldn't find his red hair.

In a case of desperation, Adeen began to suck up her flames. Pushing her powers to the limit, she ate up what she had released. Her chest raged with a burning sensation as the flames returned to it's caster.

It took a moment, but Adeen was able to consume the fires up. All that was left was an overbearing amount of smoke. Adeen let out a pained gag as she massaged her chest. She frantically checked her robe pockets until she found her purple pills. Adeen tossed six into her mouth and swallowed them dry. The pain in her chest continued but it was nulled enough for her to stand again.

Adeen could hear mumbled spells around her in separate directions. Once the smoke was cleared with magic, Adeen frowned when she saw Dumbledore and the head of her house there. A couple of professors were checking the library for injured students but as far as she was concerned, no one had gotten injured.

Adeem lowered her eyes as Dumbledore approached her.

"Sir."

"Miss Kalama... Are you alright?" The headmaster asked softly. Adeen nodded before clearing her throat.

"It was an accident, I swear," she muttered. Albus Dumbledore hummed. He knew Adeen would never purposely hurt someone. It wasn't in her nature, despite being so cold to everyone. As he listened to Madam Pince's screeching words towards Adeen, Albus had to calm down the hysterical librarian.

"Clear the library... Make sure no one saw anything about happened here today," Dumbledore said quietly to Snape. The potions master nodded before giving a look to Adeen and leaving to help the other professors.

"Miss Kalama, how did manage to get rid of the flames?" He asked once he knew no one was in earshot. Adeen stared at the ground in shame.

"I had to eat them, sir."

Dumbledore hummed again. He glanced around the area before dusting his robe off.

"Alright, Adeen, come follow me."

The Slytherin had no choice but to follow the headmaster out of the half-burned library. As she left, she spotted the professors helping to fix what the fires had destroyed. She lowered her eyes as she continued to follow the headmaster.

"Sir, wait!"

Both Adeen and Dumbledore stopped at the voice screaming at them. Adeen frowned when she saw Fred approaching them. Albus noticed her grim face and gave her a warning look to play nice.

"Sir, Adeen did nothing, it was my fault! That toy was a creation of mine and-"

"It's alright, Mister Weasley, don't fret. Adeen is not in trouble."

That was all that was said before Adeem and Dumbledore left the scene. Fred watched in angst as the Slytherin disappeared around the corner.

He wasn't sure how to feel. Why was Adeen being taken away when it wasn't her fault his toy started a fire.

In fact, he wasn't even sure how the toy started the fire. It made no sense to him. After wrecking his head trying to think about what had happened in the cursed library, he decided he simply couldn't ever come up with a believable reason.

Fred instead decided to wait for Adeen once she got out of the headmaster's office.

He also made a mental note to throw out all his products of the little toy.

Adeen slowly drank the potion that was presented to her. It burned even worse than her trying to eat her own flames but she knew she had to endure it.

"Miss Kalama, I don't think I have to explain how dangerous it is to eat your own flames," Professor Dumbledore calmly stated as he ate a lemon drop. Adeen hid her face behind her cup.

"It was all I could think of."

It was true, Adeen shouldn't ever eat her own flames up again after releasing her. Every time she ate them back up, she gathered amense energy from her flames, causing her chest to hurt even more than before. Gathering old flames could make her combust. It was a dangerous game she played whenever she did it (which was rare).

The potion she drank was to help numb the pain and extinguish whatever raging flames were left from her meal. It was disgusting but Adeen drank everything that was given to her without a complaint.

"Am I banned from the library?"

Dumbledore chuckled softly.

"My, now that's a question I don't have an answer to, Miss Adeen. I would suppose not, but I recommend staying away from Madam Pince for a while. Just until I find her a nice gift to make up for the damage," the headmaster joked. Adeen forced a smile and nodded.

"Sir, am I dismissed?"

"Yes, Miss Kalama. Have a nice rest of your day. And if you need anything, remember I'm always here to help."

Adeen didn't remember what she responded, only that she left with a heavy chest and a headache. She ate more of her purple pills before stepping out of the rotating stairs.

She stopped quickly when she spotted Fred Weasley. The two students made eye contact, but all Adeen wanted to do was isolate herself in her room and pretend she was never born.

"Adeen-"

"Leave me alone, Weasley," she grumped and tried her best to ignore Fred but the Gryffindor wasn't easy to lose.

"Please Adeen, I swear I didn't know the toy would go mental and get you in trouble-"

"I'm not in trouble, Weasley. I want to be left alone so I can rest."

Fred watched as she rushed off to the dungeons. He sighed and pulled at his hair.

"I need some advice."
