I looked at him in shock.
So it was okay for him to call me Baby Doll, but I can't call him by his first name.
Unbelievable!
I wanted rolled my eyes and give him a piece of me but I can't.
Calm down, Tatty; you need this job.
I cleared my throat and composed myself, "Mr. Wayland, I'll be 100% dedicated to this job." and I will be. This job means a lot to me. It's my first job as a paralegal, and I'm working at one of the most renowned law firms in New York. If I mess this up, then I'm doomed. Normally people start at the bottom and make their way to the top, well I'm at the top, and I plan on staying there. If following Whyatt rules was the way to keep the job, then I'll live by them. It was quite obvious that he had an ego the size of an ocean, but I won't let it get to me. He was born rich and probably wasn't thought proper manners so I'll ignore his insufferable behaviour.
If I become the best paralegal that's ever worked for him then maybe he might be willing to give me a recommendation for law school.
"Good," he said then clapped, "Now that we have that sorted out, I can go over some ground rules with you." I nodded and waited for him to continue. "I specialize in corporate law, but from time to time, I take on criminal cases. Your job consists mostly of filing for sanctions, patterns, drafting documents, checking emails and overseeing my schedule."
"That's fine with me." I learnt all those at university, all I have to do now is apply my knowledge.
"One more thing. No pro bono. We're running a law firm, not a charity foundation." his words were cold as ice, but it wasn't the first time I've heard a lawyer express their thoughts on pro bono work. Majority of lawyers didn't become lawyers to help people; they became lawyers because of the money.
I want to be a lawyer to help people, the money is just a great bonus.
"Okay, no pro bono." I've heard of the Wayland's law doing pro bono work a few times so maybe it was just Whyatt who does do pro bono.
He nodded, "I suggest you start looking for an apartment. You live a bit far from here, and I don't accept tardiness, and you will work late sometimes. It would be better to get an apartment in the city. Traveling by train is not very ideal either."
Doesn't he know how expensive apartments are in Manhattan? Probably not, the man was born with a gold spoon in his mouth.
" I can't afford an apartment in Manhattan, sir. This is my first job since I finished college." He knew this; I told him this.
"I figured you couldn't, so I'll give you an advance." he paused then continued. "You're old enough to be living on your own."
I took a deep breath.
This man had no filters at all. He just says things without even thinking.
Instead of saying what I really want to say, I thanked him. "Thank you, Mr. Wayland. I appreciate your concern."
"I think Gerald and Sue are looking for a new roommate so you can talk to them later." he pushed back his chair and stood. I lifted my head and looked at his muscular frame.
Damn! He was tall and incredibly handsome.
Having him hover over me like that made me feel powerless, like a little kitten.
"Come with me. I'll give a short tour of the floor and show you your office."
"Office?" Did he really say office?
He smiled, "Yes, you'll be getting an office."
I smiled and stood from my seat.
Maybe working with Whyatt won't be so bad after all.
He led me out of his office and closed the door. We walked down the hall into the general area. "These are the associate lawyers," he said, pointing to the cubicles filled with men and women in suits. "If they come to you and ask for assistance, say no. They have their own paralegal, and you're so my services only. You won't have any time to help anyone else." I stopped walking and looked at me. "Understood."
I nodded, "Overstood."
He frowned.
I chuckled and shook my head. I probably use my grandfather's joke at work. "It means.."
He stopped me, "I get it. Don't repeat it."
I wiped the smile off my face, "Understood."
This man can not take a joke. I thought Gerry said he was nice but then again nice is different from having a sense of humour.
"I have an associate that is assigned to me; his name is Sydney Bailey. If we're working on a case together, then he has control over you as well."
I didn't like the word 'control', but then I'm starting to realize that I don't like many things that come out of Whyatt Wayland's mouth.
He gave me one last look then continued walking. "Research is two floors up. Security is on the first floor. Don't be afraid to call them if you see anyone suspicious walking around the place. We have loads of confidential information to protect."
"How many floors of the building is owned by Wayland's Law?"
"The building has twenty-five floors. The first twelve is Mefford & Sons, and the last twelve is Wayland's Law. My father and his younger brother own the building."
I frowned, "Are you saying the Meffords and the Waylands are related?"
"Yea, that's exactly what I'm saying."
I looked at him in shock.
Did he know that his cousin abducted my cousin?
All because of a Twitter post she made on Mefford & Sons.
I shouldn't even know about the abduction because Mia, Tiffany's roommate, made me swear not to say anything to anyone. Bradley Mefford made it clear to her what would happen if word got out. He wanted everyone to believe that Tiffany was on holiday with her boyfriend.
My sweet innocence cousin, Tiffany, on vacation with her non-existing boyfriend.
Although Bradley swore not to hurt her, it was still hard to trust him. There are many ways to solve a problem, and abduction shouldn't be one of them.
"Oh, I've heard a lot about Mefford & Sons."
He looked at me intently then spoke, "If you're talking about them being racist, then that's not true, and neither is Wayland 's Law. You shouldn't believe everything that's posted on the internet."
It's hard not to when the person who posted it is my cousin.
"I don't believe everything on the internet, but it's not a secret that society has a problem with the kinkiness of a black girls hair." It's not a secret that majority of America had a people with black people in general.
"Your hair isn't very kinky," he said, looking at my hair.
I frowned. "That's not the point." Although my hair was on the curly side, it still didn't make me less of a black woman. As long as my skin I will struggle with just as other black people do.
He sighed. "Let's not get into the whole racism thing. Wayland's Law is about equality if someone treats you different because of your race then report them to me, I'll deal with them. Other than don't bring it up again."
I nodded. "Okay, sir. I won't."
"Good. Another thing you should know is that everything we do here at Wayland's law gets billed even a phone call and we charge by the hour so don't waste my time."
"Okay sir, I won't.
He glanced at me with a frown and started walking in the direction of his office. He passed his office and stopped at the one directly beside it. The glassed office similar to his but smaller.
He pushed the door opened and mentioned me in. I walked in the furnished office with him behind me.
"This is your office. If you stay long enough your name might go on the door. I'll send someone from IT to set up an email for you as well as a log in. If you feel like searching any naughty things on the computers here, don't. Everything is montoried."
I frowned at him. I wouldn't even think of doing such things especially not at work. "I won't be doing anything of the sort."
He looked down at my garments then his eyes met mine, "You don't seem like the type anyways."
"I'm not."
"Good to hear." he quickly changed the topic and looked towards the desk, "If you look at your deal you'll see some documents, if them out and carry them to Gerald. I'll take the ones in your hand."
I lifted the portfolio towards him and he took it. "Well, my time is up here. Lunch is at 12pm and it ends at 12:45pm. You're free to leave the building at lunch time but we back before 12:45."
"That's all?"
He nodded, "Yes, that's all for now. Try and get familiar with the place today because tomorrow you'll have loads to do."
"Yes, I will. I'm a fast learner."
"Good. Welcome to Wayland's Law, Tatiana."
