22. First Impressions
Ame had called out sick from work for the day because she didn't want to deal with another full day of people asking her if she was panic girl. Ame didn't like all the attention. It annoyed her. She couldn't believe that ARMY had been able to identify her so quickly, and find her even faster. They were worse than private detectives.
Another reason she had called out sick was because she hadn't gotten much sleep the previous night. She kept waking up every couple of hours in the night from flashbacks of what had happened at the concert. Each time she tried to fall asleep, she felt the panic she had felt then as if it were new, and the person that had saved her from that panic never got to her in time. Instead of him coming to bring her safely to her feet, she was instead faced with cell phone screens and screaming fans.
Ame had set up camp on the couch in the living room after Ruby had left for work, having changed into a pair of gray sweats and a polka dot pajama top. She then began making herself motion sick spinning through the rows of Netflix shows without lifting her finger off the button before beginning to flop in and out of shows like she was a fish trying to get back in the water. At some point, she had taken an intermission from flipping through Netflix to take Charming out of his cage, cuddling him as she sat on the couch. Having not decided on a show and leaving it on the main menu page for too long, the television was now playing a set of fading screenshots of different Netflix shows that might interest her. She stroked Charming's fur as he stayed on her lap, watching all the images come to life before disappearing.
"What do you think I should watch, Charming?" asked Ame as she looked from the television to the bunny on her lap. With no answer from him, she sighed. "I wish that sometimes you'd help me make some decisions around here."
As she continued to sit there, she found her eyes finally becoming heavy with sleep. Charming was like a warm security blanket to her, causing Ame to eventually fall fast asleep.
"Remember my promise. I will be back someday."
Ame was sitting on a park bench in her dream. Charming was still on her lap, but in addition to Charming was a man sitting beside her. She could only tell it was a man through the voice, but even the voice was distorted. It was if it was underwater. It was garbled and unrecognizable. There were foggy clouds of dark gray and black floating about the man beside her, obscuring him from her view. When she would try to shift towards him, the clouds got worse.
"Promise?" She asked. "What promise?"
There was no response from the man then. She looked from the obscured man down to Charming on her lap only to notice that he was no longer there. Where had he gone? Looking back up, she noticed too that the man was gone, but his words echoed out in the air around her; the air that seemed to be getting chiller with each passing second.
"Remember my promise."
"My promise."
"My promise..."
"AME!" yelled Ruby as she grabbed her sister by the shoulders.
When Ruby re-entered their apartment after the meeting with Jungkook and V, she saw that Ame was sleeping sitting up on the couch with Charming on her lap. She felt bad waking Ame knowing that her sister had trouble sleeping the night before, but this was urgent. She had to get up and get out of her lounge wear if she was to possibly meet the man of her dreams.
Or was it the woman of his dreams? She was still trying to make sense of the whole thing in her head. Her shaking hadn't done much to wake Ame. All it had really done was startle Charming off her lap. Ruby watched as he hopped away across the living room floor, no doubt on a quest to find any photos of V she had left lying around.
V. She felt herself falling apart again at the thought of everything that had just occurred, and he had even given her his phone number. Be still her beating heart.
"AME! You need to wake up!" said Ruby as she tried shaking her again, trying to push such thoughts away for now.
"Huh?...What is it, Ruby? Is the apartment on fire?"
"Well no, but..."
"Then let me sleep..." mumbled Ame as she moved from sleeping sitting up right to lying on her side on the couch.
"Yah! You have to get up though! We have guests coming over for dinner tonight!"
"Guests?" She groaned. "Freddi and whoever else you are inviting won't care if I sleep on the couch..."
"It's not Freddi or anyone random," said Ruby as she tried to move to get her sister up. "Trust me. You need to get up and look nice."
At that comment, Ame cracked open an eye to look at Ruby.
"What's wrong with my outfit? It's my sick day."
"Just trust me," said Ruby as she moved to latch on to one of Ame's arms, trying to tug her up. "I have to get started with the cooking."
"Cooking? You?" Ame allowed her sister to tug her up off the couch.
"I'm cooking spaghetti."
"Ah. That makes more sense."
Ruby rolled her eyes as she shooed Ame towards her bedroom.
"Go get ready."
"Wait...where's Charming? I had him on my lap when I went to sleep."
"I'm sure he's around here somewhere," said Ruby as she led her sister to her bedroom. "Now pick out something nice to wear."
"Won't you tell me who the guests are?"
"They are our new neighbors," said Ruby. "That's all you get to know for now. Now go before I sic my fashion sense on you."
"Are you insulting yourself or..."
"GO!" said Ruby with a half chuckle as she finally got Ame to fully enter her bedroom.
With Ame finally in her bedroom and hopefully picking out something nice to wear, Ruby went to the kitchen. She was hopeful that she would have all the materials that she would need to get started and was going to prepare the best spaghetti dinner in the history of mankind.

"Would you just stand still?"
Jungkook sighed and relented to Taehyung's request as he stood in his bedroom with both of his arms out like a scarecrow. Neither of them had packed too many things since they were only planning to stay the month. It was essentially the same clothing that they had brought with them to the Valentine's Day concert plus a few more casual outfits to wear. Taehyung currently had all of Jungkook's luggage on his bed, allowing the contents inside to spread themselves out over every visible inch of the bedspread. Taehyung moved to grab up a maroon dress shirt, moving to hold it up against Jungkook's chest.
"Tae..."
"Shhhh...I'm trying to work my magic."
"Taehyung, I'm not dressing up to the nines for spaghetti."
"You could be meeting your soulmate for the first time tonight. You have to make a good first impression, especially if she is as stubborn as Ruby says. I will make you look nice whether you like it or not."
Taehyung eyed the maroon dress shirt against Jungkook before pulling it away and lying it back on the bed with the other clothes.
"Why can't I dress myself?"
"Shhh," said Taehyung again as he grabbed up another outfit in his hand; a small smile appearing on his face. "Perfect!"

Why wouldn't the water boil?
Ruby stood in the kitchen looking from the rebelling pot of water to the clock that hung above the stove. She still had an hour until they were to come over. That was still plenty of time. Moving out of the kitchen, she walked back towards Ame's bedroom to see that the door was shut. It had been that way for the last twenty minutes or so.
"Ame, are you okay in there?"
"I'm fine," she said. "These have to be some neighbors for you to be worrying this much about everything."
"I want to make a good first impression," said Ruby.
'Well,' Ruby thought. 'Second impression for me, and this time, there will definitely be no Christmas socks.'
Just as Ruby was about to walk away from Ame's bedroom door, Ame emerged from her bedroom to stand in front of her.
"You do realize I said we were having spaghetti, right?" asked Ruby as she looked at Ame in her dark blue jeans and white mock turtleneck.
"What? I wanted to be comfortable, and it's one of my favorite shirts. The new neighbors should be pleased that I put in this much effort on my sick day."
Ruby sighed, shaking her head as Ame looked about the apartment.
"You still haven't found Charming?" asked Ame with concern as she moved past her sister.
Ame didn't like not knowing where Charming was for long. She immediately went towards Ruby's open bedroom door, getting on all fours as she started to look for Charming. Ruby sighed as she watched Ame. It was then that she heard the distinct hiss of water boiling over in her pot in the kitchen.

"It's spaghetti night."
"Yes."
"And you made me wear white."
"Yes."
"On spaghetti night."
"Are you planning to miss your mouth while you eat tonight?"
"Well no."
"Then you are fine."
"Fine...but what is this?"
Taehyung sighed as Jungkook managed to criticize every part of the outfit that he had put together from Jungkook's luggage. Taehyung had picked out a pair of black jeans with strategic holes in them along with a baggy white cardigan. He had thrown in a brown scarf that he thought would look good around Jungkook's neck, but it was evident Jungkook wasn't a fan as he held a tip of it in his hands as he questioned it.
"Fine. You can go without the scarf," said Taehyung as he moved to yank it from where it was draped around Jungkook's neck.
"Yah! You could have choked me!"
"Quit being a baby! It wasn't even wrapped around your neck!"

After cleaning up the mess of water in the kitchen, Ruby had finally gotten the spaghetti noodles in the pot to start cooking and had even managed to squeak in time to get herself ready. Now all that was left was the matter of the sauce. All she had was the kind you bought in a jar at the store. She felt embarrassed heating that up and serving it to the man she had fantasized about meeting for so long.
"Stop overthinking it," said Ruby as she talked out loud to herself, "And stop talking to yourself like a freak."
She put the jar of sauce down, moving towards the fridge to see if there was anything inside that she could throw in the sauce to spruce it up. Grabbing some basil and cooked hamburgers from the night before, she pulled it out and set it on the counter. She knew then that it was time to put on her chef Ruby hat. Just as she was about to start heating up the hamburgers to add to the sauce, she heard a knock at the door. Was it that time already?
"Don't you dare throw up in the spaghetti. Calm down," said Ruby softly out loud to herself while saying in a louder voice, "AME! Could you get the door please?"

"Aren't we a couple minutes early?" asked Jungkook as he and Taehyung stood outside the door to the apartment across the hall.
Taehyung moved to consult a watch that he had on his wrist. They may be a few minutes early, but it was better to be early than late. Looking away from his watch at Jungkook, he noticed how nervous the younger was. No wonder he had been picking at everything. Reaching out a hand, he patted Jungkook's back gently.
"You're not alone. I'm going to be right beside you the entire time."
"Yeah. Yeah...I mean it's stupid to be nervous...."
"Not stupid," said Taehyung. "It's natural. Everything will go okay though. You'll see."
Both of them stopped talking as the door in front of them opened.

Ame still couldn't find Charming anywhere as Ruby called out from the kitchen to get the door for whoever was knocking. Sighing, she got up from her hand and knee search of the living room. She knew that she would have rug burn on her knees later, but it didn't matter. Her bunny mattered to her more. She never thought that would happen with her not being a pet person and everything. Charming had changed her.
Ame walked towards the door, dusting stray pieces of the rug off her knee caps before reaching out a hand to open it. Before she could look at either of the people that stood in front of her, she registered a streak of black as her bunny - suddenly given super sonic hopping abilities - tore off past her and down the stairs. He had never been loose outdoors before. Panicking, she tucked her head down, muttered quick 'excuse me's, and tore off down the stairs after her bunny.
And - of course - someone had to be entering the apartment building right then. Ame ran outside the apartment building in hot pursuit of her bunny.
- - -
"Was that a bunny?" asked Jungkook.
"Was that Ame?" asked Taehyung.
Both of them posed a different question at the same time as they turned to watch the woman tear off down the stairs after the bunny. It was then that Ruby suddenly appeared in the doorway. Before she could say anything, she noticed that someone was coming up the stairs to walk back towards their apartment. Not wanting either Jungkook or Taehyung to be spotted since they were standing in the hall with no disguises on, Ruby grabbed them by the arms, tugging them into her apartment and shutting the door.
"Was that Ame that just tore past us?" asked Taehyung as the door was shut behind them.
"Yes. Charming escaped."
"Charming?" asked Jungkook.
"It's her bunny. She brought it home with her last Valentine's Day after what her stupid fiancé did. Charming isn't usually that troublesome. He's never escaped the apartment before. I'll have to go help her look for him."
"Let me go help her instead," said Jungkook. "You can stay here with Taehyung and finish cooking."
Taehyung and Ruby both looked at Jungkook before nodding. After making sure that the apartment hallway was clear of traffic, Jungkook snuck back across the way to theirs. Once there, he grabbed a gray hoodie out of the closet. He slipped it on along with a black beanie, tinted sunglasses, and a face mask. He then moved to go downstairs and outside to see if he could figure out where Ame - a woman he had only seen once - ran off to. He figured she should be easy to spot though. He just had to look for some woman running about frantically after a bunny.
