Chapter 6: Curses & Cowardice

Amon's POV

I keep following the glowing purple arrow. I can feel my heart pounding, and it's hard to drive because my hands are still shaking so much. I can't let Milo get hurt again. He's already been through way too much.

I just drive for a while, getting increasingly anxious. I try to calm myself down a bit because I need to focus on the road, and now is the last time I wanna have a fucking accident.

I get further away from the city into a more rural environment. As I pass a big, empty-looking house on the side of the street, the arrow suddenly turns. I pull over to one side. The arrow is pointing at the house.

I take the brooch and put it back on my jacket. Then I get out of the car and rush up to the building. I can hear my own heartbeat as I'm walking up to the entrance.

Wait - I have no idea who even is in there. How many people are gonna be there? I'll probably have to fight. But that's fine. I'll do whatever it takes to get Milo out of there.

I reach the door and open it with the flick of my wrist. I slowly close it behind me, careful not to make a sound. Then I hear screaming.

My heart drops. It's Milo.

No, please tell me... please tell me they're not doing what I think. Not again.

I follow the sound of the screams through a corridor, on the verge of tears. I reach another door. The screams are coming from that room. I take a deep breath, raise my hands, and blast open the door.

Five people are standing there, and one person is floating, still screaming in pain. Milo.

Everyone's heads turn to me, and I quickly shoot an energy ball to catch Milo so he won't crash to the floor when the curse ends.

And then I see him. Caspian. I narrow my eyes. He was the one using the curse. He was hurting Milo again.

"Amon, step away. This isn't about you", Caspian says threateningly.

I scoff. "Oh, really?"

"If you walk away now, we're gonna leave you alone," he adds, his arms raised, ready to attack me.

I hesitate and then lower my arms. "Okay, fine." I turn around but then quickly turn back and shoot a blast at Caspian. He stumbles to the ground, caught off guard by my attack. Huh, I can't believe that worked. That wasn't the most advanced attack, but I suppose it did its job.

Immediately, all the other sorcerers attack me. I quickly put a shield over Milo so he won't get caught in the crossfire.

But that costs me a few seconds, and I get hit by a few attacks. I quickly put a shield all around me. I've never done this sort of shield before, but it felt so natural. The glowing purple light is surrounding me as I shoot attacks at the five sorcerers.

My anger fuels me, and I end up knocking 4 of them out. Now only Caspian is left. I narrow my eyes.

"You don't belong in the Crimson Coven," he says angrily.

"That's not true. You're the one that doesn't belong in it. You're not a leader, Caspian. You're a murderer. A torturer. You're no better than Azrael."

He raises his eyebrows. "And you're just lucky. All of that power just fell into your lap. You didn't work as hard as everyone else, you're spoiled and bratty, and you don't des-"

I blast an attack at him, and he stumbles back a few steps. "And you, you talk too much," I say and step a bit closer.

Caspian looks back at me, and for a moment, I think I can see something like fear in his eyes. I feel the blood pumping in my veins, and I have never felt more powerful than in this very moment.

I raise my arms more. I wanna see him suffer. I want him to experience the same kind of pain he put Milo through.

I wish I could use the morsus curse, but I don't know how to. You have to do something specific for that, I think, and no one ever taught me that.

I normally wouldn't use it on anyone, but I would use it on Caspian. He deserves it, more than anyone else.

Suddenly, Caspian moves his arms, and the room fills with dark, red smoke. I cough. When the smoke clears up, Caspian and all four of his henchmen are gone.

"Fucking coward," I mumble.

I turn to Milo, who is still lying on the floor, my shield still protecting him. I move my hands, and the shield disappears. I kneel down next to him.

"Milo."

He doesn't respond. He has his eyes closed and isn't moving. I think he's unconscious. I nervously check for a pulse and then check his breathing. His heart is beating, but it seems a bit slow to me.

I shake his shoulders a little, trying to wake him up. "Milo, come on," I say, and I start to get really worried. "Babe, please, wake up."

I gulp, trying to force back tears. Shit, what do I do? I only know a handful of healing spells, and none of them are for the morsus curse or something as dark as it.

"Milo, please," I say again, weakly.

I wipe a few tears away and then get my phone. I call Sophia.

"Yes?"

"I-I have a problem," I say, my voice shaking.

"What's going on? Did you find him?"

"Yes, but Caspian used the morsus curse on him."

It's quiet for a second. "Again?" Sophia asks, and her voice sounds unusually weak.

"Yes, and now he's not waking up. Caspian and the others fleed, but now Milo isn't opening his eyes anymore, and his pulse is slow a-and I'm scared, Sophia, I'm so scared-"

"Hey, hey, easy." She exhales a little. "We need to think things through now. The curse has been used on him three times now. That's bad. Really bad."

"What do you mean? How bad?" I ask, tearing up.

"I... I'm scared he might not wake up again, Amon."

Tears start streaming down my face, and I look down at my boyfriend. "No, there has to be a way, please..."

"There might be one. There's this powerful healer. Her name is Calypso. She might be able to help him. But you'll have to create a portal."

I gulp, wiping away tears. "Okay, how do I do that?"

"Alright, it's not that difficult to explain. I'll give you the coordinates, and then you have to repeat them out loud. Then you hold out your arm and start making a circle with it. Remember to believe in yourself, okay?"

I take a deep breath. "Okay, give me the coordinates."

"Give me a second. Okay, you ready?"

"Yeah."

I try to breathe slowly and deeply as Sophia starts telling me the coordinates, and then I repeat them.

"Okay, it's 62°30'27.1" North," I repeat what she said. "And 42°45'50.8" East," I repeat that part as well. Then I start making a circular motion with my arm, putting all my focus on what I want to do.

A black hole with the usual golden glow appears before me.

"It worked. Thanks."

"No problem. Please keep me posted, okay?" I think she's crying. Oh god.

"Of course. Bye, Sophia."

"Bye."

I hang up and put my phone back in my pocket. I look at Milo. God, no, I... I promised I would protect him, and I failed.

And now, he might never wake up again.

I should have taken better care of him. I should have been more careful. This is all my fault. He only left the coven because of me... He only got tortured in the first place because of me.

It's all my fault. I need to make things right again.

I need to force myself not to start sobbing. I take a deep breath. I check Milo's pulse one more time to make sure he's still alive.

Even though he is, in fact, still alive, he just looks like he could be dead, and it's freaking me out so much.

I pick him up and step through the portal. I just hope that the coordinates are right and that Calypso can help us.

I don't know what I'm gonna do if she can't heal him.

I can't lose him.
