The Child (2/6)

Shadow put his body over his shoulder, hurrying to get him to The Order. For extremely dangerous criminals, they had special cells designed to keep them in check. Many included seals for holding up demons, but right now, all of them were empty.

Shadow found the head jailer, urged him to keep Glitch's presence a secret, and to move him to the most secure cell for demons. The man didn't delay, taking two of his best assistants to fulfill the order from the S-agent.

Shadow then headed to Mr. Nigel, bursting the door without knocking. He had found his boss in the middle of paperwork.

"Mr. Nigel, I'm sorry for invading your office like this!" He took a breath. "But I've captured Silver's last opponent!"

Nigel jolted in his seat that the chair hit the window behind him. "Are you positive?"

Shadow nodded. "Absolutely. But there is more to him!" He proceeded in explaining to his boss the events of the last few hours.

"That's... unimaginable." Mister Nigel recovered his chair, sitting back. He was so preoccupied that he had forgotten to offer Shadow a cup of tea.

"I know. It makes little sense. And that leads me to my request."

The squirrel man perked his ears.

"Please, allow me to question Glitch."

"Shadow, I understand that..."

"It's not just that!" Shadow slapped his hands onto the table, it shook. "Glitch is also a victim! I've read Silver's report, and I fully understand what caused the bad blood between them. That's what had Finitevus used. For Glitch, it's taking revenge on Silver for his injuries and the subsequent death of his younger sister, but he is nothing but a toy for the mad scientist!"

Nigel remained silent. He knew how softhearted Shadow was, and his story was another proof of it. Yet, Glitch was a dangerous individual with never before seen powers. As a head of The Order, he couldn't allow risking this entire city.

Taking a deep breath, he stated, "I'll grant you one chance to persuade him into cooperation."

Shadow's face lit up.

"If you fail, we shall move to the standard procedure."

"Thank you! Thank you so much!"

Shadow pivoted, dashing out of the door, having to return after a few steps to close it and mumbling an apology. He hurried all the way to the most secure prison cell they had.

Once the demon entered it, the seals kept sucking their power while completely immobilizing their limbs. The chambers were big enough to fit in more people as questioning took place there, as moving demons to a different room could provide them a chance to escape.

Entering the well-lit hallway, Shadow dashed before stopping. Barely audible steps paused a few meters behind him. The priest looked over his shoulder, knowing who this person was.

"Silver!"

"Took you long enough to notice me." A poison seeped into the psychic's voice. "Now, if you excuse me—"

"No!" Shadow spread his arm, blocking the way. "I won't let you take a step forward!"

Silver's aura enveloped him, giving him a menacing feel. "I'll make you move!"

"I have Mister Nigel's full consent to question him." The priest tried to keep his voice calm, but he couldn't prevent it from raising.

"But not the means to make him talk!" Silver stepped forward, enveloping Shadow in his powers.

He tightened his fists, ripping the clothes all over, but Shadow refused to move. The psychic increased the pressure, but Shadow spent years being his punching bag.

"You!" Silver growled through his bared teeth.

"Any more, and you can start the alarm, Silver."

The amber eyes twitched, knowing Shadow wasn't bluffing. In case of a prison break, the seals embedded into the walls could detect a certain level of spiritual or demonic energy, triggering an alarm in case of emergency.

"Then move!" the psychic barked.

"I know what had happened between you two, but Glitch is also a victim here."

In Silver's eyes, he had seen an urge to bite his head off, but he couldn't let the psychic pass. He would rip Glitch into shreds.

Instead of pressing further, Silver retracted his hands, releasing the priest of his psionic grasp. He shook, fuming, surpassing his anger.

"An hour..."

Shadow's ears twitched.

Silver growled. "I give you one hour to make him talk. Then! I take over!"

"I understand."

Silver turned around, walking away. Shadow let out a deep breath, following the path.

Outside, Silver needed to take a lot of breaths, to calm a bit, yet the rage boiled inside of him. He hated himself and how his anger was taking control of him. The psychic detested that voice in his mind, telling him to rip Shadow into pieces.

He stopped in an empty corridor somewhere near the headquarters. Pressing his hands on his eyes, he tried to stop himself from seeing red.

"Guess who?" Two hands placed onto his back, filling him with warmth.

He spun around with his eyes wide as plates. Behind him stood the person he earned to see for so long.

"Silve—" Gold didn't finish his name as he pulled her closer, deeply kissing her.

A blush crept all over the tenrec's face, and her hands held Silver. After they needed to breathe, he let her go, red over his muzzle too.

Jerking his body back, Silver turned into a beetroot. "I-I'm sorry! I don't know what—"

This time it was Gold's turn to silence him with a kiss. Only now, she was gentle. Breaking it after a few smooches, Silver hugged her, burying his face into her quills.

"I missed you so much."

"Me too."

They held each other until Gold's stomach rumbled.

"Let's go grab dinner. I didn't have one myself yet." Silver let go of her.

"Don't tell me you are skipping your meals?" she chided him in a friendly manner.

"Actually..." He scratched on his cheek, counting how many meals he had skipped in the last days, finding none. He practiced his Psi Bomb, needing all the food he could find. "I skipped none."

"That's good to hear."

She let him lead her to the restaurant where they could have a moment for themselves.

"I'll help you resume your search," she said after the waitress placed their maxi-sized orders. "I was in a secluded area, so I didn't manage to find anything useful."

Silver was eating in silence for a few moments. "You have just returned, right? I know some trains are quite comfy, but you must be still tired. Would you like to go for some... clothes shopping, or just see what they got in store. I'll accompany you."

Gold's face widened in shock. Not just her grumpy partner offered her to go shopping with her, he was smiling, and he made a pun. He had always put the search for his missing mother in second place right after successfully completing his mission.

"Are you sure?" she asked.

"Yes, as always."

She eyed him, suspicious if this was Silver she had known for so long. When she found him in the side-street, he emitted a dark aura, but right now, he was radiating like a small sun. However, it wasn't just because she had returned.

"It's true, I would like to take a bit of rest," Gold started, "but are you really fine with it? We are searching for your mother for so long."

He stabbed the meatball on his plate, keeping it that way as if he waited for it to scream.

"That can wait one more day." His voice shook, showing his genuine desire. Gold opened her mouth, but he changed the topic. "I suppose you know Amy was my partner, right?"

She nodded.

"She and her partner, Eclipse," he had said it as if it wasn't her who recommended them to fill in as his temporal partners. "Grew a lot. They work well together, and we had completed a few missions." He played with his spaghetti, rolling them at his fork.

Continuing, he added, "Of course, she isn't as helpful as you. She keeps bugging me, annoying me with small things, and she is way too naïve towards demons. Eclipse is also doing fine..."

Gold listened to him with a small smile.
