Chapter 31- Edward

My bones were healed. Just like that I could stand up and move around. Nothing hurt. Nothing at all. Except maybe my head. Dr Brand was still attacking me, showing me visions of my worst nightmares. It was scary how he could manipulate my vision.

That morning, Nick came to see me. I was talking to him like normal and then he suddenly changed into Dr Brand. Of course I knew that it was all fake but even then it scared me to death. After that fiasco, Nick decided that he should take me to the front lines where he could keep an eye on me, as he said.

As I left my room, the girl that I had been watching last night looked up at me in astonishment. "You were ill, they told us!" She cried. "They said you had broken bones. How are you walking?" Nick glanced at me like 'this is your department' .  I shook my head at him and motioned for him to go on. I bent down the girl's height stiffly as I still had some brutal bruises.

"They gave me some special medicine that fixed them really quickly," I explained. "I'm still not that well but they thought that I should be able to walk."

"How can that medicine heal broken bones?" The girl asked. I looked over at Nick who was tapping his foot impatiently.

"I don't know," I said. "But I've got to go now." As I turned the girl caught my wrist. I winced a bit but didn't let her see.

"Can you find out if my parents are OK?" She asked, her face full of tension. "They're names are Selena and Jacob Mars." I nodded slowly. The girls face relaxed a bit.

"Here," she said. A cool sensation spread over me like a calm wave on a beach. The pain from the bruises and the stiffness disappeared. "There," the girl said. "That should last about six hours."

"Your power is like a painkiller?" I said, rolling my shoulders in disbelief.

"Yeah," the girl said. "Come back when it wears off." She walked away and left me. I went over to Nick as if I was in a trance. I asked him who she was.

"That's Emily," Nick replied. "She can take pain away from anyone."

"Useful," I pointed out.

"But she's only fourteen. I'm not going to put her out in the front line hospitals. I'm not going to do that to any of the kids," Nick said.

"Tess and I are out there," I said. "Tess is even younger than her."

"But you're different," Nick shouted. "You're the reason we're in this war!" I stared at him in disbelief. I couldn't believe Nick's outburst. "I'm sorry, Edward," Nick sighed. "I'm a bit tired and stressed. I know its not your fault. In fact, you gave us this chance of freedom. I shouldn't have yelled."

"It's fine, your under a lot of stress," I said in a gentle and forgiving tone. "How about we got to the Commander, yeah?" Nick lead me out of the bunker and to a truck waiting outside. We hopped inside and it drove us to the front lines, about two miles out.

"Oh God," I breathed as we drove up the dirt road and came in sight of the Changed's front lines. There were lines of tents packed up against each other on the grass that was quickly turning to mud. About six hundred metres down the valley was the golden dome where the government hid. The truck stopped with a screech and me and Nick got out the back. Many of the adults were sitting on wooden stools outside their tents. Some of them eyed me cautiously, some angrily while the rest just looked sad. "Nick," I whispered as we walked. "Jacob and Selena Mars, are they alive?" Nick hesitated.

"Yes, Selena is nursing Jacob in the hospital tent. It's a mile off here where it should be safe at the moment," he replied.

"I can't do this, Nick," I said in a shaky voice. The eyes of the people were all on me. My legs were beginning to buckle. Nick got a firm grip on my arm with one hand, the other against he small of my back supportively. We took me through the rows of tents until we got to a large one in the middle of the group. Nick marched inside, ignoring the guards and practically dragging me in. Inside, there was a big wooden, polished table where the Commander sat studying maps and looking very tired. She looked up at us. I was startled by her bloodshot eyes. "Hello Edward," she said. "Good to see you looking better. Please take a seat." I sank into the the seat opposite her while Nick slid into the seat next to her. He pulled the maps from her towards him. "Where are we then?" He asked her, rubbing his eyes.

"I'm planning the next attack in four hours time," the Commander said.

"Can we afford that?" Nick said.

"We can't just stay here forever," she said.

"And we can't just launch ourselves at them," I said. "Believe me, I spent time with them. I know you think I was out of it when the government had me but I've seen what they have. If you go at them then they'll come out with double the force. They're weapons have got better. If you want to defeat them, your going to have to be clever about it. This is no ordinary war."

"We know that, Mr Halister, but we have no other way," the Commander said.

"My sister and your son are out there," I said. "I know Tess, she won't give up. She'll get he job done. As soon as she and Caleb get the shield down, then go in. You need a distraction. Call Frost to a meeting. While you're talking, hide your troops in the hills. Then as soon as Tess and Caleb get the shield down, signal the troops to make in. The government won't stand a chance, even with-" I cut of abruptly and gripped the edges of the table. A smooth, silky voice had filled my head. Dr Brand.

"Edward-" Nick started and moved towards me. Before he reached me, the scene around me changed. I was in the same room where Dr Brand tortured me. He was sitting on his chair by the table that I always laid on smiling that evil smile. His skin looked yellow and papery. "Hello Edward."

"Get out of my head," I growled at him.

"I'm not technically in your head," he pointed out. "We haven't had a good chat in a while."

"I don't care," I said. I could hear Nick's voice crying out from inside my head. I knew that he was trying to get me back. I focussed on that.

"You should do. I have your sister," Dr Brand said. I bit my lip, determined not to give him a reaction.

"You won't hurt her. You need her," I said.

"True, however-" he broke off and looked behind him like he was talking to someone. I took this opportunity to focus Nick's voice, trying to pull me back. Dr Brand turned back to me. "It seems your sister had escaped." I let a small smile play across my lips.

"You underestimated her."

"Maybe. But she had help," Dr Brand murmured. "I'm afraid I'll have to leave you, Edward. But we'll speak again. Either in your head or maybe face to face." He and the room faded. I blinked. My nails had made marks in the table and my jaw was clenched tight. Nick was in front of me, looking worried. "What did he say to you?" He asked.

"Wait, what's going on?" The Commander asked. Nick quickly explained my...situation... She looked shocked. Nick turned back to me. I told him everything that Dr Brand said to me. Nick smiled slightly.

"I sent Cain in. It seems he somehow got past the shield and is helping Caleb and Tess," Nick said. "If only we could get a message to them. Tell the the plan."

"What if we could?" I said slowly. "All I need to do is sleep a bit and I'll be able to talk to Tess using telepathy. All you need to do is call a meeting with Frost."
