Bryn Hafer - Task Two

"Man, this is brutal!" My roommate, Leonidas, complains.
"First, they take you in for interrogation, and now this?"
"You realize I'm right here..."
The officer in our dorm replies. I sigh.
"Yeah..." Leonidas replies, obviously pissed. "But it doesn't make it untrue. It sucks to be monitored so completely." The officer laughs.
"Got something to hide?"
"Yeah," Leonidas replies. "You got me," he raises his arms in mock surrender. "Seriously, we're the two nerdiest, study-focused kids you've ever seen," he implores. "We got here because of hard work, in school for me, and in sports and academics for Bryn... We didn't kill anyone."
The officer takes this in, and his face changes from the stoney, emotionless face to something else. Pity.
"Look, kids... I don't think you two have anything to do with this.. But orders are orders. Perhaps this doesn't have to be so bad..."
"It couldn't possibly get worse!" Leonidas replies, fuming. "This is invasive..."
"It won't last long..." The officer promises. "Just be good and i'll send in a good report to the chief. You two will be fine."
I had no intentions of being good.
Later that night, Leonidas is asleep, and so is the officer. But I can't sleep, and I'm in the mood to do something bad. For once. I've been interrogated for a crime I didn't commit, I've been harassed most of my life for my intelligence, and called a cheat by teachers for my photographic memory.
Time to pay it forward.
I creep down the dark halls of the school, taking pauses occasionally to stop, and listen for any kind of footprints. But no voice shouts at me to stop; no hand yanking me back.
So I proceed around, heading down the stairs, towards the front door of the school. No officers stand guard, and I push the front door open, intending to get outside for a breath of fresh air, undisturbed, and maybe find something to do. 'No end of boredom at this school...'
When a loud alarm sounds. 'The school's security system... Crap!!!' I panic; a deer in the headlights for a second, as I hear footsteps approaching in the distance, and a loud, robotic voice saying: 'Front door; intruder. Front door; intruder.'
"Spread out! Find whoever it is!" A commanding voice booms. I find myself at the mercy of a choice. Return inside and get caught, or hide outside.
I go with the latter, quickly diving behind a bush, and peeking over as officers swarm the front hall like mosquitos to flesh.
"Lock all the doors again," the commanding officer says. "And patrol the halls. If he's outside, he's locked out. If he's inside.... He's busted." My eyes widen as the door is relocked. 'Not getting back in that way...'
I realize that this is a very bad time for me to be sneaking around the school. I never should have let my inner rebel, that I never allow free roam, to do as he pleases. My eyes dart around wildly. 'This sounds like something that would happen in a horror movie. Except the killer should be right behind me at this moment.'
Once the heat is off, I leave the bush area, brushing dirt off my clothes. 'Okay... So all the doors are locked.' I look around for the windows, and realize that Leonidas and I left ours unlocked. But it's on the second floor. I circle the school, and look up at the open window, sitting tauntingly up high.
'No choice but to climb it...' I slowly grab a brick that has a small grip, and another. Slowly making my way up.
I make the mistake of looking down at the concrete below, and my mind replays the first death. He fell to his doom. 'Don't let that be me next...'
Miraculously, I slip in through the open window, and into my bed. Just as the door to our dorm opens.
"Room check!" The officer in charge of us groggily looks at the commander.
"All good, sir..." The door closes, and I giggle to myself. That was dangerous. I won't do that again. 'But it WAS fun...'
