Chapter 27 ~ Making Up

Seeing the house I was raised in for one year really hit me hard. It was weird looking at what the house looked like in 1981, more specifically, the night my parents were murdered.

As Voldemort continued to make his way towards the house, we watched helplessly. "Voldemort is going to kill our parents, Max, and there's nothing we can do to stop him."

"That's not true," Scorpius stated.

"Son, now is not the time..." Draco said to our son.

"There is something you two could do, but you won't," Albus told us.

Ginny took Harry's hand. "That's heroic."

"Yeah, it is," Draco added, gripping my hand tightly. "We don't have to watch, you know. We can go home."

"We're letting it happen, Draco," I told him, turning his way. "Of course we have to watch."

"Then we'll all witness it," Hermione said firmly.

With that, we watched through the window of the house where Dad was running frantically towards Mum, telling her about taking us while he held Voldemort off. Suddenly, a blast was heard and seen, followed by an evil laugh. The green light flashing made Harry and I flinch. I squeezed Draco's hand, breathing heavily.

"It's okay," he whispered.

I nodded my head. "I know."

Once it was all over, we took Delphi and traveled back to the present with the Time-Turner. Ron and Hermione took Delphi to the Ministry while the rest of us headed back to Hogwarts to drop Albus and Scorpius off. When we arrived at the Slytherin Dungeon, Harry and Ginny went upstairs, so the three of us stayed down in the Slytherin Common Room.

"Mum, Dad..." Scorpius started, sitting on the couch as Draco and I kneeled in front of him and each took one of his hands. "I'm sorry," he blurted out, at the verge of tears. "I'm sorry for all of this."

"We know," Draco stated. "We're sorry, too."

"For what?" Scorpius asked, sniffling.

"For failing as parents, that's what," I answered. "Your father and I were so caught up in our problems that we didn't pay any attention to you. We didn't mean to make you feel lonely, Scorpius."

"I know," he said. "I wish you two would stop fighting already."

Draco huffed a sigh. "We know that our separation upsets you--"

"So fix it!" he spat out in frustration, then quickly composed himself. "Sorry. But now that we stopped Delphi and we're all safe, there's no excuse for you two to not sit down and talk to each other about your marriage."

I sighed. "Yes, you're right," I agreed with him, nodding my head.

Scorpius nodded his head as well. "Good. I hope we can be a family again."

Draco gave him an assuring smile. "We will."

Scorpius smiled, too, which I missed seeing. He yawned, stretching his arms. "Well, I'm worn out. All this time-traveling and saving the world has been exhausting."

"Don't I know that feeling," I muttered. "We love you, Scorpius. You know that, right?"

"Yes, I do," he said, nodding his head. "I love you guys, too."

We hugged our son, then pulling away, standing up and giving Scorpius one last smile before leaving the Slytherin Common Room. We were silent, making things tense and awkward all at once.

"So..." I began to say, not sure where I was going with it.

"So..." he repeated, sounding just as awkward as I was.

"We're able to talk now," I stated.

"Yeah," he added.

"Can we go back to Grimmauld Place real quick? I have to go get my stuff."

He nodded his head. "Sure."

We headed out of Hogwarts and Apparated to Grimmauld Place. I entered inside first, followed by Draco. I went to the living room and gathered my things.

"I don't have much, so it won't take long," I explained.

"Do you ever think about all the memories in this house?" Draco questioned.

"Of course I do," I replied. "That's really all there's left in this house."

"Oh, right," was all he said as he looked around.

"Does it bother you that Delphi is your cousin?" I asked, a bit curious.

He shrugged his shoulders. "Sort of. I never really thought about it. Either way, she's a monster, just like the rest of my family."

I looked at him. "Not all of them," I said. "Your mother isn't."

He slightly chuckled. "No, she's not. We must go visit her soon."

I nodded in agreement as I got the rest of my things and headed back to the house with Draco. It felt odd, bringing back all of my things for me to stay. I could tell that Draco was content with this, as if his life was almost back to the way he wanted it, the way we wanted it.

I followed Draco up to our bedroom. "Okay, so now what?" I asked, placing my things on the floor by the dresser.

"We talk, I guess," he answered.

I huffed a sigh in annoyance. "Oh, no..."

"What?"

"All of this build-up for this conversation and now we don't know what to do next?"

"Well, what are we going to do? Say, 'I'm sorry' and then have make-up sex?"

"Apparently, that's what everyone else thinks."

"I mean-- wait, everyone?"

"That's exactly what I said!"

He shook his head, scoffing. "I wonder what else they've said about us."

"I don't know, but I'm going to ask Hermione about it at work tomorrow."

Draco sighed, sitting down on the bed. "Do you know what my Patronus is?" he asked me out of nowhere.

Confused, I went to sit beside him. "No. You never told me what it was," I responded.

"That's because I was never able to produce one," he admitted. "You see, I didn't have a happy memory in order to produce a Patronus. It took me a long time to find a happy memory that was strong enough."

"Yeah? What is it?"

He turned and looked at me. "It's the day you and I got married."

I felt my heart skip a beat. "Really?"

He nodded his head. "Yeah. I knew that I was going to enjoy the rest of my life, because I was going to spend it with you. I was finally happy with my life, and I was even happier when Scorpius was born and we were finally a family, just like we wanted."

"So what is your Patronus?" I asked.

He grabbed his wand from his pocket and cleared his throat, waving his wand in the air. "Expecto Patronum," he said, pointing at the ceiling. I had expected his Patronus to be a snake or even a bloody dragon. But the animal that formed in the air was definitely something I did not expect at all.

"It...it's a doe," I said in shock, my mouth wide open, looking at the doe prancing around us. "Just like mine."

"Yes," he simply stated. "I was confused when I first conjured it, so I looked it up. According to the book I found, Patronuses can change form if you already have a Patronus after falling in love. Obviously for me, I was never able to do this before, so this is my first ever Patronus. But the Patronus usually revolves around the person the caster is in love with, so it's a doe because of you, because I love you.

"I remember the alternate timeline Scorpius told us about, the one where you were dead. For three days, I was living in grief and I was alone, so bloody alone, and I don't want to feel that way again."

I felt a lump in my throat, my heart dropping. "I don't want to be alone, either."

The doe dissolved as Draco placed his wand on the nightstand and pulled me in for a hug. "Honestly, I don't think we stopped loving each other. I think our anger was just consuming us."

I nodded my head in agreement, feeling his embrace and making me realize how much I missed this. I also missed the way Draco kissed me in the mornings. I missed it when he would pull me in for hugs without warning me. I missed being a family. I missed everything.

I pulled away, a few tears falling down my face. "What has happened to us, Draco?" I asked. "I never wanted this for us."

"Neither of us did," he replied. "Every marriage goes through some rough patches, you know."

"I know, but the things we said to each other...we can't take those back."

He sadly nodded his head. "I know, Max."

I huffed a sigh, furiously wiping the tears from my eyes. The crying was about to get worse, but I did my best to compose myself. "I don't know what came over me. I was so mad at you for everything you said to me, I really was." I sniffled, then continued. "But as the search for Scorpius and Albus went on and the whole thing with Delphi, I realized that I really could've been wiped out from history."

"I know, and a world without you in it just..." He choked up a bit. "Apart from Scorpius, I'd have nothing, because you've always been my world."

I bit my lip. "You know, when you love someone so much, you can't let go of them." I paused, feeling more tears fall down my face. "I can never let go of you, Draco."

Draco gulped, tears falling down his face. "I can never let go of you, either, Max." He pressed his forehead against mine, closing his eyes. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry for hurting you."

"I'm sorry, too," I whispered.

"I love you so much," he added.

I closed my eyes, weeping softly. "I love you, too." I let out a small chuckle. "I'm still a disaster, even at this age."

Draco chuckled back. "We both are. But you're still my disaster."

We stayed quiet for a bit, trying to take in this moment as much as we could. I took my forehead off of his and gazed at him, biting my lip. "When's the last time we kissed?" I asked. I honestly didn't know the answer to this.

"I have no idea," he confessed. "But it's been a while."

"Well, obviously," I teased, playfully rolling my eyes and smiling at Draco.

He smiled back. "So, is this the part where we kiss or...?"

Shaking my head, I grabbed his face and planted a firm kiss on his lips. He slowly began to kiss me back, placing his hands on both sides of my face. I totally forgot what kissing him was like, the sparks that ignited whenever our lips touched, the electricity running through my veins. I even forgot the way my heart would almost pop out of my chest.

After the kiss, we gazed into each other's eyes. "Merlin, I've missed that," Draco whispered.

"So have I," I replied. "I've missed you."

"Same," he said. "We shouldn't have said those things to each other. It seems like we're saying that over and over again, doesn't it?"

I giggled. "Yeah, it does. Maybe it's just the word vomit or something."

Draco let out a chuckle and smiled at me. "We wouldn't be together right now if it wasn't for your word vomit."

I scoffed. "Oh, please. You would've chased after me if I hadn't visited you in the Hospital Wing that night."

Draco smiled again. "You're absolutely right about that."

I grinned at Draco. "You were desperate, weren't you?"

Draco took my hand. "You have no idea."

I sighed and smiled at Draco. "We can be a family again, for good this time."

"I like the sound of that."

"I do, too."

He gave me a peck on the lips. "Now what?"

"Well..." I started to say, my fingers trailing down his shirt. "We can start on that make-up sex."

He smirked. "Didn't you say we were too old for that?"

I chuckled. "Someone once told me that you're never too old to have a little fun," I stated, mocking him from years before.

Smiling, he pulled me in for another searing kiss.
