The Original

Okay, maybe not the original. Probably not the original. But at circa two thousand years old, this little Celtic figurine's mullet could well be in the ballpark. Although, did they have balls in those days? The rockpark?

As far as mullets go, it's not the most spectacular, but according to the archaeologists who made the discovery, it qualifies. And hey, who am I to argue with the experts? It seems mullets were just as hot in the 0080s as the 1980s.

And one theory runs that the 'business at the front and party at the back' style may have been popular in even earlier times, due to its ability to keep the neck warm in cold climes, while leaving the eyes unimpeded for hunting mammoths, avoiding sabre-toothed badgers and finding your way back to the cave, not to mention negotiating the other assorted challenges of the prehistoric day.

Sounds legit. Although, quite frankly, I'm surprised people back then had the time and energy and enthusiasm (and equipment) to cut any bits of their hair, never mind all of it. In any case, thank goodness for the invention of the scarf.

So, a score. Let's see. The little guy's mullet is not egregious, as far as those things go, and—to give him the benefit of the doubt—perhaps there were reasons beyond fashion for his questionable coiffure. Mullet-O-Meter™ says:-
