Chapter 9

I smiled back at her. I'm happy I saved Lauren's life. She's a good addition to our community. She definitely keeps me happy. She is one of the people we don't talk about her, only if I'm talking about her. She knows what it's like. I see her as a best friend. I put my left hand on her right shoulder and looked into her eyes.

"Thank you" I said after Lauren told me that Hunter is watching.

I heard horses behind me galloping toward me. I turned around and saw Cooper on our wagon from the Adelaide Oval.

"Sam! We need you back at the Adelaide Oval" Cooper said.

"Why?" I asked.

"We found a new survivor. You need to come back and brief her" Cooper said.

"Ok" I said.

I hugged Lauren.

"Could you tell Megan and Samantha where I am if they ask?" I asked.

"Sure" Lauren said.

"Thank you" I said getting onto the wagon.

Cooper turned around straight away and started heading toward the Adelaide Oval.

"Why couldn't you just use the walkie talkie?" I asked.

"We tried but you didn't answer. I think your walkie talkie could be out of charge" Cooper said.

I picked up my walkie talkie and held down the on button. It didn't turn on.

"Shit. Where running out of batteries fast. Soon we are going to have to use messengers like you" I said.

"We need to save the batteries for the fair as well. We should look over what we have again. Maybe hope one of the other communities are stocked up" Cooper said.

"Yeah. So what's the name of the survivor?" I said.

"Her name is Debra. She's been out on her own for about nine months I think. That's all she told me" Cooper said.

"Did she cause a fuss, or did she seem off in someway" I said.

"Well I guess you will have to find out, but she seemed fine" Cooper said.

"Ok" I responded.

We got back in no time because Cooper was going pretty fast. The gates opened and we rode in. I quickly jumped out and saw Tyler on the way in. He stood up quickly.

"Did you find him?" Tyler asked.

"We haven't yet. But we aren't done looking yet" I said.

Tyler's excitement slowly turned into sadness as he sat back down. Cooper ran up beside me.

"She's just over there" Cooper said pointing to a bench she was sitting on.

I walked over to her and sat down. I looked up at her. She was bald and looked really clean like she had just cleaned herself. She looked up at me and smiled.

"You're the leader?" Debra asked.

"I am. My name is S.." I said.

"Sam yes I know. I'm Debra" She said interrupting me.

"I know" I said.

"How old are you?" Debra asked.

"I'm Eighteen" I said.

"So you were Fourteen when this all started?" Debra asked.

"I was. We keep a calendar here that we mark everyday. It might not be very accurate though but it's close enough" I said.

"You're pretty young to lead aren't you?" Debra asked.

"These people decided to follow me. I didn't volunteer. They just looked to me. Even the adults. So no I'm not to young to lead. Enough about me. I want to know about you" I said.

"What would you like to know?" Debra asked.

"When was the last time you came across a place like this?" I asked.

"I would say around two years ago. I've been moving since this all started. I started in Perth and I slowly made my way here over the years. There was a place like this in Perth. But they got attacked by another group. I was the only one to make it out alive" Debra said.

"I'm sorry to hear that. How long where you alone for after that?" I said.

"Well I found a group of five and we stayed together for a while. But they tried to kill me. So I had to kill them to survive. But after that seven months" Debra said.

"I've had to do the same. But can I ask you something?" I asked.

"Yeah" Debra said.

"You told my friend you were alone for nine months. Why did you just say seven months then?" I asked.

"I did. I meant to say nine. I've been alone so long that I'm not very good at talking to anyone, other then myself of course" Debra said.

She seemed like she was lying a little. I had a weird feeling about her.

"Anything else?" Debra asked.

"How did you find us?" I asked.

"I was walking along the Torrens River and saw your people walking in through the gate" Debra said.

"Ok. That's all. I will get someone to get you set up here. Maybe you can come down to Port Adelaide to help with something we are building" I said.

"Ok" Debra said.

"I'll see you later" I said.

I walked away toward Cooper who was waiting for me. We walked together towards the guard tower.

"What did you think?" Cooper asked.

"She seems a little off. She was out there alone for that long. I think she would be a little different then she is. She seems like she's been with people. Could you keep an eye on her" I asked.

"Of course" Cooper said.

"Thank you Cooper" I said.

I turned around and headed back towards the benches. I saw Bethany. Megan's old teacher. I walked up to her.

"Hey. I was wondering if you could get Debra set up. She just needs a room, and could you teach her a little about the rules" I asked.

"Yeah I can do that" Bethany said.

"Ok, thanks Bethany" I said.

I walked toward the graves. I walked straight to Hunters grave and squatted down. I put my hand on her grave and closed my eyes.

"I love you more" I said.

I stood up and walked up to the stands. I sat down on one of the seats and looked out at my people. I still can't believe how far we have all come. I loved these people. As family. I would protect them all no matter the cost.
