Chapter 2
"Let us in!" An angry parent yelled.
"Please we cannot allow you anywhere near your children. Educational departments across Australia have all been told to lock down. No one can enter, no one can leave" Mr . Harris said.
All the parents were shaking the fence violently trying to push it down to get through. They were all going crazy. They wanted their children. It made me feel kind of sad.
"We just want our children! This is illegal! You can't do this! Open the fucking gates!" Another parent yelled.
I could see the anger in his eyes and the pure frustration he had. He really wanted his kid. But Mr. Harris is right. If we don't want this to spread we are gonna have to stay away from others for a little while.
"Come on, you know that what we are doing is for the wellbeing of you, of your child and of others. Your children are safe here! We have plenty of food, water, supplies, we have everything here. You just need to trust us!" Mr. Harris yelled.
I looked down the gate at all the parents. They all started trying to call to their children. A few of them ran over to their parents but a lot of them stayed back away from them. Of course my dad wasn't here. My dad would never be this emotional to get me back. He's not like that. He wasn't always the best father, but he was worse after the accident, after my mum died.
"Hey step away!" Ms. Haywood yelled at a student hugging their mum behind the fence.
"Please do not make any contact with your child! Please leave now, or else we will have to call the Police!" Mr. Harris yelled.
"We don't care! Let's us in you old hag!" A parent yelled.
I looked over and I saw Alleigh and Kiara with their parents. They were crying, hugging their parents.
"Screw this!" A parent yelled.
He started trying to climb the fence. He got to the very top when Mr. Harris ran over to get him off.
"Stop! Get down now!" Mr. Harris yelled.
It was scary. All the teachers ran over trying to push the parent back over. A lot of parents tried to climb over, a lot of them couldn't. But about three of them were able to get to the top of the fence. That's when I started to hear screaming.
I looked over and I saw one of the parents being bitten by a man. The parent was shaking their arm up and down trying to make the person lose their grip. They wouldn't let go. It was like a dog holding onto a bone.
Suddenly people pulled the man off of the parent as the parent quickly held their arm. There was blood running down their arm.
"Mum!" A student yelled.
People tackled the man down who bit the parent as her son ran up to the fence to see if she was ok. I looked at the man. His eyes, they didn't look normal. He had blood dripping out of his mouth from biting the parent and was trying to bite the others holding him down.
I was shocked at what I was witnessing. I was just standing still watching this all unfold. This virus is changing people. It's making people go crazy.
Everyone looked down the road as we herd a loud noise roaring down the street. It was a car speeding. The car was going fast. The car sped down the road past us. The car had luggage all packed on top of the car and inside the car.
I focused back on the struggling parents. That's when I saw the man being held down bite another parent. The parent let go of him as everyone lost grip of him and he got up. All the parents were trying to push him away from them. But one parent pushed him into another parent. That's when the man bit at his neck.
"Kids! Get inside now!" Mr. Harris yelled.
"Come on guys inside! Inside now!" Ms. Haywood yelled waving us to all go back inside.
I saw Alleigh and Kiara being dragged away from their parents. They were dragged inside, and I was pushed inside by a teacher. The teachers quickly locked the doors behind us as every student got inside. I looked back outside as I saw a whole bunch of parents either running away or fighting with people trying to bite them.
"Come on Sam" Ms. Haywood said pushing me away from the glass door.
I continued to walk down the hallway as I saw Mr. Harris walk out in front of me.
"Everyone go to your home group classes, your teachers will join you later. Teachers stay here with me please" Mr. Harris said.
I watched down the corridor seeing all the students slowly pile into their home group class. We were down the year eight corridor so a lot of students kept walking down the hallway to get to their year level corridor. Mr. Harris turned around and looked at me.
"Come on, get to your class and await further instructions" Mr. Harris said.
I walked past him walking down the hallway slowly. I made it to my home group class, 8.3, the third year right home group class out of five. As I walked in I could see Kiara and Alleigh sitting together looking at the floor. They looked really upset. I could hear crying from other classes and yelling from many students.
I sat down on Alleigh and Kiara's table and I looked up at them. They didn't look up at me. They were too sad about their parents. I put my hands out for Kiara and Alleigh to hold. They both held my hands. I tried comforting them. I'm not very good at it. I guess that's the reason I'm single.
I could see tear drops falling down their cheeks onto the desk. It was hard to watch my friends sad like this. I know how they feel. I've been there. When my mother died. I wanted to be left alone, I didn't want anyone talking to me. So I didn't talk to them. Even though their parents are still alive. I get what they are feeling.
Ms. Sadedin our home group teacher walked in and closed the door behind her. She slowly sat down on a desk at the front of the room. She tapped her hands on the table.
"Ok. So we have been told that we have to split you all up for temporary sleeping rooms, I know it may sound scary but it's temporary. All that's going on will be over soon. We will be back to our normal lives. I'm sorry you couldn't be with your families. I can't see my kids either, but I just want you to know that we are doing this for all of your safety and for our safety. I hope you understand" Ms. Sadedin said.
Everyone was quiet. All I could hear was a few sniffles every now and then from students who were crying. I could hear screaming outside. It must be the parents who are out there. I hope they are ok.
Ms. Sadedin stood up and walked over to the cupboard in the corner of the classroom. She looked inside and brought out an old boom box. She put it onto her desk.
"How about some music?" Ms. Sadedin said.
Ms. Sadedin turned on the boom box and switched it to the radio. She turned up the volume and it opened with a news channel. She changed the dial to get another channel. But every channel was the news. She just left it on the news.
"Please, this is from all of us. Stay home, do not leave. Not for anything. Not even for food. Do not leave for any reason. This isn't a normal virus. I have a man here who experienced the effects of the virus first hand" the radio host said.
"Hello, sorry if I'm a bit slow. I'm not feeling too well, but trust me it's not the virus. It's just a common cold" the man said.
"So what was it like? What did you see?" The radio host said.
"It was crazy man. There were dead bodies all over the ground. I was in Rundle Mall. There were heaps of people tending to people laying on the floor or injured. I don't know what this virus does, but it changes people. People who get it change. They die within a matter of a few hours, and then they wake back up" The man said.
"What do you mean they wake back up?" The radio host asked.
"I don't know man! They die and they just come back to life! I don't know how! They just do! Then they go crazy. You should see their eyes man! They then chase you. They walk slow, but then never stop. They just kept coming. They were biting people, one of them bit me. I ran away as fast as I could. The world is ending" The man said.
"There you have it guys. Apparently the virus is making people turn into crazy cannibals! Get this guy out of here" The radio host said.
"Hey! I'm telling the truth! I'm telling the fucking truth!" The man yelled.
"Well, he's gone. Let's cheer everyone up and play something funky!" The radio host said.
A song started to play that I didn't know the name of. But it was the typical son that's played on the radio every ten minutes. Ms. Sadedin stood up at the front just looking at the ground. She didn't know what to say, or what to do.
Someone knocked on our door and walked in. It was Mr. Harris. He looked around the room then looked at Ms. Sadedin. He stood at the front of the room.
"Ms. Sadedin has probably told you this already, but you will all be given a temporary room to sleep in. We have a lot of rooms but we are gonna try to use as less as we can. No uni-sex sleeping arrangements thank you. They girls can sleep in this room. Boys pleas all follow me" Mr. Harris said.
I stood up walking out with the other boys in my class. I walked with Josh out through the classroom and into a classroom across from us. There were other boys inside. The teachers had pushed all the tables to the side of the room and had put out a few pillows they got from the library.
"Pick a spot and that will be where you will be sleeping tonight" Mr. Harris said.
I just sat down on the ground as every student quickly ran to try to get a pillow. I watched on as they all grabbed the pillows violently.
"Stop fighting! Who ever gets a pillow first they keep it! Once you found your spot please make your way out to the STEM corridor" Mr. Harris said walking out.
The STEM corridor is a new corridor that was built recently and it just opened. It's a huge open area for open classrooms with huge TVs on the walls.
I stood up and walked towards the STEM corridor. Alleigh and Kiara both walked up beside me and walked with me. We came across the entire school, Year eight to twelve, all sitting down awaiting for Mr. Harris to start talking. As everyone came in Mr. Harris walked to the front of us and looked at us.
"I know you may be scared. But we are going to look after you all. It's our responsibility. You will be sleeping the rooms we assigned you in and we will be having breakfast at nine o'clock in the morning and dinner at seven at night. I would also like to assign year level leaders. Every year level will have a leader. If you are in need of someone to talk to, go to them. If anyone would like to become one come and see me. This won't be forever. I'm thinking this would all blow over in a month. It's just going to be like a fun little camping trip, except here. Thank you guys for being so calm and patient with me" Mr. Harris said walking away with a few other teachers.
Everyone started making lots of noise talking to each other. I looked up at the clock. It was already almost four. School ended about an hour ago. Everyone started to muck around joking about the virus. Jokes like telling people that they have the virus and things like that. I stood up and walked away. That's one of the many things I hate about high school. The noise.
I walked upstairs and I stood against the window looking out at the schools oval. I saw Kiara and Alleigh walking up to me.
"You ok?" Alleigh asked.
"I'm fine. I just couldn't stand the noise" I said.
I turned around and faced them.
"Are you guys ok?" I asked.
"I'm getting better. It's definitely gonna be hard to get used to living here for a month" Kiara said.
"I'm gonna miss my parents but I'll be fine" Alleigh said.
"It's going to be hard to get used to it" I said.
"We are just gonna go get something from our lockers, want to come?" Alleigh asked.
"I'll catch up with you" I said.
Alleigh and Kiara walked back downstairs to get to their lockers. I turned around and walked down the hallway. I needed to get everything out of my head.
I could hear talking down the hallway. It must of been the teachers talking about something. As I walked past I noticed it was Mr. Harris talking with Ms. Haywood. I quickly hid to the side of the door so they couldn't see me.
"This is going to be hard. I want to get back to my wife and my kids but I can't. We are all gonna be in here for longer then a month. I just don't want to tell the students. They will all go crazy. We need them to be calm right now" Mr. Harris said.
"I'm sure they will be fine" Ms. Haywood said.
"Have you heard what the virus does? It's not going to be fine. Once the students find out the truth they are gonna get scared and they will make stupid decisions. We can't tell them what's actually happening. We can't tell them the truth" Mr. Harris said.
"Ok John, ok" Ms. Haywood said.
I quickly turned around and walked back the other way. My heart was beating loudly. I caught my breath as I looked outside.
"What is happening?" I said to myself.
