Chapter IV - The Train Ride
Ace and I stepped out of the car. The train hasn't arrived yet- Maybe it's late? Me and Ace said nothing to each other. There was really nothing to talk about. I would glance at him occasionally but he never looked at me. His eyes were always to fixed onto the ground.
"The train will be here any minute-- And speaking of any minute where is Slade? Surely he couldn't have walked here." Amelie asked and looked around.
"Over Here." We heard a man said.
I looked over my shoulder, so did Ace to see a fairly musicaler man. That's Slade for sure.
"Slade? Don't tell me you walked here!" Amelie said.
"No, I didn't walk, I ran. You guys left me." Slade huffed.
It was silent again until Amelie broke it. "Well you should've tried to catch up in the first place."
Everyone and every life stopped in District 6 when we heard the train coming. The sound was quiet humming but strangely enough we hated the sound in District 6. I watched the train in the distance pulled up. The humming stopped when the train stopped.
"Come come," Amelie said and walked into the train and disappeared.
I took in a big breath and walked halfway to the train then I stopped, remembering Ace.
"Are you coming?" I said turning around to Ace.
Ace just looked up at me. Again, we connected eyes. But this time it was different, he had glossy eyes. Was he crying? I gave him a small smile trying to warm him up, but then again, It wasn't a true smile.
I turned around and walked into the train. Before I went fully in, I turned around and looked back and my home, my prison.
I will miss everything about this place, the gross air to the tight streets. I'll miss it all and I doubt I'll ever ever see it again, but smelling this air again gives me ease. This is my home, I was raised here and was taught how to act and respond to everyone, against my will.
But most of all, Louis, Liza, mom and dad. I'll never see them again. Never, get my mom's hugs or my dad messages. Never get to hear Liza's laughter nor ever get to see Louis's face again. I'm leaving them behind, why does this thought occur to me now.
I snapback into reality. Something warm and soothing ran down my cheeks. Tears? Was I crying? I quickly wiped my tears away and stepped onto the train. I looked around in shock, this place was the most wonderful looking place I ever saw. My father worked by the trains but he never told about it.
The room was elegantly decorated in a royal blue. The chairs and rugs were all so fluffy looking, I wanted to roll on the carpet so bad. There was a table, with a red cloth going over the table. On the table where bunch of sweets. My mouth watered looking at the food displayed on the table.
Soon Ace and Slade stepped onto the train.
"Magnificent." Ace finally said.
That's the correct word to describe this place. Magnificent. No other words can describe it.
My eyes followed Ace as he went to the liquor. Liquor? Isn't he to young? He's about 16 I think, not the legal drinking age.
"Liquor? Aren't ya to young?" I asked.
"This is the Hunger Games right? This is the best chance to do and eat whatever we want. We don't have long to live." He answered. He's right... "Want one?" He asked referring to the bottle of Liquor.
"What is it?" I asked.
"Looks like Blonde Ale." He said looking at the bottle. He looked back at me and noticed I didn't understand a word he said. "It's beer, very expensive in fact, must've been aged well then." He shrugged and uncapped the bottle and poured the beer in the shot glass.
I watched the white foam form at the top. The foam went down to reveal the golden colour of the beer.
"Knock it back, tell me if you like it." He said and handed shot glass to me.
I wrapped my fingers around the glass. I took a few minutes, hesitating to have my first taste of beer. I knocked back the beer in my mouth. A bitter taste filled my taste buds, I really don't know how to feel about this. I can't say I like the beer, the taste is just too odd.
"It's odd." I answered.
He poured himself a glass and sat down on one of the blue chairs and so did I. "So.." I said with a pause. "I'm Bailey, I'm sure you already know that...." I said trying to make small talk.
"Ace." He answered.
Slade came back and poured himself a glass a beer. "You didn't like it?" He asked.
I shook my head, knowing he was talking to me. This is a good time to see how tall slade was, I'm sure he's over 6 feet.
"I'm pretty sure you know your mentor, Slade Dym. Slade these are your tributes, Bailey Weiss, she is 15 years old and over here is Ace Francis, 16." Amelie said introducing us to each other.
Where the hell did she came from? I noticed a small piece of paper resting in her hands, that must be all of the information about us.
"We will be arriving at the capitol in about 3 hours." Amelie said and left the room.
"So what can you guys do?" Slade asked. That's kind of forward.
"I can play darts." I spat out.
"That's hopeless, you'll never win if you only know how to throw darts. Try throwing knives." He said and slumped in his chair.
He picked up a knife on the table, It wasn't a throwing knife but it was about the same size and shape as a throwing knife.
"You play darts, so when you throw it's more likely you'll hit the bullseye." Slade said and stood up and handed me the knife.
I grabbed the knife and just looked at it. I stood up.
"Grip the knife with your dominant hand" He said. I followed the directions. "Angle the knife now." He said. I really did not know how to do it but then I got the hang of it. He started to move my body in a weird angle. "Now throw it." He demanded and pointed to a rag hanging above one of the blue chairs.
Then I threw it, head on. The knife pierced through the air and sliced through the rag. Like a dart, but sharper and deadlier.
"Good good.." He whispered. "You'll use throwing knives," he said. Choosing my own weapon? That's bold, but I guess he knows how to survive more than I do. " Now Ace," Slade looked at his arms. "How do you feel about a sword, it's easy to use."
Ace nodded. "Now, how do you want to go about it. Individual or together?"
I looked at Ace. How this works is that Slade will be the one helping us through surviving the Hunger Games and Amelie will be the one who teaches us what to say and act.
"I'll give you time to think. Just think about it before we make it to the capitol. It's better to get training done as soon as possible. Anyways survival questions?" Slade said, he've done done this for years, at some point you gotta ask, does he even care about us.
"What do we eat?" Ace asked with big eyes. That is a good question. It makes me wonder if we will eat at all.
"My best say is eat everything natural, berries, leaves and dry fruits can be good. Anything that breathes I say that's food." Slade respond. "If you ever hunt, you gotta go quiet, can't even let a single breath out."
"Shelter?" I asked.
"Screw shelter unless you want to die in the first fifty seconds. If you ever seek a shelter then you can only stay in in for 12 hours. No more, if anymore the other tributes will find you." Slade explained.
Ace nodded. I turned to my window and watched District 6 fading in the distance. It isn't that small either like I thought. It was actually large. But watching it fade with the sky in the distance made my stomach turn. Tears built up in my eyes as I watch home disappearing forever. Was this homesickness? Whatever this feeling was made me feel miserable. Just thinking of home, my family, friends just made me want to burst out into tears. I probably should leave the room before I lose it.
I stood up and without looking back I exited the room. Down a hall there is the trebuits rooms. I opened the door to mine and fell down onto my bed. I stuffed my face into my pillow and let the wet tears run down my face.
45 minutes later...
I was sitting at the dinner table. There was a white cloth covering the table. On top of the white cloth was food and sweets placed out perfectly. I stuffed my face with some rolls and dipped a few in my hot chocolate. It was delicious.
"Now now, Bailey use some manners!" Amelie hissed at me.
I rolled my eyes in response. We never got to eat like this in district 6. Sure we had more food than others but we never had hot chocolate, or even rolls in face. Ace was nowhere to be seen. I think he is asleep. I won't blame him for resting, it has been a long day.
I grabbed the napkin next to me and wiped the crums and hot chocolate off my face.
"Excuse me." I said and got up.
When I was done I went to see if Ace was in his room. I crept down into another part of the train to see if Ace was in the .' I opened up a door to see a empty bed that looked so soft that I wanted to sleep in it. I forced myself not to doze off into the fluffy-looking bed and continued my search for Ace.
I started to walk to the end of the train were there was a round room. I saw Ace sitting on a long round couch staring out a window. I stayed silent staring at him trying to find words to say. Ace turned around and noticed me. It was quiet, no words were dared came out. I of course broke the silence.
"I am, uh.. Just about to g-" I spat out random words.
"It's ok, why not you sit down?" Ace said. I slowly sat down next to Ace.
We made small talk, nothing too deep. Of course we don't want to become friends because we need to kill each other. It's best not to get attached. Soon enough I felt my eyes slowly shut into blackness. I was asleep.
"Children! We are here! Welcome to the Capitol!" Amelie shouted. My eyes shot open to the loud noise.
I found myself sleeping fairly close to Ace, anyways I turned around and I looked out the big window to see that we are crossing on a bridge over glittery water. The water looks way more fresher than the water from the wells back home. In other words, It was beautiful! As we arrived in the capitol I saw crowds of people coming up to the train and cheering. I don't know why but I waved a little.
