Chapter 95

Claire came back out and sat down with a sigh. "That suppression thing seems to be working well." She noted.

"I'm glad for it. The last thing we need right now is for the distortions and destabilization to pick up again." Matt responded, leaning back in the chair. "It feels like we're almost at the end. You know?"

Claire nodded. "It does. You have so much information to use against this company and the people that work there to take them down with, Tony is working on a way to stabilize Kasey so she can stay here..." She smiled. "It... It feels so close. But, you and I both know they're gonna put up a hell of a fight."

Matt let out a hefty sigh, turning his head upwards towards the ceiling. "They will. Both legally and physically. But we've got heaps of evidence against them, and Tony is a pretty trusting eyewitness. I think this might all work out."

"I certainly hope so... None of them deserve this..." She sighed softly. "And it sounds and looks like they either are the same people or work with the people who were able to pierce your armor..." She frowned. "We're lucky they don't know who you are, Matt..."

Matt frowned, the consequences of such an action playing over in his mind. "Yeah, very lucky. If they figured that out, there'd be a lot more people than just me in trouble. You, Foggy, Karen... Even Kasey, since she's staying with me."

She nodded at that. "And now Interweb's been unmasked and they could try to find her... It just makes me worried how far they're willing to take this..."

"They've already gone so far as to trap Tony and attack the kids in broad daylight. I wouldn't doubt them if they straight up tried to infiltrate the tower to get to them. They're that brazen." Matt pointed out, though he hoped that wouldn't be the case.

"I really hope not but I wouldn't put it past them..." She ran a hand over her face. "I'm just worried how deep that rabbit hole goes... Tony said there were 25 spider attempts but that wasn't even talking about any other projects... And the fact no one has ever noticed anyone going missing..." She shook her head again. "It's terrifying."

"With the whole multiverse thing, I wouldn't be surprised if all their subjects weren't from this universe. That's probably why they've gotten away with it for so long." Matt explained, crossing his arms.

"It's entirely possible." She agreed. "Which I feel makes it worse... If they had anyone from their universes... They'll never know what happened to them..."

It was heartbreaking to think of all of those 'subjects'. They were real people, probably kids, who were ripped away from their families. "All those missing people. And they couldn't even get the decency of their names."

"It's horrible... The fact they ever thought of doing anything like this..." She scoffed. "It's disgusting..."

"People see a glimpse of power, and they strive to make it their own. Even if it drives them crazy." He shook his head. It was hard to even grasp the reasoning for what those people did.

She sighed and nodded. "And the fact that they've come so close with Kasey..." She shook her head. "I almost wish there was a way to reverse it for her... She's been happier in the past few hours with that suppressor than I've seen her almost at all..."

"Well if we truly are close to the end, then I can assume we can make a happy life for her here." He wanted to make that his goal. To hear her laugh once this all was done with.

Claire nodded a bit more firmly at that. "I'm sure of it. She deserves it."

"She deserves more than that." Matt spoke, listening for Kasey's breathing and heartbeat. They still sounded normal, which he took as a good sign.

Claire started to agree when they suddenly heard Kasey jerk awake with a sharp, fearful gasp. Her heart was racing fast despite the cuff as she panted for breath. Matt could smell the salt from her tears as they started to flow as she let out a choked sob.

Claire was quickly on her feet and started to move towards her when she glanced back at Matt, unsure if he needed help getting up but heard a distorted cry from Kasey, making her look at the bedroom then back at Matt, stepping back in surprise when she saw Kasey suddenly in his lap. "Holy sh- Kasey?" Claire stepped towards them.

Kasey was shaking like a leaf and still crying, still sounding distorted as she breathed and cried but she was desperately trying to calm herself down. She was tense as if unsure of where she was.

Matt had placed his hands on the sides of the chair, readying himself to push himself up. He didn't get far, however, feeling Kasey's weight suddenly on top of him. He was pressed back into the chair, and sort of... froze. "Kasey?"

He quickly snapped out of his confused stupors and wrapped his arms around her in an attempt to comfort her. "Hey, hey, you're okay. It was just a destabilization bump. At least you came over here."

She tensed a bit when he wrapped his arms around her but seemed to realize it was him and sunk into his brace, still crying as she shook in his arms.

Claire came over and gently sat down and rubbed at her back. "Hey, it's okay... You're alright." She reassured her but Kasey made no sign of acknowledging she heard either of them.

"Hey, was that just random? Did you start having a bad dream or something?" Matt asked her, unsure of what had caused this. After all, the suppressor had been working before.

She didn't answer him but could feel the vibrations of him speaking as she stayed buried against him, still sounding slightly distorted but it wasn't as bad as she fought to calm down.

Claire frowned. "Kasey? Can you hear us?"

Again no answer.

"Jeez. Whatever it was, it seems like it was bad." Matt spoke quietly, keeping his arms around her. "You're still here, in the apartment. Claire and I are still here with you."

She still made no motion to respond to them at all but cried in pain as she glitched in his arms.

The feeling was strange. Like she was shaking rapidly and moving slightly every different way yet not at all.

Claire watched with wide eyes. "Kasey, please. You need to take a deep breath-"

Another cry but this time- This time she disappeared out of his arms.

"Kasey you have to calm down-" Matt tried to reason with her, only for her to once again disappear. He moved his arms, finding the space between them painfully empty. "Where'd she go?!"

Claire looked around, trying to spot her and ran over to the bedroom but she wasn't there or the bathroom either. "I-I don't know!" She replied, her heart racing.

"Shit." It was then that he began to panic. They needed to find her, and fast. "What about the roof?"

"I'll go check!" She quickly hurried up the stairs and as she was about to reach the door, Matt heard Kasey struggling to catch her breath on the roof and Claire saw her as she opened the door and ran over. "Kasey-" She reached out and held her close as Kasey trembled in her arms.

"C-Cla-aire?" Her speech was distorted but she finally acknowledged her.

"I'm here! It's okay- I'm-"

Kasey cried out as she glitched again and Claire felt her vanish from her arms again. She quickly looked around trying to spot her but she wasn't on the roof so she ran back inside. "Kasey?!" She called but couldn't find her anywhere in the apartment and stopped in the living room, turning to Matt. "S-She's not here- M-Maybe the hall??" She sounded stressed out and worried for her.

Matt was relieved when he heard Claire find her on the roof, and pushed himself up to stand. He went over to the roof access, only to hear Kasey glitch out again. He cursed loudly. "Let's check the hall!"

Claire nodded, heading towards the door and unlocking it but didn't see her at all. "I'm going to check the other floors, okay? Stay here in case she shows up again." Claire told him before heading down the hall quickly to look.

"Yeah, I'll wait here." He hated even saying that, but he was in no condition to go running about. He moved onto the stairs, sitting down on them.

As Claire searched the building, Matt suddenly heard the sound of Kasey being sick again what sounded like a rooftop over to the west and not very long afterwards, he heard the sound of her body collapsing onto the roof, unmoving aside from distorted sounding breathing.

Matt cursed again, and stood to call out for Claire. As he stepped closer to the door, he called out for her. "Claire! She's not in the building! She's out on one of the roofs to the west! I can hear her!"

Claire heard him call out to her and swore under her breath, not bothering to raise her voice as she replied. "I'll go see if I can get to her!" She was soon leaving the building, hurrying to the next one to the west.

But it was in vain as Matt heard a soft thud from the bedroom and Kasey's racing heart and irregular breathing.

What happened next? Yup. Another slew of curses as Matt hobbled his way to the bedroom. "Kasey-?" He called out, pausing to pinpoint the location of her breathing before heading towards her.

She didn't respond but the distortion started to fade as she laid on his bed, completely unconscious.

"Crap." He came over to the bed, sitting on the side to check her over. She had been pretty beaten up after glitching the first time, but this time... she had glitched multiple times in the past five minutes alone. He grabbed his phone, calling up Claire.

Claire was quick to answer. "Is she back?!" She asked as she paused, heading to the next building.

Kasey made no acknowledgement of him even sitting beside her or any of the noise.

"Yeah. She's completely out of it though. On a good note, she glitched onto my bed. On a bad note, she's unresponsive." Matt informed her, listening to Kasey's breathing and heart as well.

"Shit. I'll be back up as soon as I can. Just try to stay with her, okay?" Claire told him.

Kasey seemed to become completely stable. Her breathing was fine, her heartbeat was a little fast but that was- Oh- Make that a lot faster.

Her heartbeat had picked up speed, almost beating out of chest and her breathing became irregular, almost seeming to gasp for breath.

"Yeah I'll be with her until you're back." Matt kept her on the other end, hitting the speaker option and setting the phone aside. Worry crossed his face as her heart immensely picked up speed. "Her heart- It's too fast-"

"What? Shit! Try to wake her up or calm her down if you can! I'm coming as fast as I can-" Claire told him as she sprinted up the stairs.

Kasey was shaking as she continued to gasp for breath as her heart raced faster and faster. It wasn't supposed to be this fast with the suppression cuff on-

And almost just as fast, it stopped.

As in; Completely. Stopped.

Matt's own heart dropped and he reached out, pressing his fingers to her neck for any sign of a pulse. Even though he knew it was hopeless after her heart had gone silent. "It stopped!!" He cried out, and immediately went into doing CPR.

"Shit!" Claire swore again as she pushed faster up the stairs. "I'm almost there!" She told him, trying not to trip on the stairs on her way up.

Kasey still made no response. No breath, no pulse, nothing.

"CPR isn't helping-!" Matt didn't give up on her. He wouldn't give up on her. She was not going to go through hell only to go out like this. He was not going to let her die.

Claire shoved the door open, not bothering to close it as she ran into the bedroom, eyes wide when she saw Kasey still not responding and hung up her phone as she joined Matt's side. "I'm going to check my bag if there's anything that can help-" she told him, dipping back into the living room and prayed for a miracle.

"Please hurry-" He begged. He knew in situations like these, time was a very precious thing. He prayed that something miraculous would happen. That her heart would start back up, that she'd start to breathe. Hell, he'd take her crying over this!

Kasey still wouldn't respond as he worked to bring her back to them.

Claire was digging through her bag but found nothing that would help. "I don't have anything and it'll take too long to go get something that will!" She called back, trying to recall if she saw an emergency medkit anywhere in the building.

"Check the chest!" Matt didn't give up, continuing to try the CPR method. He didn't know what he'd do if she didn't make it. Well, for starters, that corporation would burn.

Claire moved to dig through it, being careful but fast, hoping for something, anything that would help.

But it was Matt's persistence that started to pay off by a small gasp for breath coming from her and he felt her heart start to try to beat on its own only to filter back out.

"It came back, but only for a moment. It just faded back out." Matt spoke quickly, and was slowly running out of breath.

Claire couldn't find anything and rushed back to him. "I'm going to switch places with you, okay?" She told him before they very quickly made the swap and Claire took over the CPR.

"I couldn't find anything that might be able to Jumpstart her-" She explained as she kept trying but Kasey was still not responding.

Matt moved to the side, waiting and listening for any new change. He kept praying that she'd come back, that her heart would start beating again. "I don't have any sort of jumpstart aid around here-"

"I'd call Foggy but it'd take too long for him to get one and get here-" She replied as she kept working, trying to get a response but still nothing.

"Come on, Kasey..." she kept trying, knowing if they stopped for even a second, it could be a second too long.

Matt groaned. He knew they didn't have anything that would help here, other than whatever he kept in his first aid kits. He didn't have anything to start up a stopped heart. "Anything?"

Claire started to shake her head as she kept going, pressing a bit harder when Kasey suddenly gasped for breath and Claire felt her heart start to beat, slowly at first but became fast within seconds. A bit faster than normal but not as bad as the earlier one.

She very hesitantly leaned back, panting heavily as she watched Kasey lay on the bed, breathing heavily.

Matt sucked in a breath and held it, listening to Kasey's heart. It beat swiftly, and it was a beautiful thing to hear. When it didn't drop, he let out his own breath. "Kasey-?"

Kasey let out a small groan of pain but stirred a bit. "M-matt-?" Her voice was weak and exhausted sounding.

Claire let out a breath as well, taking a shaky one as her body sagged with relief.

"Kasey, just take a deep breath and relax. You had another glitching episode, but it's alright now." He wouldn't be surprised if he had a cracked rib from the compressions.

She tried to do as he said but hissed in pain. "It hurts..." she replied.

"I know, I know..." Claire replied. "But you need to keep breathing. Okay?"

"Let's also work on getting your heart back to a steady rate." Matt told her. He spoke softly, in a way that he thought would be soothing.

Kasey gave a slight nod as she kept breathing despite the sharp pain in her chest every time.

Matt could hear her ribs creak a little with every breath.

Claire brushed her hair from her face and sat close to her to reassure her.

Matt winced lightly, knowing that couldn't have felt good. He reached out and picked up one of her hands to hold. "Sounds like a couple cracked ribs."

She weakly grasped his hand as she tried to focus on breathing, dipping between consciousness and unconsciousness.

Claire sighed. "That happens with CPR unfortunately..." she noted but Kasey didn't seem to react to it, too tired to process.

Matt just held onto her, as if he'd lose her again. It was frightening to even think about. He listened to her breathing, and noticed as well that she didn't react to the cpr comment. "Go ahead and rest Kasey."

She just gave a small nod as she drifted back off, her grasp loosening in his hand.

Her heart beat evened out and stayed steady as she took deep, slightly painful breaths.

Claire rubbed at her face a bit with a sigh. "Thank God..." She muttered. "That was so close... and we don't even know how it triggered..."

Matt sat back, just grateful to hear her steady out again. "That was too close. I really hope Tony hurries it up over there..."

"So do I..." Claire agreed with a soft sigh.

Matt wrapped the covers over Kasey, tucking her in once more. It really broke his heart that she had to go through all of this. But he had hope that it would get better.

Speaking of hurrying it up, Tony was working on the finishing touches of the room and stood back. He brought an apple inside and sealed the room and turned it on and started changing the frequency, watching the apple glitch out.

He grinned as he restabilized it. Let's just hope this works.
