Chapter 85
Matt heard them go and let out a sigh. He accepted Claire's help and got Kasey to his bed. "We should get her something to rinse her mouth with."
Claire nodded as she helped Kasey in the bed. "I'll get something, just sit with her for now." She told him and left the room again.
Once Matt was sure that Kasey was situated, he took a seat on the side of the bed. He wanted to sink into it, to be able to sit down without jumping up at a moment's notice, even if he was ready to.
Kasey was still crying a little bit and sobbed when another glitch happened again, curling up into a ball as she cried. "W-What if they d-don't find anything-?" She asked after a moment but her voice was quiet.
"They will. Just like how you guys have found something every time you went back. The files, the antidote, and now something that will truly help you." Matt assured her. He was tired, but he'd be damned if he let her feel like crap. "I will be right here while they're gone, and if anything happens, they'll let me know. Then I'll let you know."
Kasey listened to him before taking a deep breath and nodding a bit, the tension leaving her shoulders for now. "O...Okay..." She sounded worn out and he couldn't blame her.
Claire came back over and helped her clean up before she curled back up on the bed, fighting to stay awake but the distortions slowed to a stop.
Matt smiled and reached up, rubbing her shoulder lightly. When Claire came in, Matt helped her to sit up. Afterwards he allowed her to lay back down, and tucked the covers around her. He was glad she wasn't distorting as much, but felt bad that she had been sleeping so much.
She cuddled into the covers and sleepily tilted her head towards him. "Y....You really think they'll find something?" She asked him, tiredly.
"I do. We're finally working on the same page as Tony, and knowing him... he'll come back with something." Matt answered, continuing to rub her shoulder gently.
"Mmm... I hope so..." She mumbled sleepily before shifting to lay a bit closer to him, her head now next to him and she dragged the pillow with her. "I-I'm... I'm tired..." She slurred her words a bit as she fought back the sleep.
Matt turned his head to 'look' at her, resting his hand on the back of her head. "If you want to sleep, you can. I'll be here the whole time."
She leaned against his hand with a soft hum. "...I'm scared too..." She admitted quietly.
Matt let out a quiet sigh. No one should be afraid to fall asleep. "I'm sorry you have to deal with this.."
She shook her head slightly. "Not... Not your fault..." She mumbled, curling a little closer to him, happy to just be near him. "...Cuddle with me? I can tell you're tired too..." She pointed out quietly.
Matt chuckled lightly, finding it amusing that even though she was so tired, she still wanted him to cuddle her. It was endearing. "Alright, give me a second." He got up and laid on the other side of the bed, pulling her gently into a position where he could wrap his arm around her.
She made a happy little hum in the back of her throat as she nuzzled against him with a yawn. "You're... you're warm..." Her voice slurred a bit. "Warm 'n comfy..."
Matt smirked, fighting the urge to chuckle again. He was afraid he'd jostle her awake if he did. That, and he was pretty close to falling asleep himself.
She was drifting in and out, still fighting it a bit. She had been quiet for a few minutes while she fought back and forth and Matt had thought she had fallen mostly asleep when she spoke again. "...Will you sing again?" She mumbled, just loud enough for him to hear her and honestly he couldn't tell if she was talking in her sleep or not.
She didn't move from her place curled up against him when she spoke. It had sounded like she said something just before but it was too mumbled to understand but before he could answer her she mumbled again.
"...Please, dad...?"
Matt leaned into his pillow, having thought that Kasey had finally managed to fall asleep. Only, she hadn't, as she spoke up again. He heard what she said, and doubted himself on whether or not she was asleep. Hearing her request, he hesitated knowing Claire was still around, yet his heart ached. So putting that Catholic choir boy background to some use, a low hum started in the back of his throat.
Claire looked up from where she was leaning against the door frame when she heard him start humming and watched quietly, smiling upon seeing how relaxed and comfortable Kasey looked in his arms.
Kasey hummed faintly when he started to hum and quietly listened, continuing to linger just on the edge of sleep.
Matt was too tired to fully sing anything. Another time. He silently promised. He tried to make his humming as calming as possible, continuing to hold her close, trying to lull her into sleep.
Kasey's breathing was slowing but she still wasn't quite asleep but was quiet as she listened to his soft humming as she stayed in his embrace, warm and secure.
Matt continued to hum and listen, forcing himself not to fall asleep until he was certain she was. He pulled the covers over them, effectively tucking her in.
Kasey let out a low hum as he covered them up, her body fully relaxing as she took a deep breath. She curled against him, her head tucked against his chest as she finally fell asleep, mumbling under her breath just before she did, barely cohesive or loud enough for him to hear had he not been paying attention.
"G'night dad... Love you..."
Matt's humming trailed off and faded away, as he laid there trying to think clearly. His tired brain was too overwhelming, even for him, and he felt himself slipping into sleep. Before he completely passed out, he responded in the only way his tired brain saw fit.
"Love you too... Goodnight Kase."
Claire had watched the two of them and smiled warmly at the sight of them both falling fast asleep and silently took a picture with her phone before turning the lights off, making sure they were both situated and silently closed the door behind her as she went to the living room to wait for any calls.
