Chapter 26

(Hey! Quick heads up that there's a part in this chapter that might make people a little squeamish. Matt's injuries are tended to in this chapter. So if you want to skip, skip at the warning till you see the Warning End. Enjoy!)

Kasey joined Matt on the roof and let him lean on her. "I'll be honest, I'm a bit surprised you're still conscious." She admitted.

"So am I. But I've been through similar situations before." Matt explained, heading for the roof access of the building. Although, he didn't believe he'd be conscious for long, once he knew he was safe and his fight or flight response had diminished away.

Kasey led him to the door with a weak chuckle. "Well that definitely makes me feel better." She said a bit sarcastically as she looked at the door. "I assume it's locked..."

Matt stepped away for a moment, doing something normal for once. He went to the wall, pulling out a loose brick and retrieving a key. "It would be expensive for me to keep busting in m- Matthew's door." Be caught himself. His own full name felt strange on his tongue.

She didn't comment on it but did laugh a bit. "And I'm not sure he'd appreciate that." She smiled as she "watched" him unlock and open the door and put the key back. She moved back to his side. "Do you want to try the stairs or would you prefer it if I carried you down them?"

"Maybe just give me a shoulder to lean on." He chuckled lightly, unable to imagine her carrying him down the stairs in the apartment. He closed the door behind them, glad to be safe once more.

Kasey nodded at that. "Okay but I'm telling you now that if your leg buckles, I'm carrying you." She smirked a bit as she started to help him down the stairs.

"Fine by me." Matt replied, leaning heavily on her for support on the way down. By now, he had full trust in her strength, even though he hadn't even known the extent of it a few short hours before.

She moved slowly and steadily for him to keep up with her. She felt her senses suddenly alert her and she swiftly moved in front of him and kept him from falling as his leg finally gave out on him, refusing to move anymore than he had forced it too.

"Woah, you alright?" She asked with concern in her voice.

"I think all the energy I was working on is gone." Matt's words were beginning to slur and slow, as he held onto her. Dammit, he was so close! Of course he'd collapse now...

He could hear her heartbeat speed up and felt her very carefully shift around him. "I'm gonna pick you up, okay?" She warned him before gingerly scooping him off his feet and into her arms. She did her best to carry him in a way that wouldn't hurt his injuries. She ended up with him in something akin to a bridal carry or rather one-person carry. She also seemed to do it with practiced ease as if he weighed nothing to her.

Matt winced lightly at the movement, but appreciated that she moved just so that it wouldn't hurt him any worse than he already was. His senses were all awry, as his body was trying to focus on healing, which wasn't exactly possible with the bullets still in their place.

Kasey reached the bottom of the stairs as she heard Foggy opening the door. She didn't turn to him as she was focused on getting Matt to the couch and had to focus to see around her. She made it over as Foggy came into the room after shutting and locking the door and watched her put him on the couch gently.

He blinked in surprise. Did she just- You know what? Ask later. Matt came first. He came over to the couch. "Hey, I already gave our nurse friend a call but she said to call her back and tell her more details so she knows what to bring." He told him gently.

Seeing Matt like this was a very rare occurrence. He hated how pale he looked even with his helmet still on.

"Thank you.." Matt shifted himself on the couch, and tried not to think of the bullets currently stuck in his skin. "Bullet wounds. That should be good enough details." Matt uttered, before continuing. "Good amount of blood loss, but the wounds have temporary bandaging."

Kasey was hovering nearby anxiously, her focus entirely on Matt. She felt horrible for getting him involved in her own mess... It nearly got him killed too...

Foggy winced but nodded as he texted Claire back with what Matt told him. "She's not gonna be happy, you know that right?"

Matt couldn't help but smirk. "Yeah, this is the third time in just a couple days that she's had to come over. She is going to be very unhappy."

Foggy looked down at his phone when it vibrated. "She says she's on the way. She also says if you don't stay put until she gets here, she'll kill you herself." He then looked at Matt, curiously. "What were the other two times?"

Kasey shifted a bit awkwardly. "...Me." She replied, making Foggy turn to her a bit surprised.

"Oh... Who are you anyway?" He asked her. "Just... whatever name you wanna give me is fine-"

Kasey hesitated. On one hand Daredevil knew her as Kasey now and not as her alter ego but Foggy on the other hand... She shifted a bit nervously.

Matt listened to the two, and picked up on Kasey's hesitation. He spoke quietly. "You can trust him. He knows who I am and hasn't told a soul." He assured her.

Kasey "looked" at Matt before nodding slightly. "...Kasey."

Foggy tilted his head a little bit but nodded. "Foggy." He replied, offering his hand.

Kasey sensed the movement and took his hand, shaking it. "Nice to meet you."

"You too." He agreed.

She looked back at Matt for a moment and hesitated. "I'm gonna wait up on the roof for her, if that's okay-" She really just wanted to let them be able to talk without worrying about her since she could tell they were both tiptoeing around her.

"You might want to clean up a bit first. I can smell the blood on you." Matt told her, motioning towards his sink. "There should be rags over there as well."

Kasey stopped, confused before becoming aware of the taste of blood in her mouth again.

Oh.

She... didn't remember doing that... that's not at all concerning.

She gave a stiff nod and hesitated before pulling her hood back, her goggles set on the counter, and pulled the mask off. She pulled her gloves off and set them aside as well.

Foggy's eyes widened when he saw how young she appeared to be. Why did this child have blood around her mouth, fangs, and apparently spider-like powers??

She washed off quickly in the sink, hating the taste lingering in her mouth and was half tempted to use soap to make it stop.

She finished getting it off from the outside and as much as she could from inside before drying off a bit. "I'll be outside..." she grabbed her goggles, mask, and gloves and disappeared up the stairs.

Foggy waited till he heard the door shut to look at Matt. "So... who is she??"

"I found her half dead in an alleyway a day or so ago. Fought off three muggers by the time I got there. I was keeping her here until she was healed enough to go back to her friends." Matt explained, trying not to move around as he talked.

Foggy sat down across from him. "Half dead?" He chuckled weakly. "She doesn't act like it." He pointed out. He hesitated before leaning forward. "Listen man, this kid just carried you down the stairs as if you weighed nothing, has webs or something???" He sounded confused before shaking his head.

"I swear she had fangs or something when she grinned earlier!" He ran a hand through his hair, as he let out another nervous chuckle. "And oh yeah, that blood you could smell?? That was around and in her mouth and I'm pretty sure it wasn't hers." He hissed, his voice low and stressed.

"I don't know what you've gotten involved in but are you sure she's safe?"

"I'm pretty sure she bit one of the men. I could hear the crunch." Matt grimaced, 'looking' up at the ceiling. "It wasn't a very pleasant sound."

For now, since Kasey was out of the room, he reached up and lifted his mask off of his head, relieved to get it off.

Foggy just stared at him. "She did what-" He ran his hand over his face. "Dude, if she bit a man hard enough to make a crunch and draw that much blood? That guy is dead." He stressed.

Matt could hear his heartbeat start to race faster. "Matt," He breathed out, barely loud enough for him to hear if he wasn't focused on his voice already.

"Think about this for a minute. You just found a child that was on death's doorstep a day ago, who is now seemingly perfectly fine. She seems to have a spider theme about her which, if you think about it, is kinda terrifying," He pointed out.

"Spiders catch their prey in webbing and then bite and break down their body from the inside out-" He hissed.

"If she really did bite a man hard enough to draw that much blood-" He shifted a bit. "If she really wanted to, especially with how you are right now, she could probably kill both of us. Easily."

Matt heard how frightened Foggy sounded, and although he wouldn't admit it, a lot of what Foggy was saying was right. She was powerful and scary, but he also believed she was good.

"I don't believe she would. Against them, she had a reason to be viscous. They were the ones responsible for her abilities, and the path they took to get her there was nothing short of horrifying." The talking was further draining his energy, but he continued. "I believe she is good."

Foggy stared at him for a long moment before sighing. "You really better hope you're right." He replied before there was a knock on the door.

"It's me." Claire's voice called and Foggy went and let her in.

She came over and stared at Matt for a moment. "Okay, yes, you said bullet wounds but what the hell is that stuff-" She asked, looking at the webbing.

He lifted his head when he heard her voice. "Temporary bandaging. The bleeding was getting worse." Matt answered, laying his head back down on the arm of the couch.

"Sorry for bringing you back out here." Matt apologized. "I would've dealt with it myself, if there weren't bullets in me."

Claire sighed. "Well, it's either come out when you call or let you bleed out." She replied, sarcastically.

She knelt next to him, looking at the bandaging. "I've never seen fabric like this before." She noted as she reached out to lightly run her fingers against the surface of it. It felt almost silky?

She sighed and shook her head. "I already know you're gonna say no, but if you have bullets in you, it really would be better to deal with it at the hospital cause otherwise it's just risking making it worse." She explained.

She stopped and looked around confused. "Where's Kasey?"

"She went up to the roof." Foggy replied. "I-" He hesitated. "Do you need her?"

Claire hesitated, looking at Matt. "Another pair of hands would be helpful but it's up to him if she can come back in right now."

After cooling off for a moment, he reached up and secured his mask back onto his head. He let out a deep breath, figuring it was safer if he kept that secret for a later date. "Foggy, could you call her back in?" He couldn't shout, at risk of hurting himself or making him dizzier than he was now.

Foggy nodded. "Yeah." He moved up the stairs and poked his head outside.

He saw her sitting on the ledge of the building and heard her mumbling to herself when she stiffened a bit, realizing he was there. "F-Foggy?"

"Uh, yeah. Claire is asking for you downstairs. Needs some extra hands or something?"

Kasey hesitated. "I'll uh... be down in a moment." She replied which Foggy nodded at and went back in.

She waited till the door shut and used her invisibility to change back into her normal clothes.

She came down the stairs, her backpack on her shoulders.

"Hey... You needed me?"

Claire turned to her and nodded. "He has some bullets still stuck in him and I may need some help dealing with them." She explained.

Kasey winced. She was familiar. "How are you planning on doing it?"

"I may have to do some lacerations to get to them at all," Claire looked hesitant.

"I can get them." Kasey spoke without thinking.

Claire stared at her. "What?"

Kasey shifted. Oops. "I... I can get them without you needing to do that... As long as I can reach them."

Matt grimaced at both the thoughts of lacerations, and digging around for bullets. He wasn't sure whether it was the thoughts or blood loss that made him nauseous. "As long as one of you gets them out so they can be sewn up, I'll be grateful for it."

Kasey took a deep breath as she "looked" around the room before spotting a coaster on the coffee table. "I, uh, can use this," She touched it with the tips of her fingers then lifted her hand and the coaster into the air.

Claire and Foggy both jerked back, eyes wide.

Kasey just awkwardly stood there as Claire slowly came over, looking at it in confused awe.

"H-How are you-?"

"I-" She hesitated. "I just... can." She lamely answered, not wanting to go into it.

Claire nodded at that, understanding. "But you think that would work if you can reach the bullets?"

Kasey gave a small nod. "I, uh... done it before-" she mumbled.

A look of concern crossed Matt's face. If she'd done it before, then that meant she had gotten hurt before, enough so to use her ability to retrieve bullets from her own body.

The thought chilled him to the bone. "How often do you have to use it like that?" He questioned.

Kasey put the coaster down. "Uh, not often, thankfully. I don't, uh, get shot often." She explained awkwardly.

Claire raised an eyebrow at that but nodded. "Can you do it with gloves?"

"Uh, not unless they are designed to let me."

Claire hummed softly. "Then let me sanitize your hands and we can give it a try."

Kasey nodded and followed her to the sink to let her work.

(warning time!!! Look for the next bold bit if you wish to skip!!)

"I'm sure this is gonna feel great..." Matt mumbled. Although, it was better than turning up at a hospital dressed like the devil, so he was grateful for it. He turned his head towards Foggy. "Thanks again for picking us up."

"Yeah, of course." Foggy agreed. "I wasn't gonna leave you there when you were injured."

Once Claire was content with Kasey's hands, she led her back over. "Okay. Where do you want to start?" She asked Matt. "We can either do your leg or your back."

Matt sat up, turning somewhat so his back was turned to them. He paused before speaking, letting his spinning head return to normal. "My back. It's the first wound, so it should probably be treated first."

Kasey nodded. "Claire, you..." She hesitated before sighing. "...You'll have to guide me to where I need to be." Her voice was soft and quiet.

Claire looked at her confused but remembered she wasn't able to read last time but... She just nodded. "Alright. Let me get this fabric off first."

She carefully undid the fabric around Matt's torso and then guided her hand to his back.

Kasey's heart was racing just a little bit as she wasn't used to doing it to other people. She was blind and therefore she really shouldn't be doing this but... If it made it easier on him then it was worth it. She owed him this much.

But she was certainly thankful to be blind during this cause she 100% would not have been able to otherwise.

"Okay, brace yourself." She told Matt before very carefully setting to work.

She winced a bit as she worked but it didn't take long for her to locate the bullet and very carefully withdrew it.

Foggy had gone to the other room cause he very much noped out but Claire was surprised to see Kasey pull it out and catch it in her hand. "There."

Claire nodded and moved over to quickly clean and start stitching up the wound so they could wrap it back up.

Matt tensed up, the feeling much different than having to take the bullet out via laceration or forceps. It was uncomfortable, but bearable. He was just glad that he wasn't completely awake, otherwise it would've bothered him a lot more than it was now. Once the bullet was out he relaxed, and stretched a bit. "I can definitely feel the difference."

"Good. Just try not to move too much or you'll pull the stitches." Claire was wrapping his torso again before looking at his leg. "You ready for the leg?" She asked him.

Kasey had kinda zoned out cause letting herself focus made her aware of the blood on her hand and she very much did not like.

"No, but it's got to get done anyway." He turned, putting his leg out for Claire to see. It really wasn't a great sight, with the wound looking pretty grotesque.

"You don't have to if you don't want to Kasey, I can handle a couple lacerations." He spoke up, noticing the difference in Kasey's attitude.

Kasey startled a little at her name, refocusing into the conversation. "I-It's fine. It'll heal faster this way..." She pointed out.

"She has a point." Claire agreed as she grimaced at the sight of his leg. "Geez... They really didn't want you getting up, huh?"

"They knew I'd be coming, so they came prepared to kill. Luckily, they had all the accuracy of a stormtrooper." He chuckled lightly, and presented wounded his leg for Kasey.

Claire guided her to the wounds and these were easier for her to do and Claire stitched him up. "The shots broke your leg. I'll have to reset it." She told him.

(Warning end!!!)

Kasey tilted her head. "I did that earlier, did it not stay?"

"Well, if you did it before you got here, then it probably undid from all the movement." Claire explained.

"Broken leg? Great." Matt had no idea how he'd explain all of this to both Kasey and Karen, once he was back as 'Matt' and not 'Daredevil'. "Thank you Kasey, and you too Claire."

Claire nodded. "Of course. I need to set the bone and I'm not sure how to cast it..." She pointed out.

"I... I think I have something that'll work and last a long time." Kasey offered. "You'll have to give me time to get it but I think I have something."

Claire looked at her. "Uh, alright. That works. I can go ahead and set the bone but that means not moving it for a while, understood?" She told Matt.

Matt didn't like the idea of being immobile for too long. If he couldn't go out and do what he did best... It would eat him up inside! Unfortunately Claire would kill him before he got the chance anyway. "Understood."

Claire nodded at that and Kasey scurried up the stairs and back outside after washing her hands off. "She's moving a lot better than she should." She pointed out.

Kasey sat out on the roof starting to knit her webbing thick and strong, falling into the rhythm of it with ease.

Matt returned to his lying position on the couch, keeping his leg straight and unmoving. "I pointed that out this morning as well, but she was pretty insistent on coming with me to get groceries. That is, until she got nabbed by those guys back there." He spoke low enough so Kasey wouldn't hear.

"Do you think she's... enhanced, I think is the term?" She asked him, keeping her voice low. "Not like Captain America but like..." She stopped realizing and looking more towards Matt than his leg. "She must be a spiderling."

Well, there goes that. Matt wouldn't have said anything for that idea, but he wouldn't say anything against it either. "I wasn't going to mention it, but you're clever as always."

Claire chuckled a bit. "I don't know if she wants me to know that so I'll wait for her to decide." She replied. "But that would explain a lot. Though there's still a lot that isn't explained..." She sighed.

"Are you ready for me to try to set the bone?" She asked him, not sure when Kasey would come back in and didn't want her to come into that.

"Yeah, it won't be pleasant, but I'm ready." At this point, Matt just wanted to get this done and over with, and get some rest. He was barely staying awake as is.

Claire took and deep breath and with a bit of force, reset the bone once more. "Alright, just... Don't move it." She told him.

Kasey finished the fabric and moved to stand up only to feel warm liquid and a bit of pain in the back of her leg and side.

Oh.

She held the fabric tight in her arms as got up, taking a moment for the dizziness to fade. She came back inside, trying not to focus on the feeling of blood pooling around her wounds again or the lightheadedness she was only now starting to feel.

How long had she been like this??

She stumbled onto the turn landing and hesitated, hearing Claire's voice.

"U-Um... M-Miss Claire??"

Claire turned to look at her and her eyes widened and was quickly pushing to her feet as Kasey finished talking,

"I think I-I pulled my s-stitches..." She dropped into Claire's embrace as she blacked out.

Claire's heart was racing as she quickly checked her over and found she had indeed pulled them and they'd been bleeding steadily for a while.

Claire also noticed she was becoming clammy and her breathing became more irregular.

"Foggy! I need a blanket!" She called out to him, making him poke his head out, see what was going on and quickly go to find one of Matt's blankets in his room.

With a grunt of displeasure, Matt's bone was set back where it belonged. That wasn't something he'd want to do over again, if he had the chance. He heard Kasey come back inside, and then a rush of sounds hit him. Everyone's heartbeats seemed to stagger, with Claire's and Foggy's speeding up and Kasey's seeming to slow.

Matt sat up, careful not to move his leg, but wanting to know what was happening. "What's going on with her?"

Claire looked over at him when Foggy handed her a blanket and she wrapped around Kasey, taking the strange fabric from her and setting it on the coffee table.

"She pulled her stitches. Doing what? I have no idea but they've been bleeding for a while." Claire explained as she carefully tried to work around her to try to stop the bleeding.

"Her body also seems to be going into shock. I'm not sure if it's just from her injuries or what but that's my main focus right now is to try to lessen that."

Foggy stood by, ready to help if Claire asked.

Matt's brow creased in worry, thinking back to the fight. She hadn't shown any sign of her stitches ripping, and she took down those guys like she didn't have any hindrances. Then his thought trail led to guilt. He cursed himself for letting her go out after getting those stitches, and for letting her fight when he couldn't.

Claire looked at Foggy for a moment. "Will you hang onto her for a minute while I wrap his leg?" She asked.

Foggy looked a bit surprised but nodded and took a seat as Claire picked her up.

She was a lot lighter than she thought she would be... that was concerning as well. She handed her over to Foggy who let her lay against his shoulder, still bundled in the blanket.

Claire grabbed the fabric and came over to Matt. "I'm going to help you turn and prop your leg up on the coffee table so I can wrap it, alright?"

"Yeah, alright." Matt's mind was preoccupied with Kasey, but he turned and gingerly propped his leg up on the coffee table for Claire.

"She'll be alright, right?" He asked, uncertainty lacking his voice.

Claire wrapped the silky fabric around his leg, thick and tight. She wasn't sure how Kasey made this but it worked surprisingly well. "If she can calm down from the shock then she'll be alright. She just needs a lot of rest like you. I can't re-stitch her until she comes around and I'm sure her body isn't in shock anymore." She explained.

Sure, Matt's body wanted to rest, but he didn't. He didn't want to be stuck on the couch for however long it would take for his leg to heal, unable to go out and do what he did best. "I shouldn't have taken her out today."

Claire gave him a sympathetic look as she finished wrapping his leg. "You didn't know that would happen. It's not your fault." She replied. "I saw how she was moving. Had it just been to the store or down the street for a bit, she would have been fine. But you two were forced into a fight. You didn't start it." She replied.

She glanced over at the sleeping teen in Foggy's arms and sighed. She knew that she was out cold just from how she looked. "Matt," She started, keeping her voice low. "if it wasn't for her, you would've been killed. Even if you argue with me, it doesn't change the fact that you were a dead man had it been anyone else they had snatched."

Foggy bit his lip slightly, looking away but he agreed with Claire. If they had bullets that pierced the armor and he was caught? He shook the thought away, it made him feel sick.

Matt opened his mouth to object, but ultimately knew she was right. Kasey had single-handedly taken out the rest of the men, and made it possible for them to get out of there. He had to hand it to her, she was strong. "I know. I'll have to plan around those bullets next time.."

Claire nodded. "I wonder if they somehow made them especially for you." She pointed out, leaning back against the table. "It just so happened to be Kasey they grabbed to draw you out."

Foggy nodded at that. "I wouldn't be surprised..."

Kasey was still breathing a bit oddly and her heartbeat was still a bit funky but she was slowly starting to come out of it.

Foggy noticed her shift a bit and let her move as she wanted and she curled right back up, still completely asleep. He gave a small chuckle. "She's out like a light..."

"I believe they did. They were pretty adamant on taking me down. Kasey would've just been a casualty of the fight, if she hadn't fought back." Matt pointed out.

"Sounds like she's slowly coming out of her shock too. Her heartbeat and breathing are slowly making their way back to normal." Matt told them, leaning his head back against the couch.

Claire nodded at that. "Good. Now, you both need to rest. I already took the rest of the day off to make sure you do." She told him, a small smirk tugging at her lips.

Foggy laughed a bit. "And I don't think Karen is expecting me back at the office for the rest of the day."

Matt let out a sigh, ultimately deciding that they were right to tell him to rest. He had been putting it off for too long, and his body was begging him to sleep. "Fine, I'll rest."

"Good. I'll check in in a few hours. I'm gonna keep an eye on Kasey and see if I can get her patched up. You alright with me letting her rest in your room if you are gonna stay on the couch?" She asked him.

Kasey's breathing had finally evened back out as she slept against Foggy's shoulder.

"I'm fine with that, it will be more comfortable for her there too." Matt replied with a tired nod.

Claire nodded. "Alright." She came over to Foggy and offered to take Kasey but he shook his head. "I got her." He told her softly, standing with her still tucked in his arms and carrying her to Matt's room for Claire to deal with her.

Foggy came back out to let Claire work unless she called him.

Claire confirmed it was safe for her to stitch up Kasey again and carefully did so. Kasey would flinch slightly but wouldn't wake up. Soon she was all cleaned up and patched up and curled up on Matt's bed, sound asleep.

She chuckled softly at the sight and settled on the floor nearby to keep watch for a bit to make sure all was good.

Matt readjusted himself on the couch, finally letting himself relax. It didn't take him long to pass out, sleep taking hold of his mind.

It didn't take long for all four of them to drift off, Claire and Foggy taking shifts.
