Chapter 107
A few days passed and Kade had finally made something to counter what was slowing the healing factors down and had given it to Peter and Aurora, allowing them to properly start healing.
Aurora had felt better not long after reviving the new counter. The ache had subsided for the most part, and her healing had taken over.
Peter had been too, slowly allowing himself to start making more noises as his throat healed which had made him very happy. He was looking around for Aurora and spotted her and grinned, silently coming up behind her and grabbing her shoulders. "Boo!"
Aurora's spider senses were very attuned. Indeed they protected her well from many things. Unfortunately, they did not warn her of mischievous teenage boys. As a result, she nearly jumped out of her skin and spun on her heel. "I see you're feeling better! You're lucky I didn't clock you!"
He laughed a bit. "I would have dodged!" He replied.
"Oh I'm sure you would've." She told him, still sour from the scare. She had to admit, it was nice to hear his actual voice instead of his phone's automated voice.
"Anyway-" He grinned at her. "I was wondering if you wanted to spar or go for a swing nearby?" He asked. "I've been eager to do something."
"Me too. Call it cabin fever but I'm itching to do something." She shrugged. "If we spar I can use that as a test run for the suit."
"Oh yeah! That could be fun!" He agreed. "To the training room then?"
"To the training room." She repeated back. It would be good to get some exercise and practice in before they were able to patrol again.
Kasey and Matt had been training whenever the two were busy with something else but Kasey refused to get into a fight with him still.
His leg had healed significantly as well as most of his other injuries, allowing him to move much easier and with no more pain.
Kasey was getting ready to train with him again that evening as he had started showing her a few fighting based moves that were focused on taking the enemy down without too much injury since she had been so anxious about it.
Matt had been making the best of his new movement. Maybe that glitch switch hadn't been entirely bad after all. Even Claire had been impressed by the healing. Matt had convinced himself that the other him deserved the broken leg, if that's what had happened.
"Ready?" He asked Kasey. Her friends were busy, so he wanted to use the opportunity to train her some more. He'd been using as much time as he could get to school her.
Kasey took a deep breath. "Yeah." She agreed, stretching a bit. "I'm ready." she agreed, unsure of what he had planned for tonight.
"I've got two things I want to try tonight. The first is for you to put your trust in your spider sense. The second is for you to ignore it altogether." Matt said, in a matter of fact manner.
Kasey tilted her head. "That's... literally polar opposites-" She replied, confused.
"I'm aware." He didn't go much into detail, but had planned this out for the past couple days. He didn't know if it would work, but he'd try. "I'm going to come at you, and I'm not going to pull any punches or let up any. Hopefully your senses will kick in then."
"Wait, you're going to do wh-!" She didn't have any time to finish when she dodged one of his swings. "Matt- I don't want to fight!" She sounded a little distressed.
"You're going to be caught off guard a lot of times Kasey-" He took another swing at her before dropping for a low sweep.
She barely jumped out of the way in time, stumbling when she landed. "I know that!" She replied, taking a few steps back, listening for him. "That still doesn't change the fact that I don't want to fight!"
Matt frowned but pushed on. He needed her to do this. "You've got to work with your senses. You can't let it control you." He said coldly, going for a low hit.
She gasped as she jumped to the side, sliding a bit on the mat when she landed. He wasn't letting up or stopping.
But she refused to fight back. "I am- I'm dodging you, aren't I?"
"Yeah, you are." Matt grinned. Looks like it was working after all. So he continued, spinning and sending a kick towards her side.
She back flipped out of the way of the kick. "I'm not entirely sure what you're wanting out of this-"
"Are you stressed?" Matt asked, continuing his assault. He wanted to know if she'd be able to use her senses, without them taking her over.
"I- no?" She replied. "Kind of but not- Not really?" She dodged another attack. "I- I know you wouldn't seriously hurt me so that helps but-" This time he landed the hit sending her tumbling across the mat with gasp.
"I'm seriously sparring with you Kasey. Don't view me as a friend in this fight." He told her between moves, sending another hit her way.
She rolled out of the way, pushing back to her feet. "But I don't want to fight back!"
"Tough." Matt told her coldly. Although he was continuously throwing punches and kicks her way, he was impressed to see that she had dodged all but one so far. Seemed her spider senses were living up to their name.
Kasey dodged again, panting a bit. "What? Do you want me to hurt you again?!" She asked him, still trying to avoid fighting back.
"I'm seeing how far your control reaches." Matt told her, keeping the same tone.
She dodged another attack before trying to sweep his legs out from under him. "I don't know what you mean by that!" She hated the tone he was using and he could hear the way her heartbeat changed from the anxiety.
Matt jumped to the side, narrowly dodging the move. He went for another roundhouse kick towards her. "It means keep moving!"
She gasped in pain when it collided with her side, sending her back to the ground, stunning her for a minute but when he got close and kicked out at him, a lot of power behind the kick.
That last hit must've done something, as she seemed to be coming at him seriously. Matt dodged the kick, leaning down to go in for another hit. "Control, Kasey."
She moved swiftly out of the way, to her feet, spinning and kicked at him without a response.
Matt took the kick and stumbled backwards. Hearing silence from her wasn't a good sign. He dropped down, going for another low sweep. "You're letting it get the better of you kid-"
Her posture suddenly relaxed but she narrowly dodged out of the way of the low sweep. "I-I-" She sounded a bit disoriented. "I didn't mean to-"
Improvement. "Don't try apologizing. Focus and keep control. The ball is in your court." Matt told her, once again continuing the fight.
Another dodge but her tension came back and she kicked out at him again, landing it on his chest.
Matt fell backwards onto the mat with a soft thud, followed by him rolling to the side and pushing himself back up. "Fight against it while fighting against me."
He didn't have a lot of time before she was swinging at him again, no response coming from her.
Matt took another hit and retaliated, going for a blow to the side. "You're losing yourself again Kasey."
She hit the mat with a thud and when he got close, she rolled onto her back and kicked out, hitting him square in the chest again but mid strike she came back around but was unable to stop herself before she hit him. "No- wait-!"
A sickening crack came from his chest as she sent him tumbling backwards with the solid powerful strike.
Matt was forced back down onto the mat, letting out a sharp gasp from the hit. Yeah, he had expected to get hurt during the training, but damn did it hurt! It took him a moment to recover from the wind being knocked out of him. By that time, the sparring had come to a halt.
Kasey had pushed herself up, hearing him hit the mat and the crack from his chest and- Tears filled her eyes. "I-I-" She scooted back. "I'm sorry-" The tears spilled down her face. "I told you, I didn't want to fight-"
When Matt spoke, his voice was rough. "Don't apologize. I was trying to push you, and I got you where you needed to be. You were improving, pushing past the senses' control." He went to push himself up with a groan.
"I didn't want to hurt you-" She curled up, remaining sitting on the mat.
"Kasey, I came into this fight fully expecting to get hurt. Don't pin this on yourself." Matt told her. Goodness knows he's survived a lot more than whatever that was.
"But I couldn't stop it!" She replied back. "I- I couldn't-" She felt more tears spill.
"Kasey, breathe. This is what I was trying to bring to the surface, and you overcame your senses a couple times during the fight." Matt tried to explain to her.
She took a deep breath and rubbed at her face. "But what happens if I can't stop it next time? If you don't get up from one of the hits-"
She was very aware that she absolutely could kill Matt if she wasn't careful.
"That won't happen." Matt told her, speaking steadily. He wanted to keep her grounded. "That's why we're going to work on keeping those senses under your control, and working with them instead of then working against you."
She sighed softly, rubbing the last of the tears away and nodded. "Did I break anything? I heard something crack-" She asked him.
"Heh. That part I'm not sure about. Let's stick with probably yes." Matt brushed it off. "Don't beat yourself up over it."
She started to argue but sighed, knowing it would get nowhere. "Okay." She agreed before pushing herself to her feet.
"Are... are you wanting to keep going?" She asked him reluctantly.
"This next part is a lot less painful for both of us." Matt chuckled and pushed himself up. He figured he'd get himself looked at afterwards. "This is where you don't move. If you trust me, you won't move, even if your senses tell you to."
She stood there in confusion for a minute but gave a nod. "Okay... I'll try." She agreed.
At least he didn't want her to fight back this time-
"Stand there, but don't move." Matt stretched, estimating his limits. He wouldn't hurt her, and if she didn't move, he wouldn't even touch her. But he would come at her with the intent to. His first move was throwing a punch directly towards her gut, planning to stop centimeters from her body.
She slightly moved backwards but kept her feet planted on the mat, her senses buzzing at her, having caused her to lean back a bit.
"Don't move." Matt repeated, turning and sending a kick towards her shoulder.
She didn't this time but she did tense, her senses buzzing again. She stayed put. He could hear the way her heart would pick up every time he moved to "hit" her.
Matt was glad to know she learned from the first time. He took a quick step back and sent a fist straight towards her head.
But that was enough to make her senses force her to take a step back, her body tense and on edge as she tried to keep it from reacting too much.
Matt sighed, but continued his not-attack. He pushed past the pain from the previous hit and went for her again.
She flinched but stayed put this time, sticking her feet to the mat.
"Keep that control." Matt spoke. One last fake hit and then he'd call it good. He spun on his heel, sending a kick towards her head. Stopping, of course, inches from her.
Kasey didn't move, just took a sharp inhale, not noticing the two new pairs of eyes watching them from the doorway, too focused on Matt.
Matt stopped with expert precision, and slowly brought himself back into a standing position. "There. That should be good, for today at least."
"What. The. Hell." Aura spoke up from the doorway, unable to hold back her thoughts. After all, the blind lawyer was sparring.
Peter also was standing there in shock at the sight before them as Kasey whirled around to face them.
"Holy-" She put a hand on her chest, having been thoroughly spooked by them. "W-When did you guys get here?"
Matt was mentally going through his list of known curses, but kept a cool demeanor on the outside. He didn't know how he hadn't picked up on their heartbeats sooner.
"Uh, just a few minutes ago." Aurora pointed out, in a matter of fact tone. "So you gonna tell us what that was all about??"
"And how???" Peter added, confused.
Kasey could hear his heart racing and wasn't sure what to say. "I- We were testing my control of my spider sense." She explained carefully.
"Okay, that explains the reason for the training but not how he was doing all of that." Last she knew, the guy had to have someone leading him by the arm around the entire place.
Matt pinched the bridge of his nose and let out a tired sigh. He didn't have the energy to make up some extensive lie for all this. "My father was a boxer. Learned a lot from him when I was a kid."
That had Kasey turning towards him. That was new information.
Peter tilted his head. "So it's just muscle memory?" He asked curiously. "What about how close you were to actually making contact with Kasey?"
Kasey turned to Peter. "We made sure he was standing far enough back that he wouldn't actually hit me. We were testing to see if I could resist my spider sense." She explained.
Matt nodded. "Exactly. I didn't want to lose that muscle memory, so every so often I brush up on the skills." Matt told the kid, glad he took that. "Figured I could at least help her train somehow."
Aurora looked skeptical, but didn't say anything past that. She had already been thinking about a lot of weird connections, but what Tony had said before was true. She shouldn't pry into it. "Was it working?"
Kasey shrugged. "Kind of?" She replied. "On and off but mostly? I think?"
Peter smiled at that. "That's good! That's progress, Kasey!"
"Hey, that's an improvement!" Aurora complimented her. She knew Kasey had been having some issues with her senses.
"You just have to remember how it feels to control them, and use that whenever you're fighting." Matt said, putting on his blind man act to go find the bench where he had set down a couple towels earlier.
Kasey nodded and quickly hurried to his side to "guide" him over to it, taking one for herself. "It should hopefully help." She agreed. "I'm still a bit nervous about it but... It's progress." She smiled.
"Progress is progress. We'll keep working on it too. Maybe mix it up a bit." He wouldn't spoil too much past that.
"From what I saw, I'd say it's looking pretty good." Aurora nodded, thinking over what they had seen.
Kasey looked at Matt, squinting at him suspiciously but said nothing.
Peter nodded. "You think you'll be up to spar with us again soon?"
Kasey turned to them. "Hopefully." she agreed.
Matt just grinned back at her, wordlessly.
"Next time without holding back?" Aurora asked with a smile. She didn't blame Kasey at all for how the last spar went.
"Only if you're fully healed." She replied back with a small smile.
"Well, Kade has figured out how to get our healing factors going again so we should be!" Peter replied.
"Yep!" Aurora clapped her hands together. "In fact, we just stopped by for a bit of training ourselves. Figured I'd be a little rusty."
"Oh! Yeah- It'd probably be good to warm those muscles back up-" She agreed with a nod.
"And to test out the new suit I made." She gestured to the one she was wearing, given, she wasn't wearing her mask. That was still the old one so she went without it.
"Oh- right! You had to make a new one from scratch, right? How'd it turn out?" She asked, hearing her gesture to the suit making a small smirk tug at her lips.
Aurora nearly hit herself in the face. Jeez she was so forgetful sometimes. "Sorry. It turned out good, looks basically the same but I want to make sure it holds up the same too. I think it's the last handmade one before I start using the fabricators."
"The fabricators would help a lot." She agreed with a small nod. "Especially since it seems yours gets torn up a lot."
"That's not my fault! Apparently people just like to use me for target practice." Aurora shrugged. She'd gotten a bit better in the past few days, in dealing with some of her issues.
"I'm not sure if that would be a compliment or an insult-" Peter noted, thoughtfully.
Kasey laughed at that. "I mean- Depends on context??"
"Hm. Like Kasey said. It would probably depend on the situation and how much I dislike them." She shrugged again, unbothered.
Peter laughed at that. "Alright then-" He stepped onto the mat. "Ready when you are."
Aura shook off some nerves and stepped onto the mat. Honestly, fighting with someone she knew would be a welcome difference than fighting against someone who wanted to kill her. So, she set off and started the match.
