Back on the Grind
You sat stiffly in one of the plastic chairs outside of Principal Nezu's office. You had been instructed to do go there via a call early yesterday morning. You hadn't been waiting long but still your mind ran rampant with what the director of the school could possibly have to say to you. Were you going to be expelled? After all what you did was pretty bad and it wouldn't be entirely out of the question. Then why go through the effort of suspending you? Maybe they were still deciding what to do about you.
You were cracking your fingers nervously when Nezu's door finally opened. You were shocked to see Monoma sauntering out. But it wasn't the fact that it was him that had caught your breath. It was the dark bruising that painted his neck that made you recoil in fear and confusion.
Monoma glanced at you, a twinge of uneasiness read in his eyes before he scowled and stomped out of the building. The ghastly sight of those injuries on his skin haunted your memory. Had you done that?
"Miss (l/n), please step inside," a calm voice from within the office called. You sighed quietly to yourself and did so.
"Good morning, Miss (l/n), I am Principal Nezu," a small, white rodent like creature greeted you. He wore a simple red tie, a buttoned vest, and black slacks to match. A long scar bore over his right eye. "We are here to discuss some serious matters but before we begin would you like some tea?"
"Ah, no thank you," You declined with a polite smile and took a seat in front of his desk. It was probably best to stay attentive and well-mannered.
He gave you a shrug clambered onto his chair which seemed just a tiny bit bigger than him. "Well then, where to begin?" He smiled sweetly and skimmed through a file in front of him. You tried to lean in to catch a glimpse but the angle you were at wasn't letting you.
"It seems you caused quite the stir last week," Principal Nezu hummed as he sipped his tea. "Tell me, what can you recall from that day?"
You stared pensively at the ground. "Um...we were going out for joint training with the other class and Monoma...he's one of my classmates, was making some demeaning comments towards me. I-I got mad, and well...I don't remember anything after that."
The rodent nodded. "Were you aware that you were both hospitalized following the incident?"
"Uh, yes." Monoma's image came back to your conscious. "What happened to Monoma...that was me?"
"I'm afraid so."
The concern on your face deepened. "I'm so sorry. I don't know what I did or how it happened, but I didn't mean to do that."
"What's done is done. We have to focus on what we will be doing moving forward." He closed the file and sat intently at his desk. "Did the hospital run any tests on you while you were there? Anything to explain your sudden quirk development?"
"No, as far as I know."
Nezu hummed thoughtfully. "Miss (l/n), would you be devastated if you were to face expulsion for your actions that day?"
"Yes," You breathed out. "Extremely. Being able to study here...it's all I've ever wanted."
"Well then, it appears we can come to a compromise," He smiled joyfully and clapped his paws together. "You see during your momentary lapse in memory you had managed to fend off some of the faculty which is more than a little worrisome. No one seems to be able to explain it, but your new abilities could be a threat to other students. Our job is to make sure they are safe and looked after. That brings me to my proposition."
He sat back and folded his palms in his lap. "In order for you to remain at UA I would like for you to enlist with some quirk specialists to better understand the manifestation and nature of your second quirk. You will also begin training with some of the staff periodically to work on it. Additionally, you will need to refrain from using both of your quirks for the time being. Activating your Supernova quirk is permissible if it is only being used for schoolwork." Noting your diminished expression, he gave you a lamentable simper. "It's best to be safe than sorry, my dear."
"Is that all?" You asked with a disappointed sigh.
"Well that covered your continuation here at the school, however punishment for what transpired is yet to be discussed. After all, you did severely injure a student."
You wanted let out a massive exhale but you knew you had to be nice. "Sir, you do know that Monoma was bullying me way before the day of the joint practice, right? Or did he forget to mention that?"
"Oh no, we investigated the entire situation after that day and many students recounted Monoma's unacceptable misconduct. I can assure you he is facing the same discipline you are," Nezu guaranteed. "As a matter of fact, you both will be attending detention with Miss Miyumi today after class as well as receive counseling from Miss Daniels."
"Both? As in, together?" You questioned incredulously. "Is that a good idea?"
"Well aside from serving your time after school we also want to encourage the two of you to get along. Who knows maybe one day you may be working together as Pros. It's in your best interest to maintain neutral ground."
"I guess..."
The rodent suddenly gasped. "Ah! I almost forgot. Aside from these guidelines, we have also prepared to transfer you over to Class 1-A."
Your mouth stood agape. "What?"
"We have no doubt that Sekijirou was doing a wonderful job as your instructor, however we thought it best to have a teacher who could better keep an eye on you. Aizawa was deemed more suited for the task."
You thought about your friends in 1-B, Itsuka and Ibara, and your heart sunk. "B-but I've been in this class since the beginning of the school year—"
"If you're worried about your schoolwork and if it'll affect your grades, I can promise that it won't."
"It's not that..." You drifted off.
The principal frowned for a second before realization dawned on him. "Ohh, I see. Your friends I presume?" You nodded meekly. "I know this may be a difficult transition for you, but I can assure you that this is a necessary precaution. The display of power you demonstrated that day at practice was something that alarmed all the faculty involved. If it's any consolation, you will still be able to see your friends in between classes and during lunch times."
Your chest felt like it was being tangled into an inescapable knot, but you knew he was right. Not only were they doing this to help you, but to protect those around you. You nodded reluctantly. "I understand."
"I'm glad we could come to this conclusion," Principal Nezu smiled. "Now, how does this sound to you? Are willing to go through with these promises and stay here at UA?"
You tightened your lips and let out a sigh. "This is a lot to process..."
"Yes...but it is entirely your decision. You are the one who gets to make the choice," He comforts. "This is simply an offer."
An offer with a bunch of catches, you said derisively to yourself. But still, it wasn't like they were asking anything out of your capabilities. You'd just be receiving more training and habilitation than the other students. Also, you'd be under quirk-arrest for god knows how long. It felt like you were being restricted from everything at every turn.
Was this what you wanted? Were you willing to give up your free will in order to pursue your dream of becoming a hero?
You furrowed your brows in thought. "Principal Nezu...if I agree to this, does that mean I can't back out if I were to want to later on?"
"No, of course not. This isn't a binding contract, these are a set of regulations which we would like you to follow if you so choose to remain at UA. You may always end or refuse the guidelines, however you won't be allowed back at the school otherwise."
"Okay," You nodded, the full picture finally seeping in. What you were agreeing to wasn't set in stone that meant you weren't resigning yourself to anything that could possibly put you in a perilous predicament later on. "Okay, I accept."
"Splendid," the rodent grinned and set down his tea cup. "All preparations for your transfer have been arranged and scheduled. If you have any questions about the correctional meetings later today feel free to ask your homeroom teacher, Aizawa." He handed you a short stack of paperwork and intertwined his paws. "This is just some minor information for you to get better situated in class. And I believe someone is waiting outside to escort you to your new class."
You glanced back quickly and breathed out a soft chuckle. "Uh, thank you, Principal Nezu. I truly appreciate what you've done for me. I honestly thought I....well, that I would be expelled."
"I'm happy we could work things out," He said contently. "Now off you go. You wouldn't want to be late on your first day."
"Right. Thank you so much, Principal Nezu!" You beamed with gratitude as you hurriedly shoved the papers in your book bag. The rodent waved goodbye with a laugh while you rushed out the door nearly running into someone standing outside.
To your astonishment, it was the cute boy you had met in the infirmary and sparred with at practice. "Midoriya! Hey!" You said brightly.
He blushed. "I'm surprised you remembered me. I've been told I'm rather plain-looking."
"Plain? You're far from plain. You have fluffy, green hair!" You joked and softly ruffling his tuft, his face reddening at your touch. He thought you were just being nice but he appreciated your compliment nonetheless.
"Not to offend or anything, but you don't strike me as the type of guy who gets sent to the Principal's office. What brings you down here?" You asked.
"A-actually, Aizawa asked me to come down to escort you to class," Midoriya replied excitedly. "I hear you're going to be joining 1-A."
Aizawa had reached out to him that morning as soon as he arrived. When he was told the news he was ecstatic. Since your first meeting he had been hoping to see you again. You were a student in the hero course with a healing ability however it didn't seem like that was your quirk. Midoriya was left wondering what your true power was, but soon after the incident with the 1-B student occurred. Now he had more questions.
The male had heard all the rumors but wouldn't believe them. He wanted the answers to come from you. You were this strange being he just couldn't wrap his head around. Attractive and mysterious to his whirring curiosity.
"That's right," You sighed and slung your backpack on one arm, "I can't believe this is really happening."
Midoriya watched you sympathetically. "You a sound a little disappointed."
"Not disappointed exactly, more like overwhelmed. I gotta restart my first day of school again and I'm gonna be the new kid. Not to mention I'm leaving behind some friends in 1-B."
He had been so enthusiastic about your transfer he didn't take into account your own feelings. Guilt washed over him as he bit his lip. "That's true, but think on the bright side. At least you know a couple people in class. There's Kirishima, Ashido, Sero, Kaminari, me, and Kacchan."
You frowned slightly. "Kacchan?"
"Ah, I mean Bakugou."
"Oh right, you have a nickname for him, I remember," You hummed. "Where did 'Kacchan' even come from though?"
"Well we were neighbors when we were little so we played together often..." Midoriya continued with his story, happy to take your mind off the daunting nature of your sudden circumstance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"How cute!" You laughed as Midoriya recounted the time 'Kacchan' was so angry he exploded his quirk in his face and the school had to call his mother to pick him up because he wouldn't stop crying. "Poor baby..."
"Yeah, although he sung a different tune about the events of that day. He was always very stubborn," Midoriya chuckled, a pink tint creeping onto his face. He was still nervous to talk to you but seeing you laugh somehow made it easier. He was embarrassed by the fact he had frozen up the first time he met you, but he was more adjusted now. You weren't just a pretty face and he hoped you two could potentially become friends.
"I don't doubt it."
Your voices hushed as you came upon a large door engraved with the figures '1A'. It seemed to loom over you, mysterious and impending with whatever awaited you on the other side.
"Nervous?"
"Kinda," You nodded, staring up at the chunk of metal. "But what's the worst thing that could happen?"
"I think you're going to like it here," Midoriya beamed. "Here, let's go in." You reluctantly complied as the door slid open and every head inside snapped to pay attention. You swallowed your anxieties and walked in behind the male.
You clasped your hands together to keep them from shaking as about 20 pair of eyes followed your every move. With your teeth clamped shut, you strode over to Eraser Head who was hunched over a chalkboard.
"Aizawa-Sensei, (l/n) is here," Midoriya spoke up.
The scruffy man rolled his glance over to you. "Great, let's find a seat for you," he groaned tiredly as he picked up a clipboard and flipped through its contents. He made a couple of quick marks on it before resting his pen on his chin thoughtfully. "Alright, let's have you sit behind Midoriya, next to Tokoyami. And Mineta you're sitting in between Ojirou and Shoji."
"If you're in need of any notes Midoriya going to be your best bet," Aizawa explained. "Now, is there anything you wanna say before I resume?"
"Um..." Your mind was blanking as you faced the dozens of eyes staring at you. Your heart was running a marathon, your hands clammy with nervousness when suddenly a ruby gaze halted you. You recognized the fellow with the ash blond locks and smiled warmly. A sense of relief waved over you and your arms' quaking steadied just a bit. "Hello, I'm (l/n) (y/n) and I'm from 1-B. I know things are rocky between the two classes, but I hope we can put that aside and get along," You finished with a friendly grin.
The class's stiff demeanor shifted away from tenseness to something you could only describe as common ground. You even saw a couple of amicable faces with a twinkle in their eye.
"Alright, take your seat," Aizawa instructed, turning back to the board. "As I was saying, calculating trajectory and physics with math is essential to heroism..."
As you walked over to your seat, you locked gazes with Katsuki who was frowning but looking very much interested in how the hell you got there. You gave him a quick beam and slid into your desk as Midoriya did the same.
The green haired boy shot you a thumbs up. "See? Not too bad right?" He whispered. You rolled your eyes playfully and shook your head.
Just then, a soft buzz sounded from your pocket. You discreetly spied your phone's screen and read the incoming message.
Katsucky: What the fuck are you doing here??
Sparkler: I'm invading your classroom
Katsucky: I'm serious you little shit
Sparkler: What do you think? I got transferred
Katsucky: How the??
Sparkler: No texting in class, hoe
Explain later
You sent your reply and shoved the phone back in your skirt. You could practically hear Katsuki fuming from where he was sitting. However, this didn't stop you from laughing off his frustration and proceeding to take out a notebook and jot down whatever Aizawa had written on the board.
Things had gone smoothly that hour. No one really talked or acknowledged you other than Sero who sat one seat away from you beside Midoriya. He turned around once with one of his bright smiles and pretended to shoot himself in the head from the boring lecture. But the lesson finally came to a halt when a sharp ring sounded waking several students.
"Alright, we'll pick up on question 17 when you get back from lunch," Aizawa announced as he pulled out a giant yellow sleeping bag and climbed inside of it.
You were slightly bewildered by this but were soon sidetracked when Midoriya turned around in his chair. "Hey, um, do you maybe want have lunch with us? Since it's your first day and all."
You opened your mouth to respond but a loud stomp on his desk alarmed you. "Fuck no she doesn't want to. She's sitting with us," Bakugou growled, his foot firmly on the desk and leaning over the green haired boy.
"Oh, I-I just thought maybe she'd feel more comfortable if she got to meet other people in class," Midoriya said as his face went pale.
Kirishima witnessed the debacle going on and wandered over to you three. "Maybe you should let (y/n) decide, man. You're not her dad."
"Stay out this, shitty hair."
You frowned. "Actually, I—"
"Oh but she has to eat with us! It's her first day in 1-A!" Mina whined.
"Um, guys I—"
"Deku? Are you coming?" A girl with short brown hair stepped forward. You believed her name was Uraraka.
"Y-yeah, I was just inviting (l/n) to lunch with us."
"Which she ain't going to, you broccoli bitch," venomously replied Bakugou.
"What's with all the yelling?" Sero sighed, getting involved. "Don't you ever get tired?"
Your eye twitched. "Hey—"
Kaminari then interjected. "Yo! So I found this app that predicts your porn star name—"
"WOULD YOU ALL SHUT THE FUCK UP FOR ONE SECOND!?"
They all whipped around to stare in shock, but you didn't have enough to care. "First of all, no one was talking to you," You spat at Katsuki. "And second of all, I will sit with whoever I goddamn please."
You inhaled sharply. "Third! Does it really fucking matter? Can't we all just sit together?"
They all looked at each other questioningly (other than Bakugou) and shrugged. "I don't see why not," Sero mused.
You could sense the ash blond about to shout something so you clamped your palm over his mouth. "Great! Then please, let's leave." You stole a glance at Katsuki who was driving daggers back at you, but you just smiled back and let go to squeeze his arm. "Please."
He peered at you before finally huffing out a puff of annoyance. "Fuckin' glow stick."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I'm Iida Tenya, also Classroom 1-A's Representative," a boy with metal framed glasses and smooth blue hair shook your hand once you all sat down.
"Don't mind him, he's a bit stiff sometimes. I'm Uraraka Ochako! We fought during practice," the friendly girl grinned.
"Right! I'm (l/n) (y/n). You have a pretty cool quirk by the way!"
Katsuki rested his hand on his jaw and grumbled to himself as he watched you interact with the others. That genuine twinkle in your eye only served to further his annoyance as he poked the meal before him.
"Look at our girl, already making other friends," Mina chirped happily. "It seems like she's gonna fit right in with the rest of us."
Kaminari scoffed. "Yeah if Bakugou would stop towering over her like a parent. What's your deal, man?"
The ash blond shot them a glare and continued to fiddle with his plate. Perhaps he was going a little overboard. After all, you were part of the class now. You'd be conversing with these people on the daily which meant you'd need to get to know everyone. There was just some little section of his consciousness that was trying to convince him to keep you to himself. He'd needed to shut that piece of him up.
"Hey," Kirishima suddenly spoke once they were on their way home from the arcade. They had dropped you off a couple minutes ago along with Kaminari and the girls. Now it was just the two of them. "I was surprised you actually showed up today. I thought what you had said this afternoon was so you could get me off your back."
"Who said it wasn't?" Bakugou remarked, but one look at the red head's disbelieving face was enough for him to roll his eyes and hiss. "You said it was for (y/n)."
"I didn't know you cared so much about her."
"I don't!"
"Then why were you worried?" Kirishima urged. "You didn't seem interested until I mentioned her."
"Because, shitty hair! Do I need a goddamn reason for everything?"
"It's just a question, man."
Bakugou exhaled, clearly vexed. "Why do you wanna know so bad anyway?"
The red head sighed with a shrug. "I don't know... 'cause I care about her."
Katsuki abruptly stopped in his tracks and turned to stare at Kirishima. Confusion and curiousity were etched on his face. "You do?"
"Yeah...do you?"
He didn't know what to say. He knew the truth was yes, but he felt like an idiot if he admitted to that. He swallowed back his nerves, his eyebrows knitting together deep in thought. "I..."
"...she's a friend, so yeah...I guess I do."
Kirishima watched his expression intently. "I see...so she's a friend...." He inhaled softly and smiled. "I'm glad."
What did that fucker mean by that? Katsuki glanced up to see you were chatting up Kirishima and Deku. The red head was saying something that was making you crack up and he looked very pleased in doing so. Bakugou felt a twinge of something troubling in his chest. Something he couldn't quite pinpoint as agitation or anger.
However, he didn't get to ponder this brewing emotion when someone came up behind you and Katsuki. You both felt the presence and turned to find a younger looking woman smiling down at you. With her was the copycat that had sparked all these recent events into motion.
"Hello," her voice was soft and polite. "Are you (l/n) (y/n)?"
What a slow burn am I right? Damn it I love those. Anywho, I'm working on the next one and I'm excited to see where the story is going. As always I love reading your feedback and your thoughts as well as any theories you may have. The love and support this book has received is immense and I can't ask for a better audience. Thank you so much for even giving this story the time of day! Hopefully, I'll see you all real soon!
