Chapter 10 - Not Alone

Peril's POV

He was going.

Without her.

She was going to be alone.

It had just started to sink in that Peril still didn't really have anyone to talk to with Clay away in the rain forest. She wanted to have her friends by her side so badly now.

'I should tell them. Clay's friends know. So should mine.' Peril glanced out at the rays of sunlight squeaking through the barrier. She wanted to turn that stupid rock to a pile of ashes, but she couldn't yet. Not everyone knew.

But it wasn't like other dragons would come snooping around her cave would they? They had nothing to suspect. Well, apart from that Peril had been away from school for a while.

Well, what did others care? No one really liked her anyway. Unless...

They hated her.

Wanted to kill her.

Peril shuddered, and wrapped her tail more firmly around the egg. She could take care of herself. After all, SHE was the one with the MELT-YOUR-FACE scales.

"Alright Peril, be smart about it."

Peril got some rocks as fast as she could and placed them around the egg, so it would be a little more safe.
Then, when Peril felt it was well-protected, She left her cave, closing the barrier firmly behind her.

Warm sunlight cascaded over the reds  and coppers of Peril's scales. She breathed in deep and sighed. She could do this. She'd done it twice. She could do this.

Peril walked around the caves twirling around when no one was there. Peril got so absorbed that she almost bashed into a small SkyWing dragonet.

"WOAH!" She shouted, flaring her wings and stumbling backwards. Peril took a few steps back, giving the SkyWing some space.

"I haven't see you before." Said Peril. She hoped it came out as friendly as she was aiming for.

"Yeah, I'm new. Some other SkyWing wanted to go home, so I replaced him." She shifted her wings, "I'm  Crag, by the way."

"Crag..." Peril was surprised. This SkyWing didn't seem to hate her, though she must know she was a firescales, because she was careful not to crash into her. Peril wondered why she wasn't grumbling or being mad like other SkyWings did when they were around her.

'Maybe Crag is different.'

Peril blinked, then smiled sheepishly, realizing there had been a long silence and a lot of staring.

"Okay. That's cool. Err... My name's Peril." Peril folded in her wings and zipped past her, continuing on her way towards her friends.

Moon's POV

"Today's the day we tell Peril that we know."

"You don't think I remember?"

"No, I just..."

"Yeah. I'm nervous too."

Moon and Qibli sat next to each other, waiting for Turtle to show up. Their tails were coiled together, and their talons were softly touching.

"He's here!" Turtle walked into the room, looking more worried than Qibli and Moon put together. He worried one claw between his teeth and started pacing the cave.

Moon and Qibli stood up, brushed wings with him and they all headed out of the cave.

Right into Peril.

They all jumped back, wings flaring and tails lashing.

"I'm sorry I'm sorry!" Turtle rushed out. Peril nodded and waved her talons.

"It's okay. Actually, I was looking for you guys." Turtle and Moon exchanged nervous glances, provoking Peril to cock her head.

Moon felt the crackling wall of fire as strong as normal. It wasn't flickering like it had around a week ago.

"We have, too." Said Qibli. He beckoned them all into the cave, and they sat down, Peril on one side and the others sat opposite.

"You go first."

"No, you go first." Peril sighed and circled her claw on the stone floor.

"I have been meaning to tell you this for a long time. For ages.

"I'm with egg."

There was a silence.

"We already knew," Moon stuttered out. She ducked her head along with Turtle, and Qibli looked away.

"You did?" Moon glanced up. She was glad to see that Peril looked curious, not angry. She let out the breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding, and before she could say anything Turtle jumped in.

"We were worried about you. We could tell something was wrong. So... we sorta... well, we were being cruel to be kind... we spied on you."

"Spied?" Peril exclaimed, "How did I not realize?"

"You weren't in your right mind."

"Well," Said Peril with a smile, "I am now.
