Chapter 31 -
Dancing On The Edge Of Mystery

Through the forest the night creatures were out and about, making noises of the night, though some of the silence. This is because they go silent when someone is near, or walking about.

A critter huddling under a bush stayed still, it watched a pair of footsteps run by before going about its business.

The dark figure pushed past thick vegetation and finally gets closer to their destination as the smell of salty air waffles around.

They stared at the sharp black rocks that scattered all around the cliffside. Their eyes followed the direction it was leading and their fists clench.

Their first attempt for a bandit to do their work had failed since there was no bargain exchange and that bandit got themselves locked away.

The figure walked away, seeming more angry and silently calm themselves. “They're ALL near. Possibly in one place, if I wait.”

-----------

Something's poking your cheek, then your chin, so you hid your face under the blanket and fall back asleep.

Now you felt strands of your hair being tucked and you whine tiredly, hiding under pillow. There's muffled laughing and you peek out, only to turn away from the one laughing.

“(____), finally after 15 minutes, you wake up.” Varian laughs.

“I'm not awake.” You say, trying to go back to sleep.

“Uh-huh. Whatever you say, I'm bringing breakfast up here and I have something amazing to show you.” He goes to the door and happily slips out, accidentally slamming the door.

You sit up, smiling softly at Varian's enthusiastic behavior. He comes back in with a big breakfast and you raise a brow, “That's a lot.” You chuckle.

“Well, you deserve the best.” He places it on a small table and turns to face away from you, picking something up. “Hey, (____).”

You hum an answer and you look at Varian. “Don't you remember?” He asks and you were confused, “Remember what?”

He chuckles in disbelief, “Oh this is just bittersweet.” Varian turns to you, smirking wickedly and gripping a knife in his hand.

Your eyes widen and you get up, “Varian? Wh-what are you doing? This better be a joke.” He runs at you, swiping the weapon and you dodge it. “VARIAN!”

Varian growls and chases you, “YOU'RE NOT TAKING HER AWAY FROM ME!”

You scream and made it to the door, running out. Once you do, you see that all the black rocks destroyed everything around you.

“(____)!!!!!”

You hear Varian and see him stomping out very angrily as the rocks sprout around him, “THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!”

The rocks sprout up and encase you as it gets darker and darker until you see Varian's face through a small opening before it's completely dark.

You sit up, feeling your heart thumping rapidly on your chest and there's a worried purr beside you. Rudiger sat there with a sad expression.

“It's okay. Rudiger. I'm okay….” You pet his head then run your hands over face, trying to find your glasses.

The numb feeling where the mark is was slightly burning and you lift up your sleeve. The mark slightly glowed, but it was dimming back to normal.

The door opens and Varian comes in with a plate of breakfast, “I tried to fit everything on one plate because somehow the rest of them…..caught on fire a few days ago.” He chuckles sheepishly.

You slip on your glasses and watch Varian after Rudiger jumps out the window. “Varian?”

He hums a reply while trying pull out utensils from his pocket.

“You're not going to come at with a weapon, right?” You ask in hesitation.

Varian raises a brow and snickers, “Uh, no. Unless you count a butter knife.” He turns around, holding a butter knife and smiles, “Though it'll be very savage to use a butter knife. Besides, I never do that to anyone, especially you.”

You gulps and smile a bit, “Okay.”

Varian looks at you worried and places the utensil down, “Why did you ask such a thing, anyway?”

You shrug, “Just a nightmare is all. Sorry.”

Varian sits next to you then pulls you into a hug, “It was just a nightmare, it's not real and know I will never hurt you.”

You wrap your arms around him, “I know. It just scared me for a moment.”

He hums then grins, “Let's eat and we can spend the rest of the day with each other like always.”

You pull away and laughs lightly, nudging him, “You mean, I'm the test subject again.”

Varian laughs, “Okay, that and I want to show you something that does not require testing.”

Soon you're staring at what looks to be something highly dangerous? It had sharp metal hands? above where the person is supposed to be strapped in. “Varian. What is that?”

“It's a machine that should analyze any substance for chemical make-up, bitopic composition, and arch structural integrity.”

You eyes narrow in confusion, “Uh…... meaning?”

Varian laughs, “Oh, you're adorable.” He gently pushes you until you leaning against the metal table then your eyes widen as you're strapped down.

“Varian.” You say with a bit of worry and warning.

“What? Just relax and let the machine do its job. Oh and it has 87 tests so, hang in there.” He smiles nervously, chuckling. Varian pulls back two black levers.

You hear the machine startup and you hold back a yell as the table spins different ways. Your hair is sticking up once it stops and a ding is heard.

“One down! 86 more to go! Oh I almost forgot the Spectrometric Press.” Varian runs toward another machine and tries to wheel it to you, but it gets stuck. “Stupid...thing.”

You blink as metal hands grab onto your hair and suddenly you're being shocked by electricity. Unfortunately, it didn't hurt, but what did hurt was a sudden pulse of energy shoot out of you.

Varian jumps, turning around to see his machine had blown up on one side. “Whoa! Uh….”

Luckily, he didn't see what happened.

You look to him and grin sheepishly, “I think something blew.” You were upside down and you were starting to get light headed. “Can you let me out?”

Varian puts a hand to his mouth and his shoulders move like he's laughing.

“Varian!” You pout.

He bursts out laughing and walks over, only to trip on a loose board and stumbles toward you. “Ah!”

You scream once when his hand unlatches the strap and you fall right on top of him. “Who's laughing now?” You say, but you two groan in pain.

“No one’s laughing, (____).” Varian says

“Can we see the thing that does NOT require testing?” You sit up and fix your glasses.

Varian nods, “Yeah. That's probably safer.” He smile at you.

You notice his goggles had fallen off, so you pick it up and softly slip it back on his head. “There.” You boop his nose and get up.

Varian blinks, touching his nose and fairly lightly, his cheeks dust a pink color. “Thanks.” Hs stands up and claps his hands, “OKAY! Off to the caverns!”

You two walk out of the lab, not noticing the press printing half the results it could get before the machine blew. The parchment paper sat there until it's ripped from the press.

“Oh, Cordelia.” Quirin whispers sadly and sighs, “What am I supposed to do?” He folds up the paper and keeps it.
