Chapter 5
Constantine, following the directions on the map Aladdin had given to them, navigated Haashid out of Cairo and to where Professor Croft was being held at. Haashid flew his magic carpet high and fast over the vast Egyptian desert. Constantine could feel the hot desert air beat against his entire body as they flew through the cloudless blue Egyptian sky.
"We should be close!" yelled Constantine over the sound of the rushing wind.
On the map which Constantine gripped tightly in his hands, the three glowing coloured dots depicting himself, Cara and Haashid was nearing the glowing orange dot which indicated the professor.
"I don't see anything!" remarked Cara.
"Neither do I, Constantine! Are you sure we are near!?"
Constantine looked down at the map once more. The three glowing coloured dots depicting himself, Cara and Haashid was on top of the professor's glowing coloured dot.
"I'm sure we are!" replied Constantine. "The map clearly indicates so!" Unless the map is wrong. Or maybe...an invisibility field? "Haashid, take us down!"
"Why?!" asked Haashid.
"I have a feeling that something is not quite right! Just take us down! And try to land us on higher ground if possible!"
Haashid, listening to Constantine, took his magic carpet down for a landing. The hefty middle-aged man slowed down his magic carpet before landing it on a small rock formation which overlooked the location of where Professor Croft was supposed to be held at. As soon as the magic carpet touched the ground, Constantine got off it. He took a moment to catch his breath and compose himself before rummaging through his leather messenger bag.
"What are you looking for?" asked Cara curiously as she watched Constantine rummage through his bag.
"My glasses," replied Constantine just as he took out his black round-framed glasses from his bag.
"Since when did you start wearing glasses?" Cara asked.
"A few years ago."
"But why do you need your glasses now?" asked Cara, confused.
"Because I'm going to use it see whether or not there's an invisibility field placed around the area."
"And how is your glasses going to help you see whether there's an invisibility field or not?" asked Cara.
"The lenses are enchanted to be able to see through illusions and invisibility fields. In addition to helping me see better at night," replied Constantine before putting on his glasses.
"What do you see, Constantine?" asked Haashid
"Just as I thought, an invisibility field," replied Constantine, seeing through the invisibility field that protected a large dig site which had hundreds of people working.
The many crumbling buildings and statues of the city of Abydos were kept hidden behind the invisibility field. Buildings and statues of various shapes and sizes. Buildings that were once grand and majestic. A symbol of Ancient Egypt's engineering might as well as wealth. That must be Abydos. I can only imagine what it would have looked like at its height. Before it was buried beneath the sands.
"Isn't it impossible to place an invisibility field over such a large area to begin with?" said Cara in disbelief. "I mean, casting an invisibility field without any sort of visible distortions on a human sized target already causes a considerable amount of Strain on the user's wand. Shouldn't a feat of this scale destroy the wand outright?"
"It should be impossible to do such a feat, yes. The amount of magical energy needed to be harnessed would have definitely caused a large enough Strain not only to destroy the wand the caster is using, but it could also cause a considerable amount of feedback Strain on the user's body as well. It is obvious that we're not dealing with your average wizards or witches here," replied Constantine as he took off his glasses.
"Let me take a look at the site, Constantine," said Haashid.
"Here you go," said Constantine, handing his glasses over to Haashid.
Haashid took Constantine's glasses and proceeded to put it on. "T-That's a large dig site," remarked Haashid. "One of the largest I've seen. No wonder they needed to place an invisibility field over it."
"Let me take a look," said Cara.
Haashid took off the glasses and gave it to Cara who promptly put it on.
"That's one big dig site alright," commented Cara. "There must be over a hundred people working down there. How are we going to look for my father with so many people around? We'll surely get noticed."
"I think the question we should address first is how are we even going to get into the dig site," said Haashid. "We can't exactly just walk in."
"I have something that could get us around that actually," said Constantine as he rummaged through his bag.
"What is it?" asked Cara.
"An invisibility cloak," answered Constantine as he took out the large silver cloak that Professor Mallard had given to him from his bag.
"I don't think we can all fit under it. Just look at me," said Haashid, pointing out his large hefty size.
"That's why I'm the only one that's going to go down there."
"No you're not," said Cara. "I'm coming with you."
"I don't think that's such a good idea," replied Constantine, shaking his head.
"My father is down there. Hurt. I'm following you to find him," demanded Cara.
"If we're both are under the invisibility cloak, we'll move much slower and it will take a much longer time to find your father," pointed out Constantine. "And time is of the essence." Constantine gently put his right hand on Cara's shoulder. "I know you're scared, but if you really want to help your father, you'll let me go down there alone to find him."
"He's right, Cara," agreed Haashid. "Following him would only slow him down in finding your father."
"So what are we suppose to do then? Just wait?"
"Not exactly," replied Constantine. "You two would need to play a very important part."
"Which is?" asked Cara.
"I need you both to extract me and your father if I can't blink out and things go south down there." Which I sincerely hope won't happen.
"And how would we know if you're in trouble?" asked Cara, arms folded.
"I'll send up a flare," replied Constantine. "That'll be the signal."
"And that's when we come swooping into the rescue, right?" remarked Haashid. "Wands blazing."
Constantine nodded.
"Just pray, however, that it doesn't come to that. I hope I can get the professor out without any sort of confrontation." Because I'm definitely not going to be able to take on Hitler's men in a straight on fight. I just don't have the duelling skills to do so.
"Don't worry, Constantine. If things do go south, we have your back," remarked Haashid. "You can count on us."
"Find my dad, and stay safe down there," said Cara with a look of concern etched on her face.
"Don't you worry. I will," promised Constantine before putting on his invisibility cloak and vanishing from sight.

Constantine stood by the threshold of the invisibility field, sweating almost uncontrollably under the invisibility cloak. He could feel his shirt that was drenched in sweat stick to his body. It was an uncomfortable sensation, to say the least. Using the sleeves of his invisibility cloak, Constantine wiped away the sweat from his brow that was getting into his eyes. Let's hope that they didn't set an intruder detection field, or this I'll be over pretty quickly, thought Constantine as he began to inch closer to the field. Here goes nothing. Constantine passed through the field and waited for Hitler's men to blink in, but no one came. Constantine sighed, relieved that no one had come. Time to look for the professor.
Although he was all but invisible to the naked eye, Constantine still threaded carefully through the dig site, as it was all too easy to leave footprints behind in the sand. Thankfully, the invisibility cloak was so large and long that it touched the ground, sweeping away most of the footprints that Constantine had left behind, leaving no trace that he was even there. As he walked through the dig site towards the tents, he saw many men, most likely locals from Cairo, working to unearth the treasures buried beneath the sand. He wondered whether or not they knew who they were working for. Whether they knew they were helping a dangerous criminal acquire more power to further his goals. But it probably didn't matter to them as long as they were paid.
Following the directions that were given to him by the map, Constantine found himself facing a large tent which was surrounded by a smaller tent. He looked down at the map while still under his invisibility cloak and saw that his glowing green dot was directly over the professor's own glowing dot. This should be it. This is where the professor is. Constantine looked at the tent and was surprised that there was no one standing guard at the entrance to where the professor was being held. Either Hitler's men were so certain to no one would be able to find them to rescue the professor, or the professor was too badly injured to escape.
As he approached the tent, two figures exited the tent, one male and one female. One of them was a familiar figure which Constantine recognised. Someone he did not expect to see. Miranda? What's she doing here? thought Constantine, seeing the figure of a young and beautiful woman with shoulder length dark brown hair who had exited a large tent. Following her out of the tent was a tall man middle-aged with hard, blunt feature who had his blonde hair neatly slicked backwards. From where he stood, Constantine could see that the two were talking about something. I need to get closer. Constantine approached the two cautiously, getting close enough to hear the exchange between the two taking place.
"I think we should let the professor go," said Miranda. "He's given us everything he knows already."
The tall man shook his head before speaking with an icy tone, heavily accented with German tonality. "Not yet. Not until we have the Tome in our hands. Until then we keep him here. We still might need him."
"But what if people are looking for him?"
The tall man chuckled. "Let them look. They'll never find him. And one more thing, Miranda."
"What is it, Hans?"
Hans leant in closer to Miranda. "Never. Ever. Interrupt me when I'm in the middle of an interrogation."
The tall man then walked off, leaving Miranda standing alone outside of the tent. She stood there silently for a brief moment as if she was in deep thought before walking off in the same direction as the tall man.
As soon as Miranda had left, Constantine entered the tent. Upon stepping inside, his nostrils were assaulted by the stench of stale sweat and the smell of charred flesh which mingled in the air. What he saw as soon as he entered saddened him and brought pain to his heart.
