The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild: Final Boss Right and Wrong.
So today we'll be talking about what the entire final boss battle of the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild does right and what it does wrong. So music, cut scenes, character development, storytelling, gameplay, and everything that makes a boss battle a boss battle. Also of y course MAJOR SPOILER WARNING. If you haven't finished Breath of the Wild get out now! Don't say I didn't warn you. Also this is my OPINION if you disagree feel free to leave comments on what you considered right and wrongs of the boss battle.
Let's start with the first phase. Now to me Calamity Ganon comes off as really menacing. He just woke up from being sealed for 100 years and is clearly very angry about it. He's also fused with multiple guardians and is all around a monster to behold. His introduction is done very well in my opinion and he lives up to the idea I had. A menacing beast that had taken over all of Hyrule in one swift move.
So after he's introduced the Divine Beasts all attack and the cut scenes are all great, I especially love the music. They blast Ganon, he gets up and ready to beat up Link, Link draws his weapon and the battle begins. The music is by far the best part of this battle. Setting a tone and just generally being well composed.
Calamity Ganon is piss easy, I'm sure if the Divine Beasts didn't take half his health he'd pose more of a challenge. But honestly there were so many better ways to handle it that didn't involve making the final boss one of the easiest parts of the game. Like instead have all the Blights re-appear. And when they do if you freed the Divine Beast they normally appear in the Divine Beast attacks their respective Blight and takes a quarter to half health. It creates a boss rush that makes you use skills you've previously established along with new strategies you learned after you became more experienced. It also creates more of a challenge and still rewards you for freeing the Divine Beasts.
Now after you beat Calamity Ganon you move on to Dark Beast as I'll be calling it. Dark Beast is great! I love the pure epicness behind the entire battle! You're shooting arrows at a gigantic pig monster while on horseback and finish the fight by leaping into the air and slowing down time, firing one final arrow into its secret eye! That's amazing!
The boss looks awesome as well, capturing the pig feeling they go for while also being something different and threatening. The fact that you can ride your horse is pure genius and the freedom you have of being able to run around a gigantic open area captures the freedom this game offers.
The music is the best in the game and I don't say that lightly. It has a lot of great tracks but this one is by far the best of them all.
But he's also piss easy. The greatest challenge being remembering to equip the Bow of Light. He only attacks you from the front and while I'm sure it'd be harder on foot almost everyone has a horse. Even then he takes way too much damage per arrow and puts up no fight. From a challenge perspective this is worse than Calamity. I get he's big and bulky but still, couldn't he fire lasers from all over his body, teleport, take less damage per arrow, send out elemental attacks based on the blights, SOMETHING MORE?! Now while I haven't played Master Mode and don't plan to that isn't what we're judging. It could be 100 times harder but I wouldn't count it because that's a different mode.
Then the cut scenes again are beautiful and you can get some great character development with Zelda and even a potential resolution to Link and Zelda's relationship if you read between the lines. Seeing all the spirits move on was amazing and the symbolism in the Silent Princess becomes that much more apparent when you see it's the final scene in the game, right after Zelda let go of needing her powers and accepted she didn't need them to be who she was. Magnificent!
The final boss fight succeeds at just about everything except gameplay. It's like the Splatoon 2 final boss in a lot of ways. Blindingly epic at first but when you break it down it's really piss easy. But hey, the game's still great and I liked the boss so that's a plus.
Sorry for the shorter chapter but I recently re-battled Ganon and wanted to talk about this. That's all, have a nice day!
