20 - We're not in a boat!
My eyes followed Mavis's finger to the thing she was pointing at on Zeref's file and I gasped. Natsu. That was the name of Zeref's brother. Could Natsu be Zeref's younger brother? I didn't know anyone else named Natsu and it was a really uncommon name. It also might not be a coincidence that Zeref keeps tormenting us – maybe he wants to see Natsu. Not that that was a reasonable excuse for all that he had done.
A knock suddenly sounded on the door, signalling for us to leave. Levy quickly stuffed the folder back into the draw and we ran to the exit. We opened the door, hurried out and closed the door. Gajeel, who was wating outisde, took Levy's hand and we scurried as one down the hall. We met with our other friends and walked outside, trying not to look suspicious. As we passed other people, my heart beat loudly in my ears but we made it safely out of the school.
"So, what did you guys find out?" Lucy asked once we were at a park a few blocks away.
I exchanged looks with Mavis and Levy. Even though we didn't want to say it, we had to.
"Zeref used to live in an orphanage... and he has a brother," Mavis started. "And the file said that he's called Natsu."
The atmosphere dropped. Everything was quiet. I could just imagine the gears turning in their heads as they thought of what this meant.
"Woah, that's so cool!" Natsu exclaimed happily. "He has the same name as me. What a coincidence!"
We just looked at him blankly.
"Natsu," Levy said slowly. "We think that you might be Zeref's long lost brother."
Natsu's eyes widened. "Me? I don't have any siblings. Why would I be his brother?"
"Natsu, you're adopted, right?"
"Yeah... but that doesn't mean anything, right? Right?"
"I think we need to talk to Zeref," Lucy said.
It was clear to Natsu now what we were all thinking. He was most likely Zeref's brother and the reason why the black-haired boy pesters us. It was a lot to take in and Natsu's eyes were wide and blank, his mind most likely whirring inside with questions. We all stayed quiet, no one uttering a word. No one wanted to say something bad or something that might trigger Natsu. At last, he broke the silence.
"I need to talk to him," Natsu said.
I couldn't read his face or tone of voice at all so I couldn't tell what he was thinking but I'm guessing it wasn't good. With a frown on his mouth, he marched to the school. We stared at him before we realised what he was doing. When we did, we rushed after him, which took some effort as his speed walking got faster by the second. Just as we were about to stop him, he started running and so we started running. Knowing Natsu, he would probably do something reckless and we didn't want that happening.
"Natsu!" Lucy cried. "What are you doing? Do you have a plan in mind?"
"Yes. The plan is called find Zeref and beat him up," Natsu replied from in front of us.
"That doesn't sound like a good plan," Juvia said.
Our chase continued all the way to Alvarez university. Natsu was surprisingly a fast runner – I have no idea how none of us caught up to him.
"How are you going to even find him? You don't know where he is," Gray told Natsu.
"I'll find him!' Natsu yelled.
As he sprinted through the gates of Alvarez University, he crashed into something and fell down. Our gaze travelled as one to meet Zeref towering above Natsu. What a coincidence that we happened to bump into him.
Flustered, Natsu jumped up to face Zeref. Oh no. What was he going to say now?
"You! Am I your brother?" Natsu shouted, pointing angrily at Zeref.
I face palmed. How could he just ask a question like that? Though, it did have an interesting effect. Zeref, a guy who always seems to be calm and collected, showed surprise for a flicker of a second.
"Brother?" Zeref asked with no emotion on his face again. "Where did you hear that?"
"In your school files! It said that you lived in an ophanage but you had a younger brother named Natsu. I lived in an orphanage too. So are we brothers?" Natsu replied.
Zeref paused for a while. My friends and I, all a few feet away from the two boys, stood quietly as we observed the situation. We didn't want to move or make them notice us and it would disrupt the conversation. For now, we wanted to see where everything went and what would happen next.
"You went through the schol files? You know that you could get arrested for that?" Zeref asked.
"Who cares? Just answer my question!" Natsu yelled.
Zeref stared at him, his eyes focused intently on the other boy. It was like watching a scene from a drama – was Zeref going to say yes?
"I'm afraid I'm late for a class. I have to go now. Good bye," Zeref said emotionlessly.
He turned and started to walk away. That was definitely unexpected. The suspense was building so high and then it jus dropped so suddenly. However, the scene that unfolded next was defintely not unexpected.
Natsu, being the reckless person that he is who can't take no for an answer, charged after Zeref and spun him around forcefully.
"I'm not done talking to you! Why won't you answer me? It's because it's true then, isn't it? If you knew all this time, why didn't you tell me earlier?" Natsu shouted.
My eyebrows furrowed as I listened intently. Natsu's voice strained with emotion and I suddenly understood what he was feeling. The fact that he just found out that he has a brother – a family – but they knew for years and never told him. Being in the dark about something like this would hurt.
Zeref didn't say anything.
"Answer me! Why aren't you talking, huh?" Natsu cried.
And of course, I predicted the next move. When Zeref remained silent with a blank yet almost sorrowful look in his eyes, Natsu punched him in the face. Zeref was just as shocked as the rest of my friends and the surrounding people. While some bystanders ran away, most stayed to watch the drama happen. My friends and I inched closer, still staying out of the way but in reach in case something worse occurred.
"Say something!" Natsu punched Zeref again.
The black haired boy stumbled but didn't fight back. Natsu threw a kick and another punch. He kept going at it again and again with Zeref only blocking and not fighting back.
"That's enough. Natsu, stop!" Mavis cried out.
I looked at Mavis, almost forgetting she was here. The girl was on the verge of tears with her hands tightly clasped together in front of her chest. I suddenly remembered how she was in love with Zeref and seeing her now, I could tell that her feelings were strong. As I glanced at Zeref, it seemed like he was purposely taking the beating, perhaps feeling guilty or bad for something.
When Natsu didn't stop fighting Zeref, Mavis ran out to stop them, trying to pull Natsu away from Zeref.
"Stop, Natsu! Please!" Mavis pleaded. "You've done enough – Zeref's bleeding."
"He's a criminal," Natsu raged, throwing his fist wildly at the injured boy.
Poor Zeref was coughing blood and bruised all over. Even though he was a bad person, he didn't deserve this and I was worried for what could happen to Natsu after this. We finally realised that this had gone on for too long and it needed to be stopped. I shouted at the useless bystanders to call for help while my friends and I approached the fight, analysing how to stop it.
As Mavis tried to get in front of Natsu to stop him from punching Zeref, Zeref's eyes widened and he pulled Mavis out of the way. I knew it – he does care about her.
Natsu hesitated for a split second and I took that chance to wrap my arms around Natsu, trying to keep him still. Jellal came to help as well but unfortunately, my grip loosened when I turned to look at my fiance and Natsu escaped my hold. He continued punching Zeref and yelling at him, determined to get an answer or satisfaction – I didn't know. Mavis shouted at Natsu to stop, my friends shouted at him to stop, I shouted at him to stop. Altogether, we tried again to stop the fight – we weren't afraid to shove and push Zeref roughly away from Natsu.
Suddenly, policemen charged onto the scene and pulled everyone apart, handcuffing all of us except for Zeref.
"Hey!" Juvia protested. "Why are you putting handcuffs on us? We didn't do anything."
"They did. They all beat up my friend here." A boy appeared. It was Invel, one of Zeref's new lackeys that we've seen hanging around him a lot.
Yes, I was hoping someone would call for help to stop the situation – preferably a teacher, but having the police here wasn't what I was expecting. They dragged us all to the police cars and on the way out, my eyes met with my mother's. She seemed guilty and worried to see me like this but I quickly averted my gaze. If she didn't want to stop Zeref and help my school then I was partially blaming her for this. Anger flared in my chest as I thought about it. I knew I shouldn't just blame her but it woke my dying hatred of her leaving me when I was younger.
"Everything will be fine, right?" Levy whispered once we were all in the cars.
"Of course not. Natsu screwed everything up," Gajeel scoffed.
"Look, I know we're all not happy to be handcuffed and heading to a police station right now but let's not get mad at Natsu. Surely, you can understand what he's feeling right now," Lucy said, glancing at her boyfriend.
Natsu kept his gaze down at his hands in his lap, keeping his expression cold and not saying a word.
"Yeah, now I can see how those two are related," Gajeel remarked.
"Hey!" several people protested.
Mavis was defending Zeref, Lucy defended Natsu and others also didn't like what Gajeel said. I didn't like it either but I didn't want to say anything and cause trouble. A police officer in the car told us to be quiet so we did and the rest of the ride was covered in an uncomfortable silence.
When we got to the police station, we all got out of the cars and went into the building, staring at Zeref and his close associates who were escorted here in another police car. It was a long, boring process of individual interviews. The witnesses, Invel and some of Zeref's other followers were also questioned, which was unfair because we all know what they were going to say.
In the end, my friends and I were locked up in the temporary cell while the police sorted out things. Apparently, Zeref and the witnesses said that we all beat up Zeref. Things were not looking good for us. We might actually go to jail or we could get one of our other friends like Mirajane to bail us out – no, I don't want to drag anyone else into this.
"Calm down, strawberry," Jellal whispered to me.
He squeezed my hand reassuringly and I gave him a small nod of appreciation. His presence helped me relax and slow my breathing, which I didn't even know had started to accelerate. I felt better now but still kept my hand in Jellal's, watching as our friends talked and walked around in the small space.
"What are we going to do?" Juvia panicked. "I've never been to jail before."
"I'm pretty sure none of us have been to jail before," Lucy said.
"Yeah, let's just try to all stay calm. We're all in the same boat," Levy added.
"We're not in a boat!" Juvia cried. "We're in a jail cell!"
"Figure of speech," Gajeel muttered as he wrapped his arm around his fiance.
I sighed, leaning against Jellal. Everyone was stressed and worried and I had no idea what we were going to do. At this point, we needed a miracle to save us.
Many minutes passed by and we were all sitting on the floor, leaning on one another. We were tired and hungry and we didn't know when we would be let out. Finally, a police officer approached our cell.
"You're all free to go," he said, opening the door for us.
We all jumped to our feet, excited to leave.
"Wait, what? What happened? Did Zeref admit that we weren't all guilty?" Gray asked.
"Someone bailed you all out and has evidence on Zeref sabotaging Fairy Tail University," the policeman stated, ushering us out of the building.
"Really? Who?" I asked curiously.
The man didn't say anthing as he kept motioning for us to get out. While we headed for the exit, I glimpsed a red haired lady walking into a room with a police officer. I knew at once that it was my mum. She must have been the one who saved us but that also means that she handed evidence on the bad things Zeref did. Why would she do that when she didn't seem so keen on doing it before? Of course, like I've been proven before, people really can change.
"Wow, I can't believe someone would actually bail us out. I wonder who it was," Gajeel exclaimed once we were outside.
Jellal looked at me questioningly and I could tell he knew who it was. I took a deep breath in.
"It was my mum," I announced.
"Your mum?" Lucy asked surprised. "I thought you... you know, were an orphan? Wait did you find your mum?"
"Yeah. I probably should have told you guys earlier but I was still trying to accept her as my mum. She's actually a teacher at Alvarez Univeristy and that's how I found her."
"Alvarez University? And she gave the police evidence of Zeref trying to shut down Fairy Tail Uni?" Gajeel asked.
I smiled to myself. "I guess she cares about me more than I thought."
"So, we're not going to jail and Zeref is being tested guilty of his crimes. What do we do now?" Levy asked.
We all looked at each other. There was no more reason for us to be at the police station so we were free to do what we wanted now.
"It'll take a while for the police to sort everything out and it will definitely be on the news and Fairy Tail Uni will tell us what will happen with them. I guess we could probably just celebrate now," Lucy shrugged.
"Let's go to the club!" Natsu exclaimed, his usual smile on his face once again.
Seeing him happy automatically made me smile. It was weird seeing him all sad and serious so I'm glad that he's back to being his bright, cheerful self.
Everyone agreed with Natsu on his idea and we set off to get ready to party. Things were finally looking up for us and we deserved a nice break from everything. As we walked together and chatted happily about meaningless things, Jellal wrapped his arms around my shoulders and I wrapped mine around his waist.
I thought to myself quietly about how I would need to see my mum after this. She helped us today and I can see that she's trying her best with me so maybe I can try as well. After all, she's the only family I have and it would be nice to have a mum.
Feeling Jellal playing with my t-shirt sleeve, I was suddenly reminded about our wedding. Maybe I could invite my mum. Plus I had to organise the rest of the guest list, get a location, dress and many other things organised. Wow, that was going to be a lot of work. But for now, I decided to forget about all my worries and stress. Instead, I savoured this moment with my fiance and my friends as we went to celebrate together.
